Our third development update of the summer brings additional statistics to the members’ area and adds the first set of Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points System (BPS) tables.

For those who aren’t aware, the BPS is used to decide the distribution of FPL bonus points based on a series of statistics collected by Opta.

Our work in this area is not yet fully complete, but with the FPL set for launch next week, we wanted to get this first stage live and available to you.

Here’s what’s included in this update.

Baseline Bonus Point System Tables
We’ve added two tables to present the statistics that generate the BPS. There are tables showing both the positive and negative factors. In both tables we’ve included the Baseline BPS statistic and a Minutes per Baseline BPS.

The Baseline BPS strips out the core actions – goals, assists, clean sheets and also winning goal.

By removing these, we can get a clearer view on those players who benefit most from the “baseline” statistics in the BPS.

In this way, we can compare defenders in a single team and get a strong sense of who is more likely to return bonus points when a clean sheet is achieved.

Obviously, when assessing targets, goals and assists should be considered. But these are factors that we are all well aware of when assessing our tables and deciding on selections.

Remember, if you click on a club icon in the player tables, this will filter a table to this club alone.

Custom Table Statistics
In addition to the BPS tables, we’ve also made an array of new statistics available for use in custom tables – including statistics not listed in our current tables.

These also include statistics missed from Update Two:

Big Chances Missed Ball – A big chance missed when the player makes no contact with the ball
Big Chances Missed Shots – A big chance missed when the player connects with the ball
Big Chances Scored – big chances converted by that player/team.

The following stats have been added, supplying the calculated BPS points for their relevant action:

BPS CBI
BPS Clean Sheets
BPS Goals
BPS Recoveries
BPS Time Played
BPS Yellow Cards
BPS Baseline – the BPS tally for a player with goals, assists, clean sheets and winning goal BPS removed.
Winning Goal

During this work we also made several tweaks to some core statistics. These included Clearances which in turn had a knock on to the CBI stat – Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions.

This was a fairly minor change, which nonetheless reduced the number of clearances for some players.

Effectively, Opta stopped using a “Failed Clearance” event and replaced this with “Blocked Cross”. This new event was removed from our existing Clearances statistic to give us an updated “Successful Clearance”. This is now shown on our Defending tables and used in all CBI calculations.

What’s next?

We will first react to your feedback and look to build this in the next update. However, we plan to work with the BPS data further and add areas to the player profiles, player comparisons, team profiles and match dashboards.

We may also add a BPS area to the main Members’ Dashboard. We will then introduce all remaining statistics for use in custom tables.

We have started research on touch heatmaps. Having already refined all our touches data, we know that this now involves purely the visualisation, so we’re hopeful that once we have decided on the solution, we will make some progress in the next update.

I also want to start work on a new form guide tool for both teams and players. It’s likely we will begin preliminary work for this next week.

We are also starting our research of Expected Goals – a very popular metric in football. I’ll let this guy explain the basis of this statistic.

With our Opta event feed, we have all we need to plot expected goals. We just need to decide on an approach and methodology. This will likely be a feature we work on over a number of updates in the coming months.

Hopefully, you’ve seen enough so far to be assured that we will go on improving the features available and the site overall.

Once the season is underway, we will put more emphasis on the main site as Mat becomes more familiar with the code and set-up in that area.

You can see our current task list and track our progress through the next update via this roadmap.

You can also send your feedback and requests to me at mark@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

Our previous updates are detailed here and here.

Also Roque Mesa to Swansea is a great signing, finally a Leon Britton replacement.

Hope they're lining up a Siggy replacement (of course Rooney could put the kybosh on that)

think i'd prefer Siggy at Swansea, we know what he does there and very high participation in goals, might not be the case at Everton, although may have more overall chances by being in a better team

Yep, not sure if they'll be adopting a pre-existing model or if there's a home brew in the works. Looking forward to seeing it (and then having people moan when xG and actual goals don't perfectly align...)

The beauty of xG is finding out why they don't align and explaining if it'll continue next time.

Yep, not many people will understand how xG is actually formed and what it actually means, a scout article on it when it is produced with examples would be amazing. Also xA would be nice to show chances created quality but i'm getting ahead of myself here.

There was talk of Josh King, but i doubt he'll want to be understudy to Kane. The lack of news also means they're not going to lose key players - with the probable exception of Walker but Trippier's ready.

I think Poch is confident in his first team and just wants backups for squad depth. Personally i think they're making a mistake - we often see strong teams fail to strengthen and pay the price. I think this will also happen to Chelsea this year.

i think they'll need more players just to cope with EPL/CL/FA CUP/League cup - i know they had all those last season but didn't have too may injuries, couple of players in the treatment room and their squad looks pretty thin - at least if they don't bring in any players there'll be rotation worries

      GK: Lloris, Vorm, Lopez
CB: Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Dier, Wimmer, Carter-Vickers
      LB: Rose, Davies
      RB: Walker, Trippier
      DM: Wanayama, Winks
      CM: Dembele, Onomah
      AM: Alli, Eriksen, Sissoko
      W: Son, Lamela, N'Koudou,
      FW: Kane, Janssen

They could do with offloading Sissoko and Janssen and buying a forward, a winger and a central midfielder IMO. Poch is going to trust the youngsters as well to some extent.

Janssen is good. Give him a chance. Offload Sissoko and N'koudou. Some smaller clubs are willing to take them if Spurs pay part of the salary and transfer is low cost. Buy another DM/CM.

      Got bottomed:

If you go with Kane, Jesus/Lacazette and Lukaku, either your defence or your midfield will suffer. Having those three players will probably take up around 35% of your budget, meaning you'll end up with having to make significant cutbacks in spending in the rest of your team.

      For example:

      4.5 / 4
      5.5 / 5 / 4.5 / 4.5 / 4
      8 / 8 / 8 / 6 / 4.5
      13 / 10 / 11.5

      or

      4.5 / 4
      5.5 / 5 / 5 / 4.5 / 4
      8 / 8 / 6.5 / 6 / 4.5
      13 / 10 / 11.5

It's going to be very tough to choose our teams this season, but I'm hoping that it will lead to more variance since there are going to be plenty of players that could turn into must-haves that obviously nobody can afford to get all of them (Kane, Jesus, Aguero, Lukaku, Lacazette, Chelsea's new striker, Sanchez, KdB, Eriksen, Alli, Coutinho, Mane).

In goal you're relying on a cheap goalie and have no one to rotate him with, which I personally don't like doing.

In defence you can afford one premium player at most - this isn't such a big issue as long as we don't have heavy hitting wingbacks hitting the ground running at the start of the season.

In midfield you have some room to maneuver, but players like Sanchez, Eriksen, Alli, Mane, Coutinho, KdB are surely off-limits. Maybe at a stretch you could afford Salah (though I think he will come in at a higher price than 8), Pogba, Sane and Redmond.

I think I'll surely be getting Kane and Lukaku, but in that 3rd striker position I may go for someone cheaper like Benteke/Defoe so I can have more options in midfield and defence.

Also, I just noticed that I made a mistake - the first team is 101M. So lets just say that your 5.5 defender is now a 4.5! 🙂

Does FPL Towers have a limit for number of players 12 mil or above? Already Sanchez, Aguero, Kane are looking like 12 mil for sure, with maybe Lukaku joining them... Is it possible that they'll just keep adding players to that price section or eventually re evaluate to balance the game? Will be interesting to see how they price Lukaku for sure given the United premium.

I'll be getting two of them and probably playing 4-4-2. Offers the best balance imo. Which two to get is the difficult part.

I had a look into this earlier, came up with:

          4.5 / 4.5
          6.0 / 5.0 / 4.5 / 4.5 / 4.0
          8.5 / 6.5 / 6.0 / 5.5 / 4.5
          13 / 11.5 / 11

Think that's with 0.5 ITB too. Hopefully can get Kane, Lukaku and Jesus, along with one reasonably strong MID. Would like a MUN defender, and probably a SOT one too. Thinking Redmond might be the 6.5 MID.

Obviously likely to be tweaked slightly once we see the prices, maybe go up to 9.0 to get a better premium MID.

I think that either of these would be. How about throwing in a cheeky 4-3-3:

          4.5 / 4
          6 / 5.5 / 5 / 4.5 / 4.5
          9.5 / 6.5 / 6 / 5 / 4.5
          13 / 10 / 11.5

3-5-2 or 4-4-2 might be the way to go with a 4.5 bench fodder striker, that extra 7m spread across the rest of the team would surely make up any points difference and give a lot more flexibility - if you go with 3 premium strikers form the start and 1 or even 2 of them fail to fire for 2 or 3 weeks it could be very low scores - i might go 3-4-3 but probably later when i've built up tv a little (that being said i might get excited by Virg's 'superior firepower' theory and stick the 3 up top anyway 😀 this is where game release next week is important, wish it was now so i could experiment over the weekend - interested to see what price Lacazette will be...

Yes, it's got to be 352/442 for me. The only difference is rather than the cheapest 4.5 3rd striker, i'll have a 6/5.5 playing striker who can step up when my 4th/5th def or 5th mid is unavailable.

yeh i agree, i think just for me i'd rather put that extra million or 2 into one of my 1st eleven, whenever i have an extra cheap striker they only score when i have them benched, in which case i'm happy to have a 4.5 def/mid come in for the 2-pointers when needed 🙂

i've always taken hits for tv (and chasing bandwagons), most years this works out and i come strong 2 half of season, but last couple of seasons i've noticed it has made less of a difference having high tv - i might have eg hazard, but if opponent finds a josh king type player most of that high tv potential reward is negated - will try for a more balanced approach this year hopefully, i think somewhere in the middle ground of building some tv with fewest number of hits is the key, just gotta pick the right bandwagons to follow, that's the tricky part

              8 years, 10 months ago

Sure, but I'm not sure why someone would do that. Lukaku, Pogba and two Man Utd defenders? You'd be spending too much in defence and you would have to get rid of one of those players before making any other transfer. I think it would just make things harder for anyone who tries to do that.

It's actually only if you transfer one of them out that you can't replace him from the same team. At least I recall it used to be like that. Not sure how it works now.

i bought him last season just in time for his injury....could be a good pick if fit, however expect a higher price than last season, and with all city players very much subject to rotation - seriously considering all city players for this reason, especially if they get Sanchez too - Jesus will be on my radar if price is right, possibly Sane if he looks like he is starting most games - they're just flooded with great midfield/attacking options this year

I think he'd be too expensive at Utd.

I like Lacazette if he comes in around £9-9.5m as you could go without Sanchez's inevitable £12+m price tag.

Tammy Abraham at Swansea could be an absolute snip, though. Clement helped develop him so reuniting with him could work wonders.

I'm a newbie to the Sky game and I'm just wondering if this draft team be far off the mark??
Is one striker a 'No, no!'

            Forster
            Cedric Dawson Bailly J. Ward
            Coutinho Eriksen Stanislas Pogba Redmond
            Lukaku
