Skipper Leighton Baines grabs the winner as Everton labour to victory in the first leg of their Europa League third round qualifying tie.

Here are the notes from a testing night for the Toffees.

Everton 1 MFK Ruzomberok 0

Leighton Baines’ deflected strike gave Everton something to defend ahead of what is likely to be a tricky trip to Slovakia for the second leg of their Europa League qualifying tie.

While Ronald Koeman’s men were still getting to grips with pre-season, their opponents had already played one league match and beaten Norwegians SK Brann over two legs to earn their visit to Goodison.

So there was always a feeling that this could be a step too soon for the Toffees.

And so it proved.

Everton were slightly off the pace for much of the encounter, and it took the second-half introduction of new signing Sandro to bring some directness and intent into their attacking play.

Koeman handed competitive debuts to defenders Michael Keane and Cuco Martina, though Jordan Pickford – with just 45 minutes in pre-season behind him – lost out to Maarten Stekelenburg in goal.

Davy Klaasen was part of the midfield three in a 4-3-2-1 formation.

The returning Wayne Rooney played through the middle up front, supported from the flanks by Kevin Mirallas, who was handed set-piece duties, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Keane was assured throughout, Martina considerably less so, while Klaasen showed the odd flash of creative ability but might need to demonstrate a lot more – and quickly – should Everton finally land long-time transfer target Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Ruzoberok were resolute in defence and quick to counter, forcing a couple of smart saves from Stekelenburg before Sandro, who replaced Calvert-Lewin, changed the tie’s dynamic.

Rooney was pushed out to the right to accommodate the Spaniard, whose willingness to run behind the back four finally stretched the Slovakians’ defence, allowing the hosts to apply some sustained pressure from which Baines’ winner eventually came.

Post-match, Koeman was quick to praise the impact of Sandro.

“Sandro brought pace to the team, he showed good movement and that gave Wayne more freedom to play from the right side.”

But the manager also told ITV Sport that he is keen to bring in another striker – not what the 20.9% of FPL manager who own Rooney wanted to hear.

Then again, Everton’s opening schedule is sufficiently harsh – involving four of last season’s top six by the middle of September – that early investment in any of their assets looks decidedly risky.

A clean sheet could boost the stock of the 13.0%-owned Keane, while the goal from the ever-reliable Baines (10.3%) was another reminder of his Fantasy pedigree.

But major backing of Everton players looks to be a strategy for the longer term, or at least a good deal later than this very early competitive start to the season.

Everton: Stekelenburg; Martina, Keane, Williams, Baines; Gueye, Schneiderlin, Klaassen (Davies 86); Mirallas (Lookman 82), Calvert-Lewin (Sandro 61); Rooney.
Subs not used: Pickford, Jagielka, Holgate, Barry.

Think I'm nearly there, just a few decisions to make.

    1) 6.0 midfielder - who are people leaning towards? I'm liking Phillips at the moment, at least initially.
    2) 4.5 defender - same question. I'm thinking Francis or Lascelles.
    3) Jesus, Morata, or Lacazette?

      (1) Phillips or Ince
      (2) Lascelles when fully fit
      (3) Jesus if you don't have any City. They will score more early in the season.

Pretty set on my team of:

    Foster (Elliott)
    Alonso / Trippier / Bertrand / (Francis / Hunemeier)
    Alli / Willian / Zaha / Tadic / (Carroll)
    Aguero / Lukaku / King

    Does swapping:
    Aguero / King / Alli / Betrand
    to
    Kane / Austin / KDB / Cedric
    Sound better?

Basically does Kane / KDB score more than Kun / Alli?

I think Kane + KDB will score more than Kun + Alli but the question is if it's worth the extra 1.5 mil

Well to get the extra 1.5 i'd be swapping King and Bertrand to Austin and Cedric... who I think will score reasonably closely.

I've got all 4 of those in my team already 🙂

The only question is currently between Cedric (no preseason) and Bertrand (0.5 extra).... I'm hoping that gets solved rather quickly.... if I do keep cedric I'm seriously considering upgrading Austin to Chicarito.... if only because I fear a bit for Austin's minutes.. he might be coming off around 60 each week.

    Some good options currently under 10% ownership;

    Özil - 5.4%
    Ramsey - 5.1%
    Townsend - 2.8%
    Benteke - 8%
    Vardy - 3.4%
    Aguero (!!) - 8.9%
    Mkhitaryan - 5.8%
    Tadic - 4.4%

Townsend is my "watch and wait" wildcard - I think he will have a good season (especially if Palace play 433), but not totally convinced yet.

I'm taking a punt on Mkhitaryan and hoping he'll play and deliver points (plus Mata is injured at the moment (I think?))

I'm starting with Mkhi over Pogba.... I think he will see far more game time this season than last.

And Tadic was one of my first picks... really well priced, excellent fixtures and penalties for an attacking midfielder playing behind the likes of Austin.... don't see a downside to starting the season with him.... easy switch to Snodgrass/Lanzini/Arnautovic/willian/phillips etc if things do go wrong

    Foster / Elliot

Cedric Alonso Daniels Trippier / Rangel

Promoted sides are not to be underestimated, particularly early on and with optimism abound. However, it appears that City are just going to splurge goals on a regular basis. They always start well and I always overlook them due to price/fixture/gametime factors etc. but that always leads to a missed oppurtunity. KDB and Jesus, whilst neither may be captaincy material atm, may both prove to be the spines our 15 are looking for

Foster & Bailly can be DDG & Dawson (attacking threat).

I was looking at something similar, but worried that Lacazette might need a bit of time to settling into the league (I haven't seen anybody mention that by the way....are people being overly optimistic or not including lacacette?) and all this Sanchez nonsense can't be good for the team.

I think he's good value at 10.5, Wenger wouldn't spend that money without having a slot for him right away. He's established himself by performing well for the last few seasons. Can see him taking pens. If Sanchez goes, he looks even better. (Assuming a Mahrez/Lemar type replacement).

Will have to downgrade someone for the 0.5.

And also will have to get a non starter 4.5FWD. Both my bench fodders right now are good for 2-5 points as they are nailed.

Also I'm not so convinced by Williams and Cheslea's fixtures.
There's a chance they will be starting the season with a cineplex new attack comepared to last season.

I haven't used what you may be using. I can only actually do 4-3-3 with no subs. I have added a couple of names in to get some thoughts on the players.

    Choose

    A) JRod + Tadic

    B) Austin + Phillips

    Cheers

Personally I would say B, Austin if he is the main man will gurantee goals & I saw enough of Phillips to know that he could chip in with 5-10 and a man of the match awards.

Looks unbalanced with Kane and KDB eating up funds.

I have the same midfield and strikers, and I'm comfortable with it.

Maybe a different 3rd striker? Perhaps whoever emerges for Southampton and then switch to Wee P In GW3

    de gea
    dawson cedric alonso

This is my team for the first 3 gameweeks before an early wildcard. What do you guys think?

I don't know why I love my team more when it has colors from each team. Not simply white and red kits of saints and spurs with tripling from them

    Foster
    Trippier Daniels Cedric
    KDB Sané Willian Ramsey
    Kane Lukaku Austin

    Elliot Mee RLC Hunemeier

Anyone fancy a double up on city in midfield?

Sanchez 'ill' two days before he is due back at Arsenal to resume training. Can he really force Arsene's hand and get a move away this summer?

Going without seems so wrong.. Burnt by him last season but less risky to have him this year at this price.
Kaku? I didn't pick Zlatan last year and know the downside of not having a player with high ownership.

    Foster
    Daniels, Trippier, Cedric
    KDB, Willian, Zaha, Coutinho
    Kane, Kaku, J Rod

    Subs: 4.0, Carroll, Lascelles, Rangel

I meant to say going without Aguero

I want Mane when fully fit and in form. Foster not good enough? I want 4.5 keeper.

      Too weak.

I'd be inclined to push Romeu to bench and squeeze a little more from defence to upgrade Mc Arthur / Redmond.

On Alonso and Jesus atm, over Kane and a 5m defender. Keep yo yoing given the captaincy factor and have got drafts with Kane, Jesus and Alonso in...

Just used the new players comparison tool, absolutely amazing!

Ramsey vs Ozil was very very interesting indeed!

Already have Kane and Trippier, am I really need Eriksen or Alli?

    Thx you.

Hard one - value for money they are both very good! But can you ignore having a triple up... its a judgement call.

Personally I would have tripper and either alli or eriksen before kane because of the value for money argument.

I know these questions are dull, but it's half the point of the place so...

Other strikers are Kaku & Hernandez

I'm leaning A but not owning Kane feels mental...

    A) Ozil & Jesus

    or

    B) Kane & Pogba (or any other 8m)
