Sky Sports Fantasy Football makes a return as a regular on these pages this season and, as of this evening, our pre-season analysis of the game gets underway.

We start by plunging headfirst into the most dramatic change introduced for 2017/18. The Overhaul is a new feature that looks set to literally transform the way we approach the game.

Similar to the Fantasy Premier League wildcard, this allows us to completely revamp our squads on two occasions over the season. However, there is a key difference with the Sky Sports Overhaul, as it is restricted for use during two distinct one-week windows.

This alters the way we approach our entire initial squad selection.

Here’s why…

“The first Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 4 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 5. The second Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 28 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 29. You will be able to make unlimited transfers during those periods until the first game day deadline”

With this in mind, it makes sense that our starting XI should focus solely on the opening three Gameweeks.

Following that, the international break affords us the opportunity to revisit our team, armed with three weeks of player form and data to help us rebuild.

Prior to the season kick-off on August 11, we will be basing our player list analysis articles around the “pre-overhaul” top targets, before revisiting each position to give a “post overhaul” view on line-ups.

Beyond our initial selection, the Overhaul also has far reaching implications on our transfer policy during the season.

Overhaul Tactics

The 40 transfers at our disposal can now be broken up and distributed over three distinct window periods.

  • The three-Gameweek period from August 11 until September 9, prior to the first Overhaul.
  • The 20-Gameweek period from September 9 until February 24, prior to the second Overhaul.
  • The 11-Gameweek period from February 24 onwards, after the second Overhaul.

Prior to the first Overhaul, it looks sensible to limit transfers to the bare minimum.

The best approach here is to pick an initial squad with good fixtures and with captains available for each match day – in our forthcoming articles, we will look to help guide you with this.

Of course, form, injuries and general misfortune could combine to play their part and derail that strategy.

However, our general rule with our intial selection should be to target assured starters or “nailed on” assets. This is always important but is made all the more paramount when you are essentially picking a team for the opening three Gameweeks.

Another viable tactic would be to use one or two transfers in a bid to get off to a flying start, covering all the major captains and looking for any “two for one” scenarios that the fixture schedule can offer us.

For example, by starting the season with an Arsenal asset for Friday night’s fixture at home to Leicester, then shipping them to acquire a Manchester City player for Saturday’s trip to Brighton, offers two possible captains and the extra player for a single transfer. It can also allow you to split your Arsenal/Man City budget in one team slot.

In terms of spending transfers, the Overhaul period two looks set to be the time frame where Sky Sports managers will use the bulk of their 40 trades.

This spell covers the vast majority of the season and the busy Christmas period while some of these weeks are essentially double Gameweeks.

In the past, experienced Sky Sports managers would use transfers on extra captain days and gain from “two for one” situations as best they could. However, the need to manage 40 transfers over the course of the campaign limited this tactic to rare occasions.

The Overhaul is set to shake this up, offering us the opportunity to be thriftier with our transfers.

Indeed, if we can select a solid XI and get our defence right after the first Overhaul, then extra captains and “two for ones” should take up the bulk of our future swaps, providing we can avoid being cursed by injuries and suspensions.

The second Overhaul arrives in the international break in Gameweek 28 – February 17.

Getting to that last Overhaul with around 10 transfers remaining – thus preparing for the fixture pile-up and inevitable rotation – should be a realistic goal.

Of course, with this being a new feature, it’s difficult to gauge the tactics and impact it can have on our seasons until we have first-hand experience.

If you have some alternative strategies on the use of Overhaul, then please let us know your views in the comments.

Will Matic's arrival affect Rashford's gametime/ performance in any way?

Don't think so, only Jose's system will affect this. If 3-5-2 he is only battling with Martial for striker spot. 4-2-3-1 he has more competition for winger spot.

A little. It means in a 4-2-3-1, Pogba may be in the hole over say Micky or Mata, meaning more competition out wide.

In all other formations, doesn't effect it much.

    Kane / Lukaku

    Elliot / Carroll / McBurnie / Hunemeier

For the first time ever - I'm thinking of having a strong defence as such. Do you see the team affected by that? Double Soton is a bit worrying but their fixtures are awesome - will accomodate a change if they were not firing early on. Would appreciate any comment 🙂

In my opinion we all, and myself, put too much effort in finding the right players from the start.

When I scrolled through my last year's history of gameweeks I clearly see that my GW1-team was completely different compared to my more 'fixed' team later on. I used also my wildcard too early without enough information.

IMO, the most important thing to avoid early wildcards is using more effort in finding the most flexible structure in your team than finding the right players. In that way you can easily change formations and/or without being super-afraid of choosing the wrong formation or wrong players.

IMO 4-4-2 is the most flexible formation. Further I think having two of Alonso/DeBruyne/Kane it's the best way to having flexibility in your team so you can downgrade one of them to upgrade elsewhere.

Sorry for long post. Are just Interesting in your thoughts 🙂 What do you think is the most flexible structure in that way?

True story! I've tried to maximise the number of naileders this year.

1-4-5-3 should be nailed thus far. Overspent in defence but 5 mids should rotate

I think the statistics suggest much the opposite. Successful teams frequently have used WC early, hit the must haves (Ramsey, Mahrez et al) scoffed up the price rises and prevailed.

And if you're still playing 442 at the end of the season i'll eat my hat.

Haha 🙂 Yes, could work out, but for me my early wildcard hasn't been so much better than my initially team when I looking back.

If you find the right players in an early wildcard we should all use our money in United, Arsenal, City and Newcastle. But afraid of using it early without enough information 🙁

In my opinion, formation itself doesn't affect flexibility as long as you don't A) Overspend in one area or B) Go for something like a 5-2-3 as if you do that it's much harder to get in form midfielders and you're more likely to panic and hit the wildcard. What's more important is investing a relatively equal amount in Defence (including GK) Midfield and Attack. This way it's easier to downgrade in one area and upgrade in another. I agree with your point about KDB and Kane too.

Good points here! Totally agree with this 🙂

        My structure now:

        4.5 (4.0) = 8.5
        7.0/6.0/5.5/5.0 (4.0) = 27.5
        10.0/9.5/8.0/5.5 (4.5) = 37.5
        11.5/10.5 (4.5) = 26.5

        What do you think?

        1. Witty Pun: Not good at this…
          • 8 Years

I like it. I think 4-4-2 is the best way to get 4 at the back - 4-3-3 just makes me uneasy as it's much harder to hit the in form mids. I also often use 4-4-2 as a stepping stone when I want to change formation: if you have two rotating cheapies always on the bench, you can play one whilst you downgrade a player in midfield for example and then upgrade another player e.g. in attack the week after.
          Currently I'm on
          5.5 4.0
          6.0 5.0 5.0 4.5 4.0
          10.0 9.0 7.0 6.0 5.5
          12.5 11.5 4.5

De Gea is only there because I don't like the defensive options in Utd right now, and I probably will wildcard early too 😆

Thanks for useful ideas! Loved the idea of having 2 rotating cheapies which allows you to downgrade and upgrade in 2 weeks instead of using hits.

Also like the idea of using 4-4-2 as a benchmark. Think your squad is well balanced to!

Also thinking about De Gea now..hard to say! Have never ever had a premium keeper.

I agree this is not talked about too much on here.
You would think once you sign a player he is in the squad for the season the way some talk on here!

The reality is the game is fluid and you have to be flexible.

At the moment it is 3-4-3
          I went for the cheap

          Keepers - 4.5 + 4.0
          Defence - 6 - 6.5 - 4.5 (4.5 - a non playing 4.0)
          Midfield - 10 - 5.5 - 9.0 - 7 (4.5)
          Strikers - 10.5 - 8.0 - 11.5

In theory this gives me plenty of scope to vary it.
          I contemplated going 4 -3-3 with a 5.5 defender instead of a 4.5 defender and another 4.5 midfielder.
But I think this gives more options.
Ideally I hope to save a transfer in the early gameweeks so if I take a -4 hit/-8 hit it will allow me to to have a mini-wildcard of 3/4 changes at once.

Just given the number of premium strikers available this year I think going. 3-4-3 with big 3 upfront gives you most flexibility to get in form captain options.

Hmm..I'm actually more willing to sacrifice in midfield than in defence due to the PPG premium-defenders did last year. My sacrifice is in midfield with having a 5.5 as 4th midfielder in 4-4-2 (currently JWP, could be Fraser).

But remember as you mentioned the early 'no CS' for defenders last year. Hard to s

I'd argue that Alonso makes your team structure worse. It'd be better to tie up more money in attacking big hitters as long term it's unlikely you'll have anything more than a 6.0 defender

        • 9 Years

Could be, but last year I struggled to free up funds to afford premium Chelsea/Spurs-defenders because my value was spread in midfield.

IMO not starting with Alonso now would make it really hard to later get him in if your next defender is 6.0 or less. Then you have to downgrade 1.0 elsewhere...if you have Kane and he doesn't start well it's easy but not so easy if you have spread your money.

I'm really not keen on the Chicharito pick. Would love Defoe instead.

Is this worth it: Chicharito, Alonso and Daniels ----> Defoe, Azpi and 4.5 see?

    --------------------Foster----------------------

    Alonso - Trippier - Cedric - Daniels

    ----------Pogba - KDB - Willian----------

    --------Kane - Lukaku - Chicharito-----

Difficult to say but Llorente will undoubtedly be number one. Depends if they can find a formation to fit them both in it. At the start of the season you want a team with as little uncertainty as possible.

If you choose Austin/Gabbi you probably will be priced out of Chica if not leaving 0.5 itb or using 2 transfers.

    For the Sky game:

    Forster

Jesus + Lacazette + Willian -> Kane + Lukaku + Trippier for Sunday

Think I may have a decent flexible strategy for the first few weeks of the season.

Lukaku, Jesus and Ayew + 2m ITB.

That way, if Kane looks essential, I can quickly move to him. If he doesn't I'll have Alli/Eriksen as "coverage".

Alternatively, I can upgrade Ayew to whichever 7m or less striker appears to be best value.

Any thoughts? Kind of a "try before you buy" strategy.....

Surely setting up our teams pre-season is all about "ifs"?

This strategy provides the opportunity to be flexible in light of the first week or two of games.

Can have this team with 2m ITB:

        Fabianski (4.0)
        Kolasniac, Ake, Yoshida (Suttner, 4.0)
        KDB, Salah, Eriksen, Puncheon (Carroll)
        Jesus, Lukaku, Ayew

    Lacazette, Aguero (or Lukaku), Chicharito
