Fantasy Football Scout are delighted to announce Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football as our brand new partner game for the 2017/18 season.

While this may be a new game to many of you, Yahoo is, of course, a hugely well-known and trusted name. They were also one of the first to pioneer an online Fantasy Football game, with their season-long game one of the most engaging around.

Now Yahoo have returned with a daily Fantasy sports offering that we will be covering throughout the season.

That also means we will be able to present you with some fantastic offers, including a huge free-to-play half-season tournament with over £40,000 in prizes and perhaps even the chance to win £1 million. No, really. More on that later this week.

Yahoo are also providing a superb introductory offer for our visitors whereby, if you deposit £5, you’ll get a free £50 credited to your account. See the foot of this article for details on how to sign up and get started.

What is Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football?

If you’ve played any daily Fantasy Football or “DFS” games before, you will be instantly familiar with the concept of the Yahoo game.

You have £200 million to build a team of 11 players that you can enter in a variety of contests that are either free to play or have an entry fee with cash prizes on offer.

Each player has a value assigned which changes week-to-week based on their performance and popularity in the previous Gameweek.

The scoring system is more detailed than both Fantasy Premier League and Sky Sports – but that’s a good thing. Based on Opta data, the scoring brings a wider range of players into the mix, including those often-neglected defensive midfielders.

We will have an in-depth article, examining the nuances of the scoring system, very soon.

Yahoo’s contests allow you to tinker with your line-ups right up until kick-off, so you can monitor teamsheets and use the “late swap” feature to swoop for bargains and remove absent players.

Week to week, we will be bringing you our Yahoo Focus articles to help steer the nucleus of your XI for the weekend contests.

Why Should I play?

While so much of the Yahoo game is familiar and easy to grasp, it’s very different in a number of key ways – not least because it is very friendly for new players.

The game operates a “Fair Play” policy, with many of their contests allowing just a single-team entry, while others allow only up to ten teams per user. This levels the playing field and increases the chances that new players can compete for prizes.

There are also “no veterans” or “rookie only” contests which allow you to play and learn the game before taking on experienced managers in bigger contests. However, if you become a seasoned player, you can, of course, take part in contests that allow 50+ teams.

As mentioned, the scoring system is also finely balanced and perfectly suited to our visitors.

We are all familiar with Opta data and, if you’ve got yourself a Fantasy Football scout membership, you already have access to statistics and tools to help you select teams in the Yahoo game. We’re even building custom tables and will be implementing player prices into those tables in the coming weeks.

The Yahoo game is also fully localised for a UK audience. That may sound like a small thing but, with other daily games talking in dollars and asking you to build “rosters”, it’s nonetheless a welcome touch.

The other main reason to play is that the game has a huge range of contests for all players. There are free-to-play games, contests with entry fees as small as 25p right up to £1,000 for the high rollers.

You can register now and compete in the Gameweek 1 £10k contest that offers a £2k top prize for a £5 entry fee.

How Do I Start?

Yahoo’s Gameweek 1 contests are up and running so you can register an account and get started immediately.

As mentioned, if you register and deposit £5 or more, Yahoo will also give you a £50 bonus to be used in-game.

  • Register here
  • Deposit £5 or more and use the code FANTASY50 to claim your £50 credit
  • Choose a contest and start selecting your first Yahoo squad.

Later this week we will bring you news of the huge Fantasy Football Scout Yahoo Cup contest, which is free to play and with £50k in prizes.

Look out for details of that and further articles on the Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football game to come before August 11.

You must be over 18 years of age, resident in the UK, and of legal capacity to register with Yahoo Daily Sports and open an Account. If you sign up, please always play responsibly.

Bournemouth are stacked attacking wise. I've just spent the past hour researching their pre-season form, quotes from Eddie Howe, and how they finished the end of last season.

    Defence
    A.Smith/Francis - Francis/Cook - Ake - Daniels

The arrival of Ake puts a cloud over the starting prospects of Simon Francis (club captain), Steve Cook and Adam Smith. Potentially, Francis could fill in for Smith at RB, who missed just 2 league games last year and signed a new 4 year deal last month, but has had a few niggles this Summer. Howe on Adam Smith - “He has had some treatment and we are hopeful he will be back with us next week. We expect him to be ready for our first game at West Brom.” (http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/sport/15441906.Howe_hoping_Adam_Smith_will_be_fit_for_Hawthorns_opener)

Charlie Daniels has a reputation for being one of the most attacking fullbacks in the league, so it may come as a surprise that no defender assisted more than his team mate on the opposite flank, last season. Adam Smith matched Kyle Waker with 5 assists, while Daniels notched 3 assists (and 5 goals).

    Midfield
    Stanislas/Fraser - Surman/L.Cook - Arter - Pugh/Ibe

As this average position map shows in their home game vs Stoke in GW36 (http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/matches/855522) and Burnley in GW37 (http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/matches/855532), Bournemouth adopt a 4231 with Lewis Cook and Harry Arter screening the centre backs. It's worth noting that Andrew Surman sustained a medial knee ligament injury on 4th April and was first choice alongside Arter prior to that. Arter is the more ambitious of the midfield pairing but regardless, neither are worthy of fantasy investment in their DM role.

Fantasy prospects in Bournemouth's midfield are the narrow wide players and, until this season, the deep lying forward role occupied to great effect by Josh King. However, Eddie Howe has at least two options for each flank and seemingly, doesn't have a strong preference on his starting pair. No Bournemouth wide player started more than 20 games last season.

Stanislas (6m) - 5.1 PPG - appears first choice when fit, but ongoing groin trouble last season and still reports of groin and hip trouble during pre-season (http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/sport/15433149.Stanislas_could_miss_start_of_Premier_League_season). 7 goals and 5 assists in 18 starts.
Fraser (5.5m) - 3.5 PPG - increasingly used in the second half of the season returning 3 goals and 5 assists in 19 starts.
Pugh (5m) - 3.0 PPG - eventually preferred over Ibe, but returned just 2 goals and 2 assist in 16 starts.
Ibe (5m) - 1.4 PPG - the 15m signing was first choice at the beginning of last season but fell out of favour following a baron return of 0 goals and 0 assists in 13 starts. A glimmer of optimism this season, however, are goals against QPR and Estoril during pre-season.
Gradel (5m) - 0.7 PPG - frozen out last year but has appeared in pre-season and scored vs Estoril.

Fraser looks the safest pick in the absence of Stanislas (two assists vs Yeovil in pre-season worthy of note). For those looking for a punt, I can't see Howe not persisting with the £15m Ibe. If he starts him in Bournemouth's last friendly game against Napoli on Aug 6th, he could very well be worth a shot.

    Front 2
    King - Defoe
Backup - Afobe, Mousset and Wilson.

While King's consistent FPL returns are folklore around these parts (16 goals, 2 assists in 31 starts), it's worth noting that Eddie Howe stumbled upon playing King through the middle. Callum Wilson sustained cruciate knee ligament damage first to his right knee two seasons ago, and then to his left knee last season. With Lys Mousset, a £5.5m signing from Le Havre in July 2016, felt not to have the required fitness and intensity levels (http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/sport/15437199.New_Lys_of_life__Howe_feels_Mousset_is_ready_to_impress), Howe turned to King's pace in partnership with Afobe's physical presence.

It's fair to assume that King will be given the chance to form a new partnership with Defoe. I don't think Defoe walks into this team, however; both Afobe and Mousset have been hot in pre-season (https://www.afcb.co.uk/matches/first-team/2017-18/portsmouth-v-afc-bournemouth). It is worth considering that Defoe turns 35 in October - around a year younger than Ibrahimovic, who's performances last year were considered to have lost an edge on the brilliance that went before. Strikers rely on such fine margins that any Defoe prospector should keep a close eye on his sharpness and missed chances statistic.

When Aké played last year, Francis played right back. Smith moved to the midfield - hence his stats. When Francis was out injured, Bournemouth lost badly. He'll be nailed.

      Good post....

I'm thinking of getting King and Austin as my 2nd and third strikers....

They could be great value! King was on fire last season....and could out point defoe.

I doubt it. He's now losing out for goals/clean sheets and he won't be on pens this year - Defoe is likely to be the main man.

Good post. I think there's a reason Francis became a CB and didn't stick to RB. I also think there's a reason he went back to RB when Ake played. The truth probably lies somewhere
between Adam Smith then, and now. It may prove rotational to begin with (tough games Francis, easier games Smith), before Smith takes over... for sure.

      -------------------------------------------------

      When Francis took over CB, 2 years ago;

“I am almost living my full-back role through Smudge now,” he added. “I am screaming at him to get up and down because he has the energy to do it in the same way I have.

“He is younger than me and has the legs to get up and down all game and real quality to do what’s needed at both ends.

“I think he needs a run of matches to get to the top of his game and it would be great to see him do that.”

Good post. Thanks. At 5.1 PPG (same as Ozil!) for 6m, Stanislas was cememted into my team, but his injury caused me a lot of headache. I did a quick re-calulation of King's PPG if he had been classified as a FWD last year - to around 4.3 PPG I think (was 4.9 PPG as a MID). Still decent "value" at 7.5m compared to other strikers but, with the intro of Defoe, that "may" be at risk until we know how they set-up and play together. Will now do without Bournmouth attacking assets until see how they set-up.

Great post. I'm on Fraser and Daniels at the moment. Need to decide between the latter and Ake.

Howe has been saying very positive things about Max Gradel this pre-season. It would be a massive surprise if he was to start GW1, but he does look to be in Bournemouth's plans having turned down a loan move from Toulouse.

I have calculated PPM last year divided by price this year to see where I can find the most value (simple analysis). I included only players that played at least 2000 minutes last year. Players changed position like King is also not included in my analysis.

From my calculations I clearly see the most value in goalkeepers and defenders. The difference between the keepers are quite small compared to the differences between the defenders. The value was bigger in the midfield compared to the forwards (in general). Therefore you could argue for a 5-4-1, but for flexibility I have chosen 4-4-2.

Based on my calculations I tried to find the team that gives me the highest PPM (last year) based on this year's prices in a 4-4-2-formation (bench: 4.0, 4.0, 4.5, 4.5). I haven't used any specific excel-formula to maximize the PPM, but tried many different combinations.

This is the team I came up with (PPM in () )

    Grant (3.8)
    Alonso (5.7)/Coleman (5.1)/Bertrand (4.4)/Daniels (3.9)
    Alli (6.1)/Eriksen (6.1)/Mane (5.8)/Phillips (4.3)
    Kane (C) (2*7.5)/Llorente (4.4)

    Sum: 64.6

My conclusions based on my findings:
    - No need to invest in premium keepers
    - Premium defenders is good value
    - The last year's Spurs and Liverpool-midfielders still good value

Sorry for long post, but maybe Interesting for some of you 🙂

I'll tell you now, no one will ever win this game with a 5-4-1.

Played for over 10 years and the midfielders are always the strongest point scorers across the board. 3-5-2 is, for me, the best option.

      1. GE

I wouldn't choose 5-4-1, but definetely not 3-5-2 based on what I found from last year. 4 at the back for sure based on the clearly better PPM for defenders than midlfielders in the 5.5-6.5-bracket.

So you'll have five 9.0+ mil midfielders this season? You can't possibly know for sure, regardless of experience or history, if the highest scoring players (let's say they are mids) are going to be the best value players this year. And if they are, then the higher cost means you can't have 5 anyway.

In a 5-4-1 there are 4 midfielders. That's potentially 4 premium mids. Are you really arguing that the only way to win is to have 5 premium mids? Let us see your team!? 😀

Um. I think you're trying a bit hard with that one. I finished over 1 million places ahead of him in the last two seasons.

But that doesn't matter. There are plenty of factors that looking at someone's OR doesn't take into account. One of those factors is the new information from the new season, including player prices and the points that they will score, which is one of my points.

The other point is that Mr Davis seems to be claiming that five 9.0+m midfielders is essential for winning FPL 2017/18. It would be nice if you could address my points, because I'm now more confuse that there are two people who believe this! I feel like you just didn't like my tone, or my username, or something, and you wanted to make a jibe or 'school' me.

            Any clarification is welcome 🙂

That's true. This analysis is only based on players that played above 2000 minutes and PPM is just on average. During the season it's you could of course get more points by stifting back and forth between players in form and not in form and you can obtain better team with hugger value. This team is 100.0 and the numbers is just on average. IMO this could be a good benchmark for what kind of team to start with.

    Mitrovic - one to watch?

Seems a lot of people are looking for a 3rd striker that offers value. Newcastle seem to offer potential value should the popular pick Charlie Austin fail to secure a place in Southampton's starting lineup. Below I've taken preseason minutes and returns to give a simple breakdown and any information that might be useful in suggesting who starts

Opening 6 fixtures: TOT, hud, WHM, swa, STO, bri

    Dwight Gayle (£6.5m)
    Starts: 2
    Appearances: 5
    Minutes: 225
    Returns: 3 goals, 1 assist

    Ayoze Perez (£5.5m)
    Starts: 2
    Appearances: 5
    Minutes: 237
    Returns: 0

    Aleksandar Mitrovic (£5.0m)
    Starts: 3
    Appearances: 5
    Minutes: 225
    Returns: 3 goals

Benitez opted for a 4-4-1-1 last season, with Diame or Perez in the hole and Gayle leading the line for the majority of the season (bar injury). In short, I think he will continue with this formation, though it is hard to ignore that both his strikers are firing well in preseason, where his attacking midfielders are struggling to create a spark. Ideally, if he changed to a 4-4-2, we could be onto a winner with Mitrovic.

The wingers in Ritchie, Atsu and Murphy have pace and like to cross so having a big target man like Mitrovic (6''2) who is good in the air, alongside a typical poacher in Gayle (5''8) who scored hardly any of his 23 goals last season with his head (most coming from around the 6 yard box) could stand to Newcastle's advantage early on until they sign a new striker.

Alternatively Benitez could stick to 4-4-1-1 and trial Diame in the hole with Gayle up top like last season, considering he has Shelvey and Merino to play CM. However, Benitez has used Diame deeper throughout preseason, so it seems the midfield 3 will battle for two places. In my opinion, Shelvey will get a CM spot allowing him to move forward to attack/ create, with Merino and Diame fighting for the more defensive position. Isaac Hayden is also there as an option.

Though it's possible Newcastle might trial a 3-5-2 like they worked on briefly last season, it has not been done in preseason so far. With one game remaining, hopefully the lineups and Benitez' interview can give us some indication about Mitrovic's chances of starting the new campaign.

TL;DR - Gayle is certain to start, and at £6.5m makes an easy alternative to Austin should we need a backup plan. There are a few factors that hinge on whether Mitrovic gets a place in the starting 11 that might become clear in Newcastle's last preseason match. Definitely one to watch for a mere £5.0m as that extra cash can be reinvested elsewhere.

I'm avoiding Newcastle ATM but I've seen Atsu in real life in 2 championship games last season and he impressed me.
He'd be my pick when they have a good run of fixtures and if Rafa has him nailed.

      Two facts on their games.

Their Yahoo Fantasy Football blog inspired this website

Two seasons ago I was exchanging emails with Paul Heaton - of Housemartins fame - helping him with his Yahoo squad.

He seemed a lovely guy but, mid-season I got slower responding to his queries and then he gave up.

          I felt terrible.

He's seen by the club as a long term Clynne replacement & having Ribery in his pocket last night backs it up.
There's an outside chance if he starts well, he could find a permanent spot.

I do understand the rationale for people drafting willian in their team. He doesn't score many with open play. He definitely wont start after 2 or 3 gameweeks. He is more of a punt than potential scorer.

I think for people not to have chelsea cover is just psychological... myself included... Willian can produce the odd goal, free kick maybe... Yes he s short term, but with Pedro out and Morata a gamble i feel out of premium strikers, what other way into the chelsea team?
