Leicester City completed their fourth senior summer signing with the capture of Manchester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho for an undisclosed fee, understood to be £25 million.

The 20-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Foxes and, according to Leicester manager Craig Shakespeare, can take the next step in his career at the King Power Stadium:

“Kelechi is an enormously talented player that has shown a huge amount of promise at every level in which he’s played. We’ve tracked his progress for some time, so we know how much quality he’ll bring to the squad. He’s young, he’s hungry, he’s ready for the next stage of his development, and I’m delighted that will be with Leicester City.â€

The History

Iheanacho began his youth career at Taye Academy in his native Nigeria, before linking up with City in January 2014, although he would only formally sign with the Citizens in October 2014 once he turned 18 years old.

After spending the remainder of the 2014/15 season representing City at both youth and U21 level, Iheanacho made a big impression during pre-season ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.

He made his professional debut as a late substitute in a 4-0 win over Watford in August 2015 and scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace in the following league match.

The Nigerian ended up making 26 league appearances in 2015/16, registering eight goals and two assists.

Iheanacho began last season in favour under new City boss Pep Guardiola, producing three goals and three assists in his first seven league outings while Sergio Aguero was suspended.

But following the arrival of Gabriel Jesus in January, Iheanacho fell down the pecking order and only made five substitute appearances from that point onwards.

After scoring 11 goals in 12 appearances for Nigeria at U17 level and playing two matches for the U20s, Iheanacho made his senior debut against Swaziland in November 2015.

He has made 10 appearances for his country, producing five goals and two assists.

The Prospects

The significant outlay on Iheanacho indicates that Craig Shakespeare sees the Nigerian as a worthy partner for Jamie Vardy in attack.

Club-record signing Islam Slimani endured a difficult first season at the King Power Stadium, managing just seven goals and four assists, while Ahmed Musa was even less successful, netting just twice.

After taking over from Claudio Ranieri in February, Shakespeare generally favoured a 4-4-1-1 formation, with Shinji Okazaki in the support striker role behind lone forward Vardy.

Okazaki’s place in the starting XI now looks vulnerable, with Iheanacho certainly capable of playing in that position. Although it’s unlikely he’ll be able to match the work rate of the Japanese international, which was crucial to the Foxes’ title success in 2015/16.

Iheanacho could also operate in a wider role, although that’s not a familiar position, while Marc Albrighton, Riyad Mahrez and Demarai Gray are all strong options on the flanks.

Iheanacho & Vardy – Passes Received – 2016/17 – All Matches
members

The heatmaps above – showing the zones where both Iheanacho (left) and Vardy (right) received passes last season – offers some clues as to possible roles.

Clearly, Vardy can either be deployed or will gravitate to Leicester’s left flank. In contrast, Iheanacho received most of his passes for Man City closer to the right channel. Given that evidence, there is every indication that both strikers can operate as a pairing, using their pace and movement to stretch opponents.

Iheanacho should be capable of adjusting to his new surrounds and the potential partnership with Vardy. He boasts a well-rounded game and can hold the ball up to bring his team-mates into play, but it’s his instincts in the box that are key to this talents.

The left-footed striker recorded a goal conversion rate of 18.2% last season and a hugely impressive 28.6% back in 2015/16.

Indeed, no player who has scored at least 10 goals since the start of the 2015/16 season has a better minutes-per-goal rate (106.5) than Iheanacho.

The Nigerian also has clever movement and enough pace over short distances to get away from defenders, while his touch and control are exemplary for one so young.

Neither he nor Vardy boast the greatest physical attributes, though, and both offer a limited aerial threat, although Iheanacho does stand at 6ft 1in tall.

But the pair are undeniably goalscorers, and should they be able to form an understanding quickly, the Foxes could improve significantly on the 48 goals they managed last term.

Iheanacho only played 537 minutes last season – a small sample size – but impressively he averaged a shot every 24 minutes.

That was better than Slimani (36.57) and significantly superior to both Vardy (53.02) and Okazaki (54.41).

The former City forward also led the way in terms of creativity among the quartet.

He produced a key pass every 40.62 minutes – far better than Slimani (75.29), Vardy (90.65) and Okazaki (112.71).

While he was part of a far more potent City attack, the numbers are hugely encouraging regarding Iheanacho’s prospects, particularly when we consider his 7.0 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). His Sky Sports price is a rather less appealing 10.2m.

By comparison, Vardy comes in at 8.5 in FPL, with Slimani and Okazaki priced at 7.0 and 5.5 respectively.

Leicester’s opening fixtures (ars BHA mun CHE hud LIV), along with the uncertainty over the future of key midfielder Mahrez, will likely find Fantasy managers showing extreme caution over the early Gameweeks.

That could give us the chance to assess how the expected Vardy/Iheanacho partnership shapes up, while the Nigeria international may also need time to build his match sharpness, having failed to feature for Man City during the pre-season.

Whether Iheanacho operates in the support striker role or alongside Vardy in a 4-4-2, his contributions over the past two seasons suggest that he should flourish if handed regular pitch-time.

Providing that Leicester can build on the renaissance under Shakespeare at the back end of last season, there’s every chance Iheanacho can emerge as one of the leading mid-price forward options in FPL.

Leicester’s dire pre-season form and a testing opening schedule makes early investment unlikely, but the potential from Gameweek 7 – when the fixture list turns in the Foxes’ favour – could book Iheanacho a place our squads.

I was going to submit this as an article, but I don't think I'd be able to hit the word count. With any luck, a generous mod might hot topic it!

Where should you invest your £100m budget? What position tends to get you the greatest rewards for your money ... Defence, midfield or attack?

To work this out, I looked at the top 10 scoring players in each position and averaged out their total points scored and their price.

The best midfielders outscored the best defenders by 35% but they cost 53% more.

The best forwards outscored the best defenders by 21% but cost 52% more.

The best midfielders outscored the best forwards by 12% but only cost 1% more.

The conclusion? Invest heavily in midfield. Possibly go 3-5-2 with lots of premium mids. Forwards offer comparatively poor value for money. Spending a lot more on a forward doesn't correlate to an equal uplift in points. The best bang for your buck is the middle of the park.

There has been a lot of talk about investing in defence this season. While the top 10 defenders can't keep up with the top 10 mids and attackers, there isn't a straight line correlation with spending more money on a mid or a striker and getting an equal uplift in points for the extra dough you splash out. For forwards, the points uplift from the extra spend is weaker than ever.

For example, if you chose a £10.5m forward over a £7m defender, it will cost you 50% more for the forward, but, judging by last season's data, you'd only get an extra 21% of points.

3-5-2 early doors is a no go for me and always has been.

      Much more potential value to

      A) cover forwards that get form and rise quickly in value (masses see a striker scoring well is always a bonus)

      B) 4.5 mids can gain value and actually offer much better then 4.5 and above bench forwards that lose value

FPL is skewed towards the midfield. The game is won and lost in midfield for me.

Won and lost on all positions and points.

Value is a season long perception. Compare Jesus 1/2 season to Ali at the start and you'll skew it to forwards.

Defenders is about jumping on and off at the right time.

You won't find a single person who had alonso from day one, nor will you find someone who had Harry Kane throughout the season without fail (excluding dead teams)

There are more mids than forwards so there is bound to be higher scoring mids. Sad.

Well it's value over replacement player. Like what you say, costs more for more points. It's why this 5 at the back malarky can't work. Yeah get a nice rank, but you can't win it.

Unfortunately left this on the last post

Did a little forum searching this afternoon and came up with two takeaways from the fans of CP and Southampton.

    1. Many are as confused about who de Boer will start at the back as we are but they reckon Tomkins is probably NOT nailed. Many expect another signing on the way as well and the Schlupp vs PvA nightmare seems like it will carry on for a while.

    2. Almost every fan there believes Gabbiadini, rather than Austin, up top would make for Southampton's best lineup heading into GW1 with a few lineups having the two playing together or with Gabs on one of the wings. The takeaway I took is that the belief appears to be that Gabbi will find a way to stay on the pitch and quite possibly alone up front. Very few reckon Austin will play behind Gabbiadini if Austin does make his way on to the pitch though and that makes sense given Austin has never played anything but striker at any level, but the press has said this summer that the southampton camp thinks he may be put in the position of an attacking mid. I'm sure that saga is far from put to bed but the fans seem to think Gabbiadini > Austin for now.

    3. Seeing as VVD is still a Saints player a fair few still have them in what they consider to be the team's strongest XI. This is normal and given what we know to start the season, likely not an issue in our selections of Saints CBs. However, if VVD does stay with the team inexplicably, it may be worth monitoring the Stephens vs Yoshida debate as even though the latter has looked good in preseason, many consider the battle for second CB to be more of a toss-up than we give it credit for, I believe.

Remember these are just the opinions of fans and not professionals or insiders (at least not in most cases) so make of it what you will but I still think its interesting to hear from people whose voices aren't tainted by templates, budget players, and the temptations of fantasy

I'm with you and that price point is becoming easier to maneuver with the more options that are being added. Iheanacho and Hernandez along with a few even cheaper make 7.0 a good place to start and downgrade if needed.

Don't necessarily agree with the first part, but there is some truth to the second. Regardless, when they first got Gabbiadini the team finally looked ready to score goals after plenty of toothless months to begin the season. Austin has been unspectacular in a saints kit and can't create as much nor arguably finish as well and I think that will see him either alongside Gabs but not as the focal point, on for cameos, or forced to adapt as an attacking mid/winger. I definitely rate Austin but I think what's most important to note is that I think Gabbiadini is much more flexible than Austin by position and thus will find a way to stay on the pitch more often than not, also fancy him to be the more clinical player.

Austin has been sitting in my team since the beginning..
And now I am left with doubts..

      Will he play or not!
Gabby was so much frustrating by the end of last year that he broke the record of zero point in a DGW where he played both games..

I understand the feeling of being burned by him last year but given the opportunity Gabs has shown he's quite the explosive player and can finish the chances a pretty pace saints team provides.

Austin will likely play in my opinion but he'll be less nailed and I think will often be subbed at the 60' to 70' mark and that was my concern about him from the onset

A lot of the fans favour Stephens and rate him highly. However, I think it's partly due to being one of their own. When all's said and done, Yoshi seems ahead in the pecking order.

For 10.0, most people would presumably be looking for a captaincy option.

Does KDB actually provide a reliable captaincy option in a team most expect to scores a significant amount of goals.

In all likelihood I'll have him, but only because I'll probably have Kane + Kaku and I don't see how to get more City unless I unbalance my side.

I think KDB's perception of lacking goalthreat is slightly skewed. Dude hit the woodwork 9 times in PL last year. Imagine how he would be regarded if even 50% of those went in last year.
He's the closest thing to being nailed in a Pep team, on set pieces, and playing for the team likely to score more than anyone.

Fairly reliable as a cap option imo but obvioulsy not equal to Kane and Lukaku in that sense.

          Hey TFF.

          Sorry, missed your reply.

I feel good about my team. Only player that I feel is subject to change is Austin. May upgrade to an 8m option and downgrade Zaha.

          How's yours shaping up?

            No problem man 🙂

Unfortunately things are looking bleak for Austin's prospects. Need more clarity on what is going on at Saints, they have such fantastic fixtures to begin with.

Mine's changing every day - I have kind of identified a core now and I'm trying to build my team around that. 😉

Nothing too bad, one of the guards was broken on the side, but I decided to use it carefully

Then, I got carried away and the guard fell off and I shaved a tiny bit off the side - wasnt much. Like half a penny size

I trimmed by beard short too so it's not too noticeable

And then it turns out that Costa is the better choice all along, and you might as well have started with him and invested heavily elsewhere. Like in De Bruyne, who was the highest scoring player after 5 GWs other than Capoue. And then Sanchez.

Disagree. Earliest Kane has ever scored for Spurs is last year's GW4. GW7 the year before was his first goal. He won the Golden Boot both years. Definitely isn't guaranteed that Lukaku's gonna start off hot like Ibra. People going without one of them is understandable and may pay off big. Not to mention factoring in Wembley for Kane

Shame Villa aren't in the PL but Villa Park is a fantastic and historic ground and some atmosphere when the Holte End is in full voice.

Best atmosphere I've experienced was Forest v Derby at the City Ground but again not PL.

I'd say PL wise St James's Park is hard to beat.

Not Premier League, and "best" is a dodgy adjective for it, but very few, if any, fixtures in world football have an atmosphere to match an Old Firm game for intensity.

Do it! My failed comment can be found below, but here it is again

I'm giving it a go. You must select defenders with attacking potential, and playing out of position. There are only a about 7 that for the bill. If you go for it, go for it.

This is what I'm going with....

      Begovic
      Alonso / Valencia / Kolasinic / Kompany / Bertrand
      Kdb / Mane / Salah
      Lukaku (c) / Austin

My only concern is not having Kane.

I would say Bailly & Lindelof in a back 4 would make sense. It would be strange of mourinho to spend such an amount on lindelof & then not play him. They may play a back 3 also which would allow one of smalling/jones to come in maybe to help lindelof out a bit. But either way i think both Bailly & Lindelof are nailed.

Probably Darmian LB & Valencia RB, although Blind could start LB also, but he is terribly slow for a fullback or wingback role.

Do you think Mourinho will start Phil Jones ahead of a centreback he just paid £30m for? Not saying he will or won't it just would be very strange. Surely he has to give indelof benefit of the doubt & play him until he drops a clanger, rather than assume he will drop a clanger & bench him? I can't see Lindy being benched, maybe i'm wrong though

I know they will score goals, but Spurs also score buckets of goals, and United will with their easy fixtures, as will Pool; in these 3 teams, all their premium picks are 100% and will get the full game time

Well, KDB started 89% of City's PL games last season when fit and was subbed off 11 times. So, he might play 9 in 10 and get an average of 80 minutes per game based on last season.

The question is whether his production (and City's goals) will be sufficient to compensate.

Actually, 100% nailed and 90 minutes is hard to find. Hazard did play every game when fit but was subbed off in around half of them. Sanchez started 95% of games for Arsenal when fit, so even he can be benched (following an international break for example).

      1. F4L
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 4 months ago

fair point on KDB; I just feel with the addition of Bernardo Silva, and the return of form for David Silva, his pitch time will be limited even further; add to that the form of Raheem, and then Kun and Jesus' playtime seems limited. Fwiw, I think Jesus is the only City player worth getting, as Alli/Mane will outscore KDB imo

They lack a proven striker upfront. And there's no real back up for wingbacks and CMs. But if Hazard and Fab fire, they will get in the Top 4.

They have strengthened defensively, haven't they? And they are attempting to replace Costa with Morata. I think you are being blinded by other teams signing players you've heard about whereas Chelsea have signed players you've not heard about.

breaking down that defence and Azpi is the only decent defender imo. Sooner or later they will be exposed bigtime, and it wont be so easy to squeeze out these 1-0 2-0 wins. CL footie will put a massive strain on their squad as well

How do we rate the United defenders individually then? Darmian, Lindelof, Smalling? Don't we all expect cleans from them? Chelsea will be stronger defensively as a collective unit once their signings bed in. Hazard out makes them appear very weak especially given that Costa is out of favor too. They have so much physicality in their game though, I see them overrunning most sides outside top 6. They need numbers no doubt and CL will put a massive strain for sure but I think the implication especially from the guy saying "No chance" implies a lack of quality, which isn't the case.
