The Technical Area makes a return for the new season and I’m delighted to have joined the Fantasy Football Scout writing team to bring this to you.

These articles will mainly be available for members following Gameweek 1 but, for my debut, I offer a preview of what is to come with some analysis of Sunday’s Wembley showpiece.

The final domestic appetiser to the upcoming season, Sunday’s Community Shield between champions Chelsea and FA Cup winners Arsenal proved a sedate affair that will perhaps be remembered more for the involvement of referee Bobby Madley than any single player’s contribution.

Nonetheless, as our last chance to observe two high-profile Premier League sides in action before the Gameweek 1 deadline – and with many popular FPL assets presumed to participate – interest from the Fantasy community was understandably high.

With only the one game to analyse this week, we’ll be focusing our attention on the performances of two newly-signed Arsenal players who put forward interesting, if very different, showings on the field.

Sead Kolašinac

We’ll start with Sead Kolašinac, whose afternoon threatened to be something of a non-event after he was named among the substitutes to open the match. A nasty head injury to Per Mertesacker on the half-hour mark, however, gave the Bosnian his chance to shine; an opportunity he seized with both hands.

Though pre-season projections had earmarked Kolašinac to compete for a spot as a left-wing back in Arsenal’s 3-4-2-1 system, Wenger’s substitution saw the Bosnian fielded as a left-sided central defender alongside Nacho Monreal and Rob Holding.

Typically, we would have expected this more defensive positioning to have impinged upon Kolašinac’s chances to get forward in support of the Arsenal attack. Yet analysing our game data, we can observe that Kolašinac was frequently occupying space upon the left-flank, consistently drifting out to the touchline to receive possession:

Kolasinac – Passes Received
members

This profile translates much more readily to the heatmap of a traditional left wing-back than that of a centre half. In fact, it is eerily reminiscent of the performance and positioning of another left-sided wide player participating in Sunday’s match:

Kolasinac vs Alonso – Touches
members

Given Alonso’s barnstorming FPL campaign in 2016/17, Kolašinac’s tendencies to occupy the same attacking space – even in spite of his ostensibly more defensive position – bodes well for his likelihood of producing attacking returns heading into the new season.

The defender also demonstrated an ability to pose a threat on the end of set-pieces, notching Arsenal’s equaliser by rising to divert Granit Xhaka’s cross into the net.

The underlying numbers for Kolašinac were promising too. Despite playing only limited minutes, the defender produced 17 passes in opposition territory (with a 100% success rate), including five in the final third. These compared favourably to those of Alonso (10, 5) and Victor Moses (12, 7).

It should be noted that Hector Bellerin – playing on the right-hand flank of Arsenal’s formation – outshone even Kolašinac in this regard, with 29 passes in the opposing half and 21 in the danger zone, while he created two excellent goalscoring opportunities in the process.

Such a performance demonstrates the attacking potential of the wing-back position within Arsenal’s current set-up and underlines the tantalising prospects of either player as an FPL asset moving forward.

Kolašinac also put in an impressive defensive performance, winning all three of his tackles and racking up five recoveries – traits which would translate well into FPL’s Bonus Point System (BPS).

Alexandre Lacazette

In contrast to Kolašinac’s impressive debut, Lacazette cut a significantly less imposing figure during Sunday’s match-up.

Often isolated in space against Chelsea’s trio of centre backs, Lacazette amassed just 24 touches during his disappointing 66-minute spell – fewer than any other starter. Of these, far too many were found by dropping deep into space ahead of Chelsea’s backline, from which he was quickly smothered by defensive pressure.

Lacazette – Touches
members

The Frenchmen displayed occasional glimpses of his attacking prowess. On two or three occasions, Lacazette found himself in dangerous positions; only for Chelsea’s defensive line to close on him before he had a chance to capitalise.

His brightest moment came in the first-half, when he was able to free himself on the edge of the penalty area and curl an early shot against the post. Yet this effort would prove to be Lacazette’s only goal attempt of the match and he would be replaced shortly after the hour mark by Olivier Giroud (who himself failed to make much of an impression, albeit in limited time).

The usual caveats apply here, of course – this was only a single match, and consequently it is certainly much too early for us to jump to any definitive conclusions about Lacazette’s Fantasy prospects for the coming year. For the record, I am optimistic of his season-long goalscoring potential, as are our Rate My Team projections.

It is similarly important to note that Arsenal were missing the combined creative impetus of Mesut Özil, Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey for this fixture – players who would have both demanded defensive attention and worked to produce more threatening through-balls to the striker.

Nonetheless, even after claiming his first trophy as a member of Arsene Wenger’s squad, this was likely not a match that Lacazette will want to remember.

Gabbi I am almost certain will start, i've scoured the Southampton forums quite a bit. Cedric I reckon will as well, the new manager likes him and he was involved in training of late and their last few matches of preseason, underlying attacking stats look dreamy too.
TFM may not start GW1 but I reckon he'll come in eventually to take over within the first few weeks but just in case i feel confident starting any of the three I have listed as starters

Appreciate the input but I tend to avoid wildcards and defender transfers early on as much as I can, I don't think i'll be knee-jerk transferring out my southampton defenders if they get off to a rocky start because of those fixtures. Could come off very well I reckon but I see your point

  13. Super Cup Verdict - avoid United's attack
    theBoose
    • 13 Years
    8 years, 9 months ago

Thought I'd provide everyone with my thoughts regarding the Super Cup, specifically in relation to United players and how they will fair in our fantasy teams:

De Gea - The Spanish shot-stopper can't be faulted for either goal. Made some big saves that kept United in with a sniff. He is definitely the most nailed on route into the Manchester defence. Verdict - Buy, if you have the funds.

Valencia - He looked promising going forward, especially in the first half. Defensively, gave the ball away too easily and was late in to a few challenges. He also failed to track Isco for Madrid' second. Against weaker opposition, he is one to watch. Verdict - Monitor, there are cheaper alternatives

Lindelof - Has struggled throughout preseason and this game was no different. Let Casemiro run free for Madrid's first goal. Verdict - Continue derailing the train (Sell)

Smalling - Although he looked better than the Smalling of 16/17, it was clear that he missed his best bud Bailly at the back. Made some good blocks and clearances. Verdict - Buy, if partnered with Bailly

Darmian - Was solid for the most part in defence, although Casemiro hit the crossbar early on due to poor marking. I believe that he's still down the pecking order when it comes to the starting XI. Verdict - Sell

Lingard - Not sure how he got the start to be honest, Martial would have been much more effective. Rightly subbed at the half after picking up a first half booking. Verdict - Stay well away.

Matic - Positionally astute and solid in the tackle. Registered the assist for United's goal, after firing a solid shot at Nevas. For 5.5, I think he's definitely worth a punt and may prove to be a cheap way into some points. Verdict - Monitor, more attacking options at the price.

Herrera - Had no real say in this game at all, and could not get on the same page as his Madrid counterparts. Always looked rushed when in possession. Verdict - Nope

Pogba - Should have passed in a first half break which was United's best attacking chance. He looked tidy in possession but was poor in his distribution. Seemed to be sit a little deeper than everyone expected. Missed an open header early in the second half. Verdict - Sell

Mkhitaryan - Looked good going forward early on but, disappeared as the game went on. Unfortunately lost his footing on an early individual break. Reappeared for the final 15 minutes but, was still unable to thread any needles. Verdict - Sell

Lukaku - Missed an absolute sitter, made up for, by scoring an absolute sitter. For the most part he was controlled well by Varane and Ramos but, looked tidy under foot when he got hold of the ball. Verdict - Monitor

    Subs
Rashford - Ran at the Madrid backline with pace and skill when he came on, yet was letdown by his decision making. Should have equalised late on. Verdict - Stay away.

Fellaini - Got into the thick of the action and made United more threatening with his presence. Looked assured with his passing although, he is likely to be used as a bench player this season. Verdict - Don't touch

United set up in a 3-4-2-1 formation, with Mkhi and Pogba sitting behind Lukaku up front. Lingard and Valencia were deployed in wingback roles, with Matic sitting just ahead of Herrera in the middle of the park. With Jones and Bailly suspended, United played with a make shift backline. For the most part the back three were solid, barring Lindelof's lack of marking for Madrid's first. The major threat came via the flanks, with both Valencia and Lingard put under pressure early on. Going forward, Valencia offered the most attacking threat of all defenders, with Smalling's interceptions and presence in the box proving worthy of consideration. It will be interesting to see the United defence once Bailly is back. Going out on a limb, I think Jose will shift between a back 3 (Smalling - Bailly - Jones) and 4 (Blind - Bailly - Smalling - Valencia) dependent on opposition. Of the United defenders, my picks would be:

    1. De Gea - most nailed and save points
    2. Smalling - cheapest defender, will play both formations
    3. Valencia - attacking threat, playing OOP in a 3 back
Jones - One to watch, cheapest route

Going forward United seemed to lack cohesiveness on their attacks, either losing possession when on the ball or trying to force poor passes. The lack of fluidity between Lukaku and his midfielders looks troubling for those going with the 48.7% selected man. I'm sure that over time they will get on the same wavelength but, how long that will take is still and unknown. Matic ran the show in the middle of the park and registered an assist from his long range shot, which Navas fumbled into Lukaku's path. For his price, he may prove to be cheap alternative into the United attack. Bear in mind, Matic collected 8 assist last season. My picks from United's attack are as follows:

    1. Lukaku - Nailed and United's main threat
    2. Matic - Cheap alternative and will pick up attacking returns
    3. Pogba - Will play, good underlying stats
Rashford - One to watch, if given minutes

In conclusion and in my personal opinion, I will be staying clear of United's attack early on. Once they start clicking together, then they will be considered again. Although cautious of doing so, I'm going with the United defence, whether it be De Gea or Smalling is still to be decided. I believe that against lower league opposition they will keep clean sheets and Jose will implement his defensive tactics and shut up shop late on in bigger games that are tight.

TL;DR - Buy United defenders and wait on their attackers to click together before committing.

This. Lukaku being "controlled well by Varane and Ramos" doesn't really justify not having him against West Ham's defence.

Martial didn't even come on when they were looking for a goal (despite doing well against Madrid preseason). Pereira wasn't even on the bench.

My conclusion: Think we'll see a few 1-0s and no surprise Jose got so many draws last season. Martial to leave in January.

Matic is 5.0, not 5.5 Beloved of casuals, utterly spurned by FFS - I say the casuals have it right. He's nailed on for me in my starting XI and I reckon a bandwagon will be forming once he tots up a few assists.

Not taking a dig at you (well maybe I am) but convinced with a player typically means I have x amount in the bank and after searching long and hard, a player who's got an assist in pre-season and coincidentally is worth that same amount x is the solution to all my problems. You may arrive at the same player, but free up funds elsewhere and if he still remains, only then is he the one.

This post doesn't make sense, haven't read it tbh.

This game was very different for Utd than most of the coming PL games. They were the 'outsider' here, against stronger opposition. Take the two first PL games, WHM and swa - totally different thing.

Doesn't make sense to draw conclusion abt Utd attack after they played one of the very best, if not the best, team in the world

McManaman on BT Sport summed it up for me when he said that they won't be facing the quality of Real Madrid in the Premier league. They actually hung in there quite well me Rashford could have equalised. I'm no United fan but I still think Lukaku can score against West Ham and others. So no need to panic for me.

I wasn't that impressed with Mkhi and Pogba want as attacking as the formation suggested he might be..so monitoring these two

      Disagree a bit.

Lukaku looks a good option. Pogba had some very good chances that could have gone either way.

      Plus the RM factor

Exactly as I foresaw things. I'm happy with Kane/Jesus up top and Baily for the Utd CS and Pogba for an element of attacking cover. Can always move him on if he doesn't do much.

I just don't see enough goals and this could very well start vs West Ham. Everyone is backing a Lukaku haul but this is exactly the type of game last season that we couldn't break teams down in. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it 1-1. Lukaku could well be a better captain option in away games. We'll see.

Regarding Lukaku, he got in a position to score two sitters against the best team in the world in what wasn't a great performance from the team. Bodes well considering their upcoming opposition.

For the most part I agree with the analysis of the individual performances.

Mourinho started though with a 5 3 1 1 with Mkhi operating a free role behind Lukaku. Playing on the counter attack clearly didn't work for them so he switchen to a 4 3 3 with Rashford coming on and putting more pressure on RM.

They looked a lot better in the second half and I presume that is how they will play against weaker oposition. Lukaku is still a valid pick, given his PL record.

RM midfield was the key there, they won't play against Modric, Kroos, Isco and Casmeiro or anyone even close to their qualities.

Ditching/ignoring United assets because of a game against the best team in the world seems a little premature to me. I'm expecting them to score 2 or 3 against West Ham and Swansea in GWs 1 and 2.

United looked tired, bored and unfocused. On the plus side it was a perfectly timed wake-up call. Lukaku is going nowhere from my team. But I'd avoid the rest, perhaps except de Gea and Miki - IF the latter will start, which is a big if.
