The Technical Area makes a return for the new season and I’m delighted to have joined the Fantasy Football Scout writing team to bring this to you.

These articles will mainly be available for members following Gameweek 1 but, for my debut, I offer a preview of what is to come with some analysis of Sunday’s Wembley showpiece.

The final domestic appetiser to the upcoming season, Sunday’s Community Shield between champions Chelsea and FA Cup winners Arsenal proved a sedate affair that will perhaps be remembered more for the involvement of referee Bobby Madley than any single player’s contribution.

Nonetheless, as our last chance to observe two high-profile Premier League sides in action before the Gameweek 1 deadline – and with many popular FPL assets presumed to participate – interest from the Fantasy community was understandably high.

With only the one game to analyse this week, we’ll be focusing our attention on the performances of two newly-signed Arsenal players who put forward interesting, if very different, showings on the field.

Sead Kolašinac

We’ll start with Sead Kolašinac, whose afternoon threatened to be something of a non-event after he was named among the substitutes to open the match. A nasty head injury to Per Mertesacker on the half-hour mark, however, gave the Bosnian his chance to shine; an opportunity he seized with both hands.

Though pre-season projections had earmarked Kolašinac to compete for a spot as a left-wing back in Arsenal’s 3-4-2-1 system, Wenger’s substitution saw the Bosnian fielded as a left-sided central defender alongside Nacho Monreal and Rob Holding.

Typically, we would have expected this more defensive positioning to have impinged upon Kolašinac’s chances to get forward in support of the Arsenal attack. Yet analysing our game data, we can observe that Kolašinac was frequently occupying space upon the left-flank, consistently drifting out to the touchline to receive possession:

Kolasinac – Passes Received
members

This profile translates much more readily to the heatmap of a traditional left wing-back than that of a centre half. In fact, it is eerily reminiscent of the performance and positioning of another left-sided wide player participating in Sunday’s match:

Kolasinac vs Alonso – Touches
members

Given Alonso’s barnstorming FPL campaign in 2016/17, Kolašinac’s tendencies to occupy the same attacking space – even in spite of his ostensibly more defensive position – bodes well for his likelihood of producing attacking returns heading into the new season.

The defender also demonstrated an ability to pose a threat on the end of set-pieces, notching Arsenal’s equaliser by rising to divert Granit Xhaka’s cross into the net.

The underlying numbers for Kolašinac were promising too. Despite playing only limited minutes, the defender produced 17 passes in opposition territory (with a 100% success rate), including five in the final third. These compared favourably to those of Alonso (10, 5) and Victor Moses (12, 7).

It should be noted that Hector Bellerin – playing on the right-hand flank of Arsenal’s formation – outshone even Kolašinac in this regard, with 29 passes in the opposing half and 21 in the danger zone, while he created two excellent goalscoring opportunities in the process.

Such a performance demonstrates the attacking potential of the wing-back position within Arsenal’s current set-up and underlines the tantalising prospects of either player as an FPL asset moving forward.

Kolašinac also put in an impressive defensive performance, winning all three of his tackles and racking up five recoveries – traits which would translate well into FPL’s Bonus Point System (BPS).

Alexandre Lacazette

In contrast to Kolašinac’s impressive debut, Lacazette cut a significantly less imposing figure during Sunday’s match-up.

Often isolated in space against Chelsea’s trio of centre backs, Lacazette amassed just 24 touches during his disappointing 66-minute spell – fewer than any other starter. Of these, far too many were found by dropping deep into space ahead of Chelsea’s backline, from which he was quickly smothered by defensive pressure.

Lacazette – Touches
members

The Frenchmen displayed occasional glimpses of his attacking prowess. On two or three occasions, Lacazette found himself in dangerous positions; only for Chelsea’s defensive line to close on him before he had a chance to capitalise.

His brightest moment came in the first-half, when he was able to free himself on the edge of the penalty area and curl an early shot against the post. Yet this effort would prove to be Lacazette’s only goal attempt of the match and he would be replaced shortly after the hour mark by Olivier Giroud (who himself failed to make much of an impression, albeit in limited time).

The usual caveats apply here, of course – this was only a single match, and consequently it is certainly much too early for us to jump to any definitive conclusions about Lacazette’s Fantasy prospects for the coming year. For the record, I am optimistic of his season-long goalscoring potential, as are our Rate My Team projections.

It is similarly important to note that Arsenal were missing the combined creative impetus of Mesut Özil, Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey for this fixture – players who would have both demanded defensive attention and worked to produce more threatening through-balls to the striker.

Nonetheless, even after claiming his first trophy as a member of Arsene Wenger’s squad, this was likely not a match that Lacazette will want to remember.

I really quite like that draft game.

Done two drafts so far just against my son. Picks from Northern clubs vs Sothern clubs and a standard draft game. You can get a couple of really good teams with just two playing.

Next step is a bigger league I think and then call it a day at three teams.

Cheers, that's a great idea. My own kid sometimes sees my FPL team on screen, tries to build his own, but gets frustrated with the limited funds. Playing 1v1 on draft might just be the ticket!

Dunk likes a yellow card which could affect his BPI. Provides a decent attacking threat at set plays.

Suttner provides a more rounded attacking threat and will have a share of set pieces. Not sure he's in line for pens though. That's news to me.

I was on Cedric but not sure if he will start and he has a history of randomly missing games and not delivering on his promise. Switched to Yoshida, then to Stephens on the basis that Saints are a selling club and are more likely to want to develop a young English talent who could be worth big bucks than play a long serving squad player with little scope for development when they sign a new CB. Could be completeley wrong, and will be wildcarding in the international break in any case!

So if trippier is rated out for a week or two, I'm thinking short term defensive targets.

Danilo looks good but it's city and clean sheets could be dodgy
Davies for Spurs but Rose is forever nearly there
Monreal has good fixtures but zero threat, plus Arsenal are slow starters

I'm actually on Matip right now - good stats both defensively and in the air attacking, and Watford and Palace could be two fairly quickly. Both have new managers.

    Anyone feeling brave?

I agree with you. + Spurs clean sheet potential for the first couple of games doesn't look great, Trippier was in more for his attacking potential. I don't think Davies has that same attacking threat

Have scrapped budget defence and feel like this team has bags of potential:

    Foster - Elliot
    Cedric - Daniels - Kolasinac - Mee - Hunemeir
    Pedro - Salah - Alli - Ritchie - Carrol
    Kane - Kaku - Joselu

0.5itb to upgrade Daniels to Trippier once for or grab a surprise bandwagon.

Flexible to be honest. 353 if Joselu starts firing (strong preseason but stoke make me want to hibernate so...). 352 an option with Carrol on set pieces. Wouldn't be too upset to deploy Mee in a 442 for a home game

Not bad at all. I don't like having a 4mil non playing sub, but if you have to go that route, just make sure you pick the 4mil option with the lowest ownership so no values lost as no 4mil option will play.

Fitness permitted, pick Abraham over Joselu to start with. More secure to start with and without a fit Llorente, has better fixtures, and will build value fast if he gets off to a good start.

Defence and bench are weak and it feels like a sub 100m team. Upgrades required in playing mids and defensive roles. Drop firming given you've got Mane already and redistribute funds

Happy with my DF but have 1m ITB to upgrade any of my Front 8, where shall I use it? Not a fan of Spurs first 2 fixtures (will assess after then).

    KDB Salah Willian Zaha Fraser

    Lukaku Jesus Mounie

Mounie, Huddersfield didn't score well last season especially the 2nd half, i'd avoid them if I was you. Either that or save the 1Mil so you don't have to take any hits if you want to jump on some bandwagons.

Upgrade to Andre Gray? Gabbiadinni? Only other 2 I'm considering as a 3rd ST

Southampton got some really nice fixtures think I'd go with gabbi and you could always downgrade to mounie if he isn't producing. I hear good things about mounie but I'm just not sure about Huddersfield.

Think I may upgrade my DF fodder, saves me a Transfer when the game kicks off, all Mounie, Gray, Gabbi would be punts & Mounie takes the least of my budget

I like KDB as a player but I can't for the life of me see why he's any better a pick than Eriksen or Alli...

19 more home fixtures than both those.

He has Jesus plus Aguero to pick out while Eriksen without Rose and Walker will get a touch less possession.

Plays for City. Traditionally fast starters, compared to Spurs who are slow and playing in n unfamiliar ground.

I'm simply leaning on the "Spurs will have a hard time @ Wembley" and the fact that I own Kane. I hate the Word coverage but I think City will score a LOT and I Can't squeeze in Jesus who I prefer, so KDB Looks safe.

Yeah...KDB will score well but i'm just not sure he outscores Alli and Eriksen for less...

      He's overpriced by .5.

I'm going to end up playing conservatively and having him. But if I thought Sterling was more than 75% likely to play I'd much rather have him and the 2.0.

      He's not a better pick.

He's a more expensive similar pick with better early fixtures.

Do you think it is too risky to double up on City and Liverpool attacks and going without Arsenal, Chelsea and ManU coverage?

    Stephens Aké Fosuh Mensah
    KDB Mané Salah Zaha
    Kane Jesus Abraham

Mane (or Salah) since doubling on Spurs attack assets is a bit too risky (given the Manchester dominance plus Spurs' Wembley adventure).

Are people considering going for a 9.0m keeper pairing, so two 4.5m players? Only thinking if Adrian comes and displaces Elliott who seems to be high ownership, then his price could quickly drop.
