Bournemouth are the latest to revert to a three-man backline, just as Arsene Wenger may be about to call time on the system following a first-half runaround at Anfield.

Elsewhere, Antonio Conte gives a vote of confidence to Cesc Fabregas in midfield and is rewarded with a goal, while Frank De Boer’s tactics and formation come under scrutiny as Crystal Palace fail to overcome key absentees.

Here’s part one of Line-up Lessons, assessing the teamsheets and formations from Gameweek 3, with one eye on what’s to come following the international break.

Arsenal

Starting XI: Cech: Holding, Koscielny, Monreal: Oxlade-Chamberlain (Lacazette 62), Xhaka, Ramsey (Coquelin 46), Bellerin: Sanchez (Giroud 62), Welbeck, Ozil. Subs not used: Ospina, Mustafi, Kolasinac, Walcott.

  • What we saw: Arsene Wenger handed a first start of the season to Alexis Sanchez, who joined Mesut Ozil in the two advanced midfield positions in the 3-4-2-1 formation. It was Danny Welbeck who surprisingly got the nod ahead of Alexandre Lacazette in the lone striker role. Laurent Koscielny returned from suspension to join Rob Holding and Nacho Monreal in central defence, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (right) and Hector Bellerin (left) chosen as the wing-backs, as Sead Kolasinac dropped to the bench. But following a disastrous first half, Wenger brought on Francis Coquelin for Aaron Ramsey, with the Welshman reportedly dealing with a calf problem, and switched to a 4-2-3-1, with Nacho Monreal moving to left-back, and Bellerin to right-back. Oxlade-Chamberlain moved forward to the right wing but was replaced shortly after the hour mark. The final half hour saw Welbeck move to the right, with substitute Lacazette on the left and Olivier Giroud as the lone striker.
  • What we learned: The changes in system and personnel demonstrate the current malaise at Arsenal, with the uncertainty hanging over the future of Shkodran Mustafi, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and perhaps Sanchez. The fact the three-man defence is not yielding the success found during the final stages of last season suggests that Wenger may consider a return to a back four following the international break. Both Lacazette and Giroud will push for recalls in attack, with Coquelin a more defensive option in central midfield should the Gunners go back to 4-2-3-1. Kolasinac is another who should come back into contention, particularly if Oxlade-Chamberlain departs.

Current Status: Very Unsettled
Risk Areas: Wing-backs/full-backs, central defenders, central midfield, attacking midfield, lone striker

Bournemouth

Starting XI: Begovic; A Smith, S Cook, Ake, Mings, Daniels; Gosling, Surman, Arter; Defoe (Afobe 73, (Mousset 90)), King. Subs not used: Boruc, Brad Smith, Lewis Cook, Fraser, Ibe.

  • What we saw: Eddie Howe switched to a 3-5-2 formation for the visit of Manchester City to the Vitality Stadium, with Tyrone Mings earning a start in a back three. Dan Gosling joined Andrew Surman and Harry Arter in central midfield, while Jermain Defoe made his first Premier League start alongside Josh King. Benik Afobe was brought on to replace Defoe, but he picked up a knock late on, and made way for Lys Mousset.
  • What we learned: Usually a firm advocate of a four-man defence, Howe joined the growing number of Premier League managers experimenting with a three-man backline. With a trip to Arsenal up next, he could retain that system, which would make personnel changes less likely. Simon Francis may be available following a hamstring injury; he would be an option to replace Mings in central defence, while Lewis Cook could perhaps push for a start in central midfield. Ryan Fraser was the fall guy from the change of formation, with the Scot missing out having started 18 of the last 22 for the Cherries.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Central defenders, central midfield

Brighton & Hove Albion

Starting XI: Ryan; Bruno (Rosenior 46), Dunk, Duffy, Suttner; Knockaert (Izquierdo 80), Stephens, Propper, March; Gross (Murphy 90); Hemed. Subs not used: Maenpaa, Huenemeier, Sidwell, Skalak.

  • What we saw: Chris Hughton handed a first start to Anthony Knockaert, who was stationed on the right of midfield in the usual 4-4-1-1 formation. Glenn Murray missed out with an ankle injury, seeing Tomer Hemed get the nod in attack. But following Miguel Britos’ early dismissal for Watford, that changed to a 4-2-3-1, with Knockaert and Solly March in more advanced wide positions. Jose Izquierdo made his Seagulls debut off the bench, operating on the left wing, seeing March switch over to the opposite flank. Liam Rosenior replaced Bruno at half-time with the suggestion that the club skipper may have been troubled by a back injury – there has been no confirmation from the club, and this may have been a move to add energy to the flank in light of the Britos dismissal.
  • What we learned: Hughton will have been encouraged after picking up a first point of the season, with radical changes in formation appearing unlikely after the break. Izquierdo will push for a start against West Brom on the left wing, putting March’s berth at risk. Brighton are expected to add a striker to their ranks before the transfer window closes, having yet to register a goal in the Premier League.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Left wing, lone striker

Burnley

Starting XI: Heaton; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Ward; Gudmundsson (Wood 57), Cork, Arfield, Defour (Westwood 81), Brady; Vokes (Barnes 57). Subs not used: Bardsley, Long, Taylor, Pope.

  • What we saw: Jeff Hendrick missed the trip to Wembley due to a thigh injury, with Scott Arfield taking his place. The Clarets lined up in more of a 4-2-3-1, with Jack Cork and Steven Defour in the double-pivot. Arfield joined Robbie Brady and Johann Berg Gudmundsson slightly further forward in midfield. That changed to more of a 4-4-1-1 following the introduction of Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood from the bench, with Brady on the right flank, and Arfield on the left.
  • What we learned: After scoring the late equaliser, Wood should push for a start when Burnley host Crystal Palace in Gameweek 4. Sean Dyche could choose to use the New Zealander either in place or alongside Vokes, in a 4-4-2. Hendrick should return to contention in midfield, with Arfield’s berth most at risk.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, forwards

Chelsea

Starting XI: Courtois, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Rudiger, Moses (Christensen 88), Fabregas, Kante, Alonso, Pedro (Bakayoko 75), Willian, Morata (Batshuayi 77). Subs not used: Caballero, Kenedy, Musonda, Tomori.

  • What we saw: Antonio Conte handed a first start of the season to Pedro, who joined Alvaro Morata and Willian in the front three in the Italian’s usual 3-4-3 formation. Cesc Fabregas returned from suspension to join N’Golo Kante in the middle of the park, with Tiemoue Bakayoko dropping to the bench. David Luiz shifted back into defence, seeing Andreas Christensen miss out. Holding a 2-0 lead, Conte switched to a 3-5-1-1 late on after Bakayoko was sent on for Pedro, with Willian operating just behind substitute Michy Batshuayi.
  • What we learned: The use of Luiz in central midfield against Spurs appears to have been designed to nullify the opposition and due to a lack of options. With Fabregas and Bakayoko now battling to partner Kante in central midfield, Luiz will surely remain part of Conte’s back three. Elsewhere, Eden Hazard featured for the U23s last Friday and should be in contention to return against Leicester City following the international break. The Belgian could replace either Willian or Pedro if he’s fit enough to come straight into the starting XI.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, flanks

Crystal Palace

Starting XI: Hennessey, Fosu-Mensah, Dann, Tomkins (Kelly 41), Ward, Milivojevic (Cabaye 58), McArthur, Van Aanholt (Lee Chung-yong 46), Townsend, Puncheon, Benteke. Subs not used: Speroni, Schlupp, Lokilo, Anderson.

  • What we saw: Frank de Boer was without Ruben Loftus-Cheek (groin) for the home encounter against Swansea City, with James McArthur taking the loanee’s place. Andros Townsend played nearest to Christian Benteke in attack in a 3-5-2, with Jason Puncheon pushing forward from the three-man midfield. The Palace boss switched to a four-man defence in the second half, with substitute Martin Kelly at right-back, and Joel Ward shifting across to the left. Lee Chung-yong came on for Patrick van Aanholt at half-time and played on the right of an attacking midfield trio alongside Puncheon and Townsend in a 4-2-3-1. Yohan Cabaye made his first appearance of the season in the second half, replacing Luka Milivojevic in a straight swap.
  • What we learned: De Boer is still discovering the strengths and weaknesses of his Palace squad, and perhaps that a three-man defence is not ideally suited to the players at his disposal. Changes in both system and personnel appear possible for the trip to Burnley after the international break, with De Boer desperate to have both Loftus-Cheek and Wilfried Zaha available. Tomkins was forced off with a knock on the weekend, but Jairo Riedewald should have a good chance of recovering to start at Turf Moor. Cabaye provides a different option in midfield, while Van Aanholt’s start looks far from assured. Jeffrey Schlupp is another who may come into contention, then. De Boer is reportedly in the market for a new goalkeeper, so Wayne Hennessey’s place may also come under threat.

Current Status: Very Unsettled
Risk Areas: Goalkeeper, wing-backs/full-backs, central defenders, central midfield, attacking midfield

Everton

Starting XI: Pickford, Keane, Williams, Jagielka (Lennon 83), Holgate, Davies (Besic 46), Gueye, Baines, Rooney, Sigurdsson, Sandro (Calvert-Lewin 62). Subs not used: Martina, Stekelenburg, Lookman, Kenny.

  • What we saw: Ronald Koeman rolled out a 3-4-2-1 formation at Stamford Bridge, with Gylfi Sigurdsson handed his first Premier League start next to Wayne Rooney in the advanced midfield positions. Sandro was available again following a heel problem and replaced Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the lone striker. Tom Davies and Idrissa Gueye formed the central midfield partnership in the absence of the suspended Morgan Schneiderlin, with Mason Holgate again preferred at right wing-back. Koeman switched to four at the back late on, introducing Aaron Lennon for Phil Jagielka, with the substitute joining Sigurdsson and Rooney in the attacking midfield spots in a 4-2-3-1.
  • What we learned: Koeman appears to favour a three-man defence – particularly away from home – and with Spurs up next, that could continue. Davy Klaassen should be available for that clash having missed out yesterday due to a foot injury, and will provide another midfield option, along with Schneiderlin, who will return from his ban. Calvert-Lewin has impressed and will surely challenge Sandro for his starting role following the international break. The Toffees may yet make further moves in the transfer market in that position, however.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, attacking midfield, lone striker

Huddersfield Town

Starting XI: Lossl: Smith, Schindler, Zanka, Lowe: Billing (Williams 61), Van La Parra (Palmer 56): Kachunga (Quaner 88), Mooy, Ince: Mounie. Subs not used: Coleman, Malone, Lolley, Hefele.

  • What we saw: David Wagner named the same side that beat Newcastle United 1-0 for the home meeting against Southampton, sticking with his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation. Kasey Palmer entered the fray for Rajiv van La Parra, who picked up a knock, while Colin Quaner again appeared off the bench.
  • What we learned: The Terriers’ starting XI has a settled look to it, and the two-week break should allow time for Van La Parra to regain full fitness. Danny Williams replaced Philip Billing in central midfield on the hour mark, and could potentially push for a start for the Gameweek 4 trip to West Ham United.

Current Status: Very Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, left wing

Leicester City

Starting XI: Schmeichel; Simpson, Maguire, Morgan, Fuchs; Mahrez, Ndidi, James, Albrighton (King 60); Vardy (Slimani 76), Okazaki (Gray 60). Subs not used: Hamer, Chilwell, Iheanacho, Amartey.

  • What we saw: Craig Shakespeare once again rolled out an unchanged starting XI for the trip to Old Trafford, although Kelechi Iheanacho was fit enough to be named on the bench. The Foxes lined up in their usual 4-4-1-1 formation, which changed to more of a 4-5-1 after the introduction of Andy King, Demarai Gray and Islam Slimani. Riyad Mahrez was allowed to drift inside more during the final half hour, though, with King playing wider on the right.
  • What we learned: Shakespeare looks set to continue with the 4-4-1-1, although he’ll be hoping Iheanacho can shake off a nagging toe problem to push for a start in attack. Providing Danny Drinkwater (thigh) is fully fit after the international break, and remains at the club, he should come into contention to replace Matty James in central midfield. Robert Huth (ankle) should also be close to a return when the Foxes host the Blues in Gameweek 4 with Wes Morgan’s starting role then under threat. Demarai Gray continues to offer a more attacking alternative to Marc Albrighton on the left flank.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, support striker

Liverpool

Starting XI: Karius: Gomez, Matip, Lovren, Moreno: Wijnaldum, Henderson, Emre Can (Grujic 83): Mane (Sturridge 74), Firmino (Milner 80), Salah. Subs not used: Ward, Alexander-Arnold, Klavan, Solanke.

  • What we saw: Reds boss Jurgen Klopp kept faith in his favoured 4-3-3 formation, but did make a few personnel changes. Simon Mignolet was dropped in goal, with the official line stating that he was “rested”. Loris Karius took his place with Danny Ward promoted to the bench. Alberto Moreno was preferred at left-back, with Joe Gomez at right-back. Trent Alexander-Arnold was named among the substitutes despite suffering from a dead leg last week. Klopp shored up the midfield late on with his side 4-0 up, bringing on James Milner for Roberto Firmino, leaving just Mohamed Salah and fellow substitute Daniel Sturridge in attack.
  • What we learned: While Karius was far from convincing, he could feasibly replace Mignolet as the first choice stopper. Rotation at right-back looks set to continue, while on the opposite flank, Andrew Robertson is a viable alternative to Alberto Moreno. The Scot missed out on Sunday following the birth of his child. With Philippe Coutinho perhaps remaining at the club, he will be a threat to the starts of either Georginio Wijnaldum or Emre Can once fit – perhaps even after the international break.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Goalkeeper, full-backs, central midfield

Part two of Line-up Lessons, detailing the remaining ten teams, will follow tomorrow.

  1. Kane's lack of confidence

This is a bit late to the party, but I've just seen the highlights from Sunday and Kane's performance was quite concerning for his fantasy potential.

From a pure eye test, although he had a lot of shots, none of the chances were particularly clear cut, and it seemed to me that he was rushing his shots or not quite having the composure and self confidence from a man in form. He never seemed to have that extra half second that he usually would in the box. Simply put, he looked like a player who is a bit rusty at the start of the season.

I would imagine that once he gets one his confidence will come back and he will start to bang them in, but I think we can be fairly relaxed not having him in our teams and wait for his first haul before bringing him in.

There's also the Wembley factor to consider - at the end of the day it's not a familiar stadium for them so will take some time to feel like home and become the fortress of the Lane. They were peculiarly good at home last year so it's unrealistic to expect them to be as good in the new stadium.

(Disclaimer - I haven't had Kane all season.)

never use highlights to determining a player's form I learned that last year's try to watch the game to see all the involvements...imo... I watched the game...and in my eyes he looked quit dangerous....and I am not a Kane owner..

He was getting into dangerous positions - I just feel that he didn't quite have the confidence to simply bury the chances. Quite a few seemed a bit half hearted.

If he's in form, he probably would have got a hat trick that game from the same chances.

I agree with you... Kane did look dangerous. But would you persist with a MID in your team who blanked for 3 consecutive games and has say 9 or 10m value? IMO, not many would - case in point KDB. I think its better to rely on present value rather than historical glory. Potential is very important but not at the cost of compromising your entire squad.

I'm by no means calling myself an expert at FPL... I've been playing FPL for quite some years now as a fun activity but this is the first season I'm doing it seriously. So I may be wrong here.

        Happy to know your thoughts.

No you definitely wouldn't - and KDB went for me this week for that reason (admittedly Kane's stats are much better but still).

At the end of the day the transfers do you give you flexibility to move players around, so you don't need to keep anyone for the whole season and can move them in and out when they're not in form.

Absolutely, I too had KDB but after the first match I realized he was just too deep. And if that's his position in GW1, it wasn't going to improve. Glad I made that change early on. Similarly, Willian. TBH, very good performances in the three GWs but his positioning didn't give me the confidence that we will get a lot of assists or goals. He is playing in a role that is essentially assisting the assister!

Yeah I've got Willian too and he looked really good this weekend but as you say not directly involved in too much right by the goal. Hard to see alternatives in that price range though.

Agreed. We've seen every year with Kane that when he gets going he's deadly, but for whatever reason he needs that time to get fully up to speed at the start of the season.

      i agree.
i didnt get kane in because he never starts well
spurs are a 'team' ie greater than the sum of their parts and they need time to get going.
the wembley effect is a thing. moving from the smallest pitch to the biggest affects how they play. atmosphere is also very different in a small stadium
i think they over performed a bit last year.
lost walker who was key to the attack

that saying im watching very closely, if/when they start flowing hes essential.

Yeah I agree with all of these points. I think most on here were overly keen to ignore the moving stadiums / Wembley factor. At the end of the day, moving from your fortress stadium to any new stadium is going to take a while to adjust and you certainly lose that familiarity you had. They're a good team and I'm sure will do well, but they were never going to get 17 home wins again in a different stadium.

Yeah - I'm not saying he wasn't getting the chances. But a fully confident Kane scores both of those chances. The shot for the 1-on-1 in particular seemed to lack belief to me.

What about the 2 times he's hit the post, if he had belief they go in?
It's sample size, he'll likely score well in his next 3

Again I think with a bit more sharpness he scores them. Could be confidence/belief, could be rustiness/lack of sharpness, but whatever it is there's certainly something in the way.

Also remember that he's only had 3 big chances out of 24 total shots so the quality of his shots/chances is not as high as you would expect.

From watching the games I'd say he had 3 big chances vs burnley alone.
I'm not trying to be blindly supporting Kane, but I just don't agree with his performances being concerning for fantasy potential. The only thing concerning is 1, 1, 2

I watched all three Spurs games completely.

IMO, he's been good, but not great. Far from what a 12.5 should look like, that's for sure. Had some good shots, but lost the ball very often against Burnley.

The thing is, Burnley were solid. There were no gaps for Spurs to really exploit.

I think Wembley might be a factor as well. Spurs were scoring goals for fun in the second half of last season. If they find that form again, Kane would be a great pick. I think it could start from GW5, but for now, with Everton away next, I'm staying clear.

          Have Luka

Jesus is part of Man City attack, so not for me at this stage.

          Morata's fixtures 😮

Firmino is an interesting case. Since I want a captaincy option for Kane's replacement, Firmino just doesnt feel right but I'm trying to get him as my 3rd forward

*Firmino's part probably doesnt make sense*

it may be 'august' but totally agree with the eye test.
strikers know where the goal is based on all kind of cues. i think its wembley. its kind of like he didnt recalibrate for a new pitch. most shots looked wide of the mark. i've gambled against kane this season. i think the last two games flattered his performance last season. Kane had a great season with a strong squad behind him. but this is a weaker team, no rose or walker, sorry but trippier is ok, davies is meh. lukaku now has a better team behind him than last season. im punting on lukaku morata firmino this season

Yeah it's definitely true that Spurs are weaker this year, especially in comparison to other teams who have strengthened considerably.

Everyone here is saying Kane will definitely win the golden boot but at the end of the day Lukaku would have won it at a much worse team had Kane not had those 2 ridiculous games at the end - he was only 4 behind.

last year lukaku didnt have pens. hopefully mourinho keeps the faith after the miss. i thought they looked good only after newcastle were down to 10 men. against chelsea an o.g. helped the cause. against burnley they looked knackered by 80 mins, hence the equaliser. wembley is 400sqm larger than previous pitch. you cant press like last season without some consequences.

The standard pitch size is 105 metres by 68, but some clubs are granted an exemption if their stadium is too small to accommodate the standard size.

Last season, Stoke (the smallest), Spurs, Crystal Palace, Everton, Leicester, Burnley, Liverpool, Chelsea and Southampton were all allowed to have smaller pitches, whilst two clubs (Hull and Middlesbrough) had larger than standard pitches.

And Lukaku had no penalties either.

Yeah, I was very surprised at how the Scoutcast team overhyped him last week. He was just average against Chelsea. Saying things like 'No one thinks he's not going to win the Golden Boot' this early was absurd.

I've never listened but not surprised jonty and Co would be hyperbolic. Mark knows his shit and has some insight into the game of football.

Actually, it was Mark and Luke that were hyperbolic. Jonty wasn't. And Andy actually argued that the Golden Boot wasn't that straightforward and that Lukaku could challenge for it as well.

Everyone seems to be forgetting Ibra last year too who had a similar patch of crazy stats but not goals. I kept him throughout most of that and it really hurt me. It's very possible for players to go through phases of shooting all the time but nothing quite falling there way. Would much rather take a Lukaku goal from his shin than 10 shots from Kane but no goals.

indeed for 12.5, i'm expecting henry or ronaldo or rvp or suarez or aguro(pre pep) kind of returns. At 12.5m you have to deliver against newc and burnley

Granville called out the "groupthink" on Twitter and think he got it spot on. Easy to get a confirmation bias when you want something to be true (Kane will get points) and therefore emphasis certain things (e.g. number of shots) to justify keeping him rather than admitting he hasn't turned shots into points, he looks rusty, and he actually hasn't had many big chances but lots of scuffed and blocked shots.

I haven't owned him yet but feel like I've dodged a bullet. I'm on wildcard and getting him in now.

If your a Kane owner and have fallen behind due to others owning Morata or/and Firmino.

You should keep Kane at this point as he is your differential and will catch up when he starts banging them in. It makes little sense to get rid now. With Liverpool playing city, having an DLC midfielder is enough for next GW.

I have no problem sticking with Alli until Kane eventually finds his scoring boots. There are good reasons Kane is struggling to find the net, lack of sharpness, Wembley factor, and at 12.5m you need to reassess, certainly in the short term. Also can you justify giving him the armband ahead of Lukaku? If not, even more of a reason to bail out.

hes not feeling the home grass like at whl, he needs more time.
good forward without a shred of doubt, but he needs time to adjust. he will be banging in the goals very soon - no doubt.

To me he looked the usual. The chances were not all 100%, some were 99%, some were 80%, but Kane's got skill to convert any of those. It just didn't happen yet.

Everyone's rusty - Aguero, Lukaku, even Morata...

If I was a Spurs fan and had no FPL concerns, I'd think everything is fine with Harry.

For all this talk about an imminent haul incoming because of his stats, i think Kane obviously gets the benefit of the doubt because of his history. if Lukaku had blanked 3 games in a row i doubt anyone would have sang the same tune.

Not liking all these wildcard teams, people just seem to be swapping to last weeks points.

Not a good strategy imo as the season is still very unsettled, and the real trends are yet to emerge

quick question, if you are on WC, you can keep changing lineup till deadline ?
In short, you are actually buying players that will rise to catch the double earners these 2 weeks and then rebuild your team ?

Sold Salah for Pogba, captained Lukaku and benched Elliot and Mbemba.

Got away with Mbemba though when Alexander-Arnold stayed on the bench. Him, Cedric and Jesus were the only successes.

It's been a very poor start to the season.

Meh with the Meh with me.

        Salah brought me above average.

Long term pleased I dumped KDB at 10 and picked up Eriksen for 9.5 - tho that will hopefully be a smooth for another week regarding the Dane.

        Kane captain.

Getting Stones 1 pt from his cameo over first sub Ake's 0 just about sums up the low level victories of this week. 🙂

Rough - Lukaku's penalty miss. Last minute captain switch from Kane to Lukaku cost me 2 points.
Rough - Fabregas scored minus one for my team in GW1. Then I sold him, so I didn't get his 11 points in GW3.
Meh - same GW score as Jonty.
Smooth - still 3 points ahead of Jonty - if I can maintain that margin then I could be back in the top 10k by the end of the season.

Still best ever start (in 10th season now) 66k.

rough: Lukaku (c) - worst captaincy score since a Giroud minus points score (2 years ago?). Bavies losing 7 pts in last minute.

Pretty satisfied with getting assists or clean sheets on all defenders, and all midfielders bar Eriksen.

Rough would have to be Daniels and Elliott benched, but I never would have done it otherwise so can't be too mad. Also, nothing from either Mounie, Lukaku or Kane(c) is bothering me, but what can you do...

          - De Bruyne & King to Mhki and Chicarito for a hit was a miserable failure this week, and I'm already weighing up if West Ham are actually going to be worth it while Bilic remains.
          - Captain Lukaku

          Smooth:
          - Kept faith with Jesus (ha) and Alli, two unpopular picks here.

          Rough:
Jesus to Chicharito for -4. After the Everton game, I thought Pep would start Sterling and go four at the back, with Jesus missing out, given that he was subbed off instead of Aguero at half time in GW2. Unfortunately, that was only half right!

          Smooth:
The other half of my hit eased the blow, which was Fraser to Mkhitaryan. Apart from that, three out of four clean sheets from my keeper and defence for the third consecutive week was nice, as was Salah's haul.

          Mine was a real roller-coaster.

          Rough: Stones dropped
Smooth: Goal from first sub, Daniels
Rough: The inevitable one minute, one point cameo from Stones when City scored late, keeping 7 points on my bench.
Smooth: The inexplicable benching of Kolasinac and his failure to play even a minute put Daniels back in my starting XI!

So my defence is a mess of non-starters and no-hopers who can't keep a clean sheet even if they do play, but at least I got the points from Daniels' goal!

Rough: Kane and Chicharito in for Firmino and Jesus in a move that cost me a net 20 points.. 29 if captain would have been Jesus. The Burnley goal really stung as well...

Smooth: KdB out for Salah gained me 9 points. Not much else really.

36 point net score could have been 60 points but still would have done the same thing given the fixtures and what fell before. Hopefully the team should make up some ground in the coming weeks.

          Bit of both this week!

Played my wildcard which I'm pretty happy with but went in a bit strong on Watford I feel who I think are going to be this season's surprise team to over perform.

Unfortunately one of those 3 players was Britos and his sending off meant Richarlison blanked but Gomes still got a clean sheet.

          Other than that:

Rough - Ben Davies, Pogba, Eriksen, Lukaku, Kane.
          Smooth - Alonso, Jones, Firmino.

4 clean sheets, an assist and 5 bonus thanks to Cedric, Stephens, Jones & Naughton

          The Bad

Rough - Salah out Pogba in, lost 8 points, and my second FT was KDB to Eriksen. Friday night, before the price drop, to save the value, I did Ritchie to Antonio for a hit, another 8 points lost.

Although I would never played them before any of the picked 11, those benched Daniels' and Eliot's points are painful.

Besides from the three clean sheets at the back, my entire team blanked.

Had a good week, back-back 60 pointers to get me up to 430k.

Rough; Kane(c) for the third time.

Smooth; Bertrand, Bailly, kept faith in Jesus, Firmino still doing it for me after being so reliable last year, spread of 3 pointers through midfield plus Mkhi assist, Suttner subbing in for Kolasanic jammy 7 points.

          Here's one for you all,

one of my "so-called friends" thought it would be hilarious to mess with my team.

I was horrified to find, when opening up my account to check my side after the deadline, that someone had made a transfer on my behalf at 2.09 am In the morning,...almost cerrtainly due to intoxication following a night in the pub.

They had taken out my intended captain, Harry Kane, and inserted Jesus.

In a fit of rage I sent messages to both the game information site, demanding it be corrected, and to a list of suspected "friends" accusing them of, well, hacking me and my lovely little FF team.

Jesus thankfully delivered 9 points to Harry Kane's 2.

          .....SMOOTH

(And Martin, don't think I don't know it was you because I do, and I will have my revenge!)

Check my transfer history! Martin, I can't thank you enough....

Rough: Lukaku(c), Foster & Ben Davies failing to get CS
Smooth: Salah and Jesus and another assist for Mkhitaryan. Did KDB->Eriksen which got me an extra point. 50 points and another green arrow

Brittos got me -2 with Erikson and Pogba doign nothing.

Rough: Sold Jesus for Chicharito due to concerns over Jesus starting. Lukaku (C).

Smooth: 4/4 clean sheets (actually 8/8 if you include the mids), Fabianski and Mbemba the most pleasing ones. Also got good points from Firmino, for 56 points and a big green arrow.

Without the transfer it would be 64, but I can't complain.

Rough: owning both Tottenham and WBA defenders. Both conceding late, and having Newcastle and Southampton defenders on the bench.

          Lukaku missing a penalty.

          Captain Kane blanking again.

Having said that, they’re pretty common experiences this week.

Smooth: J-Rod finally off the mark.

I captained Kane, but at least he outscored other two popular captain choices: Aguero and Lukaku.

Alonso and Jones keeping it clean again.

All rough for me, got spooked by the early sub for Jesus in GW2 and the bench start for Salah plus had Walker who got a ban so played the wildcard for GW3.

Out went Salah (11pts), Jesus (9pts), Firmino (12pts), double Saints defence (13pts), benched Mbemba (9pts and Elliot (7pts) in came Antonio (2pts), Richarlison (3pts), double baggies defence (4pts), Kane captain etc etc.

Upshot is pre wildcard team would have got 76pts, post wildcard team scored 31pts and I feel an idiot.

Hi Jonty. Can someone please explain what is going on with pricing. Kane is now 300K TXOs and no price drop. Jesus drops 80k in GW2 n drops 0.1k. Less volatile than last year but Price rises seem swifter than falls. Doesn't make sense and spoils the game for me! I play as a tfair challenge to ability n experience with the random being football results. I don't enjoy an apparent bias and randomness in pricing which ultimately affects my selections. Why can't this be set to a price:ownership ratio? Even if logarithmic?

Sorry if this is posted on wrong area. Been part of community for 2 years played 4 seasons but still new to posting.

To add further. It affects my selections to the point that I have WC now to gain £ and assure assets before going up. It's my biggest WC factor and I suspect a high factor for Mark and others WC decision too!

id say its easy to say that if you start well and ive been on both sides of that. if you have 5-6 that you just want shot of quickly and you can catch some rises why not?

I can see 2 that he may want to get rid of immediately.. KDB and Dann..

Coutinho might stay if Lemar can't be pushed through, but I doubt we'd be negotiating if we believed a deal couldn't be struck. I think Klopp just wants Coutinho gone now.

Can't blame him if so. Why sign a 5 year contract and then carry on like a little biatch when the club doesn't sanction your move. Beautiful player but shit way to carry on.

The funny thing is is that after all the hard work he's done over the last few seasons he'll just be doing the exact same thing at Barca, they won't be winning anything for a while, if at all.

One thing I like about Ferguson is that he built a loyal set of players for himself. Like Scholes, Giggs etc. It's better to have players like those than a world class one who'll want to leave the club at every available opportunity.

hard to fathom just how strange The Ox's inclusion against Liverpool was considering his move to Chelsea the very next day.For me it points to some massive mental breakdown with Wenger, more than anything else Ive seen from him. Just what he expected from a player who wouldn't sign a contract and was 99 percent going to leave in the window, only he knows. Was it 'we will tonk liverpool and you will see this is the only club for you'? or did he want to humiliate him? The latter seems unlikely but thats what materialised.

"Chelsea have been led to believe Oxlade-Chamberlain’s preference is to remain in the capital". I guess it depends who/what led them to believe that. But they will for sure have been in communication with his agent one imagines, that's how things work nowadays isn't it?

Other sources have him as having his Chelsea medical today. So we'll probably know soon enough.

          Chelsea Transfers 2017

          OUT: Oscar £60m, Aké £20m, Matic £40m, Cuadrado £20m, Begovic £10m, Traoré £10m, Chalobah £7m, Atsu £6m, prospective Costa £30m, loan fees estimated £7m = TOTAL £210m

          IN: Morata £60m, Bakayoko £35m, Rüdiger £30m, prospective Oxlade-C £35m, prospective Drinkwater £30m = TOTAL £190m

Chelsea can sign those two and still have a net profit on transfers of £20m this calendar year. Last summer's net spend was around £60m. These are small amounts in the current financial context. Those would be 2 good signings for Chelsea to replace players they have allowed to leave (the most disappointing and surprising of which, for me, was Chalobah).

Ruth, just a quick one on Chelsea if you don’t mind?

I have Willian. When Hazard returns is Willian no longer a decent FPL pick? Or will he retain starts? I can get him out for Antonio or Silva (with a bit)

What do you think? Cheers 🙂

Last season Willian started as 1st choice over Pedro. He then got injured, Pedro came in and did very well and after that Pedro was preferred.

There is no reason why the same couldn't happen in reverse this season. Willian is an exceptional player and has arguably been Chelsea's best attacker so far.

Beyond that I can't help you because I can't read Conte's mind. But with CL starting and 7 games to play in September there will likely be some rotation anyway. That probably applies to all clubs that have European competition to deal with.

Hi Ruth, always enjoy you thoughts and comments.

What do you think on Kolasanic, I was all set to ship out and now with Ox going I don't know whether to give him a few more weeks. The fixtures are good but Wenger and the whole team are the problem!

I don't know. Arsenal seem to be in meltdown. But in terms of fixtures the prospects are great on paper, under normal circumstances you'd have to say that 4 of their next 5 games are good CS prospects. And you'd have to imagine that Kolasinac will be playing.

The trouble is, these aren't normal circumstances. So I reckon your guess is as good as mine. Fortunately I have no Arsenal players and don't have the problem.

0.1 more or less on the most expensive player of the game is not the same as 0.1 to a player half the price when you're talking about waiting for price drops.

If you're really rubbing your hands together at the thought of saving 0.1 on a 12.5m player then LOL.

The player or their price doesn’t matter. 0.1 is 0.1 whichever way you look at it. The 0.1 isn’t worth more or less because of Kanes price. The same value still gets added to your TV. I think that’s their point

It's very tempting to drop Lacazette for Morata as their prices rocket in opposite directions. Lacazette has nice fixtures but does that even mean anything for Arsenal? They can't be this bad, right?

Yep. If FFF is anywhere near accurate then at his current projected rate of sales he's unlikely to drop for another two or three days at least. But the trading volume will collapse in the next day or two so it could take even longer than that. And patterns can shift too during the break between deadlines.

KDB was playing deep. Laccazette is their big summer striker singing. Can see him defo punishing sellers

Thoughts on my team? Already used my FT to trade KDB to Eriksen, but still need to get rid of Willian, PvA and now maybe Ramsey. Is it worth it to use my WC? Or should I just rotate between the bench for now

        Foster (Elliot)

Bertrand - Jones - PvA (Suttner, Rosenior)

Eriksen - Willian - Ramsey - Richarlison (Caroll)

        Kane - Kaku - Firmino

If you'd have asked this before Morata and Mkhi rise, I'd have agreed on a WC.

Bavies will eventually make way for Rose. Aurier will be 6.0-6.5,so need Trippier to be nailed at 5.4

Haven't got any real pressing concerns except maybe Kane.

Got 1FT, but is Kane > Firmino worth it? Kane may drop 0.2 this week and Firmino is rising.

Does it matter if Kane drops? Will you sell him with the fixtures coming up? I think not, as soon as he starts firing, and he will, he will be bought by every man and his dog...

Agreed. Kane almost a differential at this point. If the first game he scores in he gets 3 that will be very interesting ...
