Sunday did its best to provide incident and excitement, although it was always going to be difficult to follow on from yesterday’s spoils. An unexpected Manolo Gabbiadini brace stole the show, while assists for budget midfielders provided the rest of the Fantasy fare, as defences buckled in both matches.

Gross the provider once again

Brighton has now scored six goals this season, with Pascal Gross involved in five of them.

The German claimed his third assist of the season with his interception that lead to Anthony Knockaert‘s sweetly struck opener.

Gross took an ownership 14.1% into Gameweek 8, having been signed by over 109,000 new managers, although another 68,000 saw fit to move him out. They may be regretting that decision this evening after another steady six-point return from the budget midfielder.

It was Knockaert who went into the campaign considered our most likely attacking option in the Seagulls ranks. But the Frenchman has been on the periphery until today. He fired a first goal of the season on his recall to Chris Hughton’s starting XI following his benching at Arsenal.

Both midfielders can build on Sunday’s points over a continued run of favourable fixtures over the next four Gameweeks. Hughton’s men face visits to West Ham and Swansea, while Southampton and Stoke are the next visitors to the Amex Stadium.

However, that run is more likely to promote interest in the Brighton defence and, intriguingly, we may have a new budget option available to us.

Shane Duffy was forced off with what looked like a thigh problem to be replaced by Uwe Huenemeier, who, at 3.9, may now be called into action. The German is already owned by 6.2% of managers as a bench warming budget option but could now enter more squads should Duffy face a spell on the sidelines.

Gabbiadini delivers as Forster falters

Manolo Gabbiadini scored his first goals since Gameweek 2 with a brace against Newcastle United to provide a rare double-digit return.

The Italian first pegged back the visitors with a fine solo effort before converting a spot-kick after Shane Long was felled.

Dusan Tadic was on the pitch at the time of the award, indicating that Gabbiadini has now assumed penalty duties. Tadic had previously taken and scored a spot-kick ahead of the striker against West Ham in Gameweek 2.

Gabbiadini was recalled to the Saints starting line-up today having been reduced to cameo roles since his last start in Gameweek 4. He had suffered a loss of 190,000 owners over that spell and went into today’s game as part of just 95,000 squads.

The 12-points appear unlikely to spark a renaissance, although Gabbiadini’s confidence levels will be boosted ahead of West Brom’s visit in Gameweek 9. Another return against the Baggies could see some begin to reconsider the striker, although his previous inconsistency, coupled with the availability of Swansea City’s Tammy Abraham, will likely temper interest.

Fraser Forster‘s uncertain display helped ensure that Southampton had to settle for a point.

The keeper was slow to react to Isaac Hayden’s first-half strike, while he also lets Ayoze Perez’s shot rebound back to the striker for the eventual winner.

Forster is part of 9.0% of squads and went into Gameweek 8 having produced nine points via a penalty save at Stoke City last time out. That haul had earned him 56,000 new owners before Saturday’s deadline, second only to Newcastle’s Rob Elliot who picked up 70,000 managers. Both keepers produced just a single point to reward their recent investors.

Elsewhere for Newcastle, Christian Atsu recovered from the knock that kept him from international duty and duly delivered an assist for his 4.2% ownership. The Ghanian’s initial drive was blocked before rebounding to Hayden to convert the Magpies’ opener.

Like Atsu, Matt Ritchie also figured having recovered from the injury that kept him out of Scotland’s squad over the break. However, his role on set-pieces remains reduced by Jonjo Shelvey’s presence. Ritchie took 13 of 15 corners with Shelvey out of favour but shared them four apiece today.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I guess it depends on formation. If 3 at the back, Jones is mainly the source of good autosubs points. If 4 at the back, Jones/Carroll/Atsu helps out. Without looking, I'll say 3 on average.

'No muscle mass' it says and there's photos. You said 'all' the muscles in his 'calves' are gone.
That happens with serious injuries, I snapped my achilles and lost the mass in one calf but you need to build it up again.
The problem seems to lie in his ankle I believed.

The fall out from it very much suggests everyone was surprised.. that surprises me.. call it what you want but Jose first instinct will be to stop the opposition away from home in the biggest games.. if you have the a manager who can drill a defence as effectively as Jose and the worlds best goalkeeper it's a viable tactic.. Old Trafford will be a different story if you remember last season it was you lot that were very deep in that second half as we pushed on.. you carried more of a threat on the counter that's all

Well with the way Pep is approaching it your old gaffer might regret being such a coward..

There's a difference between pragmatism and being cowardly. Fergie for example would come to Anfield and be pragmatic and on a few occasions left with 3 points. I totally understand pragmatism in a big away game. Yesterday was cowardly mate and you know it too. Burnley and Sean Dyche showed more ambition at Anfield a few weeks ago 🙂

            1. KingNidge
              • 10 Years
              8 years, 2 months ago

Fergie left plenty of times with none and Liverpool team and fans full of confidence too..

Klopp has one win in 8 now and lost his last 5 cup finals on top of that perhaps there should be more scope for pragmatism and even cowardliness at times

Since Jose and Pep took control in Manchester it's 2-0 Mourinho in trophies so i'm certain he regrets nothing and his methods are well proven..

We'll see what the story is come May berbs

I think why people were surprised is the fact that United had no attacking ambition whatsoever and given their start to the season people expected a but a bit more. Liverpool are not a good team and if Jose is going to treat teams in the top 10 like this I will be a very happy bunny. He did the same against Southampton and manged to rob a very fortunate 1-0 victory in a game he deserved to get nothing from.

No attacking ambition just simply isn't true though Lukaku has had arguably the best chance in the game and we got forward plenty in the first half.. last 20 minutes or so it was sit back and take the point no problem.. i know you would have loved nothing more than United to go there open up and lose and if we had of there would have been zero mention of attacking ambition it would have been lol at Jose lol at United usual shite but Jose isn't Arsene Wenger.. that's why they lost 4-0..

I am baffled by why Pep wants Alexis. Alexis is an individualist and loses the ball more than Pep would care for. Maybe he planned to replace Kun with Alexis.

Thankfully they didn't so many options killed in one go, Silva wouldn't be getting assists as Sanchez would be dropping deep to take the ball off of him. Aguero wouldn't be scoring as Sanchez would be shooting instead of playing the through ball to him. Sterling & Sane would be benched. Thankfully it didn't happen.

This is true. The beauty of City's attack right now is that they are all looking to pass to set up the easiest tap in. Alexis would have no part of that. They are probably better off without him IMO.

Did you see the replay of City's second goal? That pass by KDB where he fakes like he is going to shoot and then sends 5 Stoke defenders the wrong way with the pass into Sane is probably the best though pass move I've ever seen. Utterly unreal.... Ever seen in my life both watching and playing football by the way.

Him and City are absolutely joyous to watch, sadly I've been missing a lot of their matches because I always watch my captain when possible. Caught the Palace match and it was a treat, KDB and Silva are second only to Joe Allen in terms of being excellent technicians 😉 . But seriously though, those 2 are on another level this season

Coutinho i think has something like 10 goals in his last 15 PL appearances and a record close to 1 in 2 since Klopp took over.. while Salah is operating further forward a lot of the time Coutinho can score goals and earn points in a lot more different ways and for me makes him my preference.. both quality options there is no clear winner here is my point

DeB, Silva, Fernandinho, Aguero and/or Jesus all probably ahead of Sterling, which means he is fighting for one of 2 places with Aguero/Jesus, Sane, Gun, B Silva, Yaya etc

City have Burnley Wolves and WBA sandwiched between Napoli twice in the CL and Pep is very likely to spread the minutes around than flog the same players

My big Kane theory: Within a very small sample size he's been unlucky. He's still getting chances, so any theory about their style of play doesn't hold up. It'll even out in time.

Unlucky is a pointless term. If we go down that route all other strikers have been unlucky too. Lukaku, Kun should have scored a lot more. Morata should have had at least 5 vs Stoke.

I don't think it's pointless. A striker who is consistently getting chances is better to have than one with the same points who is getting none. Particularly one with a long proven track record of being a good finisher.

I'm saying it's likely because the panel is designed to ban people that dive and he dived. It's not rocket science

The fact that there are so many mixed opinions on the incident indicates it’s not clear cut and I dont feel he will receive a ban.

Probably not then. I saw the incident and assumed everyone would be of the same opinion. I think everyone on the panel has to agree it's ban worthy before it can be imposed so he'll get away with it I guess. On my watchlist so not complaining.

The FA will on Monday investigate whether Watford's Richarlison dived to get the penalty that helped his side win over Arsenal.

The Brazilian fell in the box after minimal contact from Hector Bellerin.

FA bosses will look into the incident under new laws allowing retrospective punishment for divers.

Richarlison could escape an FA charge if footage shows there was contact with Bellerin.

If he is found guilty, he will become the first Premier League player to be punished under the new laws.

      GRAHAM POLL'S VERDICT

Richarlison should be the first player banned for 'Successful deception of a match official' after diving to win a penalty. Referee Neil Swarbrick was fooled by the Brazilian's dive.

However, with the three-strong review panel having to agree unanimously, he could escape the two-match ban an FA charge attracts.

Danny Murphy is on the review panel I think and on MOTD he thought it was fair enough.

If Sanchez won a penalty like that it wouldn't even be a talking point.

I'd be surprised if he saw punishment tbh i have seen much more blatant examples of diving/cheating over the years.. not saying what he did was right but for me the key is minimal contact which means there was contact.. whether he initiated that or not.. he will get away with it imo

What is City's current best 11 of all fit players including Aguero?

I'm thinking Sterling could be rotated every now and then. Sane, to me looks an assured starter on the left flank. Thoughts?

Kane, Kaku and vardyers, given Kaku is a flat track bully and should do well in the Hudds fixture

        1. Do you plan to transfer in Kun for Kaku gw10?
        2. If yes will you be buying Kaku back gw12 assuming both him and Kun are fit?

Azpi could play with rudiger staying in back 3. I guess CL lineup and then Conte's comments will give an idea.

Bigger issue for me is that injury timelines are all over the place this season.

I've been making transfers like Harry Redknapp this season so isn't viable for me but for someone with 2 frees and a settled side could be very viable when you put it like that.

36 points from my wild monkey - heap of bollox.

Ended up getting in Batshite for Jesus to allow myself some milf Silva. At least I don't have to worry about Kun/Peprot.

The good thing was I kept Eriksen and retained The Chopper who looks primed for big points.

Yeah. Your lot are just like my lot. Nobody can SEE the wood, for the trees. In our case we deceive ourselves with Arnautovic and Chicharito. Your lot are hating on Özil. Both our sets of fans need to relearn the art of supporting.

Your dressing room is in a state of flux, but you have some serious quality emerging. The boy Lacazette needs to get with the pace a bit more, but will be a very serious player indeed, imho.

No ARS. Have Coutinho like you.

The team has potential to do v well:

Milfield: Cou, Erik, Silva, RLC, Chopper.

            Fwds: B'shit, Kane, Vardy.

Obviously, Sterling and Jesus sunk me but I have a feeling they will miss out this week. Happy to go without.

Most of the contact was after he started going down. I think there's just enough hint of contact before he started going down, plus the speed he was at, to avoid getting caught by the new rule

There was contact. He dived. That's simulation or at least theatrical exaggeration. Professional opinion is split between the "he is entitled to go down if there is contact" and the "he should stay on his feet if possible" camps.

Unless I'm much mistaken he won't get a ban. It's too grey an area.

              Yeah this.
They can only really ban players for 'clear' dives, where there is no contact. There was a bit of contact in this case, so it's impossible to say with 100% certainty that the tumble was fake.
