The community was put in a spin in midweek as early festive rotation wrecked best-laid plans for Gameweek 14.

But there’s no time to dwell on teamsheet tinkering as our community writers look ahead to the best sources of goals and clean sheets, while our Hot Topic posters examine the latest theories around Spurs’ current malaise.

Club loyalty versus Fantasy Football allegiance is also discussed, as is the potential of returning managers Alan Pardew and Sam Allardyce to improve their new clubs.

Elsewhere, the statisticians in our Members’ area have been examining budget goalkeepers, creative defenders and how Jamie Vardy compares to other strikers.

We finish off our round-up with a look at the latest standings in our community leagues.

The Community Articles

The ‘crowd’, being tracked by Hutch_James, has high hopes that Chelsea and Manchester City will prosper at home against Newcastle United and West Ham respectively. However, his latest update of their views finds them less keen on Spurs’ attack after their midweek 2-1 defeat to Leicester City.

Chelsea stars, as well as goalkeepers, are on the mind of the Career Hall of Fame top five, who according to TopMarx‘s analysis, were among those caught off guard by the Gameweek 14 surprises.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Spurs’ loss to the Foxes was their third defeat in five matches and has sparked a fire sale of assets, with three of their players, Christian Eriksen, Kieran Trippier and Ben Davies, listed among the top ten most sold players the morning after that midweek defeat.

This poor run of form has also heralded a run of new theories about why the London club is performing so badly, including A Manager Has No Name blaming the long term injury to centre-back Toby Alderweireld. Meanwhile, 42 Towels wonders whether Son Heung-min is stifling Spurs’ fluidity, and in particular the creativity of Eriksen.

Despite the decline suffered by Mauricio Pochettino’s side, Harry Kane is continuing to find the net, with his strike against Leicester his second in two matches and his seventh on the road. Reckoner points out that his steady returns put him among an elite group of strong armband candidates, even if his meagre six points against Leicester left those who captained him a little deflated.

The real-life football management merry-go-round continued this week with the appointments of Alan Pardew at the helm of West Brom and Sam Allardyce at Everton. AnzhiBabakin wondered what impact this pair of Premier League management veterans will have on their new teams.

Should they improve, these struggling sides offer a raft of value options to Fantasy managers. We canvassed your views on the best budget enablers for the coming Gameweeks to help free up vital cash.

Being a real-life football fan also came under scrutiny on our Scoutcast and this Hot Topic on how the community juggles conflicting allegiances to their club and Fantasy ranking.

Meanwhile, Gameweek 14’s teamsheets produced a fair few shocks as festive rotation struck early, including benchings for the likes of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.  Our “Rough with the Smooth” round-up is dominated by tales of woe from those who ended this midweek set of fixtures in the doldrums.

While Doosra’s statistics, posted via G-Whizz, are unable to predict line-ups, they do at least offer an insight into the likeliest sources of clean sheets and goals for Gameweek 15.

Finally, the Fantasy Premier League’s Bonus Point System came under scrutiny this week, with FFPro questioning whether awarding points for creating big chances was too subjective for this statistical-based, objective process.

The Members’ Tables

Newcastle stopper Rob Elliot’s benching against West Brom midweek sent shockwaves through his ownership, particularly those with a non-playing back-up such as Brighton reserve keeper Tim Krul or Crystal Palace’s out of favour Julian Speroni. FPL Virgin’s latest table looks at the best options for those in need of a reliable starter between the sticks in Gameweek 15 and beyond.

Dingo1982’s table looks at the most creative defenders, while watp73 has been specifically looking at the points potential of Chelsea’s rearguard.

Jamie Vardy’s goal against Spurs in Gameweek 14 was his second attacking return in a row and underlines his continuing potential as a third striker. Bobby6000 has been assessing how the Foxes striker compares to other forwards priced below 9.1.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Stewart Latham continues to lead Red Lightning’s Top 10k Any Season mini-league, while Konrad Struski has regained the lead in the FFS Members League from Dhruv Dharnidharka.

There’s no change at the summit of the FFScout Moderators and Contributors league, where Az is 15 points clear of second placed Anorak.

In TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing, the safety score was 36, which saw 181 players depart and 1,782 remain.

ZoumasBloomers has a commanding 25 point lead over FC Lackless in QPR Utd’s Frequent Summer Posters league for the chattiest community members over the warmest months.

Finally, the Community Watch tournament produced some nail-biting clashes in Gameweek 14, according to the organising committee’s latest update.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-Ups, please email us a summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head-to-head competition to jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Niasse is quite a strange one.

There seems to be an incredible optimism around him that I can't quite explain.

Yes he's very cheap and has returned quite nicely in the games he's played.

But we don't know what Sam will do. There are a plethora of upfront options and after the last win, surely he won't shake up the team too much?

4-0 was very flattering, including a penalty and Rooney's ridiculous lob. Everton are not a free flowing genius group after that one game.

Huddersfield got smashed by Arsenal, but don't you think they'll try to close up?

I write this as many people seem to be so incredibly optimistic , even going as far to suggest he'll bag a brace with less than 20 mins of pitch time.

By all means start him or have him as a sub, but I think a lot of people need to be more realistic.

Plethora is not the right word. One of DCL and Niasse have to play up top in my opinion for the pace and Niasse is the one scoring goals. See what Sam does

It's 'in your opinion' I'm afraid, they have Sandro and Rooney who can also play upfront. We don't know what Sam will do.

You're not a Premier League manager, you can't make the decision that Rooney isn't a striker anymore. He has played there before, therefore he may play there again.

There aren't a plethora of options up top though. There is really only DCL & Niasse, 1 is a CF, the other isn't.

I’ve genuinely lost total confidence in Hazard, Morata and Spurs. Watford do play open, so I’m leaning towards Kane but all the noises coming from the Spurs camp about being mentally tired, doesn’t inspire me at all.

I don’t have Salah, and quite frankly all my players have been carrying me ... I’ve had two 100k gameweeks in the last 3.

I had a feeling Salah would be benched last GW. Just based on what Klopp said and having Mané back. But even so, he scores a brace from the bench!

This is what I mean, when players are having purple patches, captain them. I think this is what Sterling is enjoying, and it’s West Ham up next. City don’t play until Sunday so that’s 3 full days rest.

Your right in what you say, but like last gw I had a feeling salah would score, stoke defence leaks goals home and away. Watford just play in open entertaining football in high scoring games
          Chel vs Watford 6 goals
          Watford pool 6 goals
          Watford manu 6 goals
          City Watford 6 goals

It’s a good point you make. I did fear the Stoke - Liverpool fixture as a non-Salah owner as Stoke are on a bad run. Turns out Mignolet should’ve been sent off and it could’ve been an entirely different game! So when your luck isn’t in, it’s not in.

I fancy Kane to score tbh, with or without Eriksen. It could easily be a 2-2 type of game.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll mull over the Sterling or Kane captaincy.

Biggest error I see there is probably the Kane guesswork. If you believe, like I do, that over 38 matches Kane will score more points than Morata, Jesus, Hazard etc, the 'smart' play is to captain every week unless the fixtures are screaming at you not to. It's a bit dullard, but I think over a season it works. That said, I've gone from 'always captain Kane' to 'always captain Kane if it's a close call in any way'. In other words, I'll only switch the armband when the case is very compelling.

I’m a believer of, “if you have Kane, you should be captaining him”, as that is why he’s worth nearly 13m. However, I’m not a big fan of captaining someone away from home.

Man City will score at least 3 v West Ham at home, so logically it makes more sense to captain Sterling.

I can’t see a logical argument for Kane(c) while Alli and Eriksen are out of sorts.

Why not captain Aguero then? Rotation is the answer and same treason I would steer clear of Sterling. If you want a home captain it has to be Hazard

Sterling isn’t being rotated, though. We don’t know if Aguero or Jesus will start week to week.

I’m clearly getting it wrong with the captain and have been playing it safe/sensible with my picks, so feel like going purely on form and fixture, rather than just fixture.

Real risk vs reward debacle. I’m happy for him just to start, surely he is due a rest soon

If my captain picks had been going well then maybe I could go with Sterling. But yep, he’s more at risk of rotation than say, Kane.

Am leaning towards, Kane now. There’s pens to consider too.

Thanks all, I really appreciate it 🙂

Fair points, I can see why you would. I'm a happy Sterling owner and not considering it at all really, but a lot of that is based on rotation risk only, so if you believe he will play, go for it.

I usually want my captain to have the highest ceiling, and that is generally Kane because he takes the most shots and most on target almost every week, even if he doesn't score the most points. Kane is always a few decent passes / crosses away from a hat-trick and massive captaincy haul. I don't feel that way about many others.

Man City will score 5 or 6 - but who plays ? Who gets the points ? Kane plays 90 every time and gets points ??

This and Kteam’s post above make very good points. I can see City scoring 3+ but quite conceivably Sterling may have zero involvement with the wealth of attacking talent available at City.

I think I’m going to go with Kane. Spurs played on Tuesday so they should be a little sharper than Chelsea, perhaps.

Complicated by berbs news that Moreno isn’t starting. I don’t want to risk him coming on as a late 1 point sub assuming berbs is correct, and he’s pretty in the know about pool), so, then it’s between Niasse and mee. I’d choose Niasse.

Aguero. He hasn't scored a league goal from open play since the car crash. He looks fit but his timing has been off. I think he needs another game and a few more goals to build his confidence before the Manchester derby, and WHU are the ideal opponents.

If Hazard continues to perform in his new role i would expect him to score more. The extra clean sheet point and the fact he gets bonus most times he gets attacking returns will add up. Whereas Morata needs to score at least a brace to get bonus.

BUT - there are dif more viable options in midfield than strikers at his price - surely ????

The value is all in midfield. I've got Kane and 2 cheap strikers (DCL & Wilson) and loving it. Don't want Lukaku, Morata, City forwards, or those mid-range frustrations like Vardy and Firmino.

When you downgrade that second premium striker, the rest of your team looks unbelievable. And since I would never captain that 2nd premium striker anyway, even more justified.

Does anyone know if Aguero will start this week?
Got him as captain at the moment but was thinking of sticking with Salah...

    Current team this week

    DDG
    Ward Ota Azpi
    Shaqiri D.Silva Salah Rich Gross
    Aguero (C) Morata

    Subs Kiko Daniels Abraham

Thoughts? Anyone change anything with that?

I doubt Pep knows until they've trained later today.

    On WC.
    Swapped Elliot for Hennessey.
    Right call?
Ell may have been just rested, but NEW fixtures stiffening. If Hen nailed(ish), Palace look the more likely to stack cleaners over next several weeks.
    Pope is main keeper.
    Thoughts?!?
