The first Gameweek of the festive spell begins early, under the lights of the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal host Liverpool in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season.

Certainly, based on previous meetings, our expectations are high, with Fantasy managers hoping for a goal-fest and points aplenty.

There’s a host of attacking players on show, with Mohamed Salah the key asset and headline act.

Fantasy Premier League’s most popular player is now part of 57.9% of squads and, having returned in nine of his last ten outings, will surely be fancied to inflict further damage on the Gunners. He produced a goal and an assist on his way to 11 points in the reverse fixture at Anfield.

Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino are also star turns who sparkled who both Gameweek 18. The pair arrive in north London on the back of double-figure scores with a goal and assist apiece in the 4-0 stroll at Bournemouth.

Sadio Mane completes the “fab four” attacking line-up for the visitors. Having been omitted from two of the last four teamsheets, the Senegalese is without a return since Gameweek 14.

Arsenal’s notable Fantasy assets are few and far between.

Indeed, one of their key figures is again on the bench tonight as concerns grow on the prospects of Sead Kolasinac. The Bosnian was in 863,000+ squads as recently as Gameweek 16. However, having sat out the last three outings, his stock and ownership is plummeting. FPL midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles is given the nod once again at left-back and will be tasked with containing Salah’s threat.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

you, like me , are playing one of the most highly owned, highly explosive players in the game at the moment.
It's a bit lame saying you don't want one of your players scoring.
Not meant to be overly harsh or critical but it is a bit FFS 2017 stuff.

You don't want him scoring if his EO is over 100%. You're basically cheering your rank going down.

We have nothing to gain from Salah scoring points. Everyone owns him, so only those captaining him make gains. Can't you understand that?

                  58% ownership.
less than 7% on FFS captain poll.

If your not happy, ditch the herd.
But don't moan when your player scores or assists, not rocket science.

Assuming you want to finish top 10k you have to beat them.

For every 1 point you get they are getting 1.14. That's not something to be pleased about.

If the Chelsea game is unexpectedly postponed, then he would be suspended for the following game instead.
So they have to wait till the game has actually been played.

I'll cap someone else and then bet that Kane gets at best a goal given the time between games and the fact that West Ham who always get up for a game against Spurs, shut them out. And also buy a huge sofa from Ikea.

Good idea. I just don't think Kane is worth the price and we now have half a season to look at his value. I do expect him to score more but I can do more with my money elsewhere. I may bring him back at the end of the season if Spurs are playing better and he is chasing the golden boot again. How many of his goals last season were in the last few games? I have held him and captained him too long and too many times and it's cost me dear.

Brave mate that's all I'll say. Just can't predict what Kane will do this season nor when he'll do it, I for now have him on a keep but rarely captain basis with sterling and Salah around, probably means I should ordinarily look at getting rid but have a high TV and happy with the rest of my team so can afford to accommodate him, if I had a lower TV I would give serious consideration to getting rid after the double.

It's a fair bet with how Kane's been this season. I could realistically see him bracing v Swansea and blanking v West Ham. That wouldn't cause much damage as the City mids also have a good fixture they could haul in. So good luck pal and maybe fortune favours the brave.

        Hello mate!

I hear you and I know it's a risk but if you are not going to captain him, what's the point of keeping him...? I just need to try something new. This season has been very frustrating.

I fully understand your reasons for doing so and i am spared that difficult decision for now by my TV but maybe in future he'll have to go if I need funds elsewhere. Just see keeping him as the safe option personally, he's stung me a a lot this season too so would hate to sell him only for him to go into beast mode, will reassess a few gws after the Dgw but may be too late at that point. Agreed, same boat, Kane captaincy has been my bane this season and I'd have been better off without him in hindsight but by the time I seriously consider getting rid it'll be time for his Golden Boot chase so fair play to you for taking the plunge.

My OR is the reason to be honest. It's all or nothing now and if he gets hot at some point I'll take hits to get him back i guess. My plan now though is to stick without him for a while and see if that helps me move back up the rankings...

It's not as simple as that. Plenty of those moves have resulted in positive points taken. Keeping and captaining Kane has resulted in my OR and many other of us also. Keep him if you want. I am not going to.

68 points over 19 weeks is 3.5 a game week. Given lets say half of those resulted in positive game weeks that's nothing really. Risk vs reward. Holding and captaining the wrong player is the major differential.

How is it horrible? Morata is going to be fully rested for 2 great fixtures against Stoke and Brighton. Firmino has been playing a lot recently and it seems like it's his turn to be rested, and Sturridge/Solanke will play. It's fine if you don't agree with me, but to dismiss my opinion when I'm trying to help another person is not really fair tbh

            • 8 Years

Why risk it? Firmino has bagged 12 and 11 points in his last 2 games. He’s not gonna be rested for the next 2. Maybe 1 but certainly not 2. He could easily haul against Swansea and Stoke. Morata isn’t on the same level as Firmino anyway. Even when he scores, he only gets 8 points max. Not worth his price tag.

            1. the snazzy viking
              • 9 Years
              7 years, 12 months ago

He'll definitely be rested for one game; at least. Solanke and Sturridge need some pitch time.

And I think your basing Morata's form on just his recent scores. He had 6 goals and 2 assists in the first 6 games he had, and those 2 games that he blanked in were against Spurs and Arsenal, far from easy fixtures. He also got a hat trick against Stoke.

I'm not saying Morata is the in form striker to get at all by any means because he hasn't shown it recently, but he is definitely being overlooked when he has the easiest fixtures a player could get when he is a player that has proven himself that he can score big against the weaker sides, especially with Hazard to supply the chances

              1. FantasyFootballSprout
                • 8 Years
                7 years, 12 months ago

I understand he’s a good option but to sacrifice Bobby for him is suicide imo. Solanke won’t start either game but will probably come on. Sturridge May start one but I couldn’t drop such an in form player with those fixtures even if he was a rotation risk. Plus, the guy who asked doesn’t even have the money to upgrade Firmino to Morata in 1 transfer so would have to take a hit. Definitely not worth it.

Maybe. I can see Morata outscoring Bobby in the next 2 by 6 points. However, he’s 2.0 more expensive. That’s the difference between a Richarlison and a Sane.

The Sanchez situation seems ludicrous all round, he wants to leave, Man City were prepared to pay a fair price for him....and for some reason the deal doesn’t get done.

So now he’s stuck at a club he will for certain be leaving, Arsenal won’t get any money at all now, so fans won’t be happy, everyone loses.

Going back to the luck vs skill debate in FPL, I think luck is the main thing in the game because of the chance of injuries, suspensions, rotation, etc. You could get 4 injuries in one week whereas someone else has none and the other would benefit highly from that. Added to that, the other player has the luxury to make moves that the other person can't do, eg. for this week doing Morata out and upgrading RLC to Coutinho. Of course, you can increase your luck highly in the game by analysing statistics in the game and eyeing up the form and fixtures but in the end it never translates to skill. The transfers are the main part of the game that affects points, and if those unfortunate suspensions and injuries limit and affect the ability of a person being able to make the transfers they'd like to make, then there's a great chance that they will not do well as the person who can make the luxury transfers. Being unable to cope with these injuries and suspensions also may decrease the team value, whereas other firing options are increasing, and can seriously harm the budget of transfers and forcing you into going for a player like RLC when another person may have someone as expensive as Coutinho. As might be expected, skill is still a big factor in FPL, as if you know which are the players to bring in and which to captain, bench, etc., then you will likely accelerate up the ranks, and the managers who have had great ranks consistently over the years prove this. Chances are if you put a lot of effort into something, you'll get a lot out of it, but it's football after all. Anything can happen in football. You can analyse all the data you like, you can put all the time and effort into the game as you like, but in the end, you'll never be able to predict everything that happens in a given week in fantasy football. One major injury or suspension can change a season, one hat trick can change it too. The time, effort, skill and determination counts but the luck ultimately decides the fate of your success.

Ye but. Holding Morata for weeks when having a 'back injury' and is on 4 YC is asking for trouble. And that's not a skilled decision to keep him (easy to say in hindsight), but when he got flagged with a back injury, and was on 4 YC's one could argue that the 'skilled' managers got rid while others kept him, and now blames luck?

Not saying you're completely off, but you using Morata as an example is unwise in this debate, since he got flagged with a back injury and was on 4 yellows.

Let's go with Mane as an example then before he got the red card. Fantastic form, good fixtures were coming but he unpredictably got a red card in that game against City. That changed a lot of people's seasons imo.

I agree though, Morata probably wasn't the best example

The skilful player can still find a way of coping. Bad luck should also hit your opponents at some time. The trick is to handle it better.

      1. the snazzy viking

That's probably where skill comes in. If the luck is equal then the more skilled player should come on top. If the lesser skilled player has more luck than the more skilled one, then chances are they'll do better. A world class FPL player could probably handle the constancy of bad luck better than a casual, but you can only cope so much with that bad luck

Good managers have very similar teams. So if one week you will have 4 players out, probably they will suffer too. Teams template with few differentials, could be you don't care about your team and do nothing with.

Not really, you have 14 players to play with plus chips to help you should be able to manoeuvre throu injuries etc unless you’re really unfortunate to get 4 at the same time but that’s very unlikely. 75% skill 25%luck

probably the best conclusion from this is that your skill is determined by how well you react to good and bad luck; the best managers tend to react better to it than the worse ones, eg. taking -8's to get Kane out (although that bit is biased 😛 ) when he is a great option and is playing against Swansea and the hammers in the double gameweek in a few weeks time

we all have our good and bad weeks. have a decent week or two, then brought back down to earth! like to think we all have our fair share. luck does play a part. then its down to the individual on there transfers in, and out, captain picks etc, these are usually based on what moves you think are best. injuries suspensions etc are more down to luck
some people have a bad week, say they were unlucky, have a good week say they are a genuis, they say other people are lucky when they have good week,or say poor judgement when they have a bad week
we have to trust our decisions and hope we have a little luck along the way to help us, andgive credit where its due
      good luck all

He shoots off target and losing the ball a lot. They are bonus points, not if you score (extra points).

Is effective ownership really that hard of a concept to understand?

Ownership % + captain %. If it's over 100% then his points will only improve your rank if you captained him.

          Genuine question Mull.
How many players per week would or do fall into that category?

Took a hit to being in Sane. Moved captaincy from Hazard onto him it didn't get saved. Took screenshots to send tonML rivals And captaincy has reverted back to to Hazard

Might work out. Always hit the "My Team" tab after to see if it saves.

Cheers TM usually do. Brvadado got the better of me and paid for it. Hope it's one of those quirks that works out.

    Early ideas on this team?

    Fabianski Elliot
    Otamendi Christensen Kenny Ogbonna Duffy
    Coutinho Salah Hazard Sterling RLC
    Kane Firmino Niasse*

    1 FT, 0.2 in bank.

Liverpool triple up a big issue next GW with possible rotation for a start.

    Cheers.

Bigger fish to fry until the blank/DGW. Needs a hit to do anything with Niasse.

Yeh, true. Maybe just hold. Almost impossible to know which Liverpool player could be rested. Literally could be either one, even Salah this time

Niasse to Quaner or save as of now.

Nothing too concrete yet with only 1 match played.

Nearly did it before deadline. Trying to have 2 FTs for GW22 but doubt I'll get there.

I did Niasse toto Quaner for a hit before procechanges from the pair.. saved me 0.2.. if I didnt I would have been priced out of my future plan.. had to many transfer to do down the line, so might as well take the hit before pricechanges instrad of taking one aftwrwards

I would save, because you risk transferring out the wrong one out of Coutinho and Firmino unless concrete news comes early about who is likely to be rotated.

Got the same issue as you with the triple pool, but I guess you just have to hope they do something from the bench 🙂
