Brighton leave it late to secure their place in the FA Cup fourth round after a generally lifeless 2-1 ‘derby’ win over Crystal Palace.

The draw then throws up the possibility of four all-Premier League ties, with rotation likely to be an issue for some as Gameweek 25 follows the day after the fourth round is completed.

Glenn Murray came off the bench to win the Seagulls’ third round tie with Palace when he got a bit of knee, chest and, maybe, arm on Uwe Hunemeier’s header.

The much-vaunted video assistant referee (VAR) system wasn’t used to determine the legality of the winner to add a minor crumb of controversy to what was an otherwise stodgy encounter in which Dale Stephens had given the home side the lead before a fine Bakary Sako goal leveled matters after the break.

More relevant from a Fantasy perspective was that both sides were left with injury issues to digest, with Palace boss Roy Hodgson coming off the worst.

He lost both Jeffrey Schlupp (foot) and Andros Townsend by half-time, with the latter’s ankle injury a concern for his 1.3% ownership ahead of Saturday’s visit from Burnley. Townsend left the Amex Stadium on crutches, while Schlupp was wearing a protective boot.

Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke were handed the night off as Hodgson rested both ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Burnley. Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who is Palace’s most-owned FPL asset on 6.9%, once again missed out through injury.

The Eagles’ manager couldn’t disguise his anguish post-match as he faces up to a situation in which four regular starting defenders and three midfielders will now potentially miss the weekend’s action.

“I can’t remember a situation where I’ve had to select a team with seven players totally out of the question in terms of being able to play and then to lose two more who’ve been playing every week for us making it nine. We can only hope that one or two of them that couldn’t play tonight through injury might just recover for the weekend if we’re lucky, but we’ll only find that out on Thursday or Friday. It’s going to be a late shout.”

Brighton midfielder Izzy Brown (knee) was another who didn’t last the first-half, although manager Chris Hughton was able to rest most of his first-teamers.

Key assets such as Pascal Gross, Anthony Knockaert and Shane Duffy were given the night off, while Murray only came on for the last nine minutes and Lewis Dunk was an unused sub.

Draw demands rotation for some

The FA Cup fourth round will take place over the weekend of January 26-29, with the televised matches yet to be confirmed.

Gameweek 24 precedes it, but that’s a full week before, barring the Monday, January 22 match between Swansea City and Liverpool.

But that doesn’t mean rotation won’t be an issue as Gameweek 25 will arrive hot on the heels of Monday night’s fourth round conclusion, with three Premier League matches taking place the day after, on January 30.

The fourth round draw for the top-flight teams is: Liverpool v West Brom; Peterborough v Leicester City/Fleetwood; Huddersfield v Birmingham; Notts County v Swansea/Wolves; Yeovil v Man United; Cardiff/Mansfield v Man City; Southampton v Watford; Middlesbrough v Brighton; Bournemouth/Wigan v West Ham/Shrewsbury; Newport County v Spurs and Norwich/Chelsea v Newcastle.

Should all the Premier League teams make it through their replays, the fourth round will contain four ties involving exclusively top-flight sides.

Gameweek 25’s Tuesday night fixtures – Swansea City v Arsenal, West Ham v Palace and Huddersfield v Liverpool – involve five teams that are, at present, still in the FA Cup, with only the Gunners already out of the competition for certain.

Based on what happened in the third round, the ‘lesser’ teams have rotated more as they view Premier League survival a bigger prize than cup glory.

But Liverpool and both Manchester sides fielded strong third-round teams, with Jurgen Klopp and Jose Mourinho perhaps viewing the FA Cup as a good opportunity for silverware as the league seems beyond them, barring an epic Man City disintegration.

As a result, Liverpool’s Gameweek 25 trip to Huddersfield might be shorn of some of the Reds’ stars if they’ve been used in the weekend cup tie against West Brom.

United’s situation is harder to call as their trip to Yeovil is, on paper at least, winnable without the need for a full-strength side, particularly as Gameweek 25 then involves a huge match away at Spurs.

As for Spurs, Mauricio Pochettino rested many of his key assets in the third round and is likely to do so again away at Newport.

The rotation strategy of Pep Guardiola continues to be a source of mystery. He fielded close to his best XI in the FA Cup at the weekend, despite its proximity to tonight’s EFL Cup semi-final tie with Bristol City.

A trip to Cardiff or Mansfield looks like a great opportunity to rest key players ahead of Gameweek 25’s visit from West Brom, but Guardiola remains a law unto himself.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is considerably easier to read. He rotated heavily for the weekend tie at Norwich and is likely to do so again for next week’s replay and, should they progress from that, the fourth round match-up at home to Newcastle.

Then again, the Blues entertain Bournemouth in Gameweek 25 – a fixture they would expect to win – so Conte could mix and match his selections should he begin to take the FA Cup more seriously as they progress through the rounds.

The other Gameweek 25 matches involving teams still currently in the FA Cup are: Everton v Leicester; Newcastle v Burnley; Southampton v Brighton and Stoke City v Watford.

      1) Did Kane gain or lose our trust over the Christmas period?

      2) With cheaper midfielders like Lingard, Arnautovic and Albrighton emerging, has the power 5 midfield had its brief time in the sun?

      3) Wasn't Hazard to Morata for a hit always going to be a sideways move?

      4) Were Salah sellers clever or stupid?

      5) With Aguero free from his jobshare with Jesus, will you be bringing him into your team?

      6) Sanchez has been strongly linked with a move to Man City. Is he worth breaking the bank for under Pep?

      1. The Rumour Mill
        • 9 Years

        1) No change. He scored when we didn't expect it, and blanked when we didn't. Its been that way all season so far, so nothing new learned here.
        2) Not necessarily. You could have Lingard as 5th mid alongside players like Sterling, Salah, Son, Hazard if you wished. I'd still class that as "power"
        3) I'll leave that for Mark...
        4) Too early to say. As with "Kanexit", it can only be judged later.
5 and 6 are linked. If sanchez moves to city, Aguero becomes a rotation risk again (as does Sanchez to be honest). So no, and no, in answer to your questions there 🙂

          3) I guess it depends on whether you think Morata and Hazard are comparable players. If the answer is yes, then it makes sense to free up Hazard's midfield slot because there is so much choice in midfield and so little choice in attack.

I think it depends whether this question is a retrospective one or a current one. If its retrospective then you could say up to now Hazard to Morata hasn't worked out at all.

Phrased as a current question, for those holding Hazard, I certainly wouldn't be looking to use 2 free transfers to switch him to Morata. He is playing with confidence, which Morata painfully isn't. The sideways switch from Morata to Hazard actually makes more sense I feel!

I do take your point regarding choice in attack and midfield though. Possibly the best way to take advantage of Chelsea's good fixtures then may be at the back, with 2 of Alonso, Azpi and Christensen?

No way he could have lost any trust.

With rumours flying around that Jesus could be out for the season, does that make Aguero a no-brainer? Or are 2 mids and otamendi still the best option?

At the moment it is possible that the fixtures postponed for the League Cup final could be rearrange for midweek in the same game-week (ie GW28). So the more immediate question is when will this be decided?

Not all transfers between players from the same team are sideways moves.

The only completely sideways moves are those between two defenders from the same team with identical points, stats, price and prospects.

It isn't a sideways move, it's an upgrade - but since Alonso costs 1.7m more the real questions are whether that 1.7m could be better spent elsewhere and whether it's worth a hit.

Thoughts on Arsenal assets?? Best fixtures of all teams until the end of the season. Time to bring in a defender? Or maybe Ramsey/Ozil ?

      1. The Rumour Mill
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 7 months ago

Good question. I think Mustafi or Bellerin are good shouts, both nailed. Ozil I don't think justifies his cost, and there are doubts over his future so not for me. Ramsey has been excellent when fit this season, but that was in a 3-4-3, and Wenger has gone back to 4-2-3-1 on occasion which doesn't suit him as well. Wilshire has also made an impressive case for his place in midfield. One to monitor, but there's too much doubt for me to bring him in at present.

You may have to keep an eye out on them for blanks too, its possible they could have 2 BGW's before any double gameweeks.

With only 3 double digit hauls all season and Alexis Sanchez likely to join Man City, is chopping up our midfield to get Aguero upfront really the answer?

He’s started all but one game since GW13 (GW16 vs Man Utd he didn’t play at all).
FPL points earned from GW13 onwards:

      Kane 68 (£12.9m)
      Firmino 57 (£9.1m)
      Rooney 51 (£7.5m)
      Aguero 44 (£11.7m)
      Depoitre 37 (£5.5m)

As far as City assets are concerned, surely we’d be better off with Sterling and KDB who are both more nailed on, cheaper and wouldn’t require a redistribution of funds.

If managers are looking to redistribute funds, doesn’t Alonso offer far better value with 12 points more than Aguero for £4.4m less?

Defence double digit hauls: Otamendi and Alonso 4
Midfield double digit hauls: Salah 8, Sterling and KDB 6, Lingard 4, Mahrez, Son and David Silva 3
Forward double digit hauls: Kane 7, Firmino 6, Aguero 3

Since it's the first scoutcast since the second wildcard became available, I was wondering if there were any early thoughts for using it.

Along the WC lines, if someone's team had a number of yellow or red flags, would they be best advised to use it early & reshuffle the pack, or take a few hits to save it for the later DGW's?

Their GW28 matches could remain in GW28 unless they also have Cup replays to fit in.

It is also possible that they could be brought forward, in which case we might be wanting to buy their players rather than sell them!

Just get the best players and don't worry too much about GW28 till later IMO - and leave yourself a couple of Free Transfers if possible.

Thoughts on Solanke as a viable 3rd striker should Firmino get the ban?

Is Azpi and Alonso double up in defence way too overboard if we don't have Morata?

Have you guys got any initial thoughts regarding the use of your chips over the rest of the season?

Is Aguero + Kane pairing too much money used in the frontline if the main captain candidate for most weeks is Kane?

Azpi and Alonso are expensive, but far better value than Morata.

The double-up does mean spending more on your defence and less on your forwards, and there may be some game-weeks when neither of them gets a clean sheet or attacking points, but they are both in great form at the moment.

For people with Kane + Firm/Morata + Cheapo - why is it not a sensible move to do keep Firm/Morata and do Kane -> Aguero? Idea would be to bring Kane back in a month:

      1) This times perfectly with Jesus injury
      2) The Kane fixtures are testing anyway
      3) It does not throw the balance of the team / need surgery to bring in Kun
      4) Allows most people to keep the power midfield + Alonso in defence

My brother was rank 3.5m a month ago and having a horrible season, with a bit of guidance he's had a very strong month, has now halved his rank and looking strong for the second half of the season.

Looking at your team you're team you are clearly a decent FPL player, you've got many of the players I would expect to find in a good FPL team at the moment.

I know it's hard not to when you're struggling but the advice I would give you, which is the same I gave him (and has helped the most) is stop taking hits. Just in the last 7 weeks you have taken 48 points worth of hits.

My move this week would be to wait until Friday for team news, then if all well transfer out Eriksen for Lingard to give you money to spread through the rest of your team.

That would give you money the following week to upgrade McArthur to Richarlison or Gros, etc.

Try to restrict hits to when they are desperately needed or you've already banked 2 free transfers so you are doing 3 transfers as part of a -4 mini wildcard.

Good luck for the season I'm sure you'll turn it around.

      1. With the demise of DCL, the injury to Austin and the bad punt of Depoitre, is the 3rd striker officially dead?
      2. (linked to the above). Does this mean we should focus on a flexi 442/352 and rule out the safe old formula of 343?
      3. Which of the double gameweekers will stay resolute in the New Year, and which should be packed away with the decorations? (Looking at people like Son, Arnie, Oggy, Adrian and so on).

Lots of players were expected to rise in price ahead of the double gameweek, yet the price rises did not take place. It's been a similar story so far with Salah's expected price fall.

With predicted price changes seeming to be unreliable, to what extent should we be taking hits to make/evade price rises/falls?

Can we really trust Aguero with the Captain's armband any more?

Double digit hauls - Salah 9, Kane 7, Firmino, Sterling, KdB 6 ... Aguero just 3 double digit hauls all season.

Aguero has only twice scored more than one goal in a game this season and rarely sees out 90 minutes.

If Aguero can not be captained in rotation with Kane, Salah etc., then is he even worth owning at that price?

Expecting a lot of smugness on the Scoutcast for not TCing Kane! But make sure you remind everyone that you said ditching Kane for the 3 games v City, Burnley and Southampton before the blank was probably a good idea. 36 pts in total was it? Think you called the Burnley clean sheet with quite a lot of confidence too. I'm obviously bitter cos I did TC Kane!

Is there really any point in phasing out (for a hit) Spurs and Hammers players brought in (for a hit) last week for the DGW, before probably bringing them back in (for a hit) for GW28 BGW?

I used my free hit in the previous game week, scoring 70. My existing team with a theoretical transfer of Morata out for Kane (c) would have scored 29 so my Free Hit was worth 41 points. Would you be happy with that return from It?

Which budget defenders to go for over the next 4-6 GWs?

Is a double up of Chelsea defenders (i.e. Alonso and Christensen) viable?

    My current team:

    DDG
    Christensen, Ota, Alonso
    Arnie, Eriksen, Son, Sterling, Lingard
    Kane, Firmino

    Elliot, Mee, Quaner, Kenny

    I have two questions:

    1. Should I play Mee over Christensen, and

    2. Should I captain Lingard over Kane or is the risk not worth it? (Very tempted atm)

OR is 40k if that matters regarding captaincy.

I think Christensen is a lock and I'm leaning towards Lingard too but Kane's ownership and undoubted captaincy popularity this gw could sway my decision.

Yeah I guess with Kane its always a risk as he is so unpredictable, could be a hat trick, could be a blank. Although Everton have tightened up a lot defensively under Sam. Surprised Kane has such a lead in the Poll, Lingard has that nice combo of form and fixture, and high goal involvement % too.

Replacement for Brady's position who's out for the season and fills the need a left sided player.

Dyche is loyal though so I can't see him starting ahead of Arfield in the short term, but if he makes an impact that could change. Pace is something we are short of as a team.

West Ham or West Brom for last man standing this week anyone fancy? Or just stick with united against a ragged stoke? 🙂

Probably won't have the steel to go any other way, but would like to keep a few of the big 5 or 6 around for later too. Thank so though.

    Alright chaps..

So with much tinkering I finally think I've settled on this lot for my WC. Changing formation to 442. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Mustafi Alonso Jones Ota

    Sterling Lingard Mahrez Salah

    Kane Firmino

    Elliot/McArthur/Chilwell/Quaner

      Very expensive defense/GK

Ive had Ota Alonso and Jones along time now and plan on keeping them. Mustafi has solid fixtures coming up too

So do Chelsea. What if Hazard/Morata start firing? Not left much room to manoeuvre.

Double MUN def may be good but in the same time it's too expensive. Downgrade one of them to improve the bench by getting someone like Gross.
Not sure about Mahrez's attitude when the transfer window closes.

Great team. Theres a reason why your defence and GK is expensive...

I would not sacrifice DDG for Adrian to get Arnie. Just my opinion

Doubt DCL plays, and bench/defence is a bit thin
