Manchester City reach the Carabao Cup final with a scare or two along the way as Pep Guardiola’s side eventually saw off Bristol City.

Goals from Leroy Sane, Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne saw City win 3-2 on the night, and 5-3 on aggregate.

More pertinently, from a Fantasy Premier League perspective, the league leaders will now participate in the Wembley final on Sunday February 25 – the same weekend as Gameweek 28.

However, the Premier League have confirmed this morning that City’s clash with Arsenal will currently remain in Gameweek 28 and be moved to Thursday March 1.

This could yet change, though, should Pep Guardiola’s side progress to the FA Cup fifth round and then be taken to a replay – essentially, that’s what the midweek after Gameweek 28 will be used for.

If Chelsea win tonight’s semi-final against the Gunners, then their Gameweek 28 match away at Man United will also have to be moved.

Judging by today’s announcement that could take place on Wednesday February 28 and also remain in Gameweek 28. Again, that would change if either side required an FA Cup fifth round replay further down the line.

Speaking post-match, the City coach made it abundantly clear that this season is all about trophies.

“I know we will be judged by the trophies we win. The important thing for me is to be there, keep going every game and Sunday we have a final against Cardiff. We want to keep going in FA Cup and try to keep going in the Premier League.”

That was reflected in the team he picked for last night’s trip to Ashton Gate – there were just the two changes from the weekend win over Newcastle, with only goalkeeper Ederson and Raheem Sterling given a rest.

That was great news for the 37% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who have made the England midfielder the side’s most owned player, particularly as Sterling had started 13 of the last 14 league matches as well as featuring in the FA Cup third round and the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final.

Not that others from Guardiola’s squad haven’t been busy, with De Bruyne a league ever-present this season, Aguero on a run of 10 consecutive starts in all competitions and Sane having started the last six straight matches.

However, the fact that all three scored – De Bruyne and Sane also supplied an assist, with Bernardo Silva laying on the other – suggests that fatigue isn’t an issue.

Yet while Guardiola’s rotation has been relatively limited of late, there’s no doubt that his side now faces an increasingly hectic schedule that may force him to shuffle his pack from time to time.

From this weekend, their upcoming calendar potentially looks like this:

28 January – FA Cup Fourth Round vs Cardiff
31 January – Gameweek 25 vs West Brom
3 February – Gameweek 26 vs Burnley
10 February – Gameweek 27 v Leicester City
13 February – Champions League Round of 16 v Basel
*17/18 February – Weekend of FA Cup fifth round
25 February – Carabao Cup Final
1 March – Gameweek 28 v Arsenal
4 March – Gameweek 29 v Chelsea
7 March – Champions League v Basel
12 March – Gameweek 30 away v Stoke City
*17/18 March – FA Cup Quarter Final

* Fixture not yet confirmed

Should they continue to progress in the FA Cup and also have their league match with Arsenal remain in Gameweek 28, City could essentially be facing a stretch of 12 matches in 49 days, or more or less one every four days.

Guardiola’s clear intent not to go a second season without a trophy has meant fringe players such as Yaya Toure, Ilkay Gundogan and Eliaquim Mangala have barely been used to take the strain off City’s key assets, with only the German midfielder brought on last night – in place of Aguero – after 82 minutes.

The Argentine forward has certainly prospered in recent weeks. He has eight goals in six January appearances across three competitions, but his 25.2% ownership will be bracing themselves for rotation once Gabriel Jesus returns from a knee injury in the near future.

As for the 12.5% who have stuck by Sane, there appears little doubt that their man is back to his best following a mini-slump in form – the German has now produced returns for four straight matches in all competitions.

Having been used relatively sparingly over recent weeks, Sane looks likely to feature heavily for the foreseeable future, although Guardiola might not see it that way.

It is at the back where issues are mounting up.

City have now played six matches in January and failed to keep a clean sheet in any of them.

Centre-halves Nicolas Otamendi (32.3%) and John Stones (4.4%) have started every match this year, with Kyle Walker (12.8%) starting four and featuring as a sub in the other two.

As the most owned defender in FPL, Otamendi in particular is starting to try his managers’ patience, with a mere three points to show from his last three league starts. Indeed, he is the most sold defender ahead of a plum home clash with West Brom, traded out by over 36,000 owners.

Unless City can get their defensive act together again – and their immediate schedule (WBA bur LEI) does at least offer some promise of that – sales in their key backline assets would not be a surprise.

Skipper Vincent Kompany was an un-used sub last night and is an obvious candidate for inclusion should Guardiola seek alternative options, with Otamendi’s first Premier League rest perhaps imminent.

For now, it’s all a lot of ifs and buts, with the first rotation hot spot likely to come around the Gameweek 27 visit of Leicester that precedes their Champions League trip to Basel just three days later.

Hi guys does anyone know if Sanchez will go up in price this week or is the Spurs fixture delaying the inevitable?

Obviously I don't fancy getting him in for a hit this week & would like to see how he fits into the United line up first. But the Scoutcast has convinced me to potentially get him in for gw26 & gw27 but can only do it if he doesn't rise in price.

What to do? Got some issues. 0.1ITB, 2FT

    Adrian - Elliot
    Otamendi - Jones - Christensen - Holgate - Ogbonna
    Salah - Sterling - Son - Arnautovic - RLC
    Kane - Aguero - Niasse

Might have to upgrade RLC or Niasse soon. I played 442 last week and can field four defenders with decent fixtures next week as well, but can't go on forever. Arnautovic has to go as well, so could downgrade him to upgrade one of them.

Want to get rid of Adrian and Son long term as well, but probably have to wait.

Interesting. I think I'm sticking to the standard WC in GW33, BB GW34 and TC in GW37 as it's been working quite well for me the last two years.

With no blank in GW28 I have no problems carrying either Niasse or RLC for a while, but I have to upgrade one of them soon.

But most likely GW31 or GW35 blanks.

I think John Stones is a really weak defender. He's not aggressive enough and doesn't really anticipate where the danger is coming from. Sure, he's a good footballer and can pass the ball, but it's been shown time and time again that he can't be relied upon. Last season he was leaking goals too (and yet most of the blame goes to Bravo).

With potentially no blank in GW 28, i'm thinking of preparing for the GW 31 blank as best you can. Then a WC for a GW33 WC to set you up for both DGW 34 & 37 whilst using the FH chip in 35.

    Sound like a plan?

From my understanding there will be a blank GW 31 & 35 due to FA Cup games. The bigger one will be 31 but if we have time to plan for it, it may be better to use your FHC in 35 if the big teams go deep in the FA Cup.

    2. Niemi
      • 11 Years
      8 years, 1 month ago

Too early to plan when you don't know the blanks in GW31. We could easily have Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea blanking, as well as popular "budget teams" like Burnley, Watford, West Ham etc.

If all the big teams go through you might have to destroy your team to field 11 in GW31 without using FH.

Yes fair comment, it's all hearsay at the moment. I still think we can plan somewhat when we know the FA Cup 5th round draw and obv the QF draw after that.

Would love a RMWCT... don't normally play it this early but needs must. Team is a mess. Languishing in my OR, nothing to lose.

Been working on this for a couple of days.

    GOALKEEPERS: Adrian and Foster
Rotation in next 10 GWs: CRY, SOU, WAT, HUD, swa, BUR, bou, BUR, SWA, STK

DEFENCE: Alonso, Jones, Van Dijk, Maguire, Dummett
Just generally solid and three of them have attacking threat. Enables 3 or 4 at the back.

MIDFIELD: Hazard*, Salah, Sterling, Shaqiri, L Cook
Cook as fodder. Hazard as potential captain next GW. Can't lose Salah and Sterling. Shaqiri is great value. I have kept 1.1m ITB to do Haz to Sanchez next week for Sanchez (c) vs HUD.

    STRIKERS: Aguero, Vardy, Ayew
Yes, Kanexit - but quite simply I am very confident Kun outscores him in the next three and will get Kane back in after that. Vardy has form and fixtures whilst Ayew has form and soon, fixtures.

    Adrian, Foster

Just sick of the cheapos to be honest mate... the likes of Duffy, Mee, Zeegalar etc have not been good for me and I've had no United cover which has been a killer.

I'm also going that route. VVD will score a lot of points, even though he will lose some CS due to subpar goalkeeping. Alonso and Jones are almost a must.

      Maguire to Chilwell or Simpson
Van Dijk - I like but pool's defence are just always terrible. Haven't seen much change with him there.

      Shaqiri is meh.
      Otherwise good.

      I'm also WCing this week.

I think your team looks nice. Your GKs are perhaps not the best FPL prospects, but they should get clean sheets and I guess you can then forgo the bonus points to boost your midfield.

Especially if you think that Hazard is a better C option than Kun this week.

Being in the 'Class of 92' is like being a white IVY league graduate in the states. You get bumped to the top of the q no matter how poorly qualified you are for the job.

"So Phil, I see you and your brother nearly destroyed Valencia...your hired!!"

Aye, it's pretty ridiculous Phil getting the Women's job as it's a totally different game to the men's at elite level, with the WSL being around for the last few years and having some decent coaches Stateside (Where the Women's game is clearly better) you'd have imagined that there would have been better candidates for the job if the FA had bothered to do some due diligence.

Loads of good managers failed at Valencia.

What’s more ridiculous is that he’s never managed, never shown any interest in the women’s game, and didn’t even apply for the job.

The FA are so incompetent it’s embarrassing.

lots did fail but I have actually spoken to valencia supporters and the concencus is there has been nothing quite as shambolic as the neville bros in all their history..it was laughably incompetent at all levels , from tactics to training to team selection. they handnt a clue..but yes -that aside- is not the only reason he shouldn't have got the job...ditto Giggs

Hmm fair enough, that surprises me because Neville wasn’t responsible for the shitty squad he inherited and I don’t think he made any signings. Obviously he did an atrocious job but he’s not the one that almost drove them to financial ruin.

yep true, they cant be blamed for how the club was run but I think in all honesty what sticks in the craw for them was the 7-0 humiliation at the hands of barca and how he approached that game.

I'd rather not go for Willian. He could be benched anytime when Morata is back

It's pretty damn funny as well, not sure why they're so keen to move away from the Yorkshire white rose but the guy behind Leeds has always seemed to be a bit of a nugget.

Hi All where should my priorities be with this team?

    1FT 0.2 Itb

    Adrian
    Shindler (liv) Otamendi Azpilicueta Mee
    Sterling Salah Arnautovic (injury)
    Firminho aguero(c) Kane

Speroni (not playing) tom Carroll Mbemba (flagged and not playing) Loftus-Cheek (injury)

Tempted to do Arnautovic to Willian/Shaqiri/Walcott

Or Kane Arnautovic to vardy Mahrez-4

I’ve pressed the “notify me of replies” button so your advice will not be in vein

Feel like I need to upgrade shindler Loftus-Cheek tom Carroll though

    De Gea
    Vert Ota Ogbona Alonso
    Sterling Arnie* Salah Lindgard
    Kane Aguero

    Subs: Elliot, Crouch, Obiang, Mbemba

I was planning Vert to VVD but now its better to do Arnie to Shaquiri?
