Liverpool cruise through in the Champions League, Man City’s midfield gets a boost or two and some possible Gameweek 31 differentials emerge.

Reds coach Jurgen Klopp declared pre-match that he would make only ‘two or three’ changes to his side for the visit of Porto in the Champions League.

He trotted out the usual ‘game not won yet’ and ‘owe it to the fans’ lines to justify his selections ahead of a Round of 16 second leg his team was leading 5-0.

And in the end, he was fairly true to his word.

He made five changes, with a rest for Mohamed Salah the main news.

The 60.9% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers with the Egyptian in their teams would have been grateful ahead of Saturday’s Gameweek 30 trip to a defensively vulnerable Man United.

But Klopp then and went and brought his star man on for the final 16 minutes of a second leg that had been meandering to a goalless conclusion pretty much from the first whistle.

After the match, though, Klopp went on to suggest that Salah is set to have today free from training ahead of Saturday’s lunchtime encounter.

“It was clear if it was possible that we give him the last 20 or 15 minutes. If it was 15 then he has to train again tomorrow! No, I told him if he runs a lot, he doesn’t have to train tomorrow – I thought he was quite lively!”

In the end, there was no harm done to either Salah or his attacking partners Sadio Mane (9.1%) and Roberto Firmino (42.1%), who both started and played 74 and 62 minutes respectively.

With the big guns injury-free, if scoreless, Fantasy interest turned to the defence.

Klopp left Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold on the bench, while Andrew Robertson was left out after picking up a knock against Newcastle last weekend.

Post-match, the manager was optimistic on the left-back’s fitness ahead of the trip to Old Trafford.

“Robertson had an issue but not big”.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who had started three straight league matches and produced assists from the last two of them, was another to watch from the sidelines.

Whether he will make it four consecutive Gameweek starts will depend on how Klopp sets up his central midfield against United, with Emre Can, Jordan Henderson and James Milner getting the nod last night.

Up front, Adam Lallana made his first start in two months and looked suitably rusty.

Skipper Henderson played from start to finish but was spotted with an ice pack on his thigh after the final whistle. Again, Klopp played down the injury:

“It was a dead leg. ‘Just’ I don’t know – it’s painful enough but it’s a dead leg and should not be a problem.

The Reds are the first English team into the hat for the Champions League quarter-finals draw, with the two ties to be played in early April.

The first leg sits between a Gameweek 32 trip to Crystal Palace and the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, the return following the Everton match and before a visit from Bournemouth in Gameweek 34.

Should Klopp choose to shuffle his pack to prioritise the Champions League, the fixtures before and after the two-legged tie look the more obvious rotation hot spots.

Pep talks of returns

Raheem Sterling and Fernandinho could conceivably be back in action tonight as Man City look to complete the Champions League job against Basel.

Pep Guardiola’s men lead 4-0 from the first leg, which should mean rotation of key players ahead of the Gameweek 30 trip to Stoke City.

Sterling has missed the last two league matches with a hamstring injury, losing more than 700,000 FPL managers as a result. He’s also top for transfers-out heading into this weekend, with a further 124,000+ getting rid.

Fernandinho is another to have sat out the last two fixtures with a hamstring issue.

Both are now nearing fitness again, according to Guardiola.

“Ferna is much much better, as is Sterling. Maybe tomorrow (against Basel) they won’t play, but they may be ready for Stoke City.”

How City line up tonight should tell us a lot more about the Stoke selections, with Bernardo Silva’s run of five successive league starts looking at risk if Sterling returns to contention.

Chelsea’s defensive boost

Fans of Chelsea clean sheets would have been heartened by the news that N’Golo Kante has been given the all clear after missing Sunday’s 1-0 loss at Man City.

The French midfielder fainted at the training ground prior to the weekend trip to the Etihad, but tests have revealed nothing sinister.

Chelsea have kept only one clean sheet in the four matches Kante has been absent this season, and have now managed just one shut-out in the past five Gameweeks.

They’ll seek to rectify that when Crystal Palace visit on Saturday.

Cynics might suggest the Blues’ defensive strength has also been boosted by the news that David Luiz will be sidelined for at least another month with knee and ankle issues.

The fact that the Brazilian has only managed three sets of clean sheets points from 10 league appearances this season would appear to back them up.

Mooy nearing fitness again

Those few FPL managers eagerly seeking a Huddersfield option for their Gameweek 31 sides will be pleased to hear that midfielder Aaron Mooy is back in training following a knee injury.

The Australian international has missed the last three matches, but is now hoping to be in contention for the crucial visits of Swansea City and Crystal Palace over the next two Gameweeks.

Huddersfield attacking assets have served few of us well this season, with Mooy a notable exception, with 94 points for a modest 5.3 outlay.

Yet with just two assists in his last nine league outings, he’s fallen behind fellow midfielders Rajiv van la Parra (two goals in the last three Gameweeks) and Alex Pritchard (one goal, two assists in the previous three) in our quest for Gameweek 31 differentials.

The Diouf is out…

Another side in Gameweek 31 action, Stoke City, will have to fulfil their fixture without striker Mame Diouf.

He picked up a shoulder injury in last weekend’s 0-0 draw at Southampton and will now miss the next two matches, at home to Man City and then Everton.

Midfielder Eric Choupo-Moting (3.5%) ended up as the lone striker at St Mary’s and would be a potential differential if he were to repeat the trick over the next two Gameweeks.

Potters boss Paul Lambert doesn’t have a wealth of forward options to choose from – the veteran Peter Crouch or the one-man goal drought that is Saido Berahino are his chief alternatives.

But Choupo-Moting’s last eight starts have produced just one assist, so he remains a massive punt.

…But a Toffee back in

Everton’s current defensive woes mean the return to fitness of centre-half Ramiro Funes Mori couldn’t be better timed.

The Toffees haven’t kept a clean sheet for nine matches and will be without Ashley Williams for three matches following his dismissal in the 2-1 loss at Burnley last weekend.

Funes Mori has been out for nearly a year with a knee injury, but came through a full 90 minutes in an U23 match on Monday and is now talking up his prospects ahead of clashes with Brighton and Stoke (in Gameweek 31).

“I’m fit, I’m ready to play. I’m feeling good – hopefully I get my chance and go on from there.”

To all GW32 WC'ers. Many of you will have Sterling with a healthy profit locked up. So the decision I need to make that impacts on GW30/31 transfers is....

Will Sterling be in my GW32 WC team? City will be close or have won title, so rotation will be rife. Sterling will want to stay match fit but not risk an injury before World Cup. Fixtures from GW30: stk, blank, eve, MUN, tot, SWA, whu, HUD, sot

If I ditch him I might as well do it now before I lose 0.1 of value and get in Mane/Walcott or Shaq. If I'm keeping it will be Son that has to make way and I've no profit tied up in him at all.

TL;DR - Is Sterling going to be in your GW32 WC team?

Nope I don’t think so he will be in my team. Might opt for Sane/Silva instead. So I will be looking to sell him come GW31.

      Most likely not.

Want to play him against Stoke, so won’t move him until 31 - but then he’s gone for a non-blanket.

I think he's seen as an enabler and no-one needs the cash with all the dross in GW31. He has a poor fixture again this week compared to better fixtures for other players who people can afford anyway. For many, he is directly competing with players like Walcott, Siggy and all other GW31 mids, regardless of price. The spots are limited by FTs, so why spend one on Milli given the competion?

I'm in the same boat. I'd much prefer GW33, but it all comes down to how rubbish my GW32 team is compared to a WC team. I've already written off a small drop in OR in GW31 by only fielding 6-7 players. I don't want to fall a further 30points behind just because I need an extra week to decide my optimum DGW bench.

just my point but dunno if its correct but if u get a player for a hit u need 5 points from him to be a success.if u get 2 equally explosive players for a -8 u need 9 points from a combined both(4.5 on average) to be a success .if u do it for a -12(u need 13 from 3 to be a success).i am not going more than -12 but the chances of nailing a haul is more for 3 players than just doing it for one player(if u cant field a full 11).example is so u have to pay a hit to get king in but u also have a slot for walcott or stanislas ,is it better to not just do both and hope the combined total overtakes 8 points or bank on one player to score 5 points or more. This is for players with wildcard and mostly playing it in gw32 (which is the consensus)

yes and it seems logical, but buying lots of lottery tickets doesn't always mean you will win 😉

    2. Deulofail
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 1 month ago

If you buy 100 lottery tickets for £1 each, you are more likely to win that if you only buy 1. But the 100th lottery ticket i worth the same as the 1st, rgardless of how many you bought. The probability of the ticket being a winning ticket doesn't change according to the other tickets. I

f you win £1 million, you still have to minus the £100 from your winnings. The same for your hits. If one of your 3 new players gets a good score of 8, and the other 2 only get 2pts, you still have won 14 points, but you still have to take away 12 (for a profit of 2pts). However, the probability of that player getting an 8 is independent of the probability of the other players geting an 8 or 2 or 0 or "a haul" or any score.

The more you buy, the more likely you are to win, but if the odds of the individual lottery tickets are stacked against you, the more likely it is that you waste you money (or your points).

Thats y i have restricted to a max of -12(3 lotteries but a a proven explosive potential) .And the picks we get before gw31 are the best picks out of that inconsistent lot and is a better bet of points than compared to quaner dcl and other bench players the full 11 teams have(teams that have planned in order to get full 11 with no hits)

I don't think the logic is quite right. If you take a hit for a player, they need to score 4 more points than the player you take out for it to break even, 5 to be a success. So you have to factor in what the original player would have got as well. You're correct that as you add players to the hit, you can effectively 'share' the 1 extra point needed to go from break even to success between them, but I'm not sure that makes it better. Yes, you increase the chance that one of the players may pay back the entire hit, but you also increase the chance that a player you removed does well and ruins it. If you're talking about a week when the players you take out are blanking (like GW31) then the downside risk is removed; hits make more sense when you know the removed player cannot possibly score (if you're only looking ahead 1 week).

Then it's a fair point. Let's assume for a minute that you find 3 players who score 2 points 60% of the time, 5 points another 20% of the time and 10 points the other 20% of the time; so an assist 1 game in 5 and a goal + assist/bonus 1 game in 5 (that's not far off Walcott's scoring when he's played 90 minutes for Everton). Your expected return from each player is 4.2 points per game so your overall expected return from the 3 players is 12.6 so taking the 3 hits is expected to pay off. If you can find lots of players with this sort of scoring pattern you should be increasing the chances of improving your score (and lowering the chances of an extremely low or extremely high outcome). Not sure how many players playing in GW31 fit this bill, though. Oh, and the players returns have to be independent of each other or it's a bit more complicated.

If you get a player in for a hit you need 6 to be even (assuming other player only gets 2).

If the dumped player DEFINITELY isn't playing, AND subs are not playing, then you are right, 5 will get you a profit. Personally I would only take hits for players definitely not getting points who will be getting rid of anyway.

If I make a transfer (or transfers), then say the next day make more but this time hit free chip button, are the first 2 players in my actual team going forward?

Purely for 31 alone, who do you think is most likely to score well? Is there anyone that you could justify a hit for?

    A. Coleman (Sto)
    B. Ake (WBA)
    C. Townsend (Hud).
    D. PVA (Hud)
    E. Stanislas (WBA)
    F. Dawson/Hegazi (Bou).
    G. Van la Parra/Mooy (CPL)

I wouldn't take a hit for any of them, but my top 3 would be:

      Stanislas
      Ake
      Mooy

Wouldn't take hit, but would consider Coleman, Townsend (playing as well as he ever has) and Stanislas. If Mooy plays this week would consider for GW31.
