Having assessed the options in Defence for Double Gameweek 37, our attentions now turn to the key targets in attack.

With five of the top six teams set to play twice, there is no shortage of options available to Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers ahead of tomorrow’s 7 pm deadline.

However, the current state of the transfer market reflects the favourable schedules on offer for Spurs and Man City, with both sides supplying two of the top five most bought attackers for the penultimate round of matches.

Back-to-back home meetings with Huddersfield and Brighton for the champions means it’s a case of just how many City picks we can squeeze in.

Subject to more transfers in than any other player, Gabriel Jesus (10.4) has scored in each of his last four starts and is one of the strongest contenders for those with the Triple Captain chip active.

However, Raheem Sterling (9.1) has been more prolific, serving up three successive double-digit hauls. Three goals and seven assists in his last six appearances since returning from injury means that he is the top target in midfield for Gameweek 37.

Those two are the clear in-form options, with Kevin De Bruyne (10.3, a goal and assist in eight) and Leroy Sane (8.6, two goals and an assist in six) less convincing of late. Meanwhile, concerns over David Silva’s (8.3) pitch time were confirmed when he was omitted from the squad at West Ham.

Harry Kane (13.0) and Christian Eriksen (9.6) have been the most popular transfers in among the Spurs contingent for a trip to West Brom and home encounter with Newcastle.

A long-term target for the Triple Captain chip, Kane has scored in back-to-back matches with Brighton and Watford and has three goals over the last six matches.

However, over their respective last six, both Eriksen (four goals, two assists) and Dele Alli (9.0, four goals, three assists) have outperformed their pricier team-mate.

Son Heung-min’s (8.3) appeal is in decline, though.

The South Korean has just two assists in five and, as witnessed as recently as Gameweek 34 against Man City, remains the most prone to rotation among Spurs’ big-hitting attackers.

The second most bought midfielder behind Sterling, Paul Pogba’s (7.9) recent improvement has coincided with a switch to 4-3-3 over the last four matches. Three goals and an assist in that period make him Man United’s form player for trips to face Brighton and West Ham’s obliging defences.

Alexis Sanchez has already flourished of late, with a goal and four assists in his last four matches. However, a hefty price of 11.5 has seen him mainly overlooked, with Pogba regarded as the United go-to option.

Ruled out of tomorrow’s trip to Brighton, Romelu Lukaku (11.5) looks unlikely to play a part in the Red Devils’ pair of fixtures. With Jose Mourinho hopeful that the striker will be in contention for the FA Cup final later this month, either Marcus Rashford or Anthony Martial could occupy the lone striker role.

Arguably, with two goals in his last six, Lukaku has struggled for form anyway, while the same can be said for Jesse Lingard, (6.0) who has two assists in five, despite starting four of those fixtures.

Along with Man City, Chelsea and (LIV HUD) and Leicester (WHU ARS) are the only other sides to play both their fixtures at home.

Antonio Conte’s decision to bench both Eden Hazard (10.5) and Willian (7.1) in the Blues second match of Double Gameweek 34 reminds us of the risk attached to their attack at this point, with an FA Cup final to come.

Nonetheless, a goal and two assists in his last three starts across all competitions hint at a return to form for Hazard, though Willian now looks a no-go option as a pick after earning just nine minutes as a sub at Swansea last weekend. Meanwhile, the uncertainty over the lone forward role makes Olivier Giroud (8.3) no more than a punt.

Back-to-back blanks against Southampton and Crystal Palace have seen many part company with Foxes’ pair Jamie Vardy (8.9) and Riyad Mahrez (8.8).

Vardy had scored in four successive fixtures prior to the recent drought, though the Algerian has now failed to produce points in each of his last five. With so many in-form alternatives, the pair have been sold on by 32,000+ and 28,000+ respectively.

Arsenal’s result in Madrid this evening will ultimately dictate how we view their prospects ahead of a home clash with Burnley and trip to Leicester.

Should they exit the competition, we expect Arsene Wenger to roll out a strong line-up from this point onwards in his final three league matches in charge.

Certainly, there are form options to consider in midfield and up front. Aaron Ramsey – at a cost of just 6.8 – has four goals and an assist in his previous four Gameweek appearances, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan (7.7) found the net at United in his return to action last Sunday.

Alexandre Lacazette (10.2, four goals in four) and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang (10.7, five goals and three assists in seven) offer alternatives up front for those with cash to splash.

Further down the table, the relegation battle could provide a number of viable options.

West Ham’s Marko Arnautovic (7.0) is among the most appealing targets ahead of a trip to Leicester and home encounter with Man United.

Since being moved up front by David Moyes in Gameweek 16, the Austrian is ranked second in midfield for both shots on target (25) and goals (ten).

Swansea’s Jordan Ayew (5.3) and Newcastle’s Ayoze Perez (5.4) are the leading budget candidates for transfers in, acquired by 70,000+ and 29,000 respectively.

Up against Bournemouth and Southampton’s suspect defences, the Ghanaian has scored five of his side’s 15 league goals since Carlos Carvalhal was appointed back in Gameweek 21.

Perez has a mixed Double Gameweek on his agenda, with a favourable trip to Watford followed by a testing visit to Spurs’ resilient defence.

Nonetheless, the Magpies’ striker has three goals and a pair of assists in five, including double-figure hauls against Leicester and Arsenal.

Interest in Dusan Tadic (6.2) is on the rise after a two-goal haul in last week’s win over Bournemouth – the fourth most bought midfielder in the Gameweek, he’s netted three of Southampton’s five goals under new manager Mark Hughes.

Meanwhile, Charlie Austin (5.8) should not be overlooked ahead of trips to Everton and Swansea – an average of 114.3 minutes per goal is bettered only by Sergio Aguero and Kane up front.

The schedule all but rules out investment in Brighton (MUN mci) and Huddersfield’s (mci che) attacks, with the Seagulls’ Pascal Gross (5.9) the likeliest source of points from either side – he’s been he involved in 44% of his side’s goals when on the pitch.

The Top Targets

Harry Kane – now just four goals behind Mohamed Salah in the race for the Golden Boot, Kane’s owners will be hoping for a repeat of last season’s five-goal and 31 point haul in Double Gameweek 37. He remains Spurs’ most explosive option in FPL, with eight sets of double-digits to his name. However, he has just one such return in his last 13 starts.

Raheem Sterling – with 18 goals and 17 assists to his name, an average of 7.2 points per match is second only to Liverpool’s Salah (8.6) this season. Since returning from injury in Gameweek 30, Sterling has more big chances (eight) than any player and sits among the top three for shots (22) and efforts in the box (17).

Gabriel Jesus – a recent run of three straight starts has harvested three goals, two assists and four bonus points. From Gameweek 34 onwards, Jesus is the number one player for big chances (six) and efforts on target (seven).

Christian Eriksen – with a goal or assist in six of the last eight Gameweeks, the Dane has improved his consistency as the season comes to a close. Over that period, Eriksen has produced more shots (25) and key passes (18) than any team-mate.

Marko Arnautovic – ten goals and five assists in 17 matches as a forward underlines the Austrian’s potential. Since David Moyes was appointed manager, Arnautovic has averaged 6.5 ppm yet is still owned by just 6% of FPL managers.

Jordan Ayew – the standout budget candidate up front for those playing their Bench Boost chips, Ayew faces a pair of defences that have struggled for resilience. Under Carvalhal, he has produced more shots (20), efforts in the box (14) and attempts on target (ten) than any team-mate.

The Differentials

Eden Hazard – over the last four round of fixtures, only Salah (17) and Sterling (16) have fired more shots on goal than Hazard’s 12. According to our expected goal involvement members’ data, the Chelsea wide man is ranked third behind Sterling and Jesus among Double Gameweek 37 players in that spell.

Paul Pogba – the Frenchman has returned a respectable 5.5 points per match (ppm) over his 24 appearances for United. Since the switch to 4-3-3, he has fired more shots (12), efforts in the box and attempts on target (both five) than any team-mate.

Alexis Sanchez – owned by just 3.3%, last season’s top scoring player in FPL has matched team-mate Pogba for double-digit hauls since the switch to 4-3-3, supplying two apiece. Should Lukaku be ruled out, Sanchez even offers Mourinho an alternative up front for the two road trips.

Dele Alli – two of Alli’s three double-figure hauls have arrived in his last five league appearances as he finishes the campaign with a flourish. He is the only Spurs attacker to return points against both their upcoming opponents earlier in the season.

Son Heung-min – when on the pitch, a 34% goal involvement places Son between team-mates Alli (36%) and Eriksen (32%). He remains the most explosive option in the Spurs midfield thanks to six double-figure hauls.

Kevin De Bruyne – the Belgian’s output at the Etihad makes him an option for those looking to treble up on the City attack. At home, De Bruyne is ranked second only to Salah for shots on target (25 to 40) among midfielders, while he claims the top spot for key passes (62) and assists (12). No team-mate has bettered the playmaker’s six double-digit hauls in front of his own supporters.

Aaron Ramsey – sitting in just 4% of squads, the Welshman’s average of 5.8ppm is more than any Gunners’ team-mate. Lose in Spain this evening, and Ramsey’s prospects of a run of starts will surely be on the up as Wenger looks to end his tenure on a high.

Dusan Tadic – the Serbian has upped his attacking potential as Southampton look to scramble clear of the drop zone. Since Mark Hughes took charge, no team-mate has bettered Tadic for shots (nine), efforts in the box (seven), attempts on target (five) or key passes (12).

  1. Hazard Appeal Boosted By Formation Switch

Chelsea returned to a 3-5-2 formation in their 1-0 win at Swansea in GW36, making two changes from their FA Cup semi-final – Courtois replaced Caballero, and more significantly for fantasy managers, Bakayoko came in for Willian, as he did in the final half-hour against Southampton.

There’s been plenty of speculation that this switch will mean further reduced game-time for Willian over DGW 37. However, as well as replacing a wide player with a central midfielder, this system also pushes Eden Hazard forward into a central role. Hazard supported Giroud against Swansea, but also had great success with a similar set-up alongside Morata earlier in the season.

Hazard has started 8 games in the 3-5-2 in the league this season. In those matches, he’s managed 5 Goals (0.63 per game), 3 Assists (0.38 per game), 4.92 xG (0.62 per game), 0.69 xA (0.09 per game), 31 Shots (3.9 per game), 16 Key Passes (2.0 per game) and 63 FPL Points (7.9 per game).

By contrast, in Hazard’s other 18 league starts this season, he’s produced 7 Goals (0.39 per game), 3 Assists (0.17 per game), 2.80 xG (0.16 per game), 6.00 xA (0.33 per game), 33 Shots (1.8 per game), 57 Key Passes (3.2 per game) and 99 FPL Points (5.5 per game).

The massive 2.4 PPG difference has largely been down to the huge increase in Hazard’s goal threat in the 3-5-2. Even if you discount the fact that both Hazard’s penalties this season came in the 8 games Chelsea played that shape, his expected goals (xG) per game has been 0.27 greater in this formation, and his number of attempts per game has more than doubled.

On the other hand, Hazard’s creative output seems to have suffered a serious downturn in the 3-5-2, not in terms of FPL Assists, but in the underlying stats. It appears that this system leaves more of an attacking onus on Hazard, whereas the midfield trio are tasked with more of the creative duties.

However, if you are desperately searching for a differential to lead a late charge on the top spot in your mini-league, Hazard could be your man. His extra goal threat in this system makes him an explosive option, as he has scored three braces in his eleven matches in all competitions with the 3-5-2 this season (away at West Brom and at home to Swansea in the league, and at home to Roma in the Champions League).

With a DGW at home to Liverpool and Huddersfield, and 3.2% ownership in the top 10k last gameweek, the potential is there, although the risk is that Conte decide to shake things up once again.

Very nice. I don't think this punt is for me. A hit for Hazard seems a bit much, even from Mahrez or Son. Food for thought, though, thanks. 🙂

I hope the switch increases Alsono's likelihood to start each game, but it probably doesn't.

I have no idea. My feeling is that the 3-5-2 has worked well enough that Conte will persist with it against Liverpool, so I don't see Willian starting that one.

The Huddersfield game is anyone's guess, though, and so he might revert back to the 3-4-3, which could easily mean a big haul for Willian (he got 16 points in the reverse fixture).

If Chelsea win both their DGW matches, they'll be level on points with Liverpool going into the last day, so the top four is certainly not out of reach.

I think if they beat Liverpool, you'll see a strong side against both Huddersfield and Newcastle, without much rotation, meaning the likes of Hazard and Alonso could be great picks for GW37-38, and I'm not sure Willian would start more than one of the final three. If they don't win at the weekend, though, the focus may shift towards the FA Cup final, in which case it's anyone's guess.

great post but i think the uncertainty of the first game is making Hazard and other Chelsea assets very vulnerable, subject to rotation if they lose point vs liverpool, which is a distinct possibility. And if they will want to win vs Liverpool i don´t think Conte will play 3-5-2... Klopp loves to play vs that kind of structures (i think Conte watched the game vs Rome last week-)

Great read. Got him and Vardy over Willian and Lukaku on my GW32 WC. Despite Hazard getting less than I hoped for so far, it still paid off.

Hopefully he can do some big damage as a differential this double.

I understand that but that was when bakayoko and drinkwater were playing okay
and willian was out of form and since the Barca first leg match its not been the case and since Chelsea need wins by a huge margin vs hudders if they win vs pool he has to play 3-4-3.If Chelsea are not in the top 4 picture he might rest hazard if needed, so willian playing vs hudders looks a win-win and for the 3-5-2 formation to click u need Fabregas as a part of midfield 3.Cant see Fabregas playing thrice in 7 days.

Yep, that makes sense. Think that's probably reason enough to keep Willian for GW37, unless you have a free transfer to spare.

As for Hazard, the best-case scenario for owners might be that Chelsea play the 3-5-2 against Liverpool, win that game, then Hazard starts in an attacking 3-4-3 against Huddersfield. That could easily produce a great DGW score.

Thats a potential risk but hazard could be a great cap option if searching for a punt. But just cant see Alonso being beneficial. Emerson will play vs hudders and Alonso will be pushed back by Salah and it will be difficult for him to get attacking returns if conte plays 3-5-2 vs Liverpool

I think you might be right. It's a big risk, but it's also a rare opportunity to bring in a player that basically nobody owns who could legitimately score 20+ points. I'd only recommend it to someone trying to catch up a big lead, as it's a pure high-ceiling, low-floor pick.

The success of this system very much relies on an in form striker. Earlier on, before Morata hit his road block the 3-5-1-1 worked really well as they played off of each other quite well. Once Morata dropped off though, this formation was not condusive to attacking returns. Giroud does seem to be in good nick so I think yes, this could work well in this double. Worth a punt for me but I'd be surprised if Hazard outscored KDB this week given the fixtures.

I just read some comments a couple of pages back saying how you don’t know a player is going to score 4 more so it’s a pure gamble.

Well. By that logic even doing Matic to Sterling on a FT is a pure gamble.

Even wildcarding is a pure gamble.

    The games a gamble.

    Life’s a gamble.

    Let’s TC matic !!!!!

My comment (assuming it was me you were talking about) was that a gut feeling a player will outscore another by more than four points alone isn't the end of the matter. you need to look at your team for next week too. The central premise is that points on the board are (imo) preferable in GW37 as there is little chance to rectify the -12 I see flying around

I agree with the first sentence but not the second 🙂

Points "on the board" were less for me last week, for example, than if I had bought up the entire City team for -40 😆

I'm your biggest fan Hotdogs and I very reluctantly switched strategies with a heavy heart due to an overdose of injuries in GW33...

Having said that, I'm not sure you've got much of a leg to stand on...as, since GW33, your rank has stagnated (65>68k), whereas despite what I would view as a 'completely disastrous run', over the same period I've charged past you from 117>50k...

I'd hate to think how much further back you'd be if any of my last minute plan making had actually come up trumps... 😉

The big issue since, say GW29, was the way the fixtures for Arsenal, City and Swansea dropped into 37 instead of 34. From GW29 ish onwards I lined up players that I thought would be common to 34 and 35 but it didn’t come off and the fixture allocation killed me, but hey that’s the way it goes.

That said, I dropped just 20k over a disastrous 34 and 35 and reckon I will bounce back this week to get to my highest position this season and a actually my highest position ever ... I am really in competition with myself to finish as high as I can and quite happy with the way it is going 🙂

I did the same thing. Switched back to the WC GW33 strategy on the Friday night due to injuries and the leaked Liverpool Lineup. Went out Friday night, after activating the WC, and then woke up 30 mins before the deadline to desperately try to shuffle some decent picks into my team.

I'm refusing to count up the points I would have got if I stuck to the WC GW36 strategy. I'm pretty sure I lost points already, without even thinking about how many I would have gained over the last 2 GWs 😐 😆

Still, I think it was the right reason to switch. Just got a bit unlucky. And it hasn't been THAT bad 🙂

      What nightmare?

WC last week followed by BB this week could be profitable, but anyone who is forced to play FH this week because they haven't saved their BB or TC is likely to be in big trouble, but it remains to be seen which of the many possible strategies works out best.

You may score well this week, but will it be enough to make up for points lost earlier?

I see you are currently in 86th position in The home stretch which started in GW28, 51 points behind the leader.
And if you were in my Doubles, Blanks & Chips mini-league, which started scoring in GW31, you would currently be in 58th position on 404 points, 37 points behind the leader.
I don't think either of these leaders will be having nightmares about you overtaking them!

Forced to FH this week ? I think some have used that as their strategy, and a pretty good choice too.

We will see what happens in the various leagues but at the end of the day it is the players in your team that is the main driver for all of this.

I am pretty rubbish at FPL and openly admit it ... but I reckon I will catch up quite a few places in those leagues you mention 🙂

98.6% of the top 10k have already used their Free Hit, according to FPL Statistics.

Those who have not played it earlier have made a poor choice in my opinion. They are unlikely to score many more points in DGW37 than those who Bench Boost or select a successful Triple Captain then, will have already suffered from not playing it in GW35, and most of them will also have played their Bench Boost or Triple Captain in a less favourable game-week.

Wildcard in GW36 followed by Bench Boost in DGW37 could work out well, possibly even better than some more popular strategies but that remains to be seen. Strategies involving a Free Hit in DGW37 will almost certainly be less successful and are deservedly less popular.

If I am wrong, then you can bring any such unlikely successes to our attention in next week's Rough With The Smooth.

Not for me to champion a chip strategy that I am not following ... but I certainly wouldn’t call those that FH37 as having made a poor choice ... but at least they actually made a choice for themselves 😉

Joined your doubles and blanks league - climbed from 58th to 31st this week so far, but still 37 behind the (new) leader. More importantly just 24 points off 3rd place.

As you can see, certain teams not set up nicely for the run in will fall away - just like those that led FPL by using their chips early.

Will be an interesting run in 😉

Your FH31, TC34, WC36 and BB37 worked pretty well, as did a number of other alternative strategies.
Yours was fairly similar to Shirin Nizar's, except that Shirin played WC in GW35.

I have seen successful strategies playing FH in GW31, GW34 and GW35, but I haven't seen any that played FH later than that.

I should have played my WC in 35, not doing so was a big mistake and cost me in 34 & 35.

I think people will consider their chip strategies in a bit more detail next season ....

Got 4 problem players in my DGW squad:
    - Mahrez (WHU, ARS)
    - Willian (LIV, HUD)
    - Morgan (WHU, ARS)
    - Tarkowski - (Ars, - )

Mahrez -> Sterling for my FT seems a no-brainer. How many hits would you take to replace the other 3?

-12 looks very justifiable to me but I'm currently only 5 points off 1st in my mini-league..

Willian is the tricky one but given his poor returns / high chance of being benched for at least one of the two fixtures, a move to Arnie, Ramsey seems incredibly tempting for -4.

If Walker is confirmed out i'll almost certainly downgrade him to Tadic so I can bump Morgan up to Danilo.

Yeah that's the rough thinking but reading that Morgan will probably be dropped for both is swaying me towards gambling. Particularly given Leicester's form.

I assume you realise that with -12 you would therefore be 17 pts off the ML leader and you're betting on your replacements outscoring the originals by at least that?

And with that I have possibly written the most incoherent sentence ever written - I salute myself

I don't quite understand how Willian to Arnautovic is worth a hit. Az called it a no brainer on the Scoutcast and many on here are doing that move but if Arnie blanks against United, which he probably will, and Willian starts the Huddersfield game, which I expect him to, it comes down to Arnautovic vs Leicester and Willian vs Huddersfield + 4 points. I wouldn't be confident about getting my points back in that scenario.

1 likely to play both.. another likely to warm the bench. Think it's worth it tbh

I would be very very surprised if Willian doesn't start one of the two games.

West ham will try to win the first game & you can expect Arnie to contribute something
Can't say the same about Willian

          I get that.
What I meant was Arnie is the main threat for hammers. So he's more likely to get the goal or an assist if they score.
Chelsea on the other hand have many players who can contribute to the win.

why you worried about Auba ?

I think I'd be worried about Aub in GW38 if Arsenal get into the EL final, because Wenger could again choose a team that aligns closely to his plans for the EL game. Though I still think Auba is slightly more likely to start in that scenario than not (as he did last time).

But yeah, that's GW38 (and will probably remain hypothetical). I don't think there's reason to worry about him this week. Nailed as far as I'm concerned

Disagree with this due to the short gap between the league game and the final - final is on the Wednesday and the league game on the Sunday. Can see restings galore

nah the EL final is just 3 days after the last league game of the season , so if they do make it the entire first 11 will likely be rested , so that makes Auba probably the most nailed Arsenal player for the rest of the season imo

Should they win tonight (which I'm not expecting, but not impossible), I would think that the Leicester game would be the "dress rehearsal" ahead of the EL final

Yeah, I would think it would be a cross between a dress rehearsal and a chance to rest players.

Last time, there was 4 days until the EL game, and it was treated like a dress rehearsal, besides the inclusion of Auba.

This time would be 3 days. I don't see how that one day less to prepare = rest 11 players 😀

Oh you said the Leicester game. I think the Leicester game would be ripe for rotation. At least as much as in GW38.

Both games will likely have a balance between playing kids and the first XI imo. Different first choice players will need resting or practice in both weeks.

In my world, Auba is more likely to be rested in GW38 than against Leicester. In yours, vice versa. Either way, he's not nailed, but it's possible he starts all three

    Is this worth it?
    gw37: Salah > Sterling (-4)
    gw38: Sterling, Son > Salah, Arnie (-4)

    Current squad for 37:
DDG // Mawson, Azpi, Chilwell // Salah, Mili, Eriksen, Son // Kane (TC), Jesus, Barnes
    Bench: Ryan, Gudmundsson, Lowton, Mariappa

Looks good and would do the Son to Arnie now and take no hit in 38 Son may only place once Arrnie twice in 37

Kane better this week but Jesus stronger I think - Salah obviously better in 38 but surely better to triple in a double ?

"Mourinho reveals he has not been selecting Eric Bailly recently as he is the only Man United centre-half who won’t be involved in this summer’s World Cup"

Would have been useful to mention this 3 weeks ago Jose!

This - you're shipping three decent players who all have DGWs. With rotation, you could end up bringing in fewer minutes

Maybe just Willian - Christ will play 1, and Mawson would need 2 cs probably to make any profit (which is unlikely)
