Double Gameweek 37 continues to surprise and deflate as a resolute Huddersfield Town hold out for an unlikely 0-0 draw at Manchester City to scupper another set of captaincy plans.

It’s a fairly short journey across the Pennines from West Yorkshire to Greater Manchester, and the team coach essentially didn’t stop until it was on the Etihad pitch as manager David Wagner unveiled a 5-3-1-1 formation to try and frustrate the champions’ attacking riches.

The plan worked spectacularly, with City failing to create a single big chance over the 90 minutes.

Huddersfield’s stubborn display delivered another blow for any number of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who had bet the house on City attacking returns.

Those who handed the armband to Spurs’ Harry Kane, or played the Triple Captain chip on him, would have been particularly anxious following the striker’s blank yesterday.

Gabriel Jesus and Raheem Sterling looked primed to teach those managers the error of their ways but ended up with the same minimal output as Kane.

The pair were the two most purchased players for this round of fixtures, brought in by 268,000+ and 199,000+ respectively.

Jesus, who was captained by 5.04% and 32 of the top 100 managers, failed to score for the first time in last five starts. He recorded just two shots on goal, both off target.

Over 75,000 FPL managers also used their Triple Captain chip on him, while Sterling took the armband for 4.79% of FPL managers (including 11 of the top 100) and was the subject of more than 69,000 Triple Captain chips.

Sterling failed to register a single effort on goal and created just one chance for team-mates, recording four touches in the penalty area.

Like Jesus, his form (three goals and seven assists in the previous six) still looks encouraging for the midweek visit of Brighton.

But the worry is that after naming a first-choice XI for the title presentation match, Pep Guardiola might now rest a number of his regulars to turn all those cunning plans into outright disasters.

Sterling and Jesus, along with David Silva and Leroy Sane, were all given the full 90 minutes on Sunday.

The City coach will surely consider Yaya Toure for a starting role given that Wednesday’s fixture will be his last in City colours.

Similarly, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva and even Phil Foden will all be considered for starts against the Seagulls, so we’re now at the mercy – not for the first time – of Guardiola’s penchant for rotation.

At least those who backed the City defence are currently in profit.

Aymeric Laporte was City’s most bought defender for the double, earning 35,000+ new owners, only for Guardiola to end his three-match run in the team by bringing back John Stones to partner Nicolas Otamendi at centre-half.

The Argentinian, with 26.1% ownership, is the most popular defender in FPL and he brought in maximum bonus for a bumper nine-point haul. That took him to 21 bonus points for the season, second only to Cesar Azpilicueta among defenders.

The clean sheet was City’s second in six Gameweeks, which took goalkeeper Ederson to 16 shutouts – one behind David De Gea in the Golden Glove standings.

The stopper looks the most secure starter among the backline for the midweek match, which should cheer his 9.1% ownership on a day of precious little joy further up the pitch.

Huddersfield holding on

A cursory glance at Huddersfield’s final three fixtures (mci che ARS) was all we needed to presume a zero-point return and possible relegation.

And while the side is not out of the mire just yet, the point they laboured for at City means they could lose their last two matches and still survive if results elsewhere go their way.

The wheels on Wagner’s 5-3-1-1 bus didn’t come off today, so it’s highly likely to be driven down to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday and, if required, parked at home to Arsenal for Gameweek 38.

Investing in their backline is not exactly tempting, however, as today’s clean sheet was only their fourth in 15 Gameweeks.

Keeper Jonas Lossl (6.9%) remains their most popular player, but he was benched by 255,000+ (more than half his ownership) for the Etihad siege.

His tenth clean sheet of the season is unlikely to persuade many to reinstate him for Gameweek 38, while the Terrier’s lack of goals – just two in eight Gameweeks now – means that Wagner’s side remains a no-go.

Kane should have scored we last match as well.

Actually I said somewhere in the middle of the season I'll never again get Kane back after he burned me every time. And look now, I even gave him the armband...

Also, I wish I didn't have so much money so I wouldn't get Mustafi in.

No way I will get him next season.

Don't want Salah as well, but Liverpool will score goals again and he will get some again. And his ownership will be crazy.

I am looking for something like:

            4.5 4.5
            6 5 4.5 4.5 4.5
            Salah Eriksen Sterling 6 4.5

I have just read that very long thread that FPL Virg created on here earlier today.
It was well entertaining. He's the most perfect long grass troll that I've ever seen on FFS.
The problem is that he's bit crap at FPL. If he was genuinely good at the game it would hold a bit more gravitas.
As it stands, he now just looks a like a long grass troll who is genuinely deserving of pity.
All of his strategic pillars (lol) and his waffle, waffle, waffletisms count for nothing as he did decidedly sweet fa between GW1 and GW31 anyway.
Another FPL know-it-all that will be consigned to the breadbin like all the others.

I've been trying to put forward an alternative strategy for the doubles and the chips. It would have been the easiest thing in the world to Wildcard in the Gross Willian Son Mahrez template in 32 - I literally could of done it in my sleep - but I wanted to try something different. The debate should centre around which approach was best. To make it about one FPL team's overall rank when this is impacted by 37 individual gameweeks is misguided. I may not have excuted my alternative strategy to perfection but I still think it was the better approach.

Of course the irony of you calling Virg ‘a bit crap’ is that in your 8 full seasons you have only had one higher finish tha Virg’s one and only full season ... and it looks like your first 2 seasons were not up to the elite player status level that Virg has already carved out for himself 😉

Virg may well get a second top 10k finish in his second year ... I believe it took you 5 years to get that? 🙂

Now, if you were to call me a bit crap I would say that would be somewhat understating my ability 🙂

4.5 PPG, same as Gross who is over 1m cheaper. Zaha 7.5 and Gross 7 next season imo.

Think Zaha needs a proper goal scoring striker next to him if he is to challenge for top 5 mids. Donkey Benteke is killing a fair bit of his potential.

Really pleased for Wenger that his last home game was the result he deserved.

Pity he never pressured the board enough to get transfer funds to keep up with the competition in the last 5 years otherwise he'd still be competitive.

That season he didn't buy a player was the 1st time I knew he was done as an elite manager

Honestly, I think the problem at Arsenal has been with the attitude of the suporters for a long time. Easily the most negative set if fans in the prem and that negativity impacts on the players. Just my opinion. Wenger has continued to bring great players to Arsenal who play under a cloud....Sanchez, Lacazette, Aubameyang...blah, blah, blah..

I agree. The supporters are terrible. They groan in disappointment at mistakes, are silent for large periods and never get behind the team when its doing badly.

He did get players in but we've always been 2 or 3 short hence the criticism about not pressuring the board for extra money.

Mou in contrast will ask for more money next season even though he has spent loads already

          1. Dr Dream
            • 13 Years

It's not hard to understand really is it? If you have a squad of players who know in the back of their mind that the supporters think their crap and that the supporters think the manager is crap then that will show on the pitch...it just will...

Mourinho has done exactly the same at Utd with a great looking squad of players....at least half of them now think that their own manager thinks they're crap...How on earth can that end well...

Arsenal need to get a big club attitude from the terraces down to the players because they are a big club who just need a bigger attitude..

It's the very thing Fergie was talking about when he spoke of the "prawn sandwich" supporters at Old Trafford.

Yup, Keane said that and a lot of other things!
                My personal favourite was:

No bigger contrast in football than the attitude of Liverpool and Arsenal fans. Both teams are waiting a long time for their next title (Liverpool longer than Arsenal) and yet how many times do you we see 'pool fans bemoaning their team/manager on here....not very often...

Klopp's been improving Liverpool consistently since joining. Wenger improved Arsenal massively initially but they've been deteriorating for some time. Context's important.

He initially was brilliant, changed everything, found gems, playing amazing football, got winners in his sides etc.

But something happened around the time the likes of Nasri, Arshavin, Podolski etc were arriving. He completely became blind and stubborn about his oen mistakes and what types of player they needed.

Basically non stop signing of weak small wide men / number 10 types when they really needed someone to dominate tge midfield, a keeper, a big lump leader at the back and a striker.

But he just kept signing infinite number of identical type players. All of who were just not determined to win. Ozil was like the epitome of these players all rolled into one.

From a British perspective, that Arsenal team based on 'weak small wide men and n10s' makes no sense, I'd agree. But then young Pep did exactly the same at Barcelona a few years later, and the rest is history (boring tiki taka history, but nonetheless).

I guess what I'm trying to say is that Wenger clearly failed with his later team design, but it wasn't actually such a bad idea.

It's not just that though. City have a few battlers and winners. Its people with a bit of guts. The type who want to ein at all costs. Arsenal just kept getting one's that were fine with being rich and that's all

        2. Dr Dream
          • 13 Years

          It was a great idea.

The fact is that teams are probably far more intimidated playing away to the likes of Palace and Huddersfield than any trip to the Emirates (usually)...Every team that Wenger has put together could be so much better if the fans got just behind them...

Don't agree on Ozil. Wenger should have had a team built around him so he didn't get exposed defensively and a mobile targetman as he is a provider. The fact that he is an important part of the German NT proves this

My Ma won the 1979 Irish Ladies archery and her score was good enough to qualify for the Moscow 80 Olympics.
Unfortunately archery was worth about £7 investment from the Irish Olympic Council back then and it cost about a grand for air fare to Moscow back in those days.

Would people play Gross (Liverpool away) or Gudmundsson (B'mouth at home) in GW38?

Bit more upbeat about my cash ML after Sterling and Silva blank for my rival, who captained the former.

He's now 35 ahead, differentials left to play below:

    Him:
    - Sterling (C)
    - Kane
    - Ayew
    - DSilva
    - Willian
    - Lingard
    - Smalling
    - Davies
    - Maguire
    - Ryan

    Me:
    - Kane (TC)
    - Vardy
    - Sterling
    - Hazard
    - Son
    - Arnie*
    - Dummett
    - Cresswell
    - Naughton*

Chances of me clawing back the 35 point gap?

    Thanks

True. Think I'd fancy my chances if:

        - Sterling is benched
        - Arnie is fit
        - Naughton has recovered
        - Son starts
        - Hazard starts

Just not sure if all those happen though

That devil is not good at this game. O'bameyang has been hugely prolific since arriving and he has a DGW to boot.

If he had only one match that would make sense

I sold him the week before to get Kane in for that WAT fixture as the devil presumed (wrongly) that he was the best captain pick! Should have stuck with my gut feeling and went without Kane! Ahwell, the joys of FPL.

Take away that power front three and Liverpool are a very poor looking team on paper. Klopp really has overacheived this season getting them to the UCL final.

Completely. Salah has carried them through.

Without him and Coutinho they would have been upper mid table.

Yeah and I would argue that Firminho has been more important for them, if he had got injured at Christmas, no way LIV would be top 4 or in the later stages of UCL!

      Lol are you serious?

Take away sterling De Bruyne and Sane, where would City be?

Take away Lukaku Sanchez Pogba where would Utd be?

Take away kane Eriksen and son, where would Tottenham be.

Look at the players in that Liverpool squad and tell me how many would make the City, MUN and even Spur's squads? Both GKs, Lovren, Klavan Moreno, Solanke, Ings, Wijnaldum, Clyne, Milner. Burnely wouldnt even want them to stretch their squad for EL next season lol.
