Our World Cup planning picked up pace yesterday after FIFA launched their official Fantasy game for this summer’s tournament.

The discussion on site, as well as Hot Topics and Members tables, mainly focussed on Russia 2018 as Fantasy managers start to firm up their plans ahead of next Thursday’s big kick-off.

There was also chat on the Premier League’s decision to announce a winter break from 2019/20 earlier today, while the World Cup Friendlies Community Tournament approaches it’s mid-point.

The Hottest Topics

After Jose Mourinho made his first move in the transfer market, we pondered Fred’s potential impact on Manchester United, also canvassing thoughts on your club’s transfer dealings so far.

Stoichkov#8 helped us look forward to the World Cup as round two of the Community Tournament for World Cup friendlies kicked off last weekend.

McNulty also gave us a helping hand in our quest for World Cup Fantasy points, posting the odds for teams remaining unbeaten in the group stage.

And G-Whizz was another to aid our defensive strategy with a look at World Cup 2018 clean sheet odds,Tommytour was keen to discuss transfer plans for the FIFA game.

FFFrøg mulled over the ever-crucial captaincy strategy for the FIFA game, assessing how best to spread captaincy options to maximize chances of a big haul.

Earlier today, KunTheMan also sparked a very handy assessment of the best bargain options available and Hodor offered a new perspective on squad selection, suggesting that strength on the bench can be overlooked.

Finally, our editor, David, also updated us with the news that the Premier League will introduce a winter break in 2019/20 as other, including Mark, gave their view on the potential domestic impact.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

Members Tables

Members Tables this week featured one of our own, with J0E looking at World Cup Goalscorers from the World Cup qualification data, as well as World Cup Talismen, players who are the most involved in their team’s attack.

Elsewhere, FPLVirgin looked at World Cup teams’ chances of getting clean sheets.

Our Members Tables can be found in the Members Only area in the Stats Tables section.

The Community Tournaments

Stoichkov#8’s World Cup Friendlies Community Tournament hit the halfway point on Thursday with the conclusion of Gameweek 4, with Gameweek 5 not yet complete at the time of writing.

At the halfway point, Rony1993 has pulled seven points ahead of a chasing pack, which includes five managers who are split by only four points.

There’s work to be done for those below sixth, but with it so close at the top the use of differentials could break the table up significantly.

FFFrøg has started a Community Tournament for the World Cup Fantasy game, and is taking applications now.

Community members will join a nation and play as a team against others. The game will follow the group stages and then the knockout format of the real tournament, with 96 spots initially available.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet, or head to head competition at geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

It does look good. I don't love J Rod though think it's better to get two mid-priced mids instead of JRod and a 2 point fodder.

Looks like your plan is to WC after week 1? How about invest in some Moroccans? They conceded 0 goals in qualifying, have a great defense and Ziyech is quality (on every set piece as well).

      J. Rod > Ziyech frees up 2.0 to upgrade one of your fodders or if to upgrade Greizmann to say Messi.

Suarez could assist as score, and on penalties as well. 5 goals and 8 assist in 13 games in the qualifiers.

Cavani scored 10 goals in 15 games, but only 1 assist.

Would be a better pick if Sigurdsson didn't play IMO. Gudmundsson was a good FPL pick because of his set pieces at Burnley and he won't have a big share of them with Sigurdsson on the pitch. Sigurdsson will be on set pieces for Iceland.

Coutinho plays more in front (either as a winger or no 10) plus had a better goal + assist count during qualification. Worth the 0.5 more imo

Everything about this statement is incorrect. Coutinho plays deeper. Paulinho scored and assisted more during World Cup qualification. Coutinho is arguably more expensive purely based on reputation alone.

It's tempting for me too, allows a 0.5 upgrade elsewhere as you've said. I've compared Werner and Jesus in the stats - there is only one winner. This is what has stopped me from making the move so far.

possibly, possibly. im at a crossroads as to whether go for a strong 15, or strong 11 in a 5-2-3. After playing CL fantasy for the last 2 years (Which has the same sort of format) im leaning towards going for just a strong XI and bench fodder. Relying on mediocre players to return points became a struggle. Of course both ways could do well

    Pickford
    Danilo Godin Meunier Sidibe
    Paulinho Isco Muller
    Jesus Lukaku Werner

Decent enough right? (dont think i want a strong bench)

Needs a captain for the last day but looks great otherwise.

Cheers! im hoping by then I've had a decent captain haul 😀 Might put Lewa back in though. We'll see

The team looks OK except having a strong bench is pretty much essential

you're definitely right in saying having a strong bench is important, but i'm not sure if that should come at the expense if having a good XI?

Agree with Prof Bear - that could be J Rod or Lewa (as you were previously on). I'm not doubling up on attacks for now until we can see the form teams and who are just 1-0ing (I know coverage is a myth blah blah)

yeah i'll definitely consider those 2 for that last day captaincy pick. Feel like its risky to twist for a captaincy on the last day though, i'll just be happy with 6+ for most GWs. Although thats probably not the best attitude to have if you intend on winning the whole thing!

Damn that's a really nice team.

First one that's made me rethink mine a bit. I like the strong defense and solid spread throughout. You have a 4.5m defender on the bench right and then 4.5m mids?

sadly its only a 4.0 mil defender, and 4.5mil mids. Having an extra playing defender on the bench would be useful, so I might look at trying to earn an extra .5 somewhere from the starting XI. Cheers!

          Downgrade Pickford > Caballero.

          That's your 0.5m.

Not that keen on Paulinho if I'm honest but it looks good otherwise. A solid 8/10.

cheers! It seems Paulinho is quite productive in an offensive sense for Brazil so im willing to take the plunge.

Yes. The alternative is Fagner who is barely capped.

Cavani - Hummels or Mbappe - Kimmich?

How does Mertens compare to Lukaku/Hazard in terms of goal involvement for Belgium?

I don't get the Sanchez/Ndiaye love. If I'd go with 4.5mid I'd pick one that I can actually sub off.

If you were subbing them on, it'd only be for a 2-pointer - does it really matter which way round?

Excuse my ignorance but why is Godin in so many teams? Anything specific other than fixtures?

Nailed on, and the fixtures are there for CS's. I think Varela is worth considering but there has been talk of a knock.

Is Varela a starter? 4.5 price tag makes me think he’s not?

Marcelo worth 1.0 more than Danilo?

I'm with you on this, not touching Marcelo at 6.5 when Danilo is 5.5.
