some group D lineup predictions, essentially bits that differ from the above.

croatia: kramaric to actually be the most nailed CF, albeit that might mean playing at RW when mandzukic finally looks 100%.
corluka doubtful for the opener. struggles with pace and was really exposed against senegal, first game is nigeria. he's a difficult one as he was never available to the new manager in qualifying. due to the nature of that injury (ruptured achilles) i think it's understandable he's been given as much time as possible in recent friendlies to re-prove himself. i personally wouldn't read it as a sign that he's a nailed option. the back 4 from the playoff games looks a very viable option.

iceland: at least for the opener them to go 4411, hallfredsson into CM and gylfi AM (other sigurdsson benched). would predict the 4411 for every game tbh barring nigeria.

argentina: macsherano to start. as of now the only doubts seem to be the CF spot, the CB spot alongside otamendi and the RB spot. and as of now the front runners in those positions looks like being aguero, rojo (slow news days since the lanzini hammer-blow mean his blisters are the biggest story) and salvio shoe-horned into RB.
fabricio bustos isn't in the squad!

nigeria: in relative terms they are a mess. a fairly solid bet for 4th spot imo and that's largely due to the coach clearly having no idea even now what his best XI and best formation is (also because when victor moses takes your set-pieces you have a problem). the impression i get is the coach is fairly set on a 433/4231 but has had to reluctantly entertain the 352 because of the dramatic change within the england match suddenly backing up the 4-2 win over argentina in november. the sheer disappointment of the last friendly however may have killed the chance of the change. long story short i'd say the only real dilemma they have is who partners mikel in the middle 3 (current drama revolves around onazi, with questions of the manager faking an injury for him after a training ground fight with mikel).

vrsalijko, lovren, vida, strinic - badelj, rakitic - kramaric, modric, perisic - manzukic.

saevarsson, r.sigurdsson, arnason, magnusson - j.gudmundsson, gunnarsson, hallfredsson, bjarnasson - gylfi - finnbogason.

salvio, otamendi, rojo, tagliafico - mascherano, biglia - meza, messi, di maria - aguero.

shehu, troost-ekong, balogun, idowu - ndidi, mikel, obi - moses, ighalo, iwobi.

lots of permutations for croatia potential lineup, you could also throw brozovic in there too as a potential DM option

nice catch on the argentina lineup

yeah had brozovic to start alongside rakitic until the last friendlies. the flexibility of brozovic, kramaric, mandzukic and rakitic makes them very hard to predict, albeit a strength in reality

    Muslera*1 ( Halldorson)
    Cacares, Meunier, Danilo, Hactor (Dalsgaard)
Hazard, J Rod, Golovin (Otayf, Boussoufa)
    Neymar, Cavani*2, Lukaku

*1 - Should i go for another keeper as i have Cacares? I can downgrade Golovin and upgrade to any starting predicted finals team keeper.

*2 Is Timo Werner a better choise than Cavani or do i switch in third match depending form

*Ex - Is Hazard and Lukaku too much? (Hazard is a midfielder in my game) All the wingers are still mids (D. Silva, Alli, Sterling, Isco, Moses - but noe Moeller who is fwd.)

Seen a lot of comments about swapping captain each day as a strategy if your captain blanks, but the rules say you lose your captain bonus (double points) if you do this. So I wouldn't be planning it as such, it's more of a back-up option.

But I've read people saying they will captain a Saudi Arabia player tonight as a punt. It's a massive punt if you then have to move the armband to a big hitter and forego the the double points.

    Am I missing something?

If your captain blanks then you have nothing to lose by switching it

You have to plan to do this.

Give yourself a goal for captain points and keep swapping until you achieve it.

But I'm right that you lose the double points bonus each time?

I get that you will go for it if your captain blanks, but you should def be giving the armband to a player you trust first, not just some wild punt. Ideally your captain score a goal, double points, and you leave it that way. It would be madness to captain a pure punt and sacrifice double points on a big hitter.

      • 9 Years

You lose double points for player you removed armbrand. Not from armbrand itself. So you have 6 tries to get it right if you have big hitter every day.

Really? Okay then that is totally different to what I thought. No wonder people want to have a crack at a new captain every day.

    4. Neetan

Saudi player gets 2 points (4 as captain) - you're not happy with this score as your captain so switch the captain to a Spanish player.

In doing so, you only get 2 points total for the Saudi player, but have will gain double of whatever the Spanish player gets.

If the Spanish doesn't get enough points to satisfy you can go for another player and so forth until you're happy with the points total.

If you thought you lost the double points if you changed captain, then under your theory putting the armband on a new player would serve no purpose whatsoever!

I've personally switched Pavard to Varela, and a disproportionate amount of that decision was likely down to the FFFrog effect

Also, Senegal keepers have uncertainty around them - different sources predict different starters, and they've played an equal number of friendlies recently - just a heads up!

They seem to be rather solid defensively but they do have some off games. Allowed two to Hungary twice and five to France last world cup but apart from that they've been very solid defensively against all teams, not just recently but throughout the last eight years (beat Spain 1-0 in 2010 wc).

    Salah on the ball
Mohamed Salah trained with the ball for the first time since the injured he sustained in the UEFA Champions League final on Wednesday. Friday, 15 June is shaping up to be a significant day for Salah. Not only could it be his World Cup debut, should he be cleared to participate by the Pharaoh’s medical staff, the day also marks his 26thbirthday and the start of Eid al-Fitr, the holiday that celebrates the conclusion of Ramadan.

Time zones are causing me a headache.

The Fifa WC game has kick off times in CET. Google says "There is no time difference between Central European Time and United Kingdom" says its 01:45 in both regions.

So why does BBC have the game kicking off at 4PM and on the fantasy site 5PM.

    What am I missing?

It's currently BST, google actually says "There is no time difference between British Summer Time and Central European Time".

Not sure that explains the difference in what they're saying though.

      1. Fred54
        • 10 Years
        7 years, 6 months ago

Yep, we are most definitely in BST in the UK and apparently that means its same time as CET.

But from experience, mainland Europe is always at least one hour ahead of UK anyway, we put our clocks backwards/forwards same time, so time difference is always the same. Not sure why Google is so wrong here.

But Varela is a decent replacement and for a decent side with decent fixtures, so he ticks all the boxes I guess.
