Midfielder Aleksandr Golovin (£6.5m) was the Fantasy star of the show as Russia thrashed Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the opening World Cup fixture.

He scored the fifth and final goal for the hosts as they registered their first win in eight matches, assisting another two of his nation’s strikes for a 13 point haul.

Substitute Denis Cheryshev (£5.5m) was not far behind Golovin in the match, scoring twice and amassing 12 points.

Budget option Yuri Gazinskiy (£4.5m) opened the scoring in the 12th minute, heading past Al-Maiouf from Golovin’s cross in the aftermath of a set-piece.

It should come as no surprised that Russia took the lead in the air against the shortest side at this summer’s World Cup.

That vulnerability furthers the appeal of Uruguay defender Diego Godin (£5.5m), a great threat from set-pieces, who scored four goals in World Cup qualifying.

Indeed, Oscar Tabarez’s side netted more goals from set-plays in qualifying than any other nation from South America or Europe.

The likes of Mohamed Salah (£8.5m), Luis Suarez (£10.5m) and Edinson Cavani (£9.5m) will all likely be looked at as options for later Group Stage rounds accordingly.

There was disappointment for Alan Dzagoev (£7.0m), selected by two percent of World Cup Fantasy managers, who was forced off with a hamstring injury in the 24th minute.

His replacement, Cheryshev, was the scorer of the second goal after Russia successfully mounted a breakaway attack in the 43rd minute.

Roman Zobnin (£5.5m) fed the substitute, whose excellent first-touch took him past two defenders allowing him to slam the ball high into the net unchallenged.

Alexandr Samedov (£7.5m), involved in 11 goals during Russia’s 20 matches in the build-up to the tournament, look bright but was substituted in the 64th minute with just playing and clean sheet points to his name.

Next to leave the field for Russia was Fedor Smolov (£8.0m) in the 71st minute. Artem Dzyuba (£8.0m) was the man who came on for him, scoring with his first touch of the match – a header from another Golovin cross.

Cheryshev scored his second late-on after a knock-down from Dyzuba was rifled into the net from outside the box.

After being fouled on the edge of the box in stoppage time, Golovin, who had been booked minutes before, took the free-kick placing it perfectly to Al-Maiouf’s left to cap off a memorable victory for the hosts.

With a fixture against Egypt up next, Golovin and Cheryshev may soak up some transfer activity in the coming days.

TEAMS

RUSSIA (4-2-3-1): Akinfeev; Fernandes, Kutepov, Ignashevich, Zhirkov; Gazinskiy, Zobnin, Golovin, Dzagoev (Cheryshev 28’), Samedov (Kuzyayev 64’); Smolov (Dzyuba 70’).

SAUDI ARABA (4-5-1): Al-Maiouf; Alburayk, Os.Hawsawi, Om.Hawsawi, Al-Shahrani; Otayf (Al-Muwallad 63’), Al-Dawsari, Al-Faraj, Al-Jassam, Al-Shehri (Bahbir 74’), Al-Sahlawi

Could I sell my Russian defenders for new players playing in this round of fixtures, and keep their points, and also get the new players' points?

Or is it done round by round?

Yes. You can sell them game by game. You should. The number of transfers is ridiculous.

It's mental. That's why my brother and I avoid it for our head to head games. Far too reliant on being online an hour before every game.

In terms of strategy and planning, it's a game for the very best, most elite fantasy managers. So many ways you can play the group stages. It's mind blowing.

how are people approaching it? i've set up with 9 players to hopefully keep (barring injuries/dropped/suspensions), and two slots in midfield and attack with 5.5m and 7m allocated so i can always sub in the prime striker or mid for each game

It’s a bit late now I’ve realised the counter argument for those saying using max captain in the group stage is bad because we can change so many times.

Those stuck with “awkward” captain scores of say 10-12. You could miss some great value from your heavy hitters before the template forms.

    Meh. 2022 I’ll be prepared !

10 is a bit awkward in the first two days. 12 is surely enough to stick with.

But, to me, the obvious time to max cap is QFs and later when you will have loads of players at the same time.

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 1 month ago

I'd stick with 10 quite happily unless I had a 12.0 forward to come. Which is part of the reason I bought no players over 9.0! 😀

            10 doubled to 20
            12.0m
            9.0m

I'm guessing Dave means 12 doubled to 24. That's what I took it to mean 🙂

You can say that about any stage of the tournament really. But the difference is, you'll have fewer chances in the latter stages.

If it's the semi-finals and you captain a 2 pointer in game one. You're shooting in the dark for game 2 with 6 options for captain.

Mine was simple I couldn’t decide who to captain and have 4 or 5 great options and the higher scores are generally in the group stages, games will be tighter later on in tournament and closer to call

          • 9 Years

Nah that's not right though. Was exactly my thoughts. But chances are much higher you will get it wrong later on than the 5/6 goes you have at it now. You captain Jesus in a semi or final for instance, but your goalie gets a penalty save and a clean sheet. Anybody playing max cap then will kill you

Just realised that the player list displays Goals Scored, not Points, so you have to click on each player to find out how many points they got. Plus you can't sort by Points either, just by Price, % Selected, Goals, Cleanies etc. Bit annoying, but at least I finally found where to make the transfers! Haha

People around the world going to bed and going to work, leading busy lives. You'd think they'd want to have the daily adjustments open for as long as posible so people don't get frustrated that they have no control. I don't really see why they can't have it open 24/7 tbh, besides they fact it might confuse a few people, but it's confusing as it is! 😀

I had Zhirkov in my team until very late but ditched him. If I'd have got a Russian back it would have been him with his set piece duties. Did he actually get any points?

I didn't see him mentioned on here during the match...so maybe not. Doesn't feel like I missed out then because no chance I would have had one of the others.

If you sub out Golovin for Eriksen you dont get any of Golvin's points.

If you had Golovin as captain, keep him in your first 11, but move the captaincy to Eriksen, you lose the double points you had for Golovin and instead get double points for Eriksen

In the Telegraph game, if you now transfer out Golovin for Eriksen, you keep Golovin's points.

          Not sure on other games

      No.

Sub in Eriksen for a low scoring player in your 11 (I.e. a 1 or 2 pointer)

You can switch your captain to anyone in your 11 yet to play, but you will lose your 'double' pts from golovin

If you sub out Golovin, you will lose all his pts.

If you mean TRANSFER Golovin out, then yes. If you mean to SUSTITUTE him out, then no.

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years

But it seems you mean to sustitute Eriksen on for Golovin, so no. But you can transfer Golovin out, sub Eriksen on for somebody else (not Golovin) and therefore keep Golovin's points this week (because he's still in your Round 1 XI).

yes ofc talking about transferring not subbing. Surely if i transfer out golovin and put in eriksen, agreed i would keep golovins points but surely i wouldnt get eriksens round 1 points?

You're right, you wouldn't. If you look around the screen, you'll see that the team (and transfer) is for Round 2, not Round 1.

so help me out here guys, hypothetical scenario

I have kaku on bench and lewa starting. Lewa blanks and gets 2 pts.

I sub him out for kaku who plays next day but unfortunately he gets a knock and doesn't feature at all. Am I getting back lewa's or any other player's pts from the bench in an auto sub kind of scenario.

in short you get zilch, that's why I wouldn't rely too much on autosub.

No, In McD's, once you make a manual substitution, automatic substitions no longer apply. However, in the scenario above, Lewa plays after Kaku. So you couldn't do it anyway.

If you (c) Kaka and he blanks and you move the captaincy to Lewa then that's your final shot - if he also blanks, tough luck.

Golovin (C) may start to rival my St Ledger (C) from 4 years ago. I love tournament fantasy, mainly cause I never know what I am doing but pull some right beauties out of the bag.
