The last World Cup quarter-final takes place this evening in Sochi as hosts Russia face Croatia – with the winners to face England in a semi-final tie on Wednesday night.

Luka Modric‘s (£9.1m) meteoric ownership rise has continued apace: having been the most-bought player of the previous round, the Croatian attracted investment from a further 200,000 Fantasy managers ahead of the quarter-final deadline on Friday. Only Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe were more popular picks this time.

The Real Madrid midfielder, of course, blanked in the last-16 tie against Denmark after his 116th-minute penalty was saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

However, coach Zlatko Dalic has since confirmed that Modric will remain on spot-kick duties for his country after praising the talismanic playmaker’s strength of character in the subsequent penalty shoot-out.

Modric’s ownership of 46.9% dwarfs that of any other player’s on show this evening, with Dejan Lovren (£5.1m) the next-most owned asset in the Croatian squad. Just over a quarter of McDonald’s FIFA managers have drafted the Liverpool defender into their squads.

Goalkeeper Danijel Subasic (£5.5m), owned by 16% of Fantasy bosses, is another popular route into the Croatian backline that has kept two clean sheets in the 2018 World Cup.

Midfielder Ivan Rakitic (£8.5m) is the only other Croatia player with a double-digit ownership.

The midfield is also where the bulk of the investment in the Russian squad lies. Denis Cheryshev (£5.6m), Iury Gazinsky (£4.3m) and Aleksandr Golovin (£6.5m) all have ownership above 10%, though Golovin was the only one of this trio to start in the last-16 victory over Spain. Cheryshev returns to the Russia side this evening.

Igor Akinfeev (£5.0m), who racked up nine saves in that success over the 2010 World Cup winners, features in 5.3% of Fantasy squads.

There is surprisingly little investment (2.9%) in Artem Dzyuba (£8.1m), Russia’s bustling centre-forward who has three goals and an assist to his name in this tournament already.

Russia XI (4-2-3-1): Akinfeev; Fernandes, Ignashevich, Kutepov, Kudryashov; Zobnin, Kuzyaev; Samedov, Golovin, Cheryshev; Dzyuba

Croatia XI (4-2-3-1): Subasic; Vrsaljko, Vida, Lovren, Strinic; Rakitic, Modric; Rebic, Kramaric, Perisic; Mandzukic

We're weak down the flanks. They attack down the flanks. Must admit, I worry too.

Would have preferred Russia with their 2 STs v our 3 CBs.

Our best attackers are our wing backs. Nullify the centre to allow them forward.

I think 2 ST would have confused our CBs, and Russia have a character which England can only pretend to emulate. An ordinary good side in Croatia might be easier to deal with than an unpredicatable fighting Russian side, maybe.

Russia sit so deep that the strikers would have been isolated anyway. By the time they get support, our wingbacks are back in position. We saw it against Sweden. We dominated the centre, with our 3 CMs v 2CMs. We can't do that against Croatia.

Vertonghen has no attacking threat, better options at his price.

You are breaking one of the cardinal rules of fantasy football by picking a defensive midfielder.
You have picked two of them Neves and Romeu.

Defensive midfielders do not get many points usually and more often get booked a lot.
Daniels may take pens better pick then steve cook
Leicester have bad fixtures might want to reconsider Maguire.

If it's a straight choice, no other consequences in your team, then Trippier is still the golden choice, despite the others actually getting returns 😀 I already have Trippier, Maguire and Stones in defence, and probably shouldn't add to it (though I'd like Pickford!)

Also gotta consider Rossaldino's point below about rotation if England are knocked out. Young would likely rotate to Rose, but the same can be said of Trippier. Perhaps Young is most at risk of losing his place for both game, whereas Tripper is nailed for one. Likewise, if football's coming home, Trippier is still more nailed for both games.

    Thoughts on WC keeper selection.

If you are purchasing a keeper or two, one strategy would be to pick one from a team you think will win, and one from a team you think will lose, but from different days. That way, if you are correct, you again have a keeper on both days in the final round.

To streamline this strat, you could pick the player you think will lose from the first game and the player you think will win from the second. That way, you can shift the loser to the winner if you are correct. The loser keeper will then also play first in the final round (though your predictions may change by this point).

Feel free to correct me if that actually makes no sense 😀

One point Deulofail...your losing keeper may not play in the 3rd place play-off as managers may give second string the opportunity

Hmm good point. Any thought on which teams would most likely utilise another keeper in this situation? I'd agree in Englan's case, because there was a huge debate about who should be number 1, but this isn't the case for all the teams

Probably right but if I was manager of any of the teams I would not worry about 3rd place - its rather meaningless to any of the current SF teams. If Nigeria, Tunisia or Russia had goth there it may be more of an issue - certainly Russia. But I think all the losing teams would play a second string goalie

So, considering Rossaldino's point, it actually seems more sensible to pick 2 players you think will win, so you have a higher chance of one nailed keeper in the final.

Then the optimum result would be for one of them to be knocked out yet still play in the playoff.

Agree - that gives you at least 1 active keeper for final round

is it worth a hit to get 2 out of these 3 as cant field a full 11 due to meunier suspension?
Pick one from these if no hits?
    A)subasic
    B)fellaini or 7 mil mid
    C) vertonghen or lucas hernandez or stones(have tripps and magu)

According to my fantasy football world cup team with my five transfers left for the final:
I will be shouting for France and England so I won't have to take any points hits.

You get an additional 5 transfers in the final round, but the number of teams stays the same. Will you still be unable to make it to 11 or 15 players?

Well I thought about that and tried to set the team up in a way where I could get an eleven with five transfers after the semi finals.
I currently have 12 players plus the suspended muiner.

        Unbelievably I have gone:five english!
        four french
        two Belgians
        two Croatians

If both France and England lose I am snookered though

Why Snookered? They play again in the final round. You'll just have to worry about rotation. Keep Munier. Use 5 transfers now and no more than 2 hits, if any, so that 5 transfers would hypothetically bring you up to 13-15 players for the final round.

Yeah just copped on that all four teams play in the final round (my old logic does not apply) so I am sorted.

It seems almost unfair that players are allowed to bench low priced players like inui and leave them them there.
Frees up a lot of funs

Too heavy on England and Belgium here? Bringing in 5 players in caps:

    Courtois
    MAGUIRE, TobyA, Trippier, Lovren, VARANE
    KDB, Modric, Lingard
    KANE, GRIEZMANN, Lukaku

Could afford Pogba or Rakitic for one of my non playing mids, even with Pavard in for Varane

Doesn't that negate the point? He was so far behind he felt he had to make a desperate move in which only luck could save him? And it did.

If you have 5 free transfers I wouldn't take a hit but I would bring in either Fellaini or Chadli and not waste effort on second goalie. I suspect clean sheets will be hard to come by now
