A trio of Croatian differentials were the Fantasy winners on Wednesday night as they emerged victorious from a World Cup semi-final with England.

None of those involved in Croatia’s goals had more than six percent ownership, while the highly-owned Three Lions options were left disappointed.

We’ve got all the goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from match 62 of this World Cup.

ENGLAND 1-2 CROATIA

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS:

  • Ivan Perisic (£8.5m) – 9 points
  • Kieran Trippier (£5.5m) – 7 points
  • Mario Mandzukic (£8.9m) – 5 points
  • Sime Vrsaljko (£5.5m) – 5 points

Ivan Perisic (£8.5m) was the stand-out Fantasy star on Wednesday as he scored and assisted in Croatia’s World Cup semi-final win.

He latched onto Sime Vrsaljko’s (£5.5m) 68th minute cross to level the match, and it was him whose header was converted by Mario Mandzukic (£8.9m) in extra-time.

Kieran Trippier (£5.5m) was the only England player to register Fantasy returns after he gave the Three Lions a fifth-minute lead with an excellent free-kick.

Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Raheem Sterling (£8.9m) both had chances to kill the game off in the first-half but they couldn’t convert.

Croatia managed the match expertly in the second-half and extra-time especially, asserting control in midfield and pegging England’s wide players back.

In extra-time John Stones (£5.9m) had a 99th minute header cleared off the line by Vrsaljko and Kane’s back-post headed chance went wide.

Despite the fact that England will meet Belgium in the third/fourth place play-off on Saturday, Kane and Jesse Lingard (£7.5m) are among the most sold players for the final Gameround.

101,000+ managers have removed Kane, who still leads the race for the Golden Boot while Lingard has been moved on by 67,000+.

Croatian talisman and penalty taker Luka Modric (£9.1m) has now risen to 51.2 percent ownership, while Dejan Lovren (£5.0m) remains in 24.6 percent of teams despite the fact he has not kept a clean sheet since Gameround 2.

ENGLAND XI (3-1-4-2): Pickford; Maguire, Stones, Walker (Vardy 112’); Henderson (Dier 97’); Young (Rose 90’), Alli, Lingard, Trippier; Sterling (Rashford 74’), Kane.

CROATIA XI (4-1-4-1): Subasic; Strinic (Pivaric 95’), Vida, Lovren, Vrsaljko; Brozovic; Perisic, Rakitic, Modric (Badelj 119’), Rebic (Kramaric 101’); Mandzukic (Corluka 115’).

Playing the fixtures in defense. All four have decent opening fixtures, are beautifully priced and also contribute in the final third.

You may be right. Will try to look at other 4.5 options to replace those two. Enough this year to fill those gaps. Any thoughts on the rest of the team?

              Is Stephens the Brighton guy?

I'm a big fan of the team. I suppose it comes round to what you are looking to do in the game I won all my mini leagues and Finnished top 11k last season and never signed a defender or keeper over 5.0. I know that's not the best rank but it's not the worst and I had a lot of fun doing it this way

Cover's Deulofeu in GWs 4, 5 & 7 if you get both, but I'm not sure I'd want to start him in general. Also 5.5 might be a bit much for a first sub when I could get a 5.0 or 4.5 and upgrade a cheap defender for more reliable bench value. We'll see 🙂

Today's news makes me think Seri could boost Sess's prospects, but a tad too much until I see him in the PL. At the same price I'm marginally more in favour of punting on Jota.

Light strike-force is unorthodox but could be inspired.
      But ....
Choose ONE GK and have a 4m benchfodder.
Son will be missing for a LONG time.
Mahrez will be introduced gradually and not at the start of the season.

Regarding GK, this is why I favour Pickford and Stekelenburg.

For £4m you have Pickford's handcuff. If Pickford is rested to start the season Stek will play.

We should ask a question where we will cut to make our teams. So will you go:

    A) light def

    C) cheap 2 playing mids
    D) only Mo as heavy hitter in mid
    E) 2 x 7.0 strikers

None of them, really. At the moment going with a front line of Aguero (possibly Auba from GW3) - Zaha - Kamara, obvs playing just two-up-front ...
...and that frees up the funds for a nice, balanced squad.

Thinking 442 for the start specially if Bailly is nailed & Coleman is a wing back.

I’m not liking the 2 7m stiker option or 2 cheap mids. There could be a lot of value in the 5.5-6m defenders bracket.

      1. fattfattygavgav

Sort of impossible to answer. Categorising positions and methods of techniques to save money is pretty needless when we only have to keep track of 15 players imo. It's a template/structure mentality, assuming our teams will basically be the same without Mo.

You can "save" money in every one of your 15 slots by choosing a player you think is better value than his alternatives in that slot or an alterantive combinations of players. For example, getting Wilson to save 1.0 on Zaha (or 3.5 on Firmino) does not fit into your categories. Nor does having one permium defender instead of two, two instead of three etc. Generalisations you can make from your questions will ultimately reduce the quality of your decisions in FPL imo, sorry 🙂

Looks good to me - think Tomkins or Daniels is your best bet for the 4.5 slot. Or just find someone who rotates pretty well with Southampton.

Redmond a bit of a punt but so are all the attacking 5.5 mids really. Not much between them.

      Not bad but a few questions I'd be asking;

      TAA might rotate with Clyne.

Not sure on Redmond, prefer Delofeu but go with your gut.

Yeah guess that was my compromise for having a strong defence. Originally had Jota/Richarlison + Tarkowski but switched to Mendy + Deulofeu & liked that better.

I may still switch back but I love the idea of Mendy!

If you're intent on going Salah-less, I think you can do better. Don't think Mane or Sanchez are individually very good value for money, and the midfield is very weak aside from those two. There is a lot of value to be had in midfield - I'd be looking at getting at least one of Ramsey/Mkhi, Siggy, Lamela, Jota etc.- even if you get the wrong one you've got room to manoeuvre. I get that you'll be playing 4-3-3, but I still think the cash can be better spread.

I really can't see a reason to get Sanchez - the only backing I've seen people give is that they've got a hunch he could do well and he'll start with people at the world cup - but he'll start anyway!

Also I'd rather have Salah, of course

Yeah fair comments - it does hinge on Sanchez a bit.

I'm looking at him as the punt option for GWs 1 + 2 in particular - and think he's on pens? But if he fails, it's an easy enough move from him to some of those mids you mention - particularly the Arsenal boys once their MCI/che games are done. Or maybe even Sane / Dilva if they're starting.

Agreed with this. I currently have a Salah-less team, and the last place I'd spend the money is on Sanchez.

That said, Lookman will cover Deulofeu's poor fixtures nicely assuming he's a starter, so maybe finding a way to upgrade Zaha to Firmino by downgrading Sanchez and perhaps Mane too. (Having no Salah doesn't make Mane a better option).

Otherwise experiment with a 4-3-4 because you might not need to save money by using a defender in your XI

Sanchez could very a great very short term punt, if Lukaku and Hazard rest post-world cup.

What's Hazard got to do with it? Is it this flexible/structure-type thinking that one can be swapped with the other? If so, you have to really, really want Hazard for this to be a strong justification for buying Sanchez 🙂

Sanchez is a lot of money. Sure he's 2.5 less than Salah, but that's not much considering how much you could save by getting a player who is likely to be better value than Sanchez. If you get D. Silva, for example, you get an extra 4.5 million to upgrade the team and really make it better than the Salah teams.

All depends on Sanchez's value though. If Graham thinks he's worth it, I'm not going to try any harder than this to talk him out of it. Good for him for doing what he thins is best 🙂

Personally, looking at the best defenders from last season, and the gap opening up between the top 5/6 and the rest, and the value available in defenders (seen a lot of posts outlining that often 4/5 at the back teams are strong), I've opted to go for a defence of 4 premiums and a 4.0, with the aim of playing 4 at the back, and would strongly advocate focusing on premiums if you can afford it.

Of those two, I'd go B, but not massively keen on Burnley defenders or Cedric myself.

I really enjoy RMTs, but I wish people would put a bit more thought and detail their thoughts processes when sharing their squads. The thing that makes this site so useful is the discussion between people - if a few more people gave their reasoning for certain picks it could start a lot more debate, instead of just a page of squads. Personally I'll be much more willing to respond in detail to a RMT if I have something to start with other than just give them some names.

      And their replies 🙂

It really grinds my gears when people stick their RMTs here and then walk away from the computer, never to be seen again. I go ahead and write them an essay about how I see the pros and cons of their masterpiece, only to end up feeling used and abused 🙁 *sobs*

In general, it annoys me when people here don't reply after you've taken the time to reply to them. Even just with a "thanks". It can be tedious to do it constantly, but some posters have long histories of taking the community for granted 🙂

😉 And yeah I agree with everything you say.

Another thing that I thing people would get people a more positive outcome is if they posted the team they've settled on after having done loads of tinkering and thinking, after taking every player and position and price into consideration, instead of just making a huge amount of squads and posting them all without much thought.

You can ask a more specific question, since there are way too many factors at play for the entire team anyway. Which is why people just tell people to replace the players with their own players, because they've but some thought into their own teams, but it takes a lot to break down a whole team.

Something like "I've choosen to go with X instead of X because I think he's the same value for money, but cheaper, because Y. This allowed me to upgrade player Z and P by 0.5 each. Do you think the sacrifice is worth it?" Basically a glorified A/B question - which is actually what the game is about really 🙂

Lots of ways to form questions and find angles to explore. RMT by itself is another way of asking for a template. I know I do it sometimes, but I try to discuss with people you reply. Difficult in this comment section format though.

De gea: highest scoring gk in a defensive team. Definite for me

Coleman: injured last season led to drop in price. Great manager. Definite for me

Douglas: crazy stats. Granted in championship but even if he gets half of what he did i will be happy at 5.0. Bit of a punt but the kind i like

Mendy: not sure if i will start him gw 1 but i will want him for man city awesome fixtute run. A placeholder for now.

Cedric and kiko: a 4.5 rotation of decent attacking potential considering price

      Salah: perma captain. Definite

Mane: liverpools first 4 fixtures to good to just have salah. Will review after 4 weeks

Sane: fresh and hungry. Need a city attacker and right now it is him. May change once pre season is done to whoever i think is nailed

Jota and sessegnon: being punty here but jota might play upfront and i think wolves will be midtable. I expect sessegnon to play lw. I think he will justify his price

Firmino: triple liverpool attack is not a good long term strategy but i think it will work for 4 weeks. Will upgrade to auba or kane.

Reid and kamara: i am playing 4 5 1 so they will be on my bench most weeks

        That's more like it!

Imo De Gea is just not worth it at all, not when Ederson is cheaper. If you look at the stats last season, Utd kept one more clean sheet but faced a lot more chances, so there is evidence to suggest City will have the stronger defence next year. Yes, De Gea might get a few more save points but I just can't see him provding better value. In fact, for even less money, you can invest in the third best defence in the league last year with Karius, but given you already have 3 Pudlians, I can understand you not picking him for this reason (I might consider investing somehow in Liverpool's defence over Mane, say though - Robertson or Van Dijk could also be excellent picks)

Agree on Mendy - haven't got Coleman or Douglas myself but can definitely appreciate them as picks. Watch out for Janmaat at Watford in preseason competing with Kiko.

Agree on Salah. Feel like there's better value than Mane but he's not a terrible pick, especially if you think they'll be strong at the start. City mid would be lovely to have if any are nailed, but hard to tell.

Personally not keen on Sessegnon - Jota maybe, but would rather have Ramsey for a bit more. Again, the picks are fine, just not personal preference.

Not massively keen on the formation - the bench strikers are generally more restrictive than the bench midfielders. I might look at upgrading one of them to Tosun and dropping Sessegnon. I don't know that much about Tosun except what I've gathered from here, but being the central striker for an Everton team with very friendly fixtures can't harm his prospects.

Overall no major problems, a couple of tweaks I'd make personally though

I would avoid having 3 unproven (in PL) players in your squad. For every Charlie Adam there’s 5 Graham Dorrens and Nemad Miljas’

Of course if one of them sprints out of the starting blocks, you always get the kudos of having him from GW1, which can, in some cases, outweigh the pain of making 2 transfers to ship out the other mugs.

        1. Andy_Social

Now then, I'm persuaded by the arguments that there is more value at the back than up top, and the best point-hauls are to be had in midfield. Therefore, my 532/442 draft is as follows.

          GK Ederson + 4m Steklenburg
Even if DDG gets marginally more points again, I'd rather spend the 0.5 elsewhere. Also I want triple City if possible as they will run away with the title again but rotation will be a nightmare and this is the only secure position.

DEF Azpi, Mendy, Bailly, TAA, Douglas
I'm of the view that there's a chasm between the top 6 and the rest and that it's the former that will amass clean sheets. Sarri's appointment gives me faith in Chelsea, I think Mendy will be an attacking beast, United will keep cleanies and I can easily switch Bailly for Jones or Lindelhof if they start. I want Robertson but TAA saves a million. Finally, Douglas doesn't fit my assumptions but he just seems so damn exciting, and I can easily replace him with quality if he disappoints. An Arsenal defender after GW3 would be a consideration.

MID Salah (c), Hazard, Lingard, Jota, Cairney
GW1 I may have Sanchez if Lukaku is rested and Alexis is up top, and Hazard is also rested. Long-term, I think Haz will have a great season under Sarri. 3rd Mid is between Lingard and Willian, whoever looks like getting sufficient gametime. A second Wolf is risky but Jota appears to be an OOP striker. Cairney seems an ideal 5th Mid and might play further forward with Seri behind him.

          FWD Morata, Tosun, Kamara
Morata went in today due to Sarri's appointment but if he's not favoured he'll be Firmino. As the armband will be on either Salah or possibly occasionally Hazard, I don't want to spend more on a striker. Tosun is in for early fixtures and an attacking-minded manager. Kamara is the cheapest forward for splinter duties.

      Good except for planning transfers.

What will you do if Aguero starts well? You'll keep him.

Good points tbf. I'mnot a fan of planning transfers and I'll be kicking myself in the event of either scenario. I could just get both but it means binning Tosun and Zaha for Auba and fodder (unless I find 0.5-1.0 and have Mitrovic as my 3rd striker).

Good team. One option I would consider is downgrading PVA to Tomkins. Then if Jota doesn’t perform and Aguero does, instead of taking Kun out you can easily switch Jota to Mkhitaryan/Ramsey for your Arsenal cover

Great idea, thank you. PVA tempts me because I was lucky enough to have him for his crazy run at the end of last season but I'm unsure of the likelihood of that continuing. That 1.0 could go a long way. I've got Mkhi on my watch list actually, looks a bargain at 7.0, will have to keep an eye on Emery's thinking pre-season.

A lot of defensive choice might come down to preseason. I'd want to keep a close eye on the City defence. If Mendy looks to be back and ready to start come GW1 he could be practically essential. In your case I'd probably look at going for a 6.0 and a 4.5 - my current draft has seen me double up on Van Dijk and Robbo. Not sure if it's the best plan but might be worth considering.

I really just don't know what to do about City mids. They have the potential to offer such great value for money, but when you look at the players they have (Sterling, Sane, Mahrez, De Bruyne, 2 Silvas, Aguero, Jesus) - that's 8 players competing for a maximum of 5 attacking positions each week - it's impossible to know who will play!

Currently I have Ederson + Otamendi + Mahrez + Aguero - bought Mahrez just in case of the very improbable case of multiple injuries or he somehow becomes randomly nailed for some reason. Problem is I can't change the rest of my draft without getting rid of one, so he will probably have to go.

It'll probably just be a case of very closely watching preseason - chances are I'm gonna double up at the back and risk Aguero, and avoid the mids

I'd drop one of Coleman/Mendy for a £4.0m fodder and upgrade Mkhitaryan to a big hitter.

Not sure yet, but there is enough quality on his bench to have a wasted spot.

          Maybe Peltier or Bednarek.
