The World Cup final between France and Croatia takes place this Sunday, but McDonald’s FIFA and Fantasy iTeam managers ought to be aware that the third-place play-off between Belgium and England – which takes place on Saturday at 3pm – also counts towards their Fantasy scores.

Although rotation can be expected for this hollow match between the losing semi-finalists, the fact that Fantasy managers get five free transfers in the McDonald’s FIFA game (three in Fantasy iTeam) ahead of this final round ought to be more than enough to enable a full starting XI at the very least.

That we will know the line-ups for the third-place play-off before the final World Cup Fantasy window shuts on Saturday afternoon will also help with our squad selections.

While we can confidently predict the full-strength starting XIs for France and Croatia ahead of the final, Saturday’s play-off tie is sure to feature some peripheral Belgian and English squad players. Fantasy managers would, therefore, be advised to look out for team news an hour or two before kick-off as there could well be some Fantasy differentials with low ownership on display that could help reduce or consolidate a mini-league deficit.

Our team-by-team analysis of Opta’s World Cup data, which is available to Fantasy Football Scout members as part of their yearly subscription, provides clues as to which players’ underlying statistics could translate into Fantasy points and which assets are best avoided.

World Cup Data

We’re delighted to offer World Cup data as an early addition to our regular season offering to help those playing Fantasy games over the summer.

We’ve secured Opta data, not only for the tournament itself, which begins on June 14 but also from the Qualifying Rounds for Europe and South America and for international friendlies involving the participating nations. This includes all the matches played right up to the tournament kick-off.

Just to stress, this World Cup offering comes packaged with the regular Fantasy Football Scout membership.

Check out this new trailer previewing the World Cup content below…

    Thoughts on this 4-4-2?

    Ederson
    Robertson - Bailly - Coleman - Doherty
    Salah - Sane - Sanchez - Jota
    Firmino - Wood

    Hamer - Tomkins - Stephens - Kamara

Decent- although I'd downgrade Bailly and Sanchez and get a premium striker

Need a stronger bench. Doherty and Wood will be very hit and miss. Premium striker very important also to enable access to Kane Aguero Lukaku etc. If they explode

    First draft, what we thinking?

    Ederson
    Azpi PVA Daniels
    Salah Sane Walcott Dilva
    Auba Zaha Jimenez

    Speroni Cedric Peltier Stephens

David Silva a placeholder for Pogba once he's back from World Cup duty.

    Ederson

First FPL ever .. this is my 2nd draft:

    Ederson / Speroni
Alonso / Cedric / Coleman / Ward / Van Aanholt
    Masuaku / Gross / Salah / Ramsey / Stephens
    Firmino / Aguero / Wood

I think maybe I should upgrade my midfield and downgrade defense...

Depends on the formation you want to play but I agree your midfield is looking a bit weak.

      Van Aanholt > Tomkins
      Alonso > Robertson

This frees up 1.5 to upgrade Gross to D.Silva.

Because when Pep played with Mendy as a wing back, he didn’t play with a left winger.

If Mendy plays LB then Sane will play, if he plays LWB, then I doubt Sane plays.

Hard to say he won’t play if Mendy plays LWB. Sane wasn’t fit at the start of last season and Mendy injured very early.

              Middle 3 in a 4-1-3-2 or inside forward in a 4-3-3, doesn't fit in a 3-5-2

Sane is not a pure winger, hes more like Sterling except hes simply a better, more versatile player so he was used on the wing during Mendy's injury. I think its wrong to believe Sane will be benched whenever Mendy plays.

A bit off-topic, but can't Mendy just play regular left-back in a back 4 and leave Sane alone?

No one is leaving Sane alone.
Mendy just one of about 6 players competing for his starting spot.

He can. But the point I’m making is I don’t believe it’s safe to start with either because they are risky picks.

Better off starting with ederson if you want a city defender, and d Silva for a mid.

Who knows though hey, all we can do is speculate 😆

                Thanks, good analysis there.

Backs up my point that Sane is a risky pick.
Personally, regardless of your analysis (which brings a strong case forward for Mendy) I just want to be risk adverse in my beginning squad.

I’d be bringing him in for sure if he looks nailed.

Biggest positive Sane has is that he missed the WC. KDB rested with Bilva/Mahrez playing there and Sane playing the Sterling role is a likely option, as is Mendy being eased in and Sane staying wide like last year but long term it's a minefield.

depends on what set up Pep intends on using. If Sane has to contend with Mendy for a LWB/LM spot in a 5-3-2/3-5-2, then possibly

But City won the title with a back 4 at a canter so this could easily have changed Pep’s thinking

    4. AndyCook
      8 years, 4 days ago

Hard to know what system he will play with Mendy back. City look the team to score most goals and when you are weighing up value and points potential including expected gametime Sane looks one of the better bets (maybe the best). The feeling is that the upside is massive

Can't wait for a lot more pre-season friendlies to get under way.
So much speculation this season on personnel changes / management / post-WC hangovers etc
Getting some real data to work with
Almost feel like starting the draft teams (i think I'm on about my 8th) before the WC closed is a bit premature.

Doesn't mean I'm not enjoying it.

Kind of how I feel. Not knowing if city will revert to 352 or stick with the back 4 or go 343 (would be my preference for them) just makes the city player roulette even worse!

We'll know a lot more in 2 weeks once each teams had a couple games but until then the temptation to tinker is too much

I'd said on a previous reply that I think it's going to be a tough year.

Guys like Kane, Salah, Hazard, any city attack, Auba, Mkh, Higuin (if he signs) could all explode at various times.

It's going to come down to sticking with what you have and hoping you backed the right horses over the course or attempting to swap them out at the right time and hope you don't get burned.

Agreed. I think you have to have a couple of Big Assets (ooh err missus) in your team to allow for movement if other big assets hit form.
Ive seen a lot of teams with light fwd line - tosun/arnie/zaha for example.
Makes it super hard to adjust and get an on fire Auba/kun etc

Yeah you need a couple but you don't necessarily need them in the each position if we're talking about shifting things around here and there for the first 6 to 8 GWs.

For example, one of the reasons I'm going Sanchez (apart from a strong gut feeling his will do well first 2 fixtures) is that I actually don't really intend to keep him, and that's a good thing because he's where cash is going to come from.

So when I upgrade a forward to Auba - money from Sanchez and 2 FT in GW3. Or if Auba isn't looking right, a small downgrade of Sanchez to a City mid doing well, Arsenal mid etc. Plenty of options created by having all that money in one player you don't want to keep unless they're absolutely smashing it.

Agree, will have my eye on some potential bargain players depending on the role they play in preseason.
Bolasie at 6.0 could be a steal if he starts as a forward.

Also need to see what system some teams will be playing (mainly Arsenal and Man City) before considering players like Sane and Mkhi.

It's closer than I expected if you base it on last season's PPG...
      A) 3.6 + 3.9 + 8.4 x2 = 24.3
      B) 5.4 + 5.1 + 6.8 x2 = 24.1

The advantage of A is that Salah appears more nailed than Aguero but I think it comes down to a decision about which players over/under performed last season.
I have A but you have made me question what's best.

Any thoughts on this seemingly boring worried about WC players draft:

    Ederson (4.0)
    Robertson - Coleman - Daniels - Tomkins - Peltier
    Salah - Eriksen - Mahrez - Walcott - 4.5
    Firmino - Zaha - Arnautovic

    Could do:
    Ederson + Coleman > Pickford + Mendy
    and/or
    Mahrez + Robertson > KdB + TAA

But both seem more risk at the moment.

I think in theory a 4-4-2 can be great for maximising value in your team. In this particular case though, it looks like you're doing it just to accommodate Cedric 😛

      1. jia you
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 4 days ago

I think Cedric looks cracking value at 4.5 if Soton play three atb and with Hughes there I think they will be much better.

        1. Pierce34
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 4 days ago

I think he reverted to 4 at the back for their recent friendly but yes, fair enough. And having said that Cedric at the moment looks nailed in my team because I have 4 City players and attempting to go one month without changing anything! 😆

            • 9 Years
            8 years, 4 days ago

4 City could do well but I'm a bit wary at the start. I think I prefer my Salahless drafts but those opening three fixtures are too scary to go without him! 13m is just a tad too much tied up in a mid!

            1. Pierce34
              • 10 Years
              8 years, 4 days ago

Weird that your draft has Salah and mine doesn't! I do have Mane currently but might change my mind of course, though part of me wants to just keep the draft as it is just for the sake of exploiting the loophole and having 4 players from the same team!

                • 9 Years
                8 years, 4 days ago

I might take out Salah again as I can get Ederson(Pickford) + Mahrez + Firmino in place of Fabianski + Salah + King! Team just looks stronger overall without Salah but it's scary going without knowing what he can do!

I'm inclined to agree - as I said above at the moment it's mostly in order to feel good about myself exploiting the loophole! 😀

Though if there's any team to quadruple-up from, it would be City I guess.

My previous draft has Pickford/Stek dbl up. Then I brought in Coleman for Daniels instead and downgraded Pickford. Fabianski was my set and forget GK last season and he done me proud but yeah WHU could be very leaky again!

    Rate this 4-4-2?

    Ederson
    Mendy, Coleman, Mee, Douglas
    Salah, Özil, Sigurdsson, Maddison
    Agüero, Zaha

Begovic (pretty much only for GW1 start), Dunk, Cairney, Locadia

There are other players I’d think about, but a lot could be unavailable, risky or uncertain to start. Best to wait til preseason, but are there any other DEF / MID with serious goalscoring threat. These are who I aim for usually

Oh true. I may bring him in after the first two GWs then. I wanted an Arsenal attacker due to their easy fixtures but figured only Aubameyang and Özil were the certain starters. I had Özil on the bench anyway tbh. Any alternatives? Apparently, Son may be unavailable coz of the Asian games in August
