The World Cup final between France and Croatia takes place this Sunday, but McDonald’s FIFA and Fantasy iTeam managers ought to be aware that the third-place play-off between Belgium and England – which takes place on Saturday at 3pm – also counts towards their Fantasy scores.

Although rotation can be expected for this hollow match between the losing semi-finalists, the fact that Fantasy managers get five free transfers in the McDonald’s FIFA game (three in Fantasy iTeam) ahead of this final round ought to be more than enough to enable a full starting XI at the very least.

That we will know the line-ups for the third-place play-off before the final World Cup Fantasy window shuts on Saturday afternoon will also help with our squad selections.

While we can confidently predict the full-strength starting XIs for France and Croatia ahead of the final, Saturday’s play-off tie is sure to feature some peripheral Belgian and English squad players. Fantasy managers would, therefore, be advised to look out for team news an hour or two before kick-off as there could well be some Fantasy differentials with low ownership on display that could help reduce or consolidate a mini-league deficit.

Our team-by-team analysis of Opta’s World Cup data, which is available to Fantasy Football Scout members as part of their yearly subscription, provides clues as to which players’ underlying statistics could translate into Fantasy points and which assets are best avoided.

World Cup Data

We’re delighted to offer World Cup data as an early addition to our regular season offering to help those playing Fantasy games over the summer.

We’ve secured Opta data, not only for the tournament itself, which begins on June 14 but also from the Qualifying Rounds for Europe and South America and for international friendlies involving the participating nations. This includes all the matches played right up to the tournament kick-off.

Just to stress, this World Cup offering comes packaged with the regular Fantasy Football Scout membership.

Check out this new trailer previewing the World Cup content below…

    Pickford Stek
    Mendy Bailly Tomkins Cedric Daniels
    Salah Mahrez Siggy Costa 4.5
    Aguero Morata Zaha

Some questions marks here - your thoughts?

Weak is harsh. Bailly isn't nailed. I would get a 4.0 for Daniels and upgrade to Robertson

I like the team if you're tempted by three-up-top, and also think the above is good advice. You'd need to be pretty sure Morata is Sarri's top-choice, though, obvs.

    Thoughts on Chris Wood?

I know Burnley have European football but that won't affect them much for the first few weeks. He has nice fixtures and a good scoring record

At the start I don’t see Europe being an issue fir Burnley so with their fixtures a good shout. I might dg Zaha to him for .5 elsewhere

Slightly wary of rotation but he could be worth a try for the first few weeks. If it goes wrong easy to upgrade to Zaha or Arnie or downgrade to Reid or a Wolves/Fulham forward.

Kante is too good to drop. If he played 4-4-2 with existing Chelsea players, wouldn't it be wonderful if Alonso got the left winger berth?

Also, for some reason Morata now seems a possibility.

Any major issues with this 3-5-2 side? A bit concerned about double Arsenal with our first two games but City will probably have a lot of players missing and Chelsea could be without Kante when we face them. Plus our run of games after that is pretty good.

    Foster - Guaita
    Robertson - Coleman - Cedric - Tomkins - Bamba
    Salah - D. Silva - Ramsey - Walcott - Deulofeu
    Auba - Firmino - Quaner

          Planning transfers = mistake.

If you want Auba, get Auba.
If you want Aguero, get Aguero.

If it just so happens that, come GW3, Aguero --> Auba is a sensible swap then make it.

            Yeah you're right.

I like it, but tend to think you'll get more value out of turning it into a 4-4-2 and downgrading Deulofeu and upgrading Cedric or Tomkins. I'd also prefer Kamara to Quaner, but I think the structure is a good one.

      1. stat
        8 years, 4 days ago

Interesting thought, but which 5.5M defender (or lower) is worth it for the first few games?
        There's:
        1) PvA but then I'd be tripling up on Palace defence.
        2) Baines - good shout if he's on set pieces, doubling up on Everton defence under an attacking manager though.
        3) A Burnley defender perhaps? Europa League would potentially be an issue later on

        1. stat
          8 years, 4 days ago

Also note for 1) I want to keep Tomkins, that's why I'd be replacing Cedric

Too soon to tell which 5.5 defenders look like starting the season but there could be a lot of them. Utd, City and Chelsea, for examples, could easily start with 5.5 players. Food for thought, like. Good luck!

Girls, take this as you will:

I had a dream last night that after the first set of games for GW1, with a five-man midfield, four of them scored over 20 points. One was Pogba, who scored two goals, and one was Cedric.

Obviously I was in first place after that day.

Trying to make a decent 5-3-2 team. Salah takes up ALOT of cash but i think its better to start with him and if he doesnt deliver enough for the buck i can ship him out easily compared to be left behind without him and spending like 3 transfers just to get him in. Also hard with so many assets still in the world cup who i dont want to risk getting in at GW1.
    My team so far :

    Leno
Mendy -Smalling - Azpi - Robertson - Baines
    Salah - Mahrez - Sigurdsson
    Auba - Zaha

    Norris | Obiang | Stephens | Kamara

I really like it. Personal preference is to start the season strong at the back and let the money drift forwards when we know which defences look most promising. I'd probably downgrade Smalling and turn Stephens into a more-promising first sub (Costa, maybe? Cairney?) just to give yourself a bit of flexibility. And I had Obiang for way too long last season and, mate, just no. You could even downgrade him to a playing 4.0 with such a strong defence. And keep an eye on the pre-season form for Siggy vs Ramsey. But I really like it! Good luck.

      1. sfsfsfe
        • 8 Years

I also prefer a strong defense in the start, imo its easier to predict cleans than predict mid-priced midfielders who might fly. To be honest i just brought in Smalling to get some united coverage and he is the only one i think is nailed in their defense except for Valencia who i didn't have cash for.
Depending on their pre-season the dream would be Lindelöf getting a spot due to his price, should not be impossible taking his great world cup performances in mind.

RMT please, going for a 4-5-1 with no players who went far in the World Cup to start the season. Early wildcard in one of the international breaks is definitely my plan.

Ederson - Solid opening fixtures, nailed, likely to pick up regular CS points.

Otamendi, PvA, Coleman, Douglas - In defence I’ve elected for big budget players who are likely to see attacking returns as well as be 100% nailed each game.

Salah, Sánchez, Mahrez, Jota, Cairney - Touched a fair few price points in midfield which gives me the flexibility to change to a second striker if somebody becomes mandatory. Sanchez likely to start as United’s striker for the first few weeks. Got Mahrez in before he was changed to City ingame, hence how I have four City assets. Jota and Wolves as a whole seem massively underpriced for my money, and Cairney is also a bargain considering Seri signing which’ll likely see Johansen on the bench and Cairney assume all set pieces.

Aguero - Nailed City striker with Jesus going to the QFs with Brazil and playing a lot.

Bench: 4.0 GK, 4.0 DEF, 2x 4.5 FWD (Kamara and Quaner who I’d imagine both chip in for 1 point per game, but hopefully I won’t end up needing)

Sorry 4-5-1 not for me , 4-4-2 the only compromise given some well priced forwards this season

I think double Wolves in the early stages might be slightly risky given their mixed early fixtures. Possibly better off going Jota -> 5.5mid (for example) and then can upgrade one of the bench options to come in for Douglas when they play MUN/MCI early on.

I've put Sane in as my City mid rather than Mahrez. Think it's just pot luck with them early on so fair enough going for it.

Encouraging to see another team with Sanchez in! 😉

Mahrez as a fourth city only works if you don’t want to change your team all season. Otherwise it is a pain because as soon as you want to make a transfer you won’t be able to make the one you want you will have to remove a city asset

        I hear what you're saying.

The logic behind my thinking is that after GW2, when I have two free transfers, I'll likely drop Otamendi for whichever 4.0/4.5 defender emerges as a starter, and use the spare 2.5/2.0 million to upgrade one of my attackers, which will give me the flexibility to run 3-5-2, 4-5-1 or 4-4-2.

        1. AndyCook
          8 years, 4 days ago

That makes sense, im not sure the upside is enough for me especially as Arsenal isn’t a great fixture, but I get where you are coming from

Personally I don't think there's a better 5.5 defender to start with than Coleman. The ones at City, United and Chelsea aren't nailed, and Arsenal have two difficult fixtures.

I don't think so. I'm on Coleman, Siggy and Wally atm. If you think they're going to score well it doesn't matter that they all play for the same club.

Not someone who usually plans transfers but surely it makes more sense to start with Firmino + 1.5 itb for the first 2 GWs (WHU cpa) in which i think he'll outscore Auba(MCI che), then bring in Auba GW2 for his favourable fixtures and therefore maximise points?

You could expect Brazil to match the pattern of returnees from 2014's WC top 4 teams, which had about the same time between their games and the prem as Brazil do this year 🙂

By that time you’ll have wanted to spend the 1.5 on someone else. Two fixtures is too short to want to have a player for me. I’d start with who you want for the first 8 or so fixtures and use all your budget at the start.

Apparently they are targetting Michael Antonio, which could have a knock-on effect on Schloop unless Zaha leaves. Even if they don't get Antonio, they could be targetting an attacker by the sounds of things. Hope he'll be the gold dust I desire though

Don't worry. Last season defence-heavy teams did superbly at the start of the season. I love a strong back-line early doors and will probably end up with four at 5.5+ (along with a 4.0). I could be tempted by a downgrade to Douglas if Wolves look as good as some think they might be.

I'll probably start him week in, week out. Everton should be a more attacking side under Silva so it could pay off. Thankfully only 2 of his first 10 games are against top six sides (Arsenal away in GW 6, United away in GW 10).

Tentatively putting a first draft together as so much can change over the course of the next 4 weeks. Would welcome thoughts on my dilemma:

    A) Robertson + Sane

Leaning towards A due to Mendy being in WC squad so might be on holiday for a few weeks whereas Robertson is already in pre-season.
