We are delighted to announce there is just one week left until the official launch of Fantasy Football book ‘Wasting Your Wildcard‘.

Written by regular site contributor David Wardale and fully endorsed by Fantasy Football Scout, it will be released on Thursday July 26, to plug the painful gap between the end of the World Cup and start of the 2018/19 Premier League season.

Subtitled ‘The Method and Madness of Fantasy Football’, the book is being published by Penguin’s respected sports imprint, Yellow Jersey Press, and is packed with hints and tips from some of the best Fantasy managers out there.

But it is as much about the people as the game, with stories of glory and despair, mini-league skulduggery and humiliating failure and the strange grip the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in particular has on managers from Australia to Zimbabwe and just about everywhere in between.

There are in-depth interviews with FPL champions and Fantasy-mad Saudi princes, a comprehensive look at the eternal conflict that is stats versus ‘the eye test’ and chapters on the history of the game, the all-conquering beast that is Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and what the future of Fantasy Football might look like.

There’s also a revealing section on our very own Mark, detailing the methods behind his successful approach to playing FPL.

Written by a fan for the fans, we think Wasting Your Wildcard will inform and entertain in equal measure, while grappling with the reasons behind why we, as supposedly grown-up men and women, cannot resist playing a game of footballing dress-up.

And to give you a taste of what you can expect, we’re planning to publish an exclusive extract for newsletter subscribers in the very near future.

The cheek of plugging a book (related to the theme of the website) by a contributor to the website. And then forcing you, the potentially free visitor to said website, to read and comment on it. I'm outraged for you

The reason you keep getting these comments is because people feel they're putting time into your posts and you aren't giving it back. One of the kind of unspoken etiquette rules of the site is to help out others and I think a few feel you aren't; whether that's warranted or not is between you and them!

Your name is now recognizable - if you get a grav and respond to people's questions, it'll go a long way to helping you get good answers 🙂

How do folks rate Austin as a GW1 pick? Good fixtures, not much competition for a starting place, and track record of generally scoring when he plays...

Is it just his own fitness that’s against him?

For 6.0 he allows a whole lot of budget elsewhere without compromising too much on points potential.

Yeah, he's not exactly an exciting player to pick. Like you said above, if you don't have Mendy or Robertson then either of them will far outscore any 6m striker 🙂

I have always had a soft spot for him after captaining him when he scored a hattie (think he was at QPR at the time). But isn’t he like 50 years old now?

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

Think he’s Only 47. I remember him scoring for QPR as well for about 5.5m think it was the year Kane broke through at a ridiculously cheap price too, or maybe it was Dele Alli. They were a great FPL forward line. Good times.

But are the good times over for Charlie?

Yep, just his fitness, if he starts the season as first choice and he’s nice and sharp after a full pre season then with those favourable fixtures, he could be gold.

    5. Skalla
      • 9 Years

Think he is a decent option, but not sure he will outscore a premium defender, so personally going to avoid any strikers under 7m for now unless it is a 4.5-5m bench fodder.

Is wenger's absence the cause of arsenal assets almost all being underpriced, or do we now just agree they're part of 'the rest'? A Ramsey, mkhi, lacca triple up might look very appealing come October.

Surely not? Aub on fire throughout. When Ramsey wasn't injured he did well. And mkhi adapted well to two new clubs.

Apparently in two messages I've now assumed aub over lacca, idiot. But even he is nicely priced. Lacca wasn't as good as he'd have been had he and aub not rotated around europa

You never mentioned Auba. Ramsey did pretty well on and off. But how did he do in the seasons before that? People think it's a given he'll do well this time. Mkhi sucked

            • 8 Years

Yeah I realised, lol. I really like auba, just he isn't worth it vs the others given their prices.

Think the Ramsey offs were just him not playing weren't they? And he was huge in Europa. Think he really came of age in the euros with Wales tbh.

              15/16: 119 points from 2623 minutes = 4.08 pts per 90 mins

              16/17: 56 points from 1236 minutes = 4.07 pts per 90 mins

How is this brilliant? Well below the numbers produced by Arnie, Zaha or Gross in their previous seasons (similarly priced players)

        • 8 Years
        8 years, 9 days ago

Absolutely, and that's the issue isn't it. If they were all on different teams I'd take the risk, but together that's a lot of money to draw 1-1 with Cardiff at home.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 16 Years

Big time. If Arsenal don’t score 2 or 3 a game then Laca, Ramsey, Auba, Mkhi are going to be letting a lot of people down. But then again you could say that about Liverpool & City.

But those two have precedent, Arsenal could do anything, very hard to judge

          1. VanDijksToWatchOutFor
            • 8 Years

And they're significantly cheaper. Also, less rotation than city. First few weeks will tell us a lot. Could well end up being comparable to the November triple up on cout, salah and firmino if everything clicks (with nobody quite mirroring salah of course)

Really? Lacazette started up top for ages last season to little effect - can't see there being much change.

Martial looks good to start with, but price reflects his long term prospects

Yeah if you actually look at laca’s points per 90 mins it’s v high. He must have missed a fair chunk of minutes last season, but still got 14 goals & 5 assists.

With a step up in minutes it doesn’t look far away from 20 goals & 10 assists... which would be pretty nifty for 9.5m

I do think Auba will outscore him as Auba just looks like a monster player, but Laca should pick up a fair few goals & assists in his wake, more than enough to justify his price, and Its hard to fit Auba in when he will rarely if ever he captained ahead of Salah or even Kun.

Lacazette was subbed an awful lot, and looked to be carrying some sort of injury midway through the season. Looked a lot better since.

A lot of that was europa league though wasn't it?

I think it's hard choosing the secondary striker isn't it? He'll probably end up similar points per outlaid money to auba, just enables another nice midfielder (like Ramsey) over a 6m punt.

    Thoughts on 1st draft (3-4-3)?

Pickford (Fabinaski) -- Schmeichel insted of Pikford, if he joins CFC.

    Colman- Cedric- Bailly (Tomkins, Daniels)

    Mahrez- Sane- Willian- Walcott (Stephens)

    Kane- Firmino- Zaha

Think Everton and CRY will have a great start so i am starting with 3 players from Everton .....smart or not?

Double city defense on Mendy and Ederson anyone? With uncertainty about the mid and attack I feel like he city spot is best used reaping inevitable points there but who knows

Meh. City defence gets points, sure, but defence is the one place where the other big sides can match them. I'd rather reserve the spots for attacking City assets. Maybe Mendy as he gets involved a lot, but I think Ederson is a mistake

It's a waste of a City spot imo. If it's anything like last season, I'll have 2 from KdB, Aguero, Jesus, Sane, Mahrez, Sterling, Silva for most of the year. Just depends on injuries/form and who plays most.

I like it actually. I'm definitely on ederson as set and forget. Mendy could work out as well, I just don't quite have the money for it. The merrygoround in the attacking positions is a headache. Going sane early and toying with kun.

That's what I'm looking at. Ederson easily the most nailed asset. Mendy looks fairly sure of starts, at least to begin with, unlike any of the attackers. City defenders are also a brilliant route for value.

The obvious issue is the lack of forward spots - I have no City forwards atm which is a bit scary

  21. GW1-2 Captaincy: Alternatives to Salah and Sanchez
    Deulofail
    • 10 Years
    8 years, 9 days ago

Just wondering who you think are the best captaincy options for each of the first 2 weeks - excluding Salah and Sanchez!

    - Firmino (WHU, cpl) not guaranteed to start GW1 imo, but could be an option.

    - Mané (WHU, cpl) is an option, but doesn't excite me enough as a captain pick yet.

    - Martial (LEI, bri) might be one of the best options. Hopefully he can burst through Jose's constraints.

    - Aguero (ars, HUD) is a great option for GW2, especially if assured a start with 2 at the top, but GW1 is uninspiring, considering great fixtures for other players

    - Mahrez, etc (ars, HUD) expected to start and hopefully excite, but probably no better than Aguero

    - Aubameyang (MCI, che) might be a tad better than Aguero for GW1. Arsenal like a home game and he should be on pens (GW1 is good for pens, I'm assuming). GW2 is even less attractive though imo

    - Lacazette, Ozil, Ramsey and Mkhitaryan (MCI, che) are less enticing than Aubameyang, unless we find out that one of them is on pens.

    - Zaha (ful, LIV) could be a standout captaincy option for GW1 in this list, assuming he's starting in a front 2. 5 goals in 6 matches since he moved into this position.

    - Deulofeu (BRI, bur) was my favourite for GW1 captaincy since the day the game launched! We'd have to see him looking fit and useful in pre-season though, and obviously this feels like a hige step down from the possibility of captaining Salah.

    - Arnautovic (liv, BOU) could be a great option in GW2.

    - Vardy (mun, WOL) could be a great option in GW2.

    - Higuain (hud, ARS) if at Chelsea would be an option at Huddersfield. Risky to captain a new player in GW1 though.

    - Wood (sou, WAT) is a good value goalscorer, and could get you more than value with his opening fixtures, especially with captaincy.

    - Kane (new, FUL), Eriksen and Lamela might be all right if/when they start.

    - Walcott and Siggy (wol, SOU) could be options, especially in GW2.

    - PVA, Coleman, Robertson, or a Chelsea defender could really be the way to go for GW1 if you don't have Salah or Sanchez in GW1. If Coleman looks potent and Southampton look as tame going forwars as last year, he could be considered for their GW2 match-up too.

Are there any other players who would rival the best options on this list in either GW1 or GW2?

I think this definitely highlights how essential it is to captain Salah inGW1. If he fails no big deal, if he scores, his ownership will leave you chasing 20-30 points and a FT to get him in, unless you can work miracles & predict a non-Salah captain that scores well each week. Maybe Kun/Auba could do it, but you’d have to be very risk-prone to go there!

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 9 days ago

Yeah GW1 captaincy is likely to be the decising factor in getting Salah in the end, but it's only one week. Some have skipped the issue by getting Sanchez, but I see him as a waste of money, really. Just trying to engage my brain. Thanks for your thoughtful reply 🙂

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 16 Years

There may be a few brave (or foolhardy) souls who choose to go without for GW1, and some of those may even hit on a captain who score 10-15 points... those folks could well have OR’s in he top 1k or even top 100 as it would be so against the grain.

But for the vast majority who go without Salah, it really does look like an approach destined for failure.

I think it’s definitely safer to get him in, captain him, and be prepared to switch if he does show signs of loss of form, or an injury etc,

But who knows what the hell things will look like in 3 weeks, Salah may not even be at Liverpool, or he could be injured... it’s all making for a very interesting GW1 imo!

Yet another reason to consider the question in the post. I've often found myself in a position where I've not considered particular options as others have because I'm convinced it's not necessary to me, only to find that something changes and I have to suddenly research in the space of a day or an hour the best course of action, or otherwise rely on the community to bail me out (which isn't the most reliable way to go anyway!). Bored of the template bashers on this site.

Yep absolutely agree, this type of analysis is invaluable in getting comfortable with an expensive captain like Salah... there’s no one on that list who technically couldn’t outscore Salah in GW1, but there’s also no one on the list who I really think would outscore Salah if that makes sense lol

          Klopps exact words

"I really hope we dont have to use them against West Ham"

          Referring to henderson and lovren

So everyone is essentially available but those 2 in particular have been earmarked to not start.

I am so sure bobby is starting that my current frontline is

          Bobby reid and kamara.

Look who comes in if i am wrong.

You should 100% captain firmino or mane if you dont have salah.

Until we buy fekir and he and shaqiri have learned the system there will be no rotating the front 3.

I could name the liverpool starting line up right now for west ham.

I'm still missing the evidence for Firmino starting.

"I really hope we dont have to use them against West Ham"

"Use them" means use as a starter or as a bench player.

Firmino can logically fit into a different category in which he could be happily utilised either as a starter or a sub.

I get that you're sure. But I haven't seen the evidence myself. Hense I am unsure.

(if you're wrong, it's very possible (probable even?) that Reid and Kamara would stay on your bench, because Firmino could come off the bench)

What's going on? I currently have Salah and Firmino in my team. I think it's pretty fair to say that Firmino isn't guaranteed to start GW1 because of the World Cup, even if it's likely he will. But it makes him less desirable as a captain option.

I'm not looking for an argument, mate. I don't need to post evidence that most of my currently players didn't play in the WC Quarters, thanks.

I see absolutely no reason to believe that a bit part quarter final player who is currently instrumental to a way of playing and whose backups played less minutes last season than the 60 minutes he played at the world cup wont start.

Your reasoning on this one is off. You cant lump all quaterfinalists into the same category even if i agree that some of those are at risk. A finalist mendy has already joined his team for an upcoming tour.
Klopp has stated when firmino will be back. I am not guessing here. He is back earlier than expected for a training camp designed to incorporate some amzing starters to gel with key players who havnt been involved yet and will start gw 1

Now if you are not sure fine. And you clearly dont want my help. I will not post any more responses on the matter.

Of course Firmino might start. Then again, he might be benched with Mane-Salah-Shaq up top. We are three weeks away from knowing anything for certain.

Deloufail's HT is hypothetical, but theories should always be backed up with evidence. If not, they are not likely to convince anyone. Hence, he does not buy into your theories on Firmino.

this kind of discussions are just based on assumptions, and Delofail has one you have another. I buy into your logic, but the question is is that logic the same for everyone? In this particular case, Firmino, history tells us that he often needs a bit of time to reach back to his fitness levels, and even if he didn´t play that much in world cup he wasn´t on vacation either, meaning his pre-season starts at the beginning of august, so to me that says spending 9.5m on a player that may start but if starting is going to be far off in terms of fitness.

Haven’t looked further than Salah before now as it seems a no brainer

United have a decent attacking fixture so maybe a forward if we were sure any of them would start

Otherwise maybe a different Liverpool asset like Firmino or Mane

      Great post

      Some musings:

Why do you see Sanchez as such a no brained great option? Interested as he didn’t really do very well at United last season?

I’d personally expect Firm to start

Martial should be good for the first couple of weeks but surely due some rotation with Mata / Rashford pushing for his place

Deo as favourite for captain seems a bit of a stretch I would say, but no doubt he is a skilful player who should have a good season. But for him surely that caps at 10 PL goals at best?

Agree on Wood I think he’s good value even though Burnley don’t score so much

I feel like PVA is being overhyped. Palace get few clean sheets and say he gets 5 goals a season, you have to play him every game. Could cost you if a good mid or striker below 7m emerges. That said I’m still tempted by him

Hey Coaly, thanks for your reply.

Assuming people took this post seriously, I thought Sanchez was going to be the obvious answer that everyone said. I'm personally not interested in spending that much money on him, so I decided to exclude him from captaincy game and try and try to force a bit more diversity in responses. That worked 😐

I also expect Firmino to start. Doubt was playing one my mind when I wrote this as I was visualising 1pt off the bench from a GW1 captain, which I would argue is more likely with Firmino than, say, Aubamayeng.

I think PVA is underhyped! I'm hoping for more cleen sheets from Palace this year, as they were a bit unlucky last season imo. Hopefully some more cohesion up the left so long as they stick to the system that has been working for them. 2 returns (e.g. CS + assist) isn't hard to imagine away to Fulham in GW1, but perhaps I'm guilty of overhyping myself 😀

    Any thoughts here?

    Ederson, 4.0
    Robertson, Mendy, Bellerin, Shaw, Peltier
    Salah, Ramsey, Willian, Martial, Ralls
    Lacazette, Firmino, Kamara

Strategy is (c) Salah + value everywhere else, which I think is best offered in the mid-price mids and premium defenders. Any mistakes? Please question my logic - I'd rather be proven wrong and get a better team out of it

Reliant on Mendy and Shaw to hold places. As well as Bellerin with new full backs at Arsenal. Martial and Willian again rotational risks if long haul planning. Kamara i know nothing about and Lacazette is a nice diff, but will he and Auba carry on how last season ended. Plus Arsenal vs City is a tough first gig.

Thanks. You're right about concerns about Mendy and Shaw. It is a risk I suppose, but if they do hold their place they are both unbelievable value.
Mourinho has said he will not be starting with WC players which makes Shaw (and Martial) nailed for at least the first week. From Shaw's recent comments, he seems determined to claim the LB spot, so it is a risk I'm willing to take.

Bellerin is pretty certain to start. Lichtsteiner appears to have been bought as an experienced back up to provide some competition rather than a replacement.

Willian isn't really a rotation risk. Sarri has made it clear that he really wants Willian to stay, which says to me he's an important player in Sarri's plans. If he's sold, I can get Pedro instead.

I'm focusing on WAY more games than just GW1, and don't want to waste transfers on defenders.
Imo Mendy is a far better pick than those two because of the hugely enhanced clean sheet potential. Looking at last year's top scoring defenders, they're all from big 6 teams - clean sheets with added attacking potential is a lot better than a slightly improved attacking threat imo

Mine is on its way too.

I am excited, curious and pleased to have supported the cause at FFS towers.

However, like my continued (10+ year stance) I refuse to conform to membership and/or extra data and material. My bias to all sport has been to watch the thing and make decisions based purely around what am I seeing and what I predict will happen.

I will read the book, and enjoy it, but how it comes to inform my choices over next season will be interesting to see.

Like Man Citys transition I could go from average to world class, in a matter of 6 or seven years, £100bn, twelvety managers and a new sponsorship deal with the oil industry. (facts and figures so untrue theyre false)

Either way, well done all involved in creation of said book.

When Silva managed Watford, did he have a big emphasis on attacking fullbacks? I seem to remeber nearly every week one of Kiko, Zeeglaar, Holebas etc we’re popping up with good scores.

Wondering will this translate to a good season for Coleman, and to a lesser extent Baines?

Yeah, him & PVA & Douglas all of a sudden look very appealing compared to their equivalently priced midfield & forward peers.

16.0m for those 3 could prove a shrewd use of funds... assuming Douglas makes the step up of course. But that Reddit writeup of Wolves chances certainly paints him in a very favourable light. And he does have he holy grail combo of being almost OOP as a wingback, AND set pieces plus fixtures.

Holebas and Femenia were amazing under him. I remember them and a few other players being public in their sentiment over his sacking.
I think we should see him get more out of Coleman than Baines, his legs ain't all they were few seasons back.

Hi everyone I have done two drafts which do you think is best? Any obvious easy swaps or big issue's I am missing in my selection?
If Bailly, Matip and Morata aren't likely starters come game week 1 I will change accordingly with players from that their team.

    Option A
    Ederson
    Bailly, Matip, Tomkins (Cedric) (Peltier)
    Mkhitaryan, Mane, Mata Sane (Stephens)
    Firmino, Morata, Aguero

0.5 in the bank. - Possibly Mata to Lingard after the first couple of game weeks?

    Option B

    Ederson
    Bailly, Matip, Tomkins, Bellerin (Cedric)
    Mkhitaryan, Mane, Sanchez (Stephens) (Hogg)
    Aguero, Firmino, Morata

    Thanks in advance

I like a lot of it but not the Palace defensive double up. Would change Guaita to Fabianski.

I’d also go for someone like Deulofeu for 5.5 instead of Jota and use the 1.0 to get another stronger defender. Gives you more flexibility each week.

If they don’t though, he could become an option...

    Ederson
    Valencia Bellerin Robertson Coleman
    Cairney Sane Salah Silva
    Aubameyang Zaha

    Subs: Boruc, Cedric, Masuaku, Madine

Would you make any changes to this team ?, any advice is welcome

Well with the Official FPL twitter page tweeting about Jota OOP, hes now gone from my team.

Absolute shame they have done hat for the casuals who were picking Neves instead.

You got rid of him because fpl tweeted about him. Jesus Chris, that's idiotic.

The more casuals who own the player, the more the player will score. That's the way it seems to go 😀 Get Jota back!

Well Neves just scored a pen , if only FPL will tweet that aswell to let the casuals know then you can put him back 🙂

Playing upfront in one friendly doesn't mean he'll be OOP come the start of the season.

    And advice?

    Bego (Fab)
Coleman - Tarkowski - PVA (Pereira, Peltier)
    Salah - Sanchez - Lamela - Bolasie (H.Costa)
    Aguero - Zaha - Arnie

Surely Lamela will feature at the start of the season with Eriksen, Alli and Son all being tired?

He'll get 1 yellow card per game, probably won't score anything, spurs probably wont keep clean sheets with their entire defence coming back from WC late so he won't even get the 1 point for that. I project 1 point per week from him (60+ mins played minus 1 for YC)

This seems pretty punty for GW1. I think maybe you need to trade down Sanchez to achieve better balance. He and Salah are two players in midfield with 1/4 of your budget.
