Great Expectations

Fresh from scoring in the World Cup final and winning the coveted trophy with France, Paul Pogba (£8.0m) could be about to record his best ever season with Manchester United.

The midfielder may miss the first few weeks of the campaign but across the course of 2018/19 there is great potential for him to be an important Fantasy Premier League asset.

A thigh muscle injury between September and November restricted Pogba to just 27 appearances for the Red Devils last season, but he still managed to record his highest ever FPL score of 138 from six goals and 13 assists. No United player was the provider for more goals and only Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) was involved in more than him.

We’ve had a look at some of the reasons why we expect Pogba to improve on that over the next 12 months, even if he will miss the first few weeks of the campaign through extended World Cup leave.

NEW POSITION

The arrival of Fred (£6.0m) at Old Trafford should allow Pogba more freedom to commit to attack this season. With the new signing potentially sat alongside Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) in holding midfield, Pogba will have less defensive responsibilities to concern himself with. Although it must be said that he particularly shone in a slightly deeper role for France next to N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) and Steven N’Zonzi in the World Cup final. At the same time, Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) earned Jose Mourinho’s favour playing as the central attacking midfielder in 2017/18 and Pogba may have to displace him if he hopes to play further up the pitch.

SHOTS FIRED

Pogba clearly has an eye for goal and should surpass his previous goal tally of six this season. Only six midfielders had more shots last season, despite him only playing 27 games. In fact, out of the Premier League’s most trigger happy midfielders in 2017/18, only Mohamed Salah (4.0) and Alexis Sánchez (2.83) averaged more shots per game than Pogba’s 2.81. The Frenchman even registered more shots per match than Lukaku’s 2.5, although the Belgian striker was more accurate. A large number of those efforts came from outside of opposing penalty areas but if Pogba does earn a more advanced role the percentage of those taken inside the box would likely increase.

IN THE MONEY

On the whole, Pogba offered better value than any of Manchester United’s regular starting attacking assets last season. His points-per-match (ppm) of 5.1 could not be beaten by anyone at Old Trafford. The more expensive Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) came in at 4.9 ppm, Lukaku’s was 4.76 ppm while Lingard, while cheaper, had a points-per-match of 3.87. Even if Pogba retains his position in deeper midfield he could still prove better value across the season than Sánchez and Lukaku who are £2.5m and £3.0m dearer than him respectively.

Salah, Tosun, Agüero and Robertson appear to be your consistent core. I own all 4.

I found more value with a cheaper 3rd striker and a boosted defence and midfield.

"No Salah" isn't exactly enlightening advice. Personally think it's unimaginative crap 😆 I try to tailor my advice to the manager who's posting the team. I'm not going to just tell everyone who my favourite player(s) is and expect that to be useful.

        This.
Not tailoring the advice(and not stating the purpose of the team posted) is one of the biggest problems on this site when it comes to interactions between posters

True. You're right. But if someone thinks thay Salah is a must have and see that obvious mistake so he post that as an advice.
If you see a team with 2 x 4.0 GK would you say its a mistake or just say that's fine?
To be honest my first draft was with no Salah 😉

You're going to tell them that they might want a 4.5 GK instead, because the 4.0s aren't likely to start. You're not going to tell them that they can't win FPL without DDG.

In that case, it's also clearly an oversight by the manager, which as Hotdogs points out below, is almost certainly not the case with 99-100% or the No-Salah RMTs.

Seems like you're looking for an excuse to lazily block discussion on someone's team in the search for upvotes. It's just not very cool. How hard is it really to consider the best way to get points without Salah in the team for GW1? Just play the game of thought, it's fun. 😀

Yeah, Im lookin for upvotes a lot 😆
For me he is a must have at least in gw1 (perfect captain) or maybe first 2-3 games as later you can easy downgrade. Other way around can be tricky.
Thats my advice..not a law, just MY ADVICE 🙂

They are asking for advice about their team having already made the conscious decision to proactively exclude Salah, it’s not as if they just forgot or did not know that Salah existed - the polite response is to comment on the team accepting there is no Salah ... or don’t comment at all 🙂

      1. Lone Wolf FPL
        • 10 Years

Why don't you say "No ____" for every player you have in your team, but the poster doesn't, if that's you're logic.

"No Salah" isn't feedback about any of the players in the 15. It's non-feedback about one of the hundreds of other players in the game that he/she doesn't own!

If for me few picks look like a must I will make that advice to anyone cuz thats my advice as I convinced thats the way to go.
I wont make any false comment sayong something that I dont really thinks.

Not all picks are the case here as many choices arent that obvious (for me) for example I can say that rotating GK is ok but Im going Ederson + 4.0 but if someone post a team with DDG and Allison I will always say its a bad idea.

We need a hot topic about No Salah teams and risks involved with that strategy. One big discussion might help. And anyone asking about his team without could just ask in RMT: "Besides not having Salah, what else should I change?"

Yeah but it's a shame to have to treat everyone as babies, trying to manipulate them into not trolling you 😀

Yet "Besides not having Salah" is likely to be seen as an invitation for trolling anyway.

See my question about captaincy yesterday: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/07/19/one-week-until-wasting-your-wildcard-book-release/?hc_page=1#hc_comment_18382625 FFS ha become a Salah-owners club, and many who themselves get annoyed by trolls end up becoming them without realising it.

More evidence of the obsession: The link I posted has just been turned into a a Hot Topic (appreciated, thanks!), but it has been given the title "CAPTAINCY: SALAH, SANCHEZ, OR SOMEONE ELSE?". This is rather weird considering the fact that the post is explicitly about captain options who aren't Salah or Sanchez.

We already know that most people think Salah is the best captaincy option. This title just puts me back in the firing line of "Obviously SALAH" trolls, as it suggests I don't think Salah is an obvious captaincy pick. I'm sure it wouldn't be a HT if I genuinely asked the question "Salah, Sanchez or someone else for captaincy?"! 😆

It should be called something like, 'Best alternative/back-up captaincy options for GW1/GW2', because that's what it's about. It's just a thought experiment, but even the HT creator(s) wants to make it about Salah. :/ It almost seems like an intentional troll by a moderator tbh 😆

'No Salah' is a valid response but also a bit lazy.

'No Salah' and then going on to talk about the rest of the team, the players they have instead of Salah, etc is valid and less lazy 😀

But yeah, of course if someone thinks Salah is 100% necessary they can't exclude that from their answer to a RMT (and we encourage RMT responses). It's just adding something more is important because the Salah yes/no question is something surely the manager has thought about

          I won't be deleting those!

Not only would that be a lot of work, I also wouldn't say those comment have no value, just not as much as they could - it shows the user who posted the initial comment that the responding user thinks the team is fundamentally flawed, and kind of explains why. Although that reason isn't revolutionary it is something 🙂

If I were blow the thing out of proportion and over analyse it (which wouldn't be out of character), I would say that banning "lol @" posts is a restriction on language use, and therefore a kind of authoritarian move by FFS.

On the other hand, commenting "No Salah" is not about restricting language use, but about restricting thought. It's about shutting down the discussion, because there is apparently only one valid perspective. Allowing this kind of trolling is putting power in the hands of thought police.

            Interesting.....

Also, the target of "lol @" posts tend to be footballers and teams. Banning these posts has no effect on opinion of the subject. Someone can just post something else negative about it, and they would have a right to do that.

On the other hand, the targets of "No Salah" trolling are the FFS poster and the poster's ideas. These targets are worth protecting in this community. By banning "No Salah"-type trolling, the poster and his ideas cease to be a target, as the troll is forced to write something less dismissive or scroll past.

Finally we would have a utopia where the people are free to think and speak how they like, which would be more productive concerning our FPL management game. All we need is a restriction on restrictions 😉

Geoff knows my thoughts on the topic but I'm of a similar mindset to Deu, despite having Salah in my team.

We have people new to FPL, on their first season, making their first draft, and people are plainly rude enough to just write "No Salah" or "No Salah 0/10".

Jesus people, have some compassion. We're a community. Offer help. If you think they need Salah, sure! Suggest what you'd change. But right now if you post at the wrong time you forgot your right to getting feedback purely because you elected to be in the 50% without Salah.

Everyone has player preferences, and we need to consider that when rating teams.

Otherwise, my response would just be, “you should change your whole team to my team because I have the best team. Here is my team...”

I generally try to avoid commenting the obvious, “no Salah”, and only comment with any obvious errors, like injuries or potential transfer implications, or otherwise useful feedback.

Nobody can be sure whether going with Salah is right or wrong, especially at his price tag.

Having said that, check my post history and I’m probably as guilty as the rest. We all probably have an irrational like or dislike for certain players and strategies in this game.

It's funny to read through the comments and see how much/many people people despise "lol @" posts because they are boring, lack imagination and bring no content to the site 😆 (in fact, this is the justification for banning them). Reminds me of another type of post which is apparently a-okay...

I do understand the points he scored last year.

I jut cant make these finite statements as you do, i just dont know.
