Great Expectations

Fresh from scoring in the World Cup final and winning the coveted trophy with France, Paul Pogba (£8.0m) could be about to record his best ever season with Manchester United.

The midfielder may miss the first few weeks of the campaign but across the course of 2018/19 there is great potential for him to be an important Fantasy Premier League asset.

A thigh muscle injury between September and November restricted Pogba to just 27 appearances for the Red Devils last season, but he still managed to record his highest ever FPL score of 138 from six goals and 13 assists. No United player was the provider for more goals and only Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) was involved in more than him.

We’ve had a look at some of the reasons why we expect Pogba to improve on that over the next 12 months, even if he will miss the first few weeks of the campaign through extended World Cup leave.

NEW POSITION

The arrival of Fred (£6.0m) at Old Trafford should allow Pogba more freedom to commit to attack this season. With the new signing potentially sat alongside Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) in holding midfield, Pogba will have less defensive responsibilities to concern himself with. Although it must be said that he particularly shone in a slightly deeper role for France next to N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) and Steven N’Zonzi in the World Cup final. At the same time, Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) earned Jose Mourinho’s favour playing as the central attacking midfielder in 2017/18 and Pogba may have to displace him if he hopes to play further up the pitch.

SHOTS FIRED

Pogba clearly has an eye for goal and should surpass his previous goal tally of six this season. Only six midfielders had more shots last season, despite him only playing 27 games. In fact, out of the Premier League’s most trigger happy midfielders in 2017/18, only Mohamed Salah (4.0) and Alexis Sánchez (2.83) averaged more shots per game than Pogba’s 2.81. The Frenchman even registered more shots per match than Lukaku’s 2.5, although the Belgian striker was more accurate. A large number of those efforts came from outside of opposing penalty areas but if Pogba does earn a more advanced role the percentage of those taken inside the box would likely increase.

IN THE MONEY

On the whole, Pogba offered better value than any of Manchester United’s regular starting attacking assets last season. His points-per-match (ppm) of 5.1 could not be beaten by anyone at Old Trafford. The more expensive Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) came in at 4.9 ppm, Lukaku’s was 4.76 ppm while Lingard, while cheaper, had a points-per-match of 3.87. Even if Pogba retains his position in deeper midfield he could still prove better value across the season than Sánchez and Lukaku who are £2.5m and £3.0m dearer than him respectively.

Any thoughts on this lot? Not getting Salah before you mention it

    Foster
    Coleman Mendy Robertson
    Martial Sane Mane Hughes
    Aguero Firmino Zaha

    Pickford Douglas Tomkins Westwood

    Points of consideration

    Mkhitarayan over Martial ?

Downgrade Pickford to a 4.5 and upgrade Coleman to B.Davies

      I'd do the goalkeeper downgrade.

I'm glad you've gone Firmino and Mane when you've got no Salah.

I think Mkhi will play more minutes over the season but not sure he will in the first few gameweeks. Martial a definite transfer to do quite short whereas I don't think Mkhi is as such so up to you on that one.

I like it and yeah I would do the Ben Davies thing.

If Coleman starts to go wild it's always easier to downgrade than upgrade. Plus them first 2 fixtures - he's nailed in my side.

I understand you are not getting in Salah, but may I ask why?

Other than that, I'm a fan of the rest of the team. Maaaaybe Tosun over Zaha due to strong everton fixtures + Zaha's position on the wing.

Choose either Auba or Aguero in my opinion. Firmino's first 3 games are pretty nice. I would go him and upgrade Kamara or one of your cheap midfielders.

Thanks. I was also thinking the same but the problem is I don't really trust any 6 and below striker. Again not sure about any 6.5 to 5.5 mid who will guarantee out score the 5m mids.

Who will be your preferred 6 and below Striker or 6.5 and below mid?

I'm still not sure if I go with Salah or not. Especially with a great option like Firmino. I'm leaning towards no Salah. You need him to perform every single week.

    Salah + Austin + 4.0 defender
    Firmino + Ramsey + Robertson

If I look at those options I really like the Firmino one.

And in a later stage (example):

    Salah + Morata + Tomkins
    Hazard + Aguero/Auba + TAA

    C. Hold/ Something else

    Ederson
    Robinson Tomkins Cedric
    Mane Sane Lamela Martial
    Aguero Zaha Auba

Until we get more information on the return of the world cup players, I have played with the idea of making a gw1-3 (or whenever the world cup players are fit) and commit to an early wildcard, as I strongly believe most of us will wildcard in gw 1-5 regardless of what team you start out with. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the team, potential change and so on.

    Schmeichel** // 4.0
    Shaw // Clyne // Keane // Evans // Wan-Bissaka
    Salah // Mahrez // Martial // Deulofeu // Stephens
    Aguero // Firmino // Tosun

    **If Chelsea buy him

With a bit of luck, I might not even have to wildcard, but seems very unlikely though.

Strong team for the first few GWs. I'm leaning towards a 4 GW team and WC on the int break. A lot of the time people WC then to get the bandwagons etc anyway so may as well plan to get as much of a haul as possible early and commit to it.

My only concern would be Tosun. With Niasse impressing and having played under SIlva previously I've dropped him from my team so just food for thought for you as well. I'd keep an eye on pre season to monitor.

Tricky one as you definitely want them from GW3, so do you pick them for GW1 and hope, or earmark them for transfers when circumstances will probably dictate that you'll end up with bigger fish to fry.

If you have no plans for an early wildcard, then you. City and Chelsea GW1+2 obviously not the best, but unless you want to plan transfers then not a bad idea to start with them.

I actually think they'll do fine against City, but not so sure about Chelsea. Need to see what state they're in under Sarri.

Interesting to see where Emery plays Ramsey and where Mkhi stands in his plans.

If it's just for the first few GWs then B. See how Douglas settles and wait for Mkhi to have better fixtures

I might end up going with all four of those players. Maybe Ramsey for Mkhi. So a tough one. B probably more logical, but I have my heart set on Douglas so bad, not sure I could vote against him.

I'm really starting to warm to my 532 team...

    Ederson
    Robbo, VVD, Emerson, Coleman, Shaw
    Eriksen, Mahrez, Martial
    Aguero, Firmino

    Stekelenburg, Hughes, Costa, Madine

      Also still have 1.5itb...

The only reason I would possibly go 5 at the back is for value, and I need value because I'm picking Salah.

Personally not willing to go without Salah, but if you are, 532 is not the optimal way imo

Agree. Better midfield and forward options with the extra cash

Sure about double Liverpool defense and Shaw?

Other than that, looks fine. Captaincy can be an issue with that team

Quite confident, reckon Liverpool will be solid with alisson in goal and those two are absolutely nailed, shaw an early punt that can go for an Arsenal def in gw3

    Quickie:

    A) Tosun, Cairney, Douglas
    Or
    B) 4.5m fwd, Jota/Lamela, Robertson/Davies

Yeah , should have been 6 . But better value in Robbo and TAA imo

Robbo yes, not TAA, double with Robbo

6 for a new keeper would have been too much

Why should he have been 6?

Lloris, Courtois, Ederson all 5.5. See no reason for Allison to be worth more.

In fact you've said it yourself. Even at 5.5 you prefer TAA and Robertson - can't be that much of a bargain.

Top keeper and Liverpools defence was only lacking in this area. I would choose him over DDG , so worth at least as much

    A) Auba, Wood, Ramsey
    B) Laca, Firmino, Cainrey

Wood could be Mitrovic, assuming same price
Cairney could be any 5m mid, Costa in the running there
I have Salah and Robertson and no arsenal
