Great Expectations

Fresh from scoring in the World Cup final and winning the coveted trophy with France, Paul Pogba (£8.0m) could be about to record his best ever season with Manchester United.

The midfielder may miss the first few weeks of the campaign but across the course of 2018/19 there is great potential for him to be an important Fantasy Premier League asset.

A thigh muscle injury between September and November restricted Pogba to just 27 appearances for the Red Devils last season, but he still managed to record his highest ever FPL score of 138 from six goals and 13 assists. No United player was the provider for more goals and only Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) was involved in more than him.

We’ve had a look at some of the reasons why we expect Pogba to improve on that over the next 12 months, even if he will miss the first few weeks of the campaign through extended World Cup leave.

NEW POSITION

The arrival of Fred (£6.0m) at Old Trafford should allow Pogba more freedom to commit to attack this season. With the new signing potentially sat alongside Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) in holding midfield, Pogba will have less defensive responsibilities to concern himself with. Although it must be said that he particularly shone in a slightly deeper role for France next to N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) and Steven N’Zonzi in the World Cup final. At the same time, Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) earned Jose Mourinho’s favour playing as the central attacking midfielder in 2017/18 and Pogba may have to displace him if he hopes to play further up the pitch.

SHOTS FIRED

Pogba clearly has an eye for goal and should surpass his previous goal tally of six this season. Only six midfielders had more shots last season, despite him only playing 27 games. In fact, out of the Premier League’s most trigger happy midfielders in 2017/18, only Mohamed Salah (4.0) and Alexis Sánchez (2.83) averaged more shots per game than Pogba’s 2.81. The Frenchman even registered more shots per match than Lukaku’s 2.5, although the Belgian striker was more accurate. A large number of those efforts came from outside of opposing penalty areas but if Pogba does earn a more advanced role the percentage of those taken inside the box would likely increase.

IN THE MONEY

On the whole, Pogba offered better value than any of Manchester United’s regular starting attacking assets last season. His points-per-match (ppm) of 5.1 could not be beaten by anyone at Old Trafford. The more expensive Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) came in at 4.9 ppm, Lukaku’s was 4.76 ppm while Lingard, while cheaper, had a points-per-match of 3.87. Even if Pogba retains his position in deeper midfield he could still prove better value across the season than Sánchez and Lukaku who are £2.5m and £3.0m dearer than him respectively.

Set and Forget 4.5 GKs, which one do you think is best long-term?

    A) Fabianski
    B) Patricio
    C) Ryan
    D) Lossl
    E) Other (which one if so)

Fabianski will probably get the most saves I wouldn’t be expecting many CSs at that price

you think so ? Matt Ryan 13 less saves last season, surely Fab is in a team that suffers less shots on goal now?

How come? If Pogba is back for GW3, then you’ve had a 7m placeholder playing against City and Chelsea.

If anything you should be trying to get Mkhi in at GW3.

I am curious why Ramsey seems to be the Arsenal mid of choice for so many.
Mkhi seems more an attacking threat, no?
Definitely likely to play more minutes.

Ramsey more likely to be a regular starter, gets in the box a lot despite a supposedly deeper role and has awesome points per game stats, just had a bit of an injury problem last year.

It's his stats from last season. Formation change might seriously limit this, with Ramsey deployed further back. However he will still score a lot of goals imho.

1000%, more of a key player, has free kicks, corners, has had many better seasons fpl wise more recently compared to theo and there is potential for him to have pens. As an Everton fan, i'm expecting Siggy to have a big season

Difficult to know as we haven't had a pen with Siggy Baines and Tosun on the pitch, and rooney not on the pitch. The pen taker is between these 3 and it is also likely we will sign a left back to replace baines, which puts it down to Sig or Cenk.

I think we'll sign a left back to replace Leighton; i can see them being very good for attacking returns however i'm still unsure we will be that good at the back to justify a 5.5m price tag. I'm personally going without Coleman for now.

            • 16 Years

Would any left back signing not be more of an understudy to Baines though? I thought they wanted cover rather than a replacement, Baines when fit is still a damn good left back, he’s just more injury prone now?

How are Arsenal expected to line up?

    433?

    Leno
    Bellerin / Mustafi / Sokratis / (Kolasinac/Monreal)
    Ramsey Torreira Xhaka
    ? / Laca / Auba

If this is the case only one of Ozil and Mkhi can start.

I’d have thought he’d be dropped for Torreira.

Then Özil slots in with Mkhi On RW.

Ozil is very lazy and Ramsey gets forward so often, can see lots of goals conceded if Torreira is paired with those two.

I’d say Ransey is enough of a workhorse to get back and fill in next to Torreira.

Özil won 5 out of last 6 German player of the year awards in exactly that role for the national team.

I follow your reasoning. You'd think Ozil would start because he's a good player but Emery does like a high-press. If he's to be believed about Ramsay having a big role, then I'd have thought your line-up above is pretty close, with Mkhi and Ozil battling for that final spot. Can't see him putting Mkhi or Ozil in central mid. And he's always played 4-3-3, no?

Could of course drop Laca and play both Ozil and Mkhi. But I see Ramsey and Auba as the two-most-nailed. Could be wrong, of course.
