Amid the never-ending discord between supporter, manager and much-maligned owner, Newcastle United’s 2017/18 campaign was one that any newly promoted Championship club would be happy to emulate.

Having bounced back from their relegation in 2015/16 at the first attempt, the Magpies finished tenth in the Premier League last season and only fell into the drop zone on two occasions throughout the season – one of which was on the opening weekend.

United had the seventh-best defensive record in the top flight (conceding four fewer goals than Arsenal) and the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Martin Dubravka offered excellent value in Fantasy Premier League, priced as they were at £4.5m.

Ayoze Perez, meanwhile, was one of the stand-out budget forwards in the second half of the season, scoring six goals in the final eight matches of the season.

Price hikes for Lascelles, Dubravka and Perez, a lack of investment from Mike Ashley, and awful fixtures in the first eight Gameweeks will likely deter many FPL bosses from purchasing any Newcastle assets initially. However, Benitez’s ability to make his squad greater than the sum of its parts means that a handful of their budget picks are worth considering once the fixtures ease up.

In-depth data on Newcastle’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

He is currently - just need to watch for transfer activity.

Apparently he is a slightly worse version of Douglas - inferior delivery, but a good option at the price.

Just FYI, I didn’t write it, I just found it, and preferred it to the FTS page because it offers explanations.

With new managers, new players, and new tactics coming in, it’s probably difficult to be 100% accurate with this sort of thing (even though Palace have had none of those things!)

I think AWB rotates well with Daniels’s (I can’t remember off the top of my head) and he’s 4M which gives you an extra .5 to play with.

          Team looks strong though.

I used to think that, then I did some calculations and it turns out he is. Certainly a Salah-free squad looks better on paper. Question is, do you really want to turn down 300 points from one player? That's 600 if captained which is about 25% of the points you need to get a really high rank.

Plus, if you bring him in with 2FT, it probably means you'll also bring in bench fodder, whereas getting him now means you can build a decent and balanced squad around him.

Same every pre-season, the top player from previous one is touted as essential by everyone, until said player fails to live up to his previous high standards. Last Season it was Aguero, season before that it was Mahrez.
Trick is to find the player that will be this season's best performer before everyone else. (Aubameyang)

Not sure about Bailly. He looked great a couple of seasons ago, was not quite as strong last year, plus had a massive injury.

Man Utd looking likely to sign a new centre back. If they don’t, come deadline day, then perhaps Bailly would be the way to go. But right now he’s as risky as Shaw.

Not sure i'd want to pay for an 11.0 forward who is playing on the wing. Lacazette at 9.5 looks better value IMO

Have to see how they lineup nearer the time but yeah I get your point. I won’t be having any Arsenal assets until gw3 anyways

Lot of great players play at left wing and still have power bloody aura to fear defenders.

If you want some name, they are like Jota. Not so good? Then Neymar, Ronaldo and the most greatest left wing ever ia Thierry Henry at Barca.

Players like them cut inside like Messi (Messi from right position), they are not make so much crossing like coventional RM or LM .

I think Auba is the one of the biggest contender to challenge Salah.

Similar to last season when Laca was on the field, plays out wide left of Laca but still very very dangerous. Wouldn't be put off by it in the slightest, class act, although I'm starting with Kun!

My defence 6.0 / 6.0 / 5.5 / 5.5 / 5.5, feels a little wrong but fortune favours the brave. Premium five atb to start the season!
Nailing all the price points in midfield too, 13.0 / 9.0 / 7.5 / 6.0 /4.5 and with 0.5itb I kind of like my structure and it's flexibility.
My only issue is I'm kind of committing to just the one premium striker (Kun/Auba) plus a mid-price, although hoping Arnie will prove to be a set and forget second forward in my team!
Do you give much thought to structure and balance when it comes to selecting your GW1 team?

You're always going to bench one player 5.5 + which doesn't feel particularly effective

True but it's nice to have a good first sub also that has a chance of a decent score if/when coming in. Its something that's a tad annoying alright though.

Sounds like your going to have a lot of money sat on the bench, I would downgrade one of those defenders to Wan-Bissaka and balance it out a bit more.

Fair but the other side of the argument is that with the likes of Mendy, Mahrez & Aguero in my team, I like the idea of having a good first sub (Pereyra atm) who can come in and possibly haul?

Morning lads. I've had Mkhi and Auba in my team since the the start. Now I'm wondering if one of them should go.

    A) Auba + Mkhi
    B) Aguero + Mkhi
    C) Auba + Martial (also Alonso > Mendy for 0.5)
    D) Auba + Keita (same as C)

    Cheers

Mikhi is so inconsistent. His price is great though. I'd be tempted to watch Mikhi in his first two tough fixtures and start with Martial where he's nailed, with the view of switching them when United's WC players return and arsenal's fixtures improve

      Arny and Wood.

But you should find 0.5 for Arny and Tosun.

Will be funny if Salah blanks GW1 when all the Salahless teams come out of the woodwork with lol@Salah and 'told you he's overpriced' type posts.
But seriously guys if he does blank in the first 2-3 games would you get rid?
If he's looking sharp but not delivering points, how long would you stick by him?

His fix are poor GW5 to GW9 so if he doesn't deliver in the first few games there could be a Salah firesale 😉

Even if I own Salah, I'll be posting that.

With Salah price and fixtures I will give him 3 GWs.

I made that mistake with KDB last season, shipped on a gw4 wildcard then he started killing it.

If Salah does blank for the first 2/3 games as long as he’s getting the chances and in the positions to score then I’d hold

At least 5/6 weeks. If there were other options which were smashing it I would consider (E.g. Sanchez was tearing it up). I would probably keep the money in the bank for a bit though just to make sure i didn't get caught out of he picked up form again.

Lovren unlikely to make the start of the season and Kola might lose out to Monreal in a back four.

      I’m on Douglas and Shaw.

Hopefully Trent will feature regularly. My eyes are on him. Lovren also could be an excellent shout. Liverpool’s defence is priced so much more kindly than someone like Spurs.

Kola I will also monitor. Poor opening fixtures and a new manager are the biggest question marks on that dude.

Thoughts on rotating Cairney & Ralls for the fourth mid?

Both just 5m, should be on penalties and provides funds to load up on defense and up front.
