England World Cup influence on FPL transfer market shifts

Some Fantasy Premier League managers may have let England fever take over a little too much in their preparations for the new season this summer.

That’s because the ownership levels of Jordan Pickford (£5.0m), Kieran Trippier (£6.0m) and Harry Maguire (£5.5m), stand-out performers at the World Cup, have surged in the last two weeks.

Such trust may prove to be misplaced as the trio are currently in danger of missing Gameweek 1 after returning to training later than their respective team-mates.

Trippier (24.8 percent) and Maguire (21.2) are now the two most popular defenders in FPL after just two weeks of the game being open.

The pair are clearly responsible for the two percent dip in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s (£5.0m) ownership, which has pushed him from first place to third when it comes to popularity among defenders.

Marcos Alonso (£6.5m) remains on 17 percent despite his role at Chelsea jeopardised by the arrival of Maurizio Sarri.

Jan Bednarek’s spell as the most fashionable £4.0m defender has come to an end, presumably due to Southampton’s signing of Jannik Vestergaard (£5.0m). The new holder of that position is Scott Malone (£4.0m) with 11.1 percent ownership, although he appears to be the second-choice left-back behind Chris Lowë at Huddersfield.

Meanwhile, Aaron Wan-Bissaka has started both of Crystal Palace’s friendlies so far and resides in just 2.6 percent of squads.

Pickford’s rise up the charts may be the reason that David De Gea (£6.0m) has seen his lead at the top of the goalkeeper popularity contest trimmed.

The Spaniard enjoyed 34.6 percent ownership two weeks ago but now sits in just 31.6 of squads. Alternatively, the drop-off may have been caused by Jose Mourinho declaring that he was unlikely to use any World Cup players in the first few weeks of the season.

Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) remains in second place with 24.7 percent ownership but has lost two percent since our last check.

Just below the now third-place Pickford is Ederson (£5.5m) whose ownership remains stable at 17.4 percent, while Nick Pope (£5.0m) has lost two percent.

In midfield, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) remains comfortably the most popular player on the game, in 46.5 percent of squads.

Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) is in second place with 27.1 percent ownership with the much cheaper Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m) is the third most popular (21.4).

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s (£11.0m) strong start to pre-season, scoring five goals in the first three matches, has him climbing up the forwards charts. He is now in fourth place with 24.2 percent of managers backing him for Gameweek 1, dislodging Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m).

Top two Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) and Harry Kane (£12.5m) seem to have been the most fashionable sacrifice for managers getting the Arsenal man. Both of them were on roughly 39 percent ownership two weeks ago, they now have 37.8 and 33.6 respectively.

Not anymore - they have got some Castro player on loan I think. We are down to Peltier and AWB for possibly playing 4.0s

Jonny is a left full, so Bennett should be okay for now, unless he's brought in to play LCB in a three.

Douglas could be less of an option though, if it happens.

He can play across the whole back 4, including CB. Which makes me think he's taking up a wide CB role in the back 3, in place of Bennett. Can also provide cover for Douglas and Doherty.

Finally happy with my team, lots of different price points, 15 players with a good chance of starting each game and an easy way to get Auba week 3 or 4 or 5 or whenever Aguero starts being rotated,

    Patricio, Bettinelli
    Robertson, Mendy, Coleman, Douglas, Wan-Bissaka
    Salah, Silva, Mhki, Richarlison, Hughes
    Aguero, Arnie, Wood

Thanks, I like having a decent sub or two, saves me taking points hits when someone has a short term injury.
I don't like Arsenal's first two fixtures but don't want to waste a transfer for week 3 as I'm highly likely to be getting Auba in for the West Ham fixture so might as well have Mhki from the start.

Reminds me of my team last year, but worse. Might as well go 5 at the back and downgrade 2 of the mids so you don't have to rely on Kenedy and Neves? Surely they are both going to get 2pts most weeks?

It also reminds me of your team from this year, which I've seen about 69 times now 😆

Honestly, I think this tactic is good if you're starting XI is good, but it's not. You need to get more value out of your midfield and defence. If you're willing to Captain Kane in GW1, I'd lose Salah so I could get Mahrez, 7.5 mid and 10.5m on 2 defenders instead of Daniels and Peltier.

Your worst draft so far, sorry. Pick one of the other 68 options 😉

Maybe for this to work without my suggested changes (or with) you might want to think about how to get the best out of the cheap players. Something like this could be in order (with different players, perhaps) https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/07/21/jota-a-viable-out-of-position-fpl-option/?hc_page=8#hc_comment_18392638

(some kind of 7-way rotation for you, perhaps)

It's just even more of a lottery with the cheap options. There's bound to be a gem this year in the 5-5.5 range, Neves could be the new Milivojevic this year, and there's quite a few at that range that appeal to a lot already.
The fact I have 3 mids at that price point just tells me I can easily hop onto the 'one', and suddenly the midfield looks a lot better.

        2. SEXY SOLO SAUCE

Thanks for this, appreciate the effort you put in providing feedback.
And good point about going 5-2-3, will try it out.

Every team is going to have perceived weaknesses though, and in my first XI it's Neves and Kenedy (Ryan and the 4.5 def I don't see as weaknesses given the options at that price).
And because of that I thinks it's a small price to pay to enable to the clear best 3 strikers in the league.

I think this is the season where a big hitting front 3 could be the one.

        1. Deulofail
          • 8 Years
          5 years, 9 months ago

No worries. The weakness in the XI in my view comes in the form of Neves, Kenedy, Daniels and Cedric. Most team I've seen ony have around 1 player in the XI below 5.5 (maybe 2), for instance. If you personally think they are great value, then it's less of a problem, but Kenedy's fixtures.... and Neves as a DM, right? With like scope of rotation.

One of the main advantages of this method is the ability to concetrate trasfers where they matter, the expensive options, where you get most of the points, so I wouldn't want to be jumping from 5.0 bandwagon to 5.0 bandwagon.

Compare, for instance, to my team last year:

          Alonso - Kolasinac - Trippier - Bertrand - Cedric
          De Bruyne - Walters
          Kane - Lukaku - Lacazette

Elliot | T. Carroll, RLC, Chalobah

Actually this was just a RMT variant from preseason. But there's only one or two weaknesses there, Walters (5.5) and Cedric (5.0). However they are somwat mitigated by the fact I had 3 players on the bench with good fixtures and promising to be excellent value at the time, who could rotate or replace Walters. (I ended up with four 4.5 mids in GW3. You could actaully dedicate one spot as the weak point to rotate (four 4.5 mids) and spend the rest on 10 great value players (e.g upgrade Cerec to 6.0).

Anyway, the point is that (okay subjectively but) your team looks to be made from a theoretical structur rather than the value that's available. There has to be a way to concentrate you money into better value players in the XI with fewer duffs, PLUS with a better bench. That's my perspective anyway 🙂

            How about

            Ryan
            Robertson | PVA | Coleman | Cedric
            Mahrez | Silva | Chalobah
            Kane | Auba | Aguero

            Button | Stephens | Gunnarsson | Peltier

With 0.5 to spare for you to either upgrade a 4.5 mid, Peltier or Coleman.

            Otherwise, something like:

            Ryan
            Robertson | PVA | Mendy | Cedric
            Mahrez | 7.5 | 5.5
            Kane | Auba | Aguero

            Button | Stephens | Gunnarsson | Peltier

However you play around with the money, I think you will get more points with more heavy hitters. Anyway, that's enough time spent on that now haha. I'm only enouraging you to post more RMTs!

Appreciate it cheers. I'm too scared to go without Salah though 🙂

And in your above example I'm pretty sceptical to City's mids on rotation, more so than Aguero (e.g. Pep's comments on D.Silva playing less). I personally think Aguero will start most and possibly even start with Jesus on occasion now Mendy is back.

Thus I think Salah will comfortably outscore Silva and Mahrez individually.
And then that leaves the other City mid or 7.5er of which I don't think they will score more than the Salah gap with my 5.0.

I'm basically down to 2 drafts, this one and the 3-5-2 rendition which you have seen multiple times 🙂

Interestingly the two drafts are only 5 players different. I think the Charity Shield match will help me decide to some extent.

                Thanks again.

Swap Suttner out to AWB (more likely to play regularly).

Having tried lots of drafts so far, I'm now at a pause, expecting transfers to happen and more serious friendlies to show each team's preferred XIs.
That 9/8 transfer deadline day will make for a very busy 10/8 FPL deadline preparation.
Only Salah Robertson and Auba haven't left my team so far.

At the moment I'm sticking with this:

      Ederson 4.0
      Robertson PVA Coleman Ward Cedric
      Salah Mahrez Costa Cairney Hughes
      Aguero Firmino Wood

May tweak further once Fulham sign Mitrovic if he's 6.0 or less.

I'm mostly happy with my team.
I feel I'm putting a lot of eggs in few baskets.

I've 3 LIV, 2 CRY, 3 EVE (if Richarlison transfer goes ahead), 2 MCI and then the rest are from different teams.

Half worried about Firmino. Wondering if Mane is safer which would mean I could get Lacazette instead then (but I'd lose Mahrez to get Mane)

I know it's a case of preseason team vs a team that is currently in season, but United being unable to even score against San Jose Earthquakes is pathetic. United were playing the last place team in MLS who have conceded an average of 2 goals per game and have so far gone over 20 league games without a clean sheet

Is there a mathematical formula for working out the best formation based on last season's results and this season's prices? I've mulled over this but my brain gets in a tangle.

Go get yourself an engineering mathematics guidebook. You will find a formula in it.

Copy & paste players listed by Total score into a spreadsheet.
      Add a columns (score-110)/(cost-4)
Ordering by the last one gives you a fair judgement of how much value you are adding for extra spend on each player. If the figure is less than 20 point per million you need another reason to be picking the player. (its his year)
Of course its mostly goalkeepers in the top 20 of extra value.

      Finally order by Total score.
The top 10 => 3x Fwd, 7xmids (Sadly only allowed 5x mids in the team).
      Digging down into the top 20 => 5xFWD, 11xMID, 2xDEF 2x GKP

So for top points lots of mids & fwds to swap between as they hit purple patches & naff all defenders.
Its not changed much from previous seasons.
