2017/18 was a season of mixed fortunes for Fantasy owners of Tottenham Hotspur players.

Harry Kane matched his best-ever single-season haul for league goals (technically beating it after the Premier League goals accreditation panel retrospectively awarded him Christian Eriksen’s strike in the 2-1 win over Stoke City), but will also be remembered for frustrating blanks in home matches against Swansea City, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Brighton and Hove Albion, West Ham United and Huddersfield Town. A fair share of Fantasy Premier League managers will, meanwhile, still be ruing their “Kanexit” strategy in December when the England striker punished his deserting owners with back-to-back hat-tricks.

Christian Eriksen‘s total of 11 strikes (one subsequently scratched) was his best goal haul in a Premier League season, but the Danish international recorded only half of the assists (ten) he had managed in 2016/17.

Dele Alli scored 50 fewer FPL points in 2017/18 than he had managed the previous campaign, with his goal tally (nine) exactly halved. Even Son Heung-min‘s goal (12) and assist (eight) returns, as impressive as they were, were down on 2016/17.

Spurs’ wing-backs, most notably Ben Davies and Kieran Trippier, coupled their clean sheet prospects with regular attacking returns but were at the mercy of Mauricio Pochettino’s irksome rotation policy on the flanks; not one of the Lilywhites’ four full-backs started more than 26 league matches in 2017/18.

The north London club are, at least, a comfortingly unchanging presence amid this summer of big-money moves and new manager recruitment. At the time of writing, Spurs were one of only two Premier League clubs – the other being Burnley – who have yet to sign a player during the current transfer window.

Pochettino will be taking charge of Spurs for the fifth successive season, meanwhile, and we can expect the same brand of quick-pressing, attacking football he has cultivated in his four years at White Hart Lane. Although Pochettino occasionally rolled out a three-man backline in 2017/18, we will inevitably see more of the Argentinean coach’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system again this season.

In-depth data on Spurs’ season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

    Is this team okay?

    Foster, Fabianski
    Coleman, Baily, Alexander-Arnold, Douglas, Cedric
Salah, Eriksen, David Silva, Cairny, Chalobah
    Aubameyang, Firmino, Quaner

    Help is appreciate. Thank you!

Not sure would go with Eriksen from the off - not the best fixtures and WC involvement. Better options at that price.

Any consensus reached on the best £4.5m bench fodder midfielder?

I like what I saw of Chalobah last season but I don’t think he’s featured in any pre-season matches yet? Understandable I suppose given it was such a bad injury.

Cheers. Ward’s got a few goals in pre-season hasn’t he. If he’s nailed then he might be my man. Ideally I’d like Chalobah but I’ll have to wait and see on his fitness.

Very lazy response. I'm yet to see a Salahless team that is a 0/10 🙂

Personally I don't like the Daniels or Townsend picks (prefer Cedric and McArthur) but can see why you'd go there.

I also prefer just Salah to both Firmino and Mané - although I can see that working out ok, I just believe Salah is an impressive captaincy option who will be key with those early pool fixtures.

Some concern at TAA rotation with Clyne/Gomez, though I'm pretty tempted to go Salah/Robertson/TAA and just accept the defensive rotation at that price point.

      Don’t need a 5.0 and 4.5 keeper rotation-waste of 0.5. Go with either a 5.5 or 2x 4.5

Could work out really well. If Salah blanks in GW1 & your captain hauls you will straight away be about 25 points ahead of most of the game. But the opposite is true if Salah hauls at home to West Ham & your captain doesn’t match him. It’s a catch 22!

Yup. Assist count far from flattered him last season given the number of chances created and about as nailed as nailed can be.

Davies I like for the first two games (as a NUFC fan, can see a repeat of the opening-day score last season) and always a chance he could pick up a CS at Man Utd too.

His fixtures are poison after GW4 allright, but if he’ snotched a few goals by then we can take a blank or two and he could always fluke a goal or assist in the tough games, plus should get some price rises by then hopefully

What is the general consensus on having an 11.0m striker if you have Salah? Are most folks going for it?

I can’t see the value in it myself as I want to captain Salah for all of his games, and I really don’t want an 11.0 I can’t captain. I’m very aware this could be a blind spot, but I just can’t setup with an 11.0 striker at the minute. Hopefully it doesn’t come back to bite me.

Good to see I’m not going mad then. The amount of teams I’m seeing with one or both of Kun/Auba alongside Salah suggests it is wildly popular on here to have at least one 11.0, but I’m just interested in the thought process.

        1. Oooof
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 29 days ago

It’s a tough decision, but I think if you try to avoid it and shove in Auba or Aguero or both then you end up with Salah plus a weak midfield

          1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
            • 16 Years
            8 years, 29 days ago

Plus I think Laca, Firmino, Arnie, Tosun, Zaha, Austin & all the OOP Mids if you’re going for 5 in midfield offer a lot of alternatives to Auba who should stay within a few points per week of him, and if he’s never Captained, a haul can’t really hit you that badly.

In saying that he’ll probably get 100 points now in his first 4 games.

          I have all three.

In the case of Salah and Aguero...they could be in hattrick territory very early on with those fixtures.

Auba's more long-term than Aguero, who I'll get rid off after the nice fixtures end around GW10 and Arnie comes into a green patch.

Got a feeling Auba might be great from the off too.

Rest of my team hasn't suffered too much as a result either...a lot of good 6-7m options and premium defs.

Would you not feel like vomiting on your carpet though if you see a 13.0 player in your team who isn’t captained? Especially if he then scores a brace? Which he can do in literally every one of his 38 fixtures

I like Auba's ceiling, captaincy or not.
One is enough for me. Salah, Auba/Kun + 2x 9.5 mids (currently Mahrez and Eriksen) is pretty achievable.

I think one 11.0m striker is feasible with Salah. I won’t cap Salah in GW5, 7 & 8. Auba covers those fixtures perfectly (new, WAT, ful).

I think Salah scored away to spurs last year though for the GW5 fixture doubts? I think his first 6 fixtures are all very easily captainable... wildcards will surely be in force after that then with the Second international break around GW7

That's a nice team all in all. The Spurs and Burnley defence stand out as a potential weak spot. I feel Europa league will significantly hamper Burnley and Spurs fixtures with a depleted side are not great.

Thinking I may change Davies to Mendy a few weeks down the line if the latter shows himself as nailed. I do fancy Burnley as a reliable option to start off with their fixtures though, should take a few months for EL fatigue to set in.

He was never going to survive in the Portuhampton team with a name like Barry Douglas.

Not sure I would double up on Liverpool defence, recoup £1m, and Sanchez not worth it, and frontline needs investment

Ok so advise taken on board, still no Salah but squeezed in Aguero..

    Ederson/4.0
    Robertson/Mendy/Coleman/Daniels/Cedric
    Sanchez/Hazard/Mkhitaryan/Walcott/Stephens
    Aguero/Firmino/Quaner

Only issue is the bench looks a bit weak now.

Bench is fine. Maybe Daniels > Tomkins

Cheers mate, that’s what I was thinking after the below comment from BC

    2. AndyCook
      8 years, 29 days ago

No Salah to rotate Cedric and Daniels still is pretty disappointing. You’ve just used the extra money on getting overpriced players over nicely priced options in my opinion and there’s nobody I would feel confident captaining regularly

Why not just take Salah to start with and do Sanchez/Hazard > Salah/Martial?

Hazard future unclear plus I wouldn't bank on him to start the first match after going all the way to the 3rd place playoff. I really didn't see the 2017/18 incarnation of Sanchez as a 10.5M player. I'd want to see him prove his FPL worth in a United shirt before investing in him.

You can always change back after a few weeks if you see some form out of them, but for my mind you're risking losing a lot of ground early on for 2 expensive gambles here.

      Yep, he was toast anyway.

He got hooked at HT/before 60 mins a lot last season.

It’s clear he’s lost something. Combined with Bournemouth’s poor defensive stats he’s a complete no-go for me.

      Fool’s gold.

He was only really a juicy option when he had pens, 3 seasons ago. Erratic attacking returns since meant many owners benched his hauls anyway (see M.City goal last season)

None of the guys transferring in will be genuine GW1 options but they may help guide us away from options we are considering if rotation/replacement becomes a possibility. Should be a help more than a hinderance...I hope!

    I have 8 million for a midfielder.

    Team is currently

    Ederson Ryan
Azpilicueta- Robertson - Mee - Dunk - Boly

    Salah - Mane - Cairney - Jota - BLANK

    Aguero - Austin 4.5

shift Ederson to a 4m keeper, I think Ryan is enough (or for the most part you don't need both Ryan + Ederson)

then that gives you 9.5m to play with

you could have Sane, Mahrez or Eriksen
