We are delighted to announce Fantasy Football book ‘Wasting Your Wildcard‘ has now been released.

Written by regular site contributor David Wardale and fully endorsed by Fantasy Football Scout, it should help you plug the painful gap between the end of the World Cup and start of the 2018/19 Premier League season, which is not far away now.

Subtitled ‘The Method and Madness of Fantasy Football’, the book is being published by Penguin’s respected sports imprint, Yellow Jersey Press, and is packed with hints and tips from some of the best Fantasy managers out there.

But it is as much about the people as the game, with stories of glory and despair, mini-league skulduggery and humiliating failure and the strange grip the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in particular has on managers from Australia to Zimbabwe and just about everywhere in between.

There are in-depth interviews with FPL champions and Fantasy-mad Saudi princes, a comprehensive look at the eternal conflict that is stats versus ‘the eye test’ and chapters on the history of the game, the all-conquering beast that is Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and what the future of Fantasy Football might look like.

There’s also a revealing section on our very own Mark Sutherns, detailing the methods behind his successful approach to playing FPL.

Written by a fan for the fans, we think Wasting Your Wildcard will inform and entertain in equal measure, while grappling with the reasons behind why we, as supposedly grown-up men and women, cannot resist playing a game of footballing dress-up.

Order ‘Wasting Your Wildcard’ with Waterstones HERE.

Australian fans can order through Booktopia.

Siggy to a nailed attacking Chelsea player once that emerges could be an option

I’m not convinced about their defence yet.

Siggy would be the one I would stick with for now.

3 or 4 changes could still be made but look a good base of a starring team to begin the season with? Bench is just 4.5 & 4.0 fodder

    Ederson
    Cedric Bailly Van Dijk Baines
    Salah Mkhi Mahrez Sanchez
    Lacazette Tosun

    Thoughts on this team? 🙂

    Fabianski – 4.0
    Robertson – PvA – Coleman – Doherty – Bednarek
    Salah – A.Sanchez – Richarlison – Jota – Ward
    Aguero – Arnautovic – Zaha

Sanchez will become Pogba once French is 100% in the team, allowing to upgrade elsewhere (ex. one of the 7m strikers / Jota / Richarlison)

Kane is set to be back in training "soon" (see Twitter) and I believe he starts GW2 latest so, i've reviewed the captaincy rotation BASED ON FDR between Kane & Salah (IMO the 2 best options all season).

    Best fix. Opponent Other fixture
Salah West Ham (H) Newcastle (A)
Kane Fulham (H) Crystal Palace (A)
Salah Brighton (H) Man Utd (A)

My opinion is that, wait and see on Kane could work no problems. Salah excellent fixtures and could be perma C until the Chelsea game where Kane has a real fixture advantage (ignoring the Spurs:bus theory)

I can see Spurs struggling this year so will wait and see how they start off and more specifically, how Kane does, before getting them in.

FDR cumulative for the selected captain is 59 while, the other fixture set is 89 cumulative.

Unfortunately I think pricing has made Kane a very diifficult pick. I want way more than 215 points for a 12.5, like 250 minimum. Short of him scoring 35+ league goals I don’t see how he is viable. And even at 35 goals, he’s still only just going to Be scraping the 250 point mark He got 29 last year and 215 points.

I think his first full champions league season takes a toll on his premier league performances too & that’s repeating itself this year, after a long World Cup summer, I just see him being a bit jaded & possibly picking up more injuries. I’ll take my chances with Salah perma captain.

Kane in GW’s 2, 8 & 15 are the only ones I’d be behind the sofa for this side of Christmas, and Salah has Palace away, City home, Burnley away those weeks so has a chance of scoring in all of those. Plus the two lads at 11.0 offer similar threat for 1.0 less.

      1. Andy_Social

For me, there's no case for starting with Salah and Kane, and every reason to have Salah without Kane. I'm happy to captain Salah for most fixtures and will only contemplate bringing Kane in if he really starts firing. But for now, he's not worth a second thought.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 16 Years
          7 years, 8 months ago

Yeah I would say Kane only becomes viable if Salah gets a long term injury. And even then I’d probably look to Auba first, or Kun... but if Salah is injured then Kan definitely becomes a factor.

Unless & Until then, it’s a no from me Clive I’m afraid.

      2. Cok3y5murf
        • 9 Years

Finally another person who sees that Kane is overpriced. The problem with him is not goals, it's the lack of assists. He ain't getting more than 29 goals, and he got an all time low of 2 assists last season, and hasn't ever got more than 7.

If Salah and Auba deliver value for their prices this season, Kane will be irrelevant for the most part (besides DGWs and such)

        1. Andy_Social
          • 13 Years
          7 years, 8 months ago

I think if it wasn't for Salah, or if he broke his leg GW1, Kane would have high ownership due to him being perma-captain material. But Salah trumps him and you can't spunk all your cash on both.

          1. Cok3y5murf
            • 9 Years
            7 years, 8 months ago

Kane had high ownership regardless last season, but it wasn't because he was providing great value, but because there was a serious lack of options in forwards besides him. Firmino was the next best, but was streaky. Vardy was even more streaky.

He wasn't perma-captain material at all. Blanked against some of the weakest sides when everyone captained him. The best captain last season after Salah was Sterling - 12 points more than Kane having played 490 minutes lesser than him! He had over 6 double digit hauls too.

Vardy scored in 18 out of 37 matches, with 20 goals. That's not incredibly streaky at all. Would be streaky if he score 15 in 8 or something.

              1. Cok3y5murf

18 out of 37 matches, so it was probably in batches and not evenly spread out in alternate weeks or something. I don't remember exactly how often he scored, but he didn't make it to the team of the season. I guess he lacked explosiveness and some consistency. Overally, he did very well though.

From outside an FPL perspective, an interesting stat was that his conversion rate was 28% (pretty sure it was the highest in the league). So technically speaking, he was the most clinical striker in the league last season.

Generally agreed. This all rests hugely on the assumption Salah will break 250 again though at effectively the same price as Kane?

            • 9 Years
            7 years, 8 months ago

            Yes I expect Salah to get 250+. If I didn't, I wouldn't own him

            • 16 Years

I think an important factor is Salah can afford a 20% drop in output & still hit 250. Kane needs a 20% improvement to hit 250... and unfortunately 20% improvements on a 29 goal season don’t come easily.

          3. Andy_Social

The thing is, if Salah does turn out to be a second-season flop, it's an easy 1FT or 2FT to drop him for whoever is setting the FPL alight, be it Kane or Aubam or Marhrez or whoever. That's the benefit of owning the most expensive player.

Na, I try to use Pogba as a yardstick for anyone considering Keita. Pogba got 6 goals & 13 assists last year in 27 games, Keita will be doing VERY well to get anywhere near that sort of return. Keita also has the disadvan for taking up aliverpool slot that would get you more points per million from VVD, Robbo, Firmino, Mané, Salah etc.

He’s supposed to be a fantastic footballer mind you, but a bad FPL pick imo.

    Foster and Fab

Cheers, have been reading quite a bit...I'm thinking with Evertons draw the first 10 games i could take a chance on these three, Mkhit and Aub have played together before, either Wan or Tompkins are likely to play so would make decent bench options, will play Foster and Fab alternatively when at home...plus I'm thinking Robertson and Alex - Arn will feed one other plus seem potentially great scorers

Why two Liverpool defenders? TAA is not necessarily nailed on (or I would have him instead of Robertson). I also had double Palace defenders until about 20 minutes ago. Have two double defenders (Liv and Pal) could be risky. Not sold on Sane as a pick and would prefer a City attacker instead of him. Good team!

I’d say his nailed until champions league and other comps come into the picture...: then Clyne will probably play a part in some of the less important games. He does represent good value though and may be worth it

Douglas is going to Leeds, bad bench, Eriksen may not start GW1, 6/10

      Douglas is going to Leeds.

Otherwise I would say 8.5/10 if Peltier is a regular starter. Main improvement could be in having a more reliable bench.

drop Ederson to Fab and upgrade defs: PVA, Mendy/Ota, VVD.

mids and fwds are all fine. I'm going with Zaha over Arnie.

Seeing Aguero's record against Arsenal, I think he is a must have. Have very little alternatives in that price bracket.

Are we certain he will start?

Pep playing 352 last night against Liverpool hopefully indicates that's what he's planning for the season so a front 2 this year might be on the cards for them in which case Aguero will be the definition of ESSENTIAL.

He is anyway. Even if he doesn’t start he can still grab a haul off the bench.

    Ederson (Boruc)

    Tarkowski,Robertson,Coleman (Wan Bissakea, Peltier)

    Aubemeyang, Firmino (Quaner)

    Pick 2

    A. Bailey 5.5
    B. Coleman 5.5
    C. PVA 5.5

    1st round yesterday (Bailey 7, Coleman 7, PVA 8)

I would go A + B mainly since Tomkins/WanB are good options for Crystal Palace coverage.

If you don't want Tomkins/WanB then definitely get C. If you plan to rotate them then go B + C since Everton and Crystal palace have a nice rotation to start with.

If you are starting both then A + C.

Like him but can’t double up on Palace defence and Wan Bissaka too good to pass up at just £4m.

Sakho also worthy but WB allows you to strengthen elsewhere.

So it seems as though I'm tinkering every morning at the moment...

    Have gone from this:

    Foster / Patricio
    Coleman / Azpi / Ward / Shaw / W-B
    Salah / Stephens / Cairney / Martial / Mahrez
    Jimenez / Aguero / Firmino

    to the following:

    Foster / Patricio
    Coleman / Robbo / Mendy / Shaw / W-B
    Salah / Richarlison / Cairney / Mkhi / Mane
    Jimenez / Arnie / Aguero

Does the second option look more balanced? I'm also toying with downgrading Jimenez to free up another million, but I'm interested to see if he will lead the Wolves front line for 5.5...

    Cheers guys

Robbo + Mkhi > Azpi/Martial imo. 2nd option definitely looks better.

What do you guys think? 4-5-1

    Ryan (Button)
    Robo, Mendy, Coleman, PVA (Wan-Biss)
    Sane, Salah, Jota, Lamela, Rich
    Auba (Wood, Zohore)

Question for the mods. The last Norwegian article has dropped off the articles list as the article itself was written a while ago, but it is still being commented on (the league's in summer break). This makes it a bit more tricky to find. Could the articles list be changed to only have the latest of each type as, for example, there are currently four community round up articles listed, including two/three about the world cup fantasy football which has now finished? Alternatively could some articles be marked as sticky to stop them dropping off the list for where there are expected continued discussions? Cheers.

Pep said Sane is still very far from expected physical condition, dont see it being a scare of missing GW1 but still

The way I understood it there will be 3 players competing for 2 wide berths - Mahrez, Sane and Sterling. That should nail Sane for the first GW or 2 until Sterling is ready. Then it becomes a bit trickier - my intention is to upgrade Sane to Kevin at that point.

I read that he's more naturally central and should relieve his namesake Dilva of duties as Dilva's minutes are scaled own. Having said that, any talk of positions has to be taken lightly in a Pep team.

I don't. Liverpool will have 2 defenders at 5m or lower. Don't think he's worth 1m more than them for a few random assists over the season.

    1), 2) or 3)? changes you would do? 😉

    1)
    Fabianski (4.0)
    Robertson/Mendy/BELLERIN/Tomkins (4.0)
    Salah/Mane/Mahrez/RICHARLISON (4.5)
    Aguero/Arnie (4.5)

    2)
    Fabianski (4.0)
    Robertson/Mendy/DOUGLAS/Tomkins (4.0)
    Salah/Mane/Mahrez/MKHI (4.5)
    Aguero/Arnie (4.5)

    3)
    Fabianski (4.0)
    Robertson/Mendy/CEDRIC/Tomkins (4.0)
    Salah/Mane/Mahrez/MKHI (CAIRNEY)
    Aguero/Arnie (4.5)

    A) 3-4-3
    Salah * Sane * Richarlison * Hughes * (Ward)
    Arnautovic/Zaha * Kun * Auba

    B) 3-4-3
    Salah * Sane * Mahrez * Richarlison * (Ward)

    C) 3-5-2
    Salah * Sane * Mikhi * Richarlison * Hughes
    Auba * Aguero * (Quaner)
