We are delighted to announce Fantasy Football book ‘Wasting Your Wildcard‘ has now been released.

Written by regular site contributor David Wardale and fully endorsed by Fantasy Football Scout, it should help you plug the painful gap between the end of the World Cup and start of the 2018/19 Premier League season, which is not far away now.

Subtitled ‘The Method and Madness of Fantasy Football’, the book is being published by Penguin’s respected sports imprint, Yellow Jersey Press, and is packed with hints and tips from some of the best Fantasy managers out there.

But it is as much about the people as the game, with stories of glory and despair, mini-league skulduggery and humiliating failure and the strange grip the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) in particular has on managers from Australia to Zimbabwe and just about everywhere in between.

There are in-depth interviews with FPL champions and Fantasy-mad Saudi princes, a comprehensive look at the eternal conflict that is stats versus ‘the eye test’ and chapters on the history of the game, the all-conquering beast that is Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and what the future of Fantasy Football might look like.

There’s also a revealing section on our very own Mark Sutherns, detailing the methods behind his successful approach to playing FPL.

Written by a fan for the fans, we think Wasting Your Wildcard will inform and entertain in equal measure, while grappling with the reasons behind why we, as supposedly grown-up men and women, cannot resist playing a game of footballing dress-up.

Order ‘Wasting Your Wildcard’ with Waterstones HERE.

Australian fans can order through Booktopia.

    How about this

    Patricio 4.5 (Steklenburg 4)
    Robertson 6 David Luiz 5,5 Kola 5 (Sakho 5, Wan B 4)
    Mahrez 9 Eriksen 9,5 Keita 7,5 Miki 7 Richarlison 6,5
    Laca 9,5 Arnie 7 (Zaha 7)
    ITB 3

Zaha just since he is moving to a better club soon
Arnie fixture proof and what a support he has !
Richarlison is a favorite and getting his old coach and that schedule worth a punt if it can be called that 🙂

Liverpool : my thinking is that they will spread their offesive juggernaught more this season but Keita will get many many assists and CS as well.
Also awaiting what Sarri will do since their striker is probably a must have later on...

    Comments about my thoughs ?

Salah brace in GW1 and you're potentially on a -26 to start the season.

With 3m ITB why are you even taking that risk?

Eriksen to Salah and find .5 to shave elsewhere.

[Player you dont have] scores X and you are on -X for the season...

When that player is Salah and just about every serious player is captaining him, I'm right.

The 'potentially' was put in because he might captain W-B for a 38 point haul.

You are technically right but when your argument can be applied to every single player in the game then its a dumb argument.

But it can't be because only Salah will be close to over 100% EO in GW1.

Which is more likely? Are you captaining Rob Green because he might come on as a sub and save four penalties?

You tell me, I don't think it's heavily in Salah's favour though when you consider the money saved can be spread around the team.

Thanks guys and Zaha will ofcourse not stay on the bench unless I start of fresh boosting all out !
Preseason is usually not reliable but Wan Bissake and Arnie seems OK from what we've seen

Salah is not ruled out in my team thats for sure, not yet, love this build up 🙂

Bellerin and the whole Arsenal attack will flurish and they have all something to prove. I think they will get the best of Man City in the opener and if Chelseas defense isnt set yet then theyll have a field day there as well !

I'm a fairly conservative player, but imo you gotta start off with him and then re-assess after a few weeks. If he has anything like the same form as last season, non-owners are not going to have a good time.

Just to be clear lads - Auba WILL be Arsenal’s topscorer

Reading more and more stuff like « buh he will play on the left ». Doesnt matter, he will score more goals than Lacazette.

Classed as a midfielder though, and does play as a second striker. Liverpool really more a 442. If Ozil is 10, the defensive shape of a 4231 is 4411 with the player on the left covering the full back. If we played 433, PEA would be a better option.

He did just fine playing on the left in a 4231 last season.

              Defensively we were awful though.

Emery will need to instil a better defensive shape, so his position is under question imo.

Which do you feel is a better pick to start the season with, Chris Wood or Richarlison? I feel like the sensible option is Wood but the more exciting (& frustrating) player is Richarlison.

You could be a bit more specific with your third striker. And one doesn't help much

Seeing a lot of template teams- I think a pretty important consideration is not being looked at. The Home/Away Rotation within the team.

If we talk about Defences- we can see many teams consist of:
    Shaw/Bailly H A H A A
    VVD/Robo H A H A A
    Cedric/Francis H A H A A
    Bellerin H A H A A

if you re one to have a lot of the above Consider:
    Man City assets A H A H H
    Everton assets A H A H A

If these 3/4 defenders are your main assets you actually are playing all of them HOME in Gw 1 and 3 with 2 4 5 Away- not sure how one would feel with having your back line all playing Away from home every other week.

If you have a "Set and forget keeper" from any of the above teams or even Arsenal/ Spurs( due to early games being away) the problem only worsens.

Template Midfields consists a lot with these:
    Salah H A H A A
    Jota H A H A H
    Mikki H A H A A

Getting some midfield cover of the below may help- However again 3/4 mids you have will be playing Away every other week.
    Man city A H A H H
    Everton A H A H A

    Attack seems to consist of:
    Auba: H A H A A
    Firminio: H A H A A

Aguero at least gives you balance for those who are 50/50 A H A H H

The same situation arises for those who have both or with Aguero would mean every other week all 3 would play away:
    Arnie A H A H A
    Zaha A H A H A

In short- I personally think having 8/9 players who play H and then A all in 1 team is something i will try and avoid- so thought maybe this could be of use to you all.

I dont think this is relevant unless you have cheap players you want to rotate. No one should be benching Auba, Zaha, Arnie, premium defenders, Salah, City mids etc even if they play away.

The question is not about Rotation here- it is about balance.

Eg: If you are on the fence between Aguero/Auba as you have Firmino- this may help you with a decision.

I think if you told someone having: Aguero/ Zaha/ Arnie as a front 3 would mean every other week all 3 play away there would be some thought given.

I am purely pointing out that a back line of: Robo Shaw Cedric Francis would mean again every other week an entire back 4 playing Away. Maybe can consider Coleman Mendy Robbo and either Cedric or francis- giving some balance.

        Same applies with the midfield.

No, it wouldnt influence the Auba/Kun decision at all because whoever I chose would play every week, home and away, and therefore I pick the better long term options, not caring about home and away games.

But yes, it would come into play with cheaper players and especially defenders. This is the concept known as rotating defenders, which is important if you go the cheap approach.

Your arguments about balance make sense in a head to head league where you would rather have 60p 60p 60p 60p than 40p 80p 40p 80p. In a normal league its all about the better results over time.

Man City, probably repeating a lot of what’s been discussed but current questions&thoughts:
    - Assuming Ederson won’t play GW1 (bad fixture anyway), tempted to start with Allison and make the switch for those juicy fixtures GW2 onwards. One area where you have a certain starter. Tempted by Mendy for assists potential but given his lack of football I am tempted to wait.
    - Currently on Mahrez but when you literally list the options: Dilva Bilva KDB Sane Sterling Mahrez, and with KDB generally nailed, you’ve got 3 places for 5 players so possibly looking at around 60% playing time. They’ll get a lot of goals but that kind of potentially rotation is very worrying for expensive buys. How he’ll deal with the price tag and no longer being the big fish are also pertinent questions.
    - Having said all that, I’m on Aguero. I don’t quite see Jesus as an elite player (yet) and Aguero will surely start the season and get minutes and goals through the aforementioned run of fixtures. Surely Aguero staying means he regards himself as first choice, based on indications/guarantees with Pep?

Any feedback on those three lines of thought?

Why wouldn't Ederson play GW1? A half fit Ederson still better than a fully fit Bravo

I read somewhere he’s not going to be ready to play GW1. Will obviously check again closer to kick off but I don’t have a playing sub GK.

Yeah it’s an option though back up plan of sticking with Alisson is fine if necessary. 13 should be starters so hopefully huge necessity for GW2.

I agree on Mendy. I want him but want to see him play first.

Mahrez will, I think, play more than that and looks a great early option.

Jesus IS a premium player in Pep's eyes. And he's the man who counts. That said, I'm on Aguero as there's a lack of sensible options pre IB.

Yeah thanks. The side of the coin that didn’t mention I guess is Mahrez was 60 million and that surely dictates playing time somewhat.

If Jesus gets injured/has a non-prolific start then I think we are safe with Aguero. The usual goal spree v Newcastle will do!
