As the first match of the 2018/19 Premier League season creeps ever closer we switch focus to Sky Sports’ Fantasy game.

We have launched our Free League for the campaign and you can find details of how to join it below.

Here we go over the basics of the game before we delve into more detail in the coming days.

How do I play?

Just like in FPL you select a squad of players that will either earn you attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than your friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

Gameweeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Gamedays, allowing maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Also, instead of one free switch per Gameweek (and a maximum of two if a previous one is saved), the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used any time during the season, with a limit of five in one Gameweek, creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

Wildcards, or Overhauls, are also available in Sky Sports. The first one becomes available to use following the completion of Gameweek 4 and remains an option until the deadline for Gameweek 6. The second one becomes active after the final match of Gameweek 27, through Gameweek 28 and until the Gameweek 29 deadline.

In Sky Sports Fantasy you can name more than one captain in a Gameweek depending on who is playing on which day. Managers are limited to one captain per day allowing them to potentially have up to four in one Gameweek and get double points for all of them. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Gameweek, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those match days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Gameweek too.

How do you score points?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

Action Points scored
Starting XI 2
Substitution appearance 1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender 7
Goal scored by a midfielder 6
Goal scored by a striker 5
Goal assist 3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins) 7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins) 5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper 5
Man of the Match 5

Can My Team Lose Points?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

Action Points scored
Missing a penalty -3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards -1
Each yellow card -1
Each red card -3
Each own goal -2

How do Bonus Points work?

Just like FPL there are additional points on offer for other events in matches, although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below.

Tier 1 Action
Points scored
5 saves made (GK only) 2
3 tackles made (all) 2
60 completed passes 2
3 shots on target 2
Tier 2 Action
Points scored
7+ saves made (GK only) 3
5+ tackles made (all) 3
70+ completed passes 3
5+ shots on target 3

How do I play against my friends?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in Sky Sports Fantasy. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

How can I join the Fantasy Football Scout league?

As usual, we have got a league on Sky Sports Fantasy. It’s called FFScout and you can join using the code 8386881.

B for me, could backfire massively mind. I just don't believe the Salah/ Mané difference will be big enough to justify £3.5m in downgrades.

A with Zaha for me. Although I would try to find space for Mane too...
Worried about Firmino GW1 (will know more in last friendly) and Everton in general. Think Mane will score well early though

Think I'm getting there... struggling decide on a striker though.

    Patricio
    Robertson, Ward, Bailly
    Salah, Richarlison, Ozil, Sessegnon
Arnie, Firmino (or any other striker?) Zaha

    Pickford, Neves, Cedric, Wan Bissaka

RMT, and suggestions on strikers for GW1/2 welcome.

I personally would avoid Sessegnon until we know where he will play - if he plays left back that's reverse OOP which isn't great.
He is also expensive so if you want to upgrade Firmino maybe consider downgrade to a 5mil to change Firmino to Aguero/Auba??

Depends on the players, doesn’t it?

GK rotation seems a waste of .5

          Robbo, Mendy, Mee, Tomk/WB?

          Salah, Mane, Mahrez, Rich, Neves/Cairney?

          Auba/Kun Arnie Kamara?

    2. Tim T
      • 11 Years

Think that would give you as very strong midfield although you would be relying on a 5.0mil mid every week which could be 2 point central...
I'm still tempted by 2 premium mids and 2 premium strikers - say Salah, 1 other 9+ mid of your choice, Aguero and Auba

    foster (fab)
    robbo davies luiz cedric (WB)
salah mahrez(if fit) richalison (Masuaku stephens)
    aguero aubba jimenez

aubba and jimenez can be swapped for the safer option of firmins and zaha but i like jimenez and think he is could be worth a punt.

    Same template. Slightly different.

    Pickford (Speroni)
    Robbo Baily Tarkowski (AWB Bennett)
    Salah Sánchez Richar Mkhi (Wilshire)
    Kun Arnie King

Or downgrade Sánchez and upgrade a defender and king to zaha? Just looking at different options but trying to keep the same big point earners

Nice team. Defence should get you cleanies and decent attack although I'd be wary of Mkhi and Aguero's game time.
I actually like the Sanchez pick, despite Mourinho's playstyle. Cheapest he's ever been and a really good player who could start the season up front, plus an easy change to Haz/ KDB if needed

Any tips on who to change Mkhi and Kun to?

        Thinking either:
        A) Laca and Willian (assuming he stays in the Prem)
        B) Auba and Pedro
        C) Lukaku and Pedro
        D) Zaha and Eriksen

        1. Tev
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 1 month ago

Auba and Pedro for me. Like the look of Arsenal attack (despite fixtures, they've had less world cup impact than others and may surprise a few) and you'd have none otherwise. Pedro could be a massive steal but monitor the likelihood of him starting (Community Shield) and if not, there's many more bargains to be had in that price range...

Gone for it. I do like the look of auba and if things go right could have quite a few point scorers in the team. My last dilemma is:

            A) Ederson + King
            B) Pickford + Zaha

Kane is any easy fix if it turns out he won't start the opening couple of gameweeks.
Mendy is risk for reward. Should have LB/LWB nailed down now that he is fit.
Pedro generating some good pre-season form in now what looks to be an attacking game style. Will definitely be starting whilst Willian and Hazard work into the season.
            Why won't Mkhi start?

    Patricio / fabianski

I like the general idea. My only concern would be you pigeon hole yourself in terms of future transfers - difficult to change team structure without multiple transfers. Wildcard helps there though.

    Thanks for previous help...

    RMT (3-5-2)
    Ederson
    Robertson, Mendy, Bavies,
    Salah, KDB, Mane, Lucas, Pedro
    Arnautovic, Zaha

    (Speroni, Wan-Bis, Quaner, Peltier)

A weak bench, but should be a playing bench (apart from Speroni, but I'm going for a set and forget this year, with Ederson).

Will keep my eyes on pre-season and Community Shield.

If not, it gives me room to downgrade to Sane/Mahrez/Silva and upgrade somewhere else.

See above - keeping my eyes on Community Shield. If they're not looking likely I can easily downgrade to a starting City defender and midfielder.

In your opinion; what players are really going under the radar and are quite different from all the ones getting picked on here at the mo?

      Demarai Gray
      Alexis Sanchez

      Sessegnon
      Tosun
      Mane

Feel like Jota and Mane are getting picked quite a bit. The other ones make sense though

Really tempted with Maddison at Leicester.

Me too, but I dont trust Puel and the Foxes have been pretty inconsistent the last two seasons.

I think he will need Vardy’s movements in front of him to perform at his best. Will Vardy start from GW1?

It's his set pieces that look most likely to get points - especially with the height they can send up - Morgan, Maguire (if he stays), Fuchs, Ulloa, Iheanacho.

Only one of those who will play every game is Maguire though. And thats if he stays.

Would love Mina to join Leicester. Mina + Maguire at the end of Maddison’s FKs would be great.

Love the options at 6.5. Richarlison, Jota, Pedro all so good why not get all 3?

Because Everton are rubbish, Wolves are unproven (and Jota's not even on set-pieces and Pedro is a rotation risk?

Don't get me wrong, I've had all three in various drafts, but they're 6.5 for a reason. Great to leave one spot for whichever one explodes. Rich would be my choice but, yeah, Everton look shambolic.

7.5 is where the real value is, once the transfers all shake out.

Martial Ramsey or Willian, one of those will smash it this season.

I had this with the 7m bracket last season

I got all 3 of Zaha, Willian and Wijnaldum and got just one attacking return in the first 6 gameweeks, before I was forced to wildcard because of the poor team structure I was left with

that bracket is full of traps

    I'm currently on this:

    Bego / Boruc
Mendy - VVD - Coleman (Doherty, Wan B)
    Salah - D.Silva - Keita - Costa (Gunnarsson)
    Aguero - Lacazette - Wood

If no sign of Mendy this weekend, Switch to Ederson + 5.0.

If TAA plays next Tuesday, switch him in for VVD and have 1.0 to spend somewhere.

    B) Salah - Aguero - Tosun
