Fantasy Premier League managers were able to learn a great deal about how they should build their 2018/19 squads from Sunday’s Community Shield final.

While the top-flight champions looked primed and ready for a new campaign it was a less than convincing performance from FA Cup winners Chelsea.

We’ve gone over the match in fine detail to work out what the implications are for Gameweek 1 of FPL.

CHELSEA 0-2 MANCHESTER CITY

  • Goals: Sergio Aguero x2 (Ā£11.0m)
  • Assists: Phil Foden (Ā£5.0m), Bernardo Silva (Ā£7.5m)

Sergio Aguero (Ā£11.0m) is likely to receive a boost in FPL ownership this week after his brace won the Community Shield for Manchester City. Despite only returning to training last week, the striker looked sharp, fit and ready for a new campaign after only sporadic involvements with Argentina at the World Cup. He began the day in 13 percent of squads but roughly two hours after Sunday’s full-time whistle he had reached 15 percent ownership.

Aguero’s FPL pedigree combined with appealing City fixtures will continue to make him a popular signing between now and the Gameweek 1 deadline. However, there are no complete guarantees yet that he won’t be subjected to the same type of rotation Pep Guardiola operated last season, with Gabriel Jesus (Ā£10.5m) also available now. Aguero could conceivably start against Arsenal in Gameweek 1 and then be benched against Huddersfield in Gameweek 2, so there does remain some selection risk over him. Meanwhile, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Ā£11.0m) could still offer more starts at the same price-point. Although, there was also encouragement from the fact that Aguero played 80 minutes and was allowed to play roughly a quarter of an hour alongside Jesus, who came on for Riyad Mahrez (Ā£9.0m). If Guardiola does opt to use the 3-5-2 formation in the league then Aguero and Jesus could both become viable options once again.

It will be interesting to see if Bernardo Silva (Ā£7.5m) or Phil Foden (Ā£5.0m) can build on their minimal ownership this week (1.4 and 0.1 percent respectively) after both of them impressed against Chelsea. Silva, in particular, was a stand-out performer who provided the assist for Aguero’s second goal. With Raheem Sterling (Ā£11.0m) and De Bruyne still not back in training there are plenty of opportunities up for grabs in central midfield early on and Silva and Foden could provide cut-price routes into City’s attack, with that Gameweek 2 home match against Huddersfield in mind.

ā€œ(Phil Foden) ready for the Premier League, we was last season and now he has one more year experience. It’s so good for us. Right now it’s Bernardo and 10 more, but it’s about what you do over the season. In this moment Bernardo is far above the other guys.ā€ – Pep Guardiola

Mahrez had a fairly quiet introduction to life as a Manchester City player but did show some promising signs for the season ahead. He found plenty of space on his right-hand flank, proving a useful outlet for the Citizens’ attacks and was also on set-pieces in the absence of De Bruyne. It will obviously take some time for Mahrez to be completely integrated into Guardiola’s system but given that he appears to already be able to find space to provide goal threat, we can probably expect good things for him in 2018/19. Also of note was the fact that Mahrez switched to the left after Leroy SanĆ© (Ā£9.5m) went off the pitch.

The German attacker may well experience a drop-off in ownership between now and the Gameweek 1 deadline. The midfielder’s absence from Germany’s World Cup squad this summer made him a key target for Fantasy managers and he came into the Community Shield final as the third-most owned player in his classification (19 percent). However, SanĆ© managed just 45 minutes at Wembley before being subbed off with a knock – and he looked fairly sluggish too, his first-touch letting him down on more than one occasion. That performance came after comments made by Guardiola last week that he still has more work to do to be ready for the new season. His start at Wembley was actually his first of pre-season and his half-time withdrawal means that he has only accrued a total of 107 minutes.

Pre-season excitement over Pedro (Ā£6.5m) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (Ā£4.5m) was somewhat quelled by a largely anonymous performance from both players. The latter found some space on the edge of City’s box early on but was limited only to a pair of speculative shots. Both options seemed unwilling to challenge full-backs Benjamin Mendy (Ā£6.0m) and Kyle Walker (Ā£6.5m) for pace and were, therefore, not as effective as they could have been. Furthermore, Willian (Ā£7.5m) made his Chelsea return at Wembley, replacing Hudson-Odoi in the 59th minute while Victor Moses (Ā£6.0m) was once again used as a second-half substitute for Pedro, further complicating the issue of predicting who will start in the front three for Gameweek 1, let alone in the weeks beyond that.

As expected, Chelsea’s new 4-3-3 system seems to have hampered the Fantasy potential of Marcos Alonso (Ā£6.5m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (Ā£6.5m). The two of them were deployed as the full-backs in the four-man defence and were not as forward-thinking as they were last season. Obviously, we must point out that they may see more joy on the attack against lower quality opposition but the pre-season signs about their prospects are still not particularly encouraging. Anyone wanting to invest in the Chelsea defence would do better to save Ā£1.0m by going for David Luiz (Ā£5.5m), whose start at Wembley made him the most-used defender this summer under Sarri (289 minutes).

However, whether it will prove to be a viable strategy to cover the Blues’ back-line remains to be seen. Chelsea did not look at their best at Wembley and such a flat display will have given plenty of confidence to Huddersfield Town that they can cause a Gameweek 1 upset. After that it’s a new-look Arsenal for Chelsea in Gameweek 2, with a fit and firing strike pairing of Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette (Ā£9.5m) both looking good in pre-season so far.

In fact, looking to Chelsea when they are clearly still adapting to Sarri’s style may not be a sensible idea. The former Napoli manager himself admitted there is much work to be done.

ā€œWe have the idea to press, but sometimes we don’t press how we should. We have the idea to control the match but today we did not control it. Next week we have a game but I prefer just to train with the players. I arrived here three weeks ago & I’ve not seen at the moment six of the players, so it’s very difficult. It depends on me, it depends on the players, but I don’t know (how long it’ll take).ā€ – Maurizio Sarri

As was the case before the match, there remains plenty of uncertainty over who will start at centre-back for Man City at the Emirates Stadium next weekend. John Stones (Ā£5.5m) and Aymeric Laporte (Ā£5.5m) were the preferred pair for the Community Shield but both Nicolas Otamendi (Ā£6.5m) and Vincent Kompany (Ā£5.5m) staked their claims by appearing as second-half substitutes.

The full-back areas feel more settled for City with Benjamin Mendy (Ā£6.0m) and Kyle Walker (Ā£6.5m) playing on the left and right respectively in this one. With Fabian Delph (Ā£5.5m) and the injured Danilo (Ā£5.5m) the alternatives in these positions, it seems likely that they, alongside goalkeeper Ederson (Ā£5.5m) are the more risk-free investments in the City defence. Mendy, in particular, impressed at Wembley, making some good overlapping runs and backing up our recent claims that he could be a powerful Fantasy asset in 2018/19.

CHELSEA XI (4-3-3): Caballero; Alonso, David Luiz, Rüdiger, Azpilicueta; Barkley, Jorginho, Fabregas (Drinkwater 60’); Pedro (Moses 79’), Morata (Abraham 69’), Hudson-Odoi (Willian 59’).

MANCHESTER CITY XI (4-2-3-1): Bravo; Mendy, Laporte (Otamendi 86’), Stones (Gomes 94’), Walker; Fernandinho, Foden (Diaz 75’); Mahrez (Jesus 66’), Bernardo, Sane (Gundogan 45’); Aguero (Kompany 80’).

Yet they're still 33/1 with the bookies to be relegated, yet the likes of palace who also have good early fixtures are 5/1 - and many here are investing in palace.

There's def some concern over them but Coleman at least looks good - that said, I no longer have in my team!

Really afraid of Everton with their preseason performances. I know preseason means nothing. But considering they don't have the world cup issues like bigger teams things aren't working yet under new manager.

          I completely forgot about Mitrovic.
Not sure about him based on fixtures.
I would prefer Andre Gray/King for that price.
Benteke pick could be genuis with that solid base they are builing behind him at place.
I was tempted with Benteke but decided to wait and see.

yea I decided to go balanced since i feel theres lots of value in mid pricers.

Cairney is 5 and cedric 4.5, can't make up the 0.5m. If sdo best replacements?

Salah not worth the price, just destroys the rest of the team.

I'm 50/50 Auba or Aguero, went auba due to rotation. Man city disrupted pre season but they have a good draw after week 1 which worries me. If pep plays a 3 5 2 i'd start with Kun

OK you do realise the bottom 1m people are people who stop playing after the first 2 months?

Everyone said Kane was a must have at 13m last year and I didn't have him all season, I've finished top 100k overall the last 2 years.

One of the better Salah-less teams. The price points seem right. I think the Arsenal guys can be swapped for City counterparts to begin with. I'd look at a Wolves defender over Cedric but i like this team.

Yea i do like the feel of this, have basically set on the FWD and Def price points so only really mids left to tinker. Which defender do you like from Wolves? i was keen on douglas earlier.

Cannt believe people still go for 4.5M 5th mid strategy. Tt finished.
In the past we never had 5M mid who play CM or on set piece, penalty...All 4.5-5M were defensive midfielders. This season FPL tower have added more price ranges to make the game better. Cairney Ralls.... would be 5.5M-6M in the previous FPL versions.

Not that I have any of Cairney, Ralls, but to be fair, no one knew Mili had pens last season and hence the 4.5m/5m price. He's now priced 6.5m because of pens.

Is Mane overpriced at 9.5m? Historically has got around 150 points in a season. Gross at 7.0m got 164 points last season.

That logic would work in FPL Draft.

Only issue with both is that you have no space for Salah, and would have to run all 7m mids instead of a 9m

    0.5m ITB

    Ederson
    Luiz VVD Bailly
    Barkley Salah Sanchez Richarlison
    Aguero Zaha King

    4.0m, Bednarek, AWB, Stephens

Funny enough, dont like the 4.5m options. Southampton are a trap. Bournemouth undesirable (bar Ake at 5m). Would take one of the Brighton boys, but I am currently on Ryan set and forget at GK. Palace, dont want double because WB could be played for me.

I would like to but just don't see any worthwhile options at 4.5 unless you bring rot into it.

Ended up with Ederson at 5.5. and the cheapest way into the Citeh d and a 4.0. Don't like spending more than 9.5 on gks.

      1. Andy_Social

More value in 3 outfield City assets.
5.5 keeper might get a few more points than a 4.5 fixed keeper, but not enough to justify the extra 1m outlay. The right 4.5 can prove excellent value as Fabby and Pope showed last year. I'm tipping Patricio to be the one this time - if he starts poorly it's an easy 1Ft to move to another.

Fair comment but the problem is it is pure guesswork how the likes of Fab, Patricio et al are going to shape up for their new teams. I think it is better to watch first and with Ederson, you have the cheapest way into the Citeh defense. It is unlikely I am going to have three CTY attackers. If I did, there would always be rot involved. e.g. Kun this week.

Morata had no service, not much he could do. It will be a transition season for us. He is one to monitor becuase I think he could come good.

But this display was evidence of where he needs to strengthen his team too, with a new striker surely top of his list.

Alvaro Morata was again underwhelming in front of goal and failed to offer his side any sort of focal point going forward.

The Spanish striker only managed one touch in the City box in the 70 minutes he was on the pitch, a moment which also provided him with his only shot at goal - a wild first-half effort which flew well wide.

          Mendy Bailly and
VVD for me. I might get a 4th 5.5m defender and play 4 at the back with wan-bassaka on the bench as I’ve got a spare 1.5m in the bank atm.

Yeah with the set up above it leaves me with 0.5m (Mane to KDB; B. Silva to 7.5m or lower).

Just cant seem to figure out options 2-4. Is Bailly nailed?

Bailly and Lindelof looked fantastic today.. they are the only reason they only lost 1-0. Would have been a lot more without them.

New CD incoming, so prob not. Jones would be preferred.

                Ideally Maguire comes in.

Might use Bailly as a placeholder for now then at 5.5m and see what happens this week. Who would you have for the two 5.0m options? Lovren/TAA one? Mee/Tark?

Yup, they sound the best options. I like to double up, so TAA and Lovren (I actually have Robbo and VVD)!

Is Luke Shaw still a good option, or should he be shipped out given his (and that of United in general) uninspiring preseason performance?

      I like TAA at 5.0

You know, last night I tried to ship him out but found there were no better prospects at 5m. I already have 3x City and Pool assets and Chelsea are now a no-go for me. So I'm stuck with Shaw and his easy early fixtures!

        I'd prefer a 5.5/6.0 def and a 4.5; rather than Shaw at 5.0.

I've gone Robbo, Mendy, Tomkins for example.

        Defensive is 6.0, 6.0, 4.5 (4.0, 4.0)

Thanks. Was thinking about Tomkins (although I already have Wan and Zaha) or Doherty

But probably B. Just think there is more potential there, arguably fixture proof.

I'm going both. If I had to choose, I'd pick Arnie.

Morning all, have pretty much settled on my team after the CS but with one exception, the second striker. I was planning to go in with wood but not sure now due to his injuries.

Currently have it on King but thinking of Iheanacho, who's in a bit of great form and nailed for a few weeks till Vardy gets back.

    What are your thoughts?

    Rest of team

    Patricio - Fab
    Robbo - Mendy - Perreira - Schlupp - AWB
    Salah - Mane - Mahrez - Mkhi - Cairney
    Aguero - Kamara - Wood/Iheanacho/King

Forget Wood - he is always krocked.

The optimum front three at this stage look like: Firmino, Auba and Arne.
