Fantasy Premier League managers were able to learn a great deal about how they should build their 2018/19 squads from Sunday’s Community Shield final.

While the top-flight champions looked primed and ready for a new campaign it was a less than convincing performance from FA Cup winners Chelsea.

We’ve gone over the match in fine detail to work out what the implications are for Gameweek 1 of FPL.

CHELSEA 0-2 MANCHESTER CITY

  • Goals: Sergio Aguero x2 (ยฃ11.0m)
  • Assists: Phil Foden (ยฃ5.0m), Bernardo Silva (ยฃ7.5m)

Sergio Aguero (ยฃ11.0m) is likely to receive a boost in FPL ownership this week after his brace won the Community Shield for Manchester City. Despite only returning to training last week, the striker looked sharp, fit and ready for a new campaign after only sporadic involvements with Argentina at the World Cup. He began the day in 13 percent of squads but roughly two hours after Sunday’s full-time whistle he had reached 15 percent ownership.

Aguero’s FPL pedigree combined with appealing City fixtures will continue to make him a popular signing between now and the Gameweek 1 deadline. However, there are no complete guarantees yet that he wonโ€™t be subjected to the same type of rotation Pep Guardiola operated last season, with Gabriel Jesus (ยฃ10.5m) also available now. Aguero could conceivably start against Arsenal in Gameweek 1 and then be benched against Huddersfield in Gameweek 2, so there does remain some selection risk over him. Meanwhile, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (ยฃ11.0m) could still offer more starts at the same price-point. Although, there was also encouragement from the fact that Aguero played 80 minutes and was allowed to play roughly a quarter of an hour alongside Jesus, who came on for Riyad Mahrez (ยฃ9.0m). If Guardiola does opt to use the 3-5-2 formation in the league then Aguero and Jesus could both become viable options once again.

It will be interesting to see if Bernardo Silva (ยฃ7.5m) or Phil Foden (ยฃ5.0m) can build on their minimal ownership this week (1.4 and 0.1 percent respectively) after both of them impressed against Chelsea. Silva, in particular, was a stand-out performer who provided the assist for Agueroโ€™s second goal. With Raheem Sterling (ยฃ11.0m) and De Bruyne still not back in training there are plenty of opportunities up for grabs in central midfield early on and Silva and Foden could provide cut-price routes into Cityโ€™s attack, with that Gameweek 2 home match against Huddersfield in mind.

โ€œ(Phil Foden) ready for the Premier League, we was last season and now he has one more year experience. It’s so good for us. Right now itโ€™s Bernardo and 10 more, but itโ€™s about what you do over the season. In this moment Bernardo is far above the other guys.โ€ – Pep Guardiola

Mahrez had a fairly quiet introduction to life as a Manchester City player but did show some promising signs for the season ahead. He found plenty of space on his right-hand flank, proving a useful outlet for the Citizensโ€™ attacks and was also on set-pieces in the absence of De Bruyne. It will obviously take some time for Mahrez to be completely integrated into Guardiolaโ€™s system but given that he appears to already be able to find space to provide goal threat, we can probably expect good things for him in 2018/19. Also of note was the fact that Mahrez switched to the left after Leroy Sanรฉ (ยฃ9.5m) went off the pitch.

The German attacker may well experience a drop-off in ownership between now and the Gameweek 1 deadline. The midfielderโ€™s absence from Germanyโ€™s World Cup squad this summer made him a key target for Fantasy managers and he came into the Community Shield final as the third-most owned player in his classification (19 percent). However, Sanรฉ managed just 45 minutes at Wembley before being subbed off with a knock – and he looked fairly sluggish too, his first-touch letting him down on more than one occasion. That performance came after comments made by Guardiola last week that he still has more work to do to be ready for the new season. His start at Wembley was actually his first of pre-season and his half-time withdrawal means that he has only accrued a total of 107 minutes.

Pre-season excitement over Pedro (ยฃ6.5m) and Callum Hudson-Odoi (ยฃ4.5m) was somewhat quelled by a largely anonymous performance from both players. The latter found some space on the edge of Cityโ€™s box early on but was limited only to a pair of speculative shots. Both options seemed unwilling to challenge full-backs Benjamin Mendy (ยฃ6.0m) and Kyle Walker (ยฃ6.5m) for pace and were, therefore, not as effective as they could have been. Furthermore, Willian (ยฃ7.5m) made his Chelsea return at Wembley, replacing Hudson-Odoi in the 59th minute while Victor Moses (ยฃ6.0m) was once again used as a second-half substitute for Pedro, further complicating the issue of predicting who will start in the front three for Gameweek 1, let alone in the weeks beyond that.

As expected, Chelseaโ€™s new 4-3-3 system seems to have hampered the Fantasy potential of Marcos Alonso (ยฃ6.5m) and Cesar Azpilicueta (ยฃ6.5m). The two of them were deployed as the full-backs in the four-man defence and were not as forward-thinking as they were last season. Obviously, we must point out that they may see more joy on the attack against lower quality opposition but the pre-season signs about their prospects are still not particularly encouraging. Anyone wanting to invest in the Chelsea defence would do better to save ยฃ1.0m by going for David Luiz (ยฃ5.5m), whose start at Wembley made him the most-used defender this summer under Sarri (289 minutes).

However, whether it will prove to be a viable strategy to cover the Bluesโ€™ back-line remains to be seen. Chelsea did not look at their best at Wembley and such a flat display will have given plenty of confidence to Huddersfield Town that they can cause a Gameweek 1 upset. After that itโ€™s a new-look Arsenal for Chelsea in Gameweek 2, with a fit and firing strike pairing of Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette (ยฃ9.5m) both looking good in pre-season so far.

In fact, looking to Chelsea when they are clearly still adapting to Sarriโ€™s style may not be a sensible idea. The former Napoli manager himself admitted there is much work to be done.

โ€œWe have the idea to press, but sometimes we donโ€™t press how we should. We have the idea to control the match but today we did not control it. Next week we have a game but I prefer just to train with the players. I arrived here three weeks ago & I’ve not seen at the moment six of the players, so it’s very difficult. It depends on me, it depends on the players, but I don’t know (how long it’ll take).โ€ – Maurizio Sarri

As was the case before the match, there remains plenty of uncertainty over who will start at centre-back for Man City at the Emirates Stadium next weekend. John Stones (ยฃ5.5m) and Aymeric Laporte (ยฃ5.5m) were the preferred pair for the Community Shield but both Nicolas Otamendi (ยฃ6.5m) and Vincent Kompany (ยฃ5.5m) staked their claims by appearing as second-half substitutes.

The full-back areas feel more settled for City with Benjamin Mendy (ยฃ6.0m) and Kyle Walker (ยฃ6.5m) playing on the left and right respectively in this one. With Fabian Delph (ยฃ5.5m) and the injured Danilo (ยฃ5.5m) the alternatives in these positions, it seems likely that they, alongside goalkeeper Ederson (ยฃ5.5m) are the more risk-free investments in the City defence. Mendy, in particular, impressed at Wembley, making some good overlapping runs and backing up our recent claims that he could be a powerful Fantasy asset in 2018/19.

CHELSEA XI (4-3-3): Caballero; Alonso, David Luiz, Rรผdiger, Azpilicueta; Barkley, Jorginho, Fabregas (Drinkwater 60โ€™); Pedro (Moses 79โ€™), Morata (Abraham 69โ€™), Hudson-Odoi (Willian 59โ€™).

MANCHESTER CITY XI (4-2-3-1): Bravo; Mendy, Laporte (Otamendi 86โ€™), Stones (Gomes 94โ€™), Walker; Fernandinho, Foden (Diaz 75โ€™); Mahrez (Jesus 66โ€™), Bernardo, Sane (Gundogan 45โ€™); Aguero (Kompany 80โ€™).

B.Silva played very well yesterday and will almost certainly start the season for City. But, is he a better fpl option than Mahrez, who was wasteful yesterday but played more advanced and looked a bigger goal threat?

Depends on if you plan on keeping either player long term.

I was on Mahrez, but made him Mane and swapped Siggy for B.Silva. Plan on Mane -> KDB and B.Silva to 7.5m or 7.0m after.

        Yeah that’s true - B Silva looks a good placeholder for Ramsey/Mkhi in GW3.

Not convinced on Luiz. Downgrade Foster to 4.0m and have Patricio as set and forget. Westwood and Hughes would look at different options.

      Good luck with no Salah.

I don't know how you can go without Salah. 10-15 points a week and captaincy material.

Too many question marks for me: CTY players will content with rot, Zaha isn't heavy enough, weak bench.

    DDG
    Mendy, Robbo, Tomkins
    Salah, Mane, B Silva, Richarlison
    Aguero, Arnie, King

    Boruc, WB, Peltier, Chalobah

...with B Silva -> Mkhi/Rambo pencilled in for GW3. Main issue with this structure is it makes getting Auba v difficult without losing Aguero. Thoughts?

You can't have them all; you will have to lose Salah or Kun to get Auba. Either way, I think having all three of them kind of fooks up the rest of your team, so it's a blessing in disguise.

Your subs seem pretty unplayable. I would maybe get at least one that can fill in if necessary.

But your starting XI in general looks good and is well balanced. Preemptive transfers are something to be wary of however. About half the time, something unexpected happens and you'll have to reconsider your original thoughts.

Personally, I wouldn't go for Agüero and Aubameyang together anyway if you already have Salah, because you can only captain one player at any time. Premium FWDs present the worst value if uncaptained. And, if you don't want to rotate between them (they both have easy fixtures at the same time the) and have to choose one, I'd go for Aubameyang. Nailed isn't the issue but playing time is. I can see Auba getting 3000+ mins but Agüero closer to 2000 with Jesus more likely to get more and more minutes. Despite scoring 21 goals, which I don't see him overpassing this season, Agüero only got 169 pts... Aubameyang and Kane are likely the only FWDs to surpass 200 pts

Thanks - makes a lot of sense. Bench is very weak, but it looks like I should have 2 starters with decent fixtures, so I’m ok with that (although not expecting much if they do get called upon).

Saying that, one of DDG/Mendy -> Ederson/Bailly or Robbo -> TAA/Lovren would give me 1m to bolster the bench. Reckon that’s worth doing?

        1. Dyballer

Only reason I'd much rather prefer De Gea to Ederson is the save potential. City will face the fewest shots, so Ederson's points will be largely just from CS. De Gea faces promotion team level no. shots with a similar chance at CS. Mendy too is much more likely to get attacking returns than Bailly, so I would keep that duo.

Robertson on the other hand is a bit too overhyped imo. I don't think his points difference will be that different from either Lovren or TAA if they're mostly nailed. If they don't start GW1, I wouldn't be worried coz I still think West Ham will score against Liverpool. Clyne and Matip/Klavan should be on cup duty rather than play PL a lot

couple of questions for you more knowledgeable folks :
1- zaha, are we confident he won't be unsettled by transfer speculation (assuming he stays at CP)
2- ryan Bennett for wolves a likely starter at 4.0? seems to have played plenty last season
3- mahrez, reasonably confident of starting regularly?
4- sessegnon, not much love for him here, I understand he has played LB in a couple of friendlies, but surely when push comes to shove manager will use him in his most effective position? the new gareth bale?

    cheers folks

      1. Him and his manager have confirmed he's going nowhere. I won't bother too much with the transfer speculation. The deadline is on the 9th I think; so if the move doesn't happen before that there's not much he can do anyway.

      2. Are you looking to get him as a starter for your team or just bench fodder?

      3. Should start the first few games; rest depending on his performances.

      4. You're comparing Sessegnon to Gareth Bale, so I'm not replying to that.

1- as long his head is settled, I think he's a good pick
2- bench fodder, but handy if he turns out to be a starter (already have wan bissaka on bench so want one of them to be ready if I go with both)
3- he's a place holder for KDB, so a few games is fine, and can keep if he fires
4- yeah, tongue in cheek, but great attacking threat, could be golden if he can do it in prem

        thanks

Go with your gut instinct, prior to the season starting we're all mostly in the dark so don't listen to other's opinions too much. You could get off to a flyer with that side, you might also want to trigger an early wildcard, but we're all in the same boat!

Do you play Mendy away at Arsenal GW1? I have cozy home fixtures for 3 other defenders:

Bertrand (BUR) Daniels (CAR) Van Dijk (WHU)

Yeah, I'd play him in every match - a combination of his attacking threat and the fact that City could keep a CS in any fixture.

    A- Sane + D.Luiz

    B- Sanchez + Azpilicueta

I wouldn’t touch ANY of Chelsea’s defence after watching the game today. They need a few more weeks at the minimum to get use to a back 4 again.

Yeah, they've bought Meyer though haven't they. I know where you're coming from, we all love an OOP; I just think Tomkins offers more from his more traditional position.

Meyer tends to play as a No.10. Don't think they'd move him wide.

Tomkins is a great pick. However, an OOP flyer in Schlupp is mighty tempting.

I'll be honest, I love Tomkins. I'd pick him in either case! But I can certainly see the appeal of Schlupp.

How many CSs do you expect from your premium defenders?

Say, if they keep CS in 3 out of 6 games, will that be enough?

you'd be happy with 1 in 3 i reckon, but as above, you'd like to see 3-4 assists and 2-3 goals for the season if you're spending above 5.5

Ive been playing for 10 years and I've never got the goalkeeping position down correctly . If I start with a premium keeper it's usually the first place I look to downgrade when I need an attacker.. if I rotate 4.5ers based on fixtures I always bench the wrong one.. if I make transfers on WC /use a free transfer to get a new keeper based on fixtures I always get it wrong. This year I'm gonna do something different.. gonna start with Ryan and Button and I'm gonna keep them throughout the season no matter what(unless both get serious injuries). That way I get all the minutes, save points, baps, penalties saved and CS's . Ryan had 10 CS's, 124 saves, 13 baps and 2 penalties saved last year and hence ended up just 12 points short of ederson(ederson has two penalties saved too btw) and I see no reason for him not to replicate/better that season this year. Seems implausible to consider it for all season but I'm a bit fed up of my keeper situation so I might as well try. That being said.. I have to say DDG is a beast.. 172 points without a single penalty save is insane.. I'd go for him but I just know he LL be the first downgrade I make when I need to upgrade a B.Silva for eg. Lol.

I think it's the hardest position to nail down. Last year I had some success rotating "reverse home/away", in other words, always playing the away 'keeper. My reasoning was you'd typically get a higher save rate and bonus in the event of a CS. But usually I rotate based on fixture strength, admittedly with mixed success. I still think that is the way forward for defenders, at least. 'Keepers may be a special case, and I do like an away goalkeeper.

      1. Valar(Keith)
        • 16 Years

Yup for defenders rotation is key . In a tough away game their ceilings are low while their floors are about 0-1 points.. a keeper always has a high floor due to save points.. and an even higher ceiling since if a team like Brighton keeps out a top 6 side it's usually due to a hero keeper who gets tons of saves and baps

      2. Valar(Keith)

I'm gonna get over the mental block of seeing a tough away fixture for my keeper.. once I get that out of my way I'm gonna get over my keeper woes

I think the ideal 4.5 keeper would be one from a side that can keep about 10 CS's a year and concede a lot of shots at the same time and has a 4.0 backup.. anyone else apart from Ryan/Button who fits that bill? Lossl maybe? Wish patricios backup was a 4.0 .. I'd be all over that.

My best advice (as in it's worked for me in the past) is 2 x 4.5 that rotate well and just stick to the plan. You'll be tempted to switch when you see one of the big teams keeping lots of CSs but the bubble bursts. I have Fabianski and Foster and will happily rotate them for the first 6-8 GWs.

      1. Valar(Keith)
        • 16 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

Yup. Sticking to a plan with 4.5ers could easily outscore a set and forget premium keeper.. fabs/Foster have 20 CS's between them.. if you somehow manage to rotate for even 15 of those over a season the addition of saves/baps should overtake a premium keeper. Fpl towers kind of hints at this every year by underpricing premium keepers and giving us lots of 4.5 options since most would get baited by the 5.5+ keepers at a big club

I'm also on Ryan + 4.0. I'm currently on Steele, rather than Button. Who is the actual number 2?

I've assumed it's button.. at worst il swap button to Steele /vice versa on WC or with a free down the line

    5. Homo Neanderthalensis
      • 12 Years

Just get a premium keeper and don’t downgrade them no matter what.. sounds like your only downfalls have been yourself.. get upgrade funds from elsewhere.. I’ve gone for Allison (5.5m) and 4m Boruc who will never see the light of my first team. Went with DDG last year and never even considered changing him.

      1. Valar(Keith)
        • 16 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

Wish I had the patience and self control to do this.. taht being said every year the 4.5 keepers are always 20 points max away from the premium keepers due to saves/baps. For eg Ederson almost never got save points last year whereas Ryan had 1 save point per game on average. That alone is worth about 7 more CS's

        1. Homo Neanderthalensis
          • 12 Years
          7 years, 8 months ago

That’s very true! But I think a lot of that luck is in choosing the correct 4.5m keeper.. can be a Russian roulette some seasons at who in that price range is going to perform like that. I prefer the set and forget guaranteed method personally lol

            • 16 Years

The reason I'm going Ryan is due to the fact that I see nothing changing this season.. they don't have europa, their defense is the same as last year., Theyve added a bit more quality in the squad.. can see him replicating last year at least though I'm hoping he better s it.

Haha, I’m backing Liverpool to win the league this year and city to come second with arsenal in 3rd.

They have strengthened defensively.. VVDs first full season (who I also have) and now Allison... who is the Messi of goalkeepers right now at only 25 years old.
