Fantasy Premier League managers have been presented with a much more clear-cut captaincy discussion this week, but there’s still plenty to analyse before the Gameweek 3 deadline.

Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) is the stand-out candidate with Liverpool hosting Brighton and Hove Albion, while Sergio Aguero (£11.0m) is his main competitor.

However, there are, as ever some interesting differential candidates worth looking at.

We’ve gone over the results of our most recent poll and the underlying data to help you pick the best one once again.

THE CAPTAIN POLL

It is Salah who runs away with our Captain Poll for the second time this season. As of Saturday morining around 16,000 Fantasy managers had cast their vote to give the Egyptian a 48 percent share.

However, even though a home fixture against Brighton is considered just as appealing as the Gameweek 1 hosting of West Ham, Salah should fall well short of the majority he enjoyed for the first weekend of the season.

49.74 percentage points separated him and Gameweek 1 runner-up Aguero two weeks ago. This time around the gap is much smaller, the Manchester City man’s 22 percent backing trimming Salah’s lead to just 26 percent.

There are two main factors in why that change has occurred. The first is Aguero himself, who has emerged as a much stronger candidate than was initially expected following his Gameweek 2 hat-trick against Huddersfield. No player in the league has had as many shots on goal as Aguero and this week he travels to face a Wolves defence that has already been breached four times. The only thing that tempers Aguero’s appeal will be rotation once again. While he has now started the last 15 home matches that he was fit and available for, on the road in 2017/18 Gabriel Jesus (£10.5m) featured from the beginning more times than him, 12 starts to eight.

The second factor has been the form of Sadio Mané (£9.8m), who has outscored Salah in both Gameweeks so far and has matched him for shots in the box (six) and accurate ones too (four). So it’s no surprise to see the Senegalese international in the running for a third-place finish in the poll this week, with eight percent of the votes.

Expected to run Mané close for third place is Arsenal’s main man Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m). He is also around the eight percent mark ahead of an appealing fixture, this week at home to West Ham, even after blanking in the first two outings of 2018/19. Those backing Aubameyang may well be members of the Salah-less 45 percent who are worried about Aguero’s place in the Man City side.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.2m) completes the poll’s current top five after continuing his fine start to the season against Huddersfield. The Manchester City defender has four assists in his first two matches and has touched the ball in opposing final thirds more often than anyone else in his classification.

Kamara seems to be the most popular one but for 1.0 more you can get Ings who is a pretty good pick IMO.

Who do you think will step up in GW3 and be a popular transfer in for GW4, and why?

Do you think it will be an already-established name in our sides or someone who is a major differential?

Have you seen something in a someone's play or in their stats to make you think they could be ready for a breakout GW?

Yep. Whilst lots are flocking to Ings (perhaps as much for value as product) it could be that Maddison becomes the most desirable player in this game. I’m toying with bringing him in but for -4 and Vardy aet to return I can’t quite get myself there.

Hazard has me worried... nothing more than it's him & Chelsea's fixtures are looking sweet. 12.5% ownership isn't massive but it can grow quick & I'm set on keeping Salah, Mane & Aguero (for now)

Ings. A shot every 14 minutes isn’t maintainable (surely?) but even if that halves it could reap serious rewards.

Ramsey in a relatively advanced position is likely to get in amongst the goals over the run of good fixtures. Tomorrow could be the day he convinces us. He just needs to start, have a few shots and an attacking return. I think, deep down, people want him to perform so that they can buy him asap 😀 A little glimmer of potential form and he's in my team. Although I may still wait till I have 2 FTs.

The same could be said for Lacazette. I just sold him for Aguero, but I'm sad to see him go. If he starts the next 2 weeks and performs well, I might just be making the transfer in the opposite direction.

Could be. But I wouldn't be pretty sure of anything, since the system isn't set in stone. If he rolls out 3 CMs at any point, you'd think Ramsey would be the most advanced, and so even more advanced than in his usual box-to-box role. I seem to remember him getting into good positions when he came on at the weekend in the 4-2-3-1, anyway, so we'll see. Could be the weekend he convinces us....! 😀

I can see Fulham players coming to the fore this week - Mitrovic already shown his form, so lets go for Sessegnon having a good week.

Auba and Mkhi obviously got a great chance - no surprise at all if they both get double digit hauls.

Great chance for Ings bandwagon to get fully into gear too. Underlying stats very good and gives that team potency at last.

I could see Ings scoring, gets plenty of shots off in the box and I'm not convinced by Leicester's defence at all.
Liverpool I see scoring a few, possibly one of the midfielders may also chip in this week, possibly Keita or Milner backing up his strong GW1 and 2.
Huddersfield I'm backing for a win and clean sheet. Mounie to score, possibly Pritchard with an assist and decent value at 5.0 and playing as a number 10. Ben Hamer could be a nice differential in goal if he keeps his place.
Mitrovic to score against a tired Burnley
I'd expect Zaha and Richarlison to keep performing and see their ownership and value rise over the next 3 games.
Alonso against a Newcastle side with very little goal threat (No Kenedy) and no fit right backs.....looks a dream scenario for another haul to me.
And Arsenal really need a win, and are playing perfect opponents to get it. Any one or all of Ramsey, Auba, Lacazette, Ozil, Miki, Iwobi could become a bandwagon.

Of the vast raft of players to have dropped in value, who is best to keep a hold of and retain in our teams?

I'll start with Lacazette: good pre-season form, Arsenal will be attacking more in next set of fixtures over next few weeks, plus Aubameyang tends to go left to accommodate him.

Auba, should have bagged a brace against Che, don't think he's going to do that again this weekend, and could see at least two against West Ham, who's defense i could see torn to shreds at the Emirates and Arsenal getting their first win in big fashion

    Hello,

    Currently on

    Foster (Fabianski)
    Mendy, Robertson, Tomkins, (AWB), (Peltier)
    Mkhi, Salah, Mane, Stephens, (Chalobah)
    Aguero, Lacazette, Arnie

1FT. I think Lacazette is 50:50 to start tomorrow.

Should I keep and give him one more chance to start or downgrade?

If I downgrade, should it be for Morata, Ings, Mitrovic or Zaha?

Current thought process is Laca > Mitrovic
    Then Peltier > Davies for a -4.

Any help would be much appreciated.

(start thinking about Chelsea coverage given their fixtures, especially if certain Belgians do well this week too)

laca to ings is what i would do, IF you go for it, also based on Emery statements about auba and laca starting together, it seems for now he wont do that, and will most likely favour auba

as for peltier, yeah he should go, whether you wana take that hit is a different story

        Thanks.

Leaning towards the one transfer now.

Morata or Mitrovic the ones i am stuck between.

Peltier can get a stay of execution for now as I'm not expecting Ben Davies to outscore him by 4 points away to United.

Nothing seems to be too outstanding to me. Peltier to Davies for a -4 isn't needed IMO, your defence looks solid enough as it is. You can take Lacazette out if you want to play it safe though. What's the situation with Chalobah, is he coming back soon?

I'm waiting for the press conference for information on Chalobah.

Think I'll save the Peltier transfer, don't think it's worth a hit.

        Now Morata or Mitrovic.

I brought morata in last week for the next few fixtures (and was pleased with his goal and performance) but I did realise that it could be a gamble that may not pay off. He is a better player than the one he has been showing for the past few months. I do believe however that he will come good. If he doesn't cut it in the next 4 though he will be jettisoned.
Davies I'm not too sure of as spurs seem yet to tick (although rose does seem to be well out of favour and possibly on his way), isn't trippier a better option though.

I would do it. Mane looks good right now and on the rise... where as Eriksen hasn’t done anything (although his creative stats are still very good and just needs an end product) but with Kane looking a little blunt, who’s going to finish the chances Eriksen creates? Plus he’s lost some of his set pieces... I would take Mane right now every day of the week

  13. Demel

    Going against the template.

I would advise people to have a think before automatically picking template players. Try looking ahead. What have others missed? Who will be the next Mane, Richarlson etc that everyone is planning on owning.

You could pick up this anti-template team which could do just as well as the template...

    Hart
    Davies - Trippier - Bellarin - Azpi
    Sterling - Maddison - Walcott - Pogba
    Kane - Morata

    Norris - Duffy - Zahore - Westwood

...and there are plenty of others out there (this is just an example).

There is no guarantee that the template will outscore this team for example. Just imagine the march you will get if you pick up 2 or 3 of these instead of the usual suspects and they hit the ground running. And the players the template players are just the same as people already own who are doing well, and they have a wildcard in hand - how do you plan to catch them at that stage if you just copy them?

    1. The Wise Owl
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 3 days ago

I agree, but it's usually the template players that are getting points week in, week out. Having those who don't score, leaves yourself open to misery, and most importantly a bad rank.

Template is template for a reason. You're better off picking the best of them instead of going for straight differentials for the sake of being different.

Just prioritize one or two big hitters that you fancy and that's all the differential you need - Auba or Hazard for instance.

I'm playing King this week but I don't have Eriksen. King's stats show some promise, but Wilson and Fraser do look better at the mo.

If you're only giving players just 2 gameweeks to perform, you will need about 100 transfers this season - not 38.

Why would taking a hit after GW2 specifically, be any different to taking a hit at any other time?

Because in GW2 we're effectively playing the game blind with little to no data.

That said, I would be adverse to hits at any stage of the season.

I'm certain that General and co are not adverse to hits in certain circumstances. What sets them apart is their ability to plan ahead / react in such a way that they limit hits over the course of 38 GW's

Every well respected FPL pundit under the sun says to avoid hits. They clearly spell out the maths on why you will be down on points. Why have you ignored best practice? Sometimes overthinking FPL leads to hits.

            No overthinking needed. Just action...

If thinking for myself is equal to ignoring best practice then I'll carry on not being a sheep and having fun with the game. Way too many people take it far too seriously and I'm happy to live or die by my own decisions 😉

Yes I picked up on that as well. Think I'm going to hold on until after gw 4 (international break) and just make sure that i have 2 transfers for then. I will probably do a mini wildcard then.
I think that some of those who have seen others start explosively are reacting now rather than waiting (hence all the early wildcards I suspect have been played this week).

Just an observation I would like to make is that, at the moment I am 49k (down 4k last week even though I scored 86 points) but I'm sure that lots of those above me have already played 1/2 chips and I think (rightly or wrongly) that only 5k (only my assumption) or so of them will still be there at the end. It is the patient ones below who are the ones that i have to beware of climbing up above me.

    hi all.

Currently 3 manchester city cover via Kun mendy and mahrez whil no chelsea cover at all.

thinking of shiftin mahrez and daniels out for pedro and alonso.

i have already missed the price hikes.

is this worth -4? or shall i just postpone the transfer to next GW?

    currently:
    pickford/stekel
    cedric/holebas/DANIELS/wan-bissaka/mendy
    salah/richarlsion/fraser/MAHREZ/4.5
    auba/kun/zaha

    thanks

I'd go the other way. With Alonso playing a fairly prominent part in Chelsea attacks and being nailed, I'd go for just him.

i'm 50/50 on selling Coleman aswell (looking @ Bellerin)… now leaning towards trust my original pick to see if it comes good... that'll change the closer he gets to a drop

I've brought Monreal in as a bit of a punt. Very low ownership. Great fixtures. Possible attacking threat if not great defensively..

But I brought him in for Daniels, not sure I would bring in for Coleman.

Fair enough - but definitely don't do four transfers for -8 unless your team is completely broken... If it is, you might consider wc anyway

Wilson, Ings, Kepa, Alonso to outscore De Gea, Tomkins, Arnie, King by 8+? Can see it but wouldn't be at all confident

With Arnatovic's bad fixtures, United bad in defence, king playing behind Wilson, I see Alonso and Wilson making up that 8pts and then Kepa Should keep some clean sheets with good fixtures and Ings looking great value/enabler.

This is my team so I'm ok at the mo:

I wouldn't get rid of Arnie - he can still get goals during tough fixtures, and Arsenal's defence isn't up to much.

Used my FTs just after GW2 and would rather avoid taking a hit at this stage, despite the Alonso and Mkhi (justified) bandwagons and Mahrez having major question marks. Am I looking ok?

    0FT £0.4itb
    Foster
    Robbo, Mendy, PVA, S.Cook
    Salah (C), Mané, Mahrez, Rich
