Burnley’s exit from the Europa League may well see the Lancashire outfit become a side of Fantasy Premier League interest once again.

After a 1-1 draw with Olympiakos at Turf Moor on Thursday night, they were eliminated 4-2 on aggregate.

The players involved, and those that weren’t, have given us a fairly decent idea of who might start their Gameweek 4 meeting with Manchester United.

We have also looked ahead to the Clarets’ fixtures after the international break to assess where they may become useful to FPL managers.

Burnley 1-1 Olympiakos (2-4 on aggregate)

  • Goals: Matej Vydra (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Jeff Hendrick (£5.5m)

Burnley centre-back Ben Mee (£5.0m) may be at risk of rotation when Manchester United come to Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon. The 28-year-old filled the void left by suspended Ben Gibson (£4.9m) as the Clarets were eliminated from the Europa League by Olympiakos on Thursday night. He played alongside Kevin Long (£4.5m) with James Tarkowski (£5.0m) an unused substitute. Given that Mee played for the full 90 minutes it is possible that Gibson may take his place in the league for Gameweek 4.

There was a second start of the campaign for Tom Heaton (£5.0m), although it does appear that he could be the goalkeeper for cup competitions for now. After he made his comeback for the first leg in Greece last week doubt was cast over Joe Hart’s (£4.5m) place in the side but he went on to start the next league match. It is possible the same thing may happen again this week but manager Sean Dyche is still yet to field a question on the subject.

Which player will feature on the left-wing for Burnley, with Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m) not expected to be fit in time and Robbie Brady (£5.4m) still out, remains to be seen. FPL defender Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) came on for the injured Icelandic international in a straight swap at Fulham, and would have been a shoe-in had he not played 90 minutes at left-back on Thursday night. At the very least, that firms up Stephen Ward‘s (£5.0m) place in the team for Sunday, as he was an unused substitute.

Operating on the left flank against Olympiakos was teenager Dwight McNeil (not yet in FPL), making his first start of the season. The youngster registered 405 minutes during the pre-season campaign and has impressed in his appearances so far, the most recent prior to last night being against Aberdeen. He was replaced by Chris Wood (£6.5m) in the 75th minute so has had more rest than Taylor ahead Manchester United’s visit to Turf Moor.

“(McNeil) did great against Aberdeen, and again tonight, and each time that experience level goes up. That little bit of belief gets added, and we hope he grows more belief from tonight. It’s early days, but we do like what he’s doing. And he’s there on merit. Opportunity came his way with Johann (Berg Gudmundsson) going down, and he’s taken a real step forward.” – Sean Dyche

Ashley Barnes (£5.8m) and Sam Vokes (£5.4m) were the strike pairing with Wood only featuring for 15 minutes. Barnes made way for goal-scorer Matej Vydra (£6.0m) in the 65th minute, suggesting that he should be chosen up front alongside Wood again on Sunday.

Aaron Lennon (£5.0m) was another first-team option who started the European encounter but was replaced in the 75th minute by Jack Cork (£4.9m), securing his place in Sunday’s line-up.

Perhaps also of importance was Dyche’s reaction to Burnley’s exit from the European competition. Now that the Clarets are out they should be able to get back to the basics that made them so successful both in 2016/17 and 2017/18. That may be good news for FPL managers as Burnley have a run of fairly favourable fixtures from Gameweeks 5 to 8, in Wolves (away), Bournemouth (home), Cardiff (away) and Huddersfield (home).

“I thought we dominated the game and dominated the chances. The biggest bug bear is you’ve got to take your chances. We created enough chances. I wanted our team to get back to their identify and I feel that clearly happened today. No disappointments, just learning. We were effective. I thought we had so many chances, it could easily have gone our way. It was an excellent performance, we created so many chances. Winning it was the least we deserved and we could have gone through but we didn’t take our chances. It was back to our identity, a never-say-die attitude. I’m very pleased and very proud of the players. I think the whole club will learn from this. It bodes well for the future but we’ve got to use it wisely.” – Sean Dyche

BURNLEY XI (4-4-2): Heaton; Taylor, Mee, Long, Bardsley; McNeil (Wood 75′), Hendrick, Westwood, Lennon (Cork 75′); Barnes (Vydra 65′), Vokes.

    Richa>Gundogan for a hit? Injuries to him, Tomkins and Ings mean otherwise I might have 10 players.

      The honest answer is no-one knows.

      You'd assume it likely the full-backs will be rotated and VVD/Gomez (or Lovren) won't - but we can't guess. Have a strong bench.

              Eriksen is a set piece specialist too, it's not like he's the be all end all for Spurs. Of course he's a great player but Poch has been doing it for 2 seasons in a row now. Walker/Tripp, Rose/Davies, Tripp/Aurier and he's already done it with Davies this season. Trippier's time will come too

    Not sure on this, even knowing that Arnie is fit to play..
    What do you reckon?

    Arnie --> Mitro (-4)

    Team is ok, and I'm in currently in the top 5k so am reluctant to throw points away, but am hoping to hold onto the WC for a bit longer yet, so this change is for the next few weeks.

      This is the peak of points chasing. Arnie is playing really well, coulda had a hat trick at Arsenal. They face Wolves and Everton.

      Mitro faces Brighton at home and City at home. It's not even worth a free transfer

          Yes he did but Arnie scored against Arsenal so what's your point exactly? Arnie has easier fixtures by a mile. Taking him out for a hit is chasing his 16pt return last week. Just wait till gameweek 6 when Fulham's fixtures turn. Keep Mitro for the long haul then

      Thanks for the responses fella's.

      My doubts over this game week is that I think that the Wolves defence has underachieved and they will come good soon (I have stuck with Patricio as my second choice and will be starting him in some of the coming weeks over Foster).
      I expect Arnie to get none to one goal this week.
      Also West Ham have two tough fixtures from the next four.

      Mitro I see being more explosive than Arnie currently, and feels like he is more of a confidence / streak player. Also a factor is him being on set-plays.
      Fulham have only the one tough fixture in the next four.

      To put minds at rest, I am not chasing last weeks points, but I do see them as an indication that he might continue the form, and that his team will seek him out more often creating more opportunities for him in the coming weeks.

      I feared that I was getting too involved in the stuff above and was becoming blinded to the obvious, hence the question.
      I appreciate your advice and comments. 🙂

    Torn between Monreal or PVA at the 5.5 def spot to compliment Mendy and Alonso - both have very appealing fixtures the next 6-7 weeks..

    Thoughts on who to run with? Leaning Monreal, with their injury situation the minutes are all his and could see Arsenal collecting cleanies starting with Cardiff this weekend.

    PVA's attacking threat is inviting though, and could see some big numbers over that stretch. Thoughts appreciated..

        I had some Red Lotto George Weahs. Back in the day. They were agony but man I did I love George Weah!

        I know it hurts but players play through all sorts! This seems a bit minor is all. And they do get paid!

    A) Richarlson -> Walcott
    B) Richarlson -> Pedro
    C) Mane + Richarlson -> Hazard + Walcott (-4)

        Looks nice on paper, Mane could quite easily outscore Hazard though!

        Only problem with Pedro is game time - only going to cause headaches down the line.

      C is nice but who comes in for Richarlison otherwise?

        James Tomkins.

        It probably seems mad to think that Hazard will have to score 4 more points than Mane to justify this too, but closest rivals have the Liverpool double as well. Perhaps just trying to gamble too early in the season?

        1. Ask Yourself

          Walcott will also score more than Tomkins I think it’s a safe hit that is good long term and a differential with hazard. Mane hasn’t looked all that special and hazard is key

    RMWC please!

    (Hamer) Hennessey

    Alonso Mendy Robertson Wan Bis ( Bennet)

    Fraser Salah Mane Hazard (Westwood)

    Wilson Aguero (Kamara)

    Too weak a bench? I figured it's easier to get hazard during a WC and sell him if it doesn't work out than the opposite.

    Cheers!

        Walcott??

        I'm just concerned that Eriksen has done nothing for me in 3 weeks so looking rid.

        Plus with Alonso and Mendy cleaning up the points, the other guys in my league are grabbing them each week and i'm being left behind.

      How about PVA and D Silva?
      PVA’s clean sheet potential looks good for the next five: SOU, hud, NEW, bou, WOL. On top of his obvious attacking potential.
      D Silva looks all but nailed to me with KDB out of the fixture, and City’s fixtures just as enticing.
      It’ll be hard to go without Mendy and Alonso, but they won’t fire like they have been every week and I really don’t think it’s worth Eriksen to Gross

        I already have Wan Bissaka and B Silva so to bring in OVA and David Silva might be overkill.

      Jose on Shaw's form :

      "In relation to Luke, it’s a big week for him that ends with a very important match against Burnley. He played three very good matches and it is not easy to play three very good matches when your team loses two of them and he had that balance and consistency, and even when the team didn’t win, especially against Brighton he kept that consistency."

      “If next week his manager (Southgate) decides to give him minutes against Spain or Switzerland that will be obviously be very good for him. In this moment he is feeling the good results of the hard work and the good results of many people that work with him and try to make him a proper football player, because a proper football player is a player of consistency."

      “Mentally, physically he is stronger, tactically, he has a better understanding and we are very, very happy with him. To go to the national team after three Premier League matches, it is extraordinary for him.”
