Bournemouth’s budget defenders enhance their FPL appeal

Callum Wilson (£6.2m) and Ryan Fraser (£5.6m) have occupied a lot of column inches on this site in recent weeks thanks to their excellent underlying attacking statistics, but the Cherries’ quietly impressive defence will be the sole focus of this article.

With most of their backline available around the £4.5m price bracket in Fantasy Premier League this season, Bournemouth’s defenders are budget-friendly assets that have the potential to rack up a clean sheet or two over the next half-dozen matches at the very least: the Cherries, in fact, sit top of our Season Ticker for the coming six Gameweeks.

Eddie Howe’s backline is not one that is normally associated with solidity, of course, and there is a reason why their defensive assets are available on the cheap.

The Cherries have conceded more than 60 goals in each of their three previous seasons as a Premier League side and kept the joint-lowest number of clean sheets (six) in the top flight in 2017/18.

    I know people will say that I'll have a benching headache every week, but hear me out - there's a lot of talking points which could create some interesting discussion.

    ROTATION ---
    This squad means I'll be setup nicely for the expected rotation when the Europa and Champions League begins soon, plus the hectic winter schedule as I'll have a much healthier depth instead of cheap bench players that may get dropped (Peltier, Bennett, Bednarek, Hudson-Odi etc.) or cheap bench players that are only likely to get 0-3 points.

    FIXTURES ---
    I'd be able to choose my formation based on the fixture instead of being forced in some weeks to play against the top 6 like you normally would. Bournemouth play City? Bench Fraser. Southmapton play Liverpool? Bench Ings. Other managers won't have this luxury as their bench choices are usually even worse than their players with tough fixtures.

    TRANSFERS ---
    With such a balanced squad it allows you to more often save your Free Transfer. If a player gets injured for a few weeks you could just carry them on your bench instead of being forced into a transfer that hadn't been in your plans. Also, this squad allows you a greater variety with how to spend your transfers, as you would cover more unique price points with 15 players instead of only 11 (as most people don't like wasting transfers on their bench players).

      Good, balanced team. Just the lack of Salah is the worrying thing atm. Could work out especially if you have a plan to get him back?

      The common argument is that you have Mane... is way over his xG rather than Salah who is below his xG... and so regression for Mane and haul for Salah may hurt you. But I really like your team anyway.

      Ridiculous bench, bit too heavy in defence. Looks decent though! But would prefer one bench fodder at least, AWB should be there for value?

      Very nice...but the structure might cause you headache later. How to get Lukaku/Kane/Vardy/Salah if needed? Consider downgrading 2 defenders for example to AWB and Bennett/Doherty and put the money ITB (or get f.g.Salah).

      So you are playing 5 3 2 most weeks I am guessing with Ings Fraser and Madison on the bench. Having money in the squad helps with rotation and saving tranfers. But I feel it reduces flexibilty not increases it. If all youf premium players do well and suddenly you need an additional one who looks great. Lets say Laca for example. Getting him in requires downgrading more than one player. Just something to consider. But looks a good team now for sure.

      Downgrade Shaw Maddison Fraser Mitrovic and upgrade Richarlison to Salah. Play 442 without a bench. Ur only weak spot will be the 4th mid. U’ll have a much sicker team..

      As said last time you posted, its a great team. Non-benchers will disagree and claim "benching headache" etc. Of course some times you will have a freak Ings 10 pointer on the bench against a top 6 side, but overall you will more than make up for that in the long run by having players with good fixtures on the pitch.

        Also a lot of people seriously underestimate rotation coming up. If you wildcard now, you should try to set up for the long term, even into the christmas schedule. All players with Europa games are a rotation risk going forward, and come christmas congestion, even so called nailed players from mid table teams like Richarlison, Fraser, Mitrovic are likely to get rotated somewhat, suffer minor injuries or get suspensions that keep them out of certain matches around that time. A good bench is essential if you play your wildcard already.

            AWB is good. Stephens is trash. Bennett unknown if he will keep his spot. Arnie I think is a bit on the expensive side to bench, would rather have someone like Ings, Jimenez or Joselu as a bench/rotational striker.

                As an example of stuff I see in teams here, people shoe horn in someone like Zaha/Arnie and then have a complete trash bench. Much better off downgrading Arnie to Ings or Jimenez and then upgrading their 4.5 mf fodder to Fraser, even if that means benching either Fraser or Ings every week.

      I think you've set your team out brilliantly. Don't let people sway you into the "Magic Beans", you'll be much better braced to deal with the risk of rotation than others. 5 big defenders could maybe something you can look at but everything else is brilliant. You could just be setting the next "template" for the next few GWs.
      P.S.: Out of all the WC teams I've seen posted here, yours has been the best. I can't find a chink in this team.

          Thats not worth it imo

          Upgrading one of the bench players is important and since you are on WC, you have to plan a decent bench for long term. That bench wont help incase of emergency and probably going to increase the number of hits

        Yeah, Alonso has been painful as a non owner, but who to drop this week if doing D? Defenders all have good fixtures which puts me off a -4, and after this week Chelsea’s fixtures get a little tricky defensively.

          Alonso is a pain, almost like just pay the insurance and relax. Plus we're not paying for cleanies either so fixtures don't really matter with him in this mood.
          If Tomkins isn't back you can bench AWB but I would fancy lei to score @bou so you've a fair choice.

    Disappointingly, it seems that nearly every article is now restricted to members. I’m not after sympathy, but I don’t have a lot of disposable income. I’m still greatful for all your help over the last 8/9 years. I just can’t justify paying the members fee when I have people to provide for.

    Having used the FT to do Tomkins->Bennett, I'm left hoping Zaha and Cairney are fit.
    Zaha mainly since he's a starter, but Cairney as well, because the no shows of Zaha Cairney Tomkins Kamara resulted having only 10 players in gw4.

      Zaha tweeted 3 days ago that he was back soon and showed footage of him in a 6 a side game.

      I have Bilva and am probably giving him the Fulham game unless Pep gives any info. If so then will bring Fraser in which you could do and allows you to upgrade Cairney / Kamara / Pedro.

      I wouldn’t have both Salah and Mane at the moment.
