Some Fantasy Premier League managers may have been too quick to jump on the N’Golo Kanté (£5.0m) bandwagon this season.

The Chelsea midfielder is now in 22.1% of squads after netting a rare goal against Huddersfield Town in Gameweek 1.

However, it seems there is little to suggest Kanté will provide much value this season in spite of his new role at Stamford Bridge.

While this is a debate that raged on the Scoutcast a few weeks ago, we thought we’d take the opportunity of the international break to give it a bit more of a look.

After all, we now have more data to rely on when assessing the changes surrounding Kanté this season.

    my defence line (on WC):
    patricio
    alonso mendy shaw bennett awb
    will mostly play 343
    have 0.5 itb
is it worth doing bennett ---> rico?

No. Your defense is fine. Pray Shaw recovers. If he's out you're in the same spot as I am and need a replacement.

Decent defence, if Shaw is out it's likely to be for a week. Bennett or AWB both have reasonable fixtures this week. 0.5 ITB could prove pretty useful in the coming weeks IMO

No one can sell Hamer as good option with Lossl back unless you want to run with 1 keeper

Because Lossl was given a break from making last 16 of WC and is the clubs #1 GK

Patricio - wolves will come good over time and a fantastic shot stopper
      Hamer - dunno but cheap
Maddison - lively, good stats should be in amongst it if Leicester do well
Ings - literally the only soton player who looks like he has a goal in him

Is their a keeper playing premier league football whom is not a fantastic shot stopper (excluding bravo)?
        Hamer allows 0.5 spent elsewhere
Maddison - I need to see him more before convinced
Ings wont be scoring gw6 but yes a 5.6m asset (in that price bracket without competition) and great to enable cash elsewhere i guess

But remain totally and utterly unconvinced why they appear in so many wildcards. Begovic never mention but equal to Patricio
Other 4.5m Gks a better bet than Hamer
Pereyra, Milner, Fraser, Seri and Neves cheaper and returned more points so far.
Joselu has 15 points is only 5m and two fixtures in next two Gameweeks and never gets mentioned

All fair shouts those. I think Patricio is on trend but backed by those stats and fixtures, Begovic I like myself but I don't think Bournemouth had as impressive defensive stats.
Hamer is there to free up funds with a possibility of playing but most managers with him will be happy to stick with their first choice each week I think.
Pereyra has great stats and has been excellent so I think it's a question of whether it's sustainable. Milner more to do with rotation, fixtures, other Lpool options.
Fraser is still a popular choice, Seri looks great differential, Neves hasn't really shown much attacking threat after the first game week and has lost out on set pieces recently. Great player but seems to assist the assister.
Joselu is interesting but isn't a starter since the arrival of Rondon

In the case of Maddison I agree to an extent, would like to see more but from watching Leicester he appears to be at the centre of each attack and though he has attacking returns his performances seem to deserve more. With the improving fixtures there's potential of a Pereyra type run of returns that it would be nice to catch the start of. That being said it is still a fingers crossed job, Leicester can be quite inconsistent.

You know Patricio's history right? And how he's ended up at Wolves... He's probably top 5 in the league behind. De Gea, Ederson, Allison, Lloris and actually has more league/cup/international/european medals than all of them...

    3. ChineseDave

Patricio - Wolves defence good stats, reasonable fixtures, looked impressive

Hamer - First choice before injury, Lossl played well when on as sub but poorly since then.

Maddison - Impressive attacking stats last match, fixtures improving, Set pieces, Vardy returning to offer more assist potential for him

Ings - Hughes backs him so a likely starting budget forward, decent attacking stats, 18 points from 4 games so far

    1. ChineseDave
      • 7 Years
      7 years, 8 months ago

Presumably this is partly to free up funds? Out of those Brooks would be the only one of interest, consider Will Hughes of Watford as an option, he seems to be playing in a more advanced role this year. If this is going to be a 5th midfielder unlikely to ever be used there are a few 4.5mil playing mids that would possibly give you more funds to upgrade elsewhere.

Have 2 FT and 0.5 itb. Thoughts on how to improve this lot.

    Fab, Foster
    Alonso, Mendy, VVD, AWB, Peltier
    Salah, Mane, Mhik, Fraser, Gunnarson
    Aguero, Tosun, King.

I have about lost my patience with King and Tosun, they are both gonna drop soon, but they have good fixtures this week. Also, Pelt and Gunnarsson have not worked out. Not sure whether they are worth a FT to fix though. Mhik is the other issue. Would like to hold onto my WC

If u need desperately to ditch 5 or more then WC time. But personally I would use one transfer this week and take out Peltier or Gunnar to playing replacement so u have a 2nd sub as may as well use carried over FT. If u still have lost patience come Saturday night the. Active wildcard, use fpl stats and get some price rises and get the team you would be happier with for Gw6

I think you might want to consider a 3 FT move to bring in Hazard + Player X + Player X for a -4. Don't WC - you have the core of a good team here. You also have lots of options. Who might you want to bring in with Hazard?

I'm on WC and what's putting me off Salah is his price, him not being on penalties and his lack of bonus points. But it's stupid removing him, right?

So it's either a Salah-less but strong team of:

    A) Hazard, Mane, Alli, Pedro/Richarlison - Aguero, Vardy, Wilson
    B) Hazard, Mane, 2 of Pedro/Richarlison/Schurrle - Aguero, Lukaku, Wilson

Or there's always the unnecessarily strong midfield of:

    C) Hazard, Mane, Salah, 5m mid - Aguero, Wilson, Mitrovic

Begovic is junk. Even though I think Hamer will lose his place to Lossl no point having 4.5 paired with Ederson. TAA and Mkhi need to go on a WC. Mitro ok in forwards you need premium like Kun/Lukaku/Kane

Whilst it's quiet.... Davies has become available in draft league - who do I try and get him in for: Stones, Rudiger, PVA or Alexander-Arnold (NB I also have Robertson and Kepa in net)

Was thinking Arnold bc of having 2 Liverpool but then realised I have 2 Chelsea too. Feels bad to get rid of Rudiger this week though in a plum fixture.

Curious. What is it about a draft game compared to normal FPL that makes PVA not worth it?

Yeah I'm pretty happy with PVA for now with the fixtures CP still have - I guess the point is you have to think more long term and also that you can afford to have some players that might be benched occasionally (like Stones was) since your bench is always pretty strong.

A pretty mixed bag of responses shows how hard a decision this is - the thing with getting rid of TAA is that I don't want to give him up to someone else.

      Only Sarri knows.
But Pedro very dangerous when he plays.
If you get him to have to be able to suffer the occasional 1 pointer from the bench mixed with the occasional double figure points.
Hazard could even end up as false 9 with pedro and wilian flanking him that would be the dream fpl scenario.

In that case I don't think it is worth the -8 to be honest.
There is always the potential a -4 can backfire, the likelihood is raised with a -8.
If you have your heart set on it you should go for it.
But keep the players to get your points back on them.
I made a -12 last year around this time and it cost me 40 points! Really backfired.

I know this question has probably been asked load of times but how important is formation flexibility within your squad?

At current I am able to choose between playing 3, 4 or 5 midfielders.

However with my proposed transfers I may be forced to playing with only 3 mids every week. Is that a bad thing or am I over thinking it?

Proposed moves Mkitaryan + Tomkins -> Guendouzi + Alonso

leaves a midfield of: Mane Hazard B.Silva ( Hughes Guendouzi)

I started with this structure gw1 with two 4.5m players.
But I had to wildcard before gw3 because of price drops and injuries.
Using the two 4.5m gives you less flexibility in midfield but more flexibility up front and in defence.
It depends if you think that defence and attack are where the rest of your money should be concentrated.
Also you have three very good midfielders there that mane-y others would not have.
They are decent captain choices as well over the season.

I have a different understanding of formation “flexibility”.

I don’t really care whether I have the flexibility to play 3/4/5 mid or 3/4/5 defenders. I don’t see why that is useful at all. The game objective is to maximise points over the season. In thinking about flexibility, I focus on how many alternative options I have for a particular position at a particular price point. You want a formation that allows you to deal with unlucky events / wrong judgment easily without hits.

For eg, there are about 3 prem def at 6+m that I really fancy at the moment (Alonso Mendy Robertson) -> which means I should play with 1 or 2 prem def only (if I have all 3 and 1 of them is out I will have problems finding a replacement).

I also think there are more 7m and below forward options (Ings, Mitrovic, Jimenez, Zaha, Arnie) vs mid options this season, so maybe going 343 gives me most flexibility.

      3. Positive vibes

Flexibility is very important in FPL for me. Last year I start with mid: KDB, Willian, Zaha and 2x 4.5m and have to wc early to have Salah, Mkhi and decent 4th mid.

I have 6.5M available for a midfield player. Right now it looks like it might be Maddison but I don't really know if I trust him. He has a good run of games but he seems like that kind of player that a lot of the build up play goes through but wouldn't be there for the assist or the goal. Can you guys tell me what you think about Maddison or if there is a better sub 6.5M midfielder I should go for?

      1. Netley Lucas

There are a few things to consider with Maddison. He's young, it's another step-up in class for him and he's a very talented player, heavily involved in both assist & goal threat.
He's had 2 good games v mun & liv and 2 quieter ones, despite the lucky goal v wol. He's not played 90' yet due to running out of steam and is a tad prone to hold the ball a bit too long.
His best game was v liv and his numbers were very good.

Buyers like me are taking the bet that he can continue to improve both his form, fitness & stamina.
