Brighton’s latest win, the third on the bounce, may see them become Fantasy Premier League managers’ next source of budget investment.

Just two of their players have 5% or more ownership with Gameweek 10 nearing its completion, but that could change in the coming days.

In this latest Scout Notes article we have assessed which of their players are deserving of the attention and whether or not Fantasy managers should be looking to move on their Wolves assets.

Brighton 1-0 Wolves

Goals: Glenn Murray (£6.5m)

Assists: Bruno (£4.4m)

Brighton’s 1-0 win over Wolves on Saturday brought with it a third clean sheet in as many Gameweeks. After failing to keep a single one in any of their opening seven matches, the Seagulls have certainly justified their place at the top of our Season Ticker’s defence section recently. The fact that they remain at the summit for the next six fixtures suggests investment in options such as Mat Ryan (£4.5m), Shane Duffy (£4.5m) or Lewis Dunk (£4.4m) is worth considering.

“Dunk and Duffy, they are massive for us. We struggled for clean sheets at the start of the season but we have got out ship together and it’s huge for confidence.” – Glenn Murray

The two centre-backs have garnered plenty of praise for their role in the win. Both defenders recorded nine clearances, five more than any other player in the match.

The three matches in which Brighton have kept clean sheets have seen significant improvements in these figures for Dunk and Duffy, compared to Gameweeks 1 to 7. The two of them combined for an average of 9.3 clearances per game initially, but a much better 20.7 since Gameweek 8, when West Ham were dispatched at the Amex Stadium.

How much of those improvements are down to Dunk and Duffy themselves is hard to tell. What we do know is that Bruno‘s (£4.4m) return to the side in Gameweek 8, at the expense of the more forward-thinking Martín Montoya (£4.4m), coincided with the start of Brighton’s run of clean sheets. We went into more detail about how he has improved the side HERE. The 38-year-old also recorded an excellent score against Wolves, his assist and maximum bonus pulling in a total of 12 points.

It is possible that having a more experienced head at right-back has eased the pressure on Dunk and Duffy. A comparison of their heat-maps from Gameweeks 1 to 7 with ones from Gameweeks 8 to 10 shows that both centre-backs have been able to spend significantly more time in their own penalty box compared to the wider areas outside of it. Regardless of the cause, it is clear now that both players are in a better situation to help prevent goals for their team. They still also carry goal threat too with Duffy having a headed effort against Wolves hit the post in the first half.

Also playing his part in Brighton’s improved defensive prospects is goalkeeper Ryan, who made more saves against Wolves than he had in any previous league match this season (seven). He has averaged 10 points per game since Gameweek 8, having picked up additionals for saves in every appearance during that time. Ryan has done well for on the bonus points system too. In the last three Gameweeks, he has collected a total of seven (2.33 per game).

Whether this impressive run of defensive solidity can continue remains to be seen. While there have been improvements in recent weeks, Wolves were perhaps a little unlucky not to leave the Amex Stadium with a point. They dominated for possession (60%), shots (25 to 7) and accurate efforts (7 to 1). Matt Doherty (£4.9m) and Ryan Bennett (£4.2m) both missed golden opportunities to score and Brighton went unpunished.

Such a story actually tallies with the Seagulls’ previous two clean sheet victories. Between Gameweeks 1 and 7, Brighton allowed an average of 16.9 goal attempts. This has risen to 23.0 since Gameweek 8. In short, in the time that Brighton have kept more clean sheets, they have also been allowing more shots too. With the easier of their next six opponents (Cardiff, Huddersfield and Burnley) all coming on the road, where Brighton traditionally struggle, some Fantasy managers may leave their defensive options alone for now. Amex Stadium matches are usually the ones to trust Hughton’s men in but between now and Gameweek 16 they play there just twice against Leicester and Crystal Palace.

It is possible that Brighton’s recent defensive improvements have also slightly impacted their ability to find the net too. Going back to our comparison of the first seven Gameweeks with the last three, there has been a drop-off in shots, goal attempts in the box and efforts on target. Manager Chris Hughton even acknowledged this himself.

“We are not playing at our best. Nowhere near. We have players who are not at their level, we are not good on the ball but we are defending really well.” – Chris Hughton

The shining light in all of that is striker Glenn Murray (£6.6m). He came through his concussion protocol to start seven days after being knocked unconscious at Newcastle. The way in which both he and Hughton spoke about the injury after Saturday’s win reinforces Murray’s resolve to start games even when yellow-flagged.

“Glenn was always adamant he was fine, he wanted to play. Because we followed the protocol, we knew that medically he was fine to play so then it’s really about the player. He’s somebody who wants to play and wants to play as many games as possible. My thoughts were always to play him if we were able to. He’s someone that’s desperate to score goals.” – Chris Hughton

“It has been quite a long week, to be honest. It’s been a gradual week, obviously quite groggy the first few days. I took a bit of time out last weekend. Then just gradually building up and doing all the protocol to get back to play, through the FA schedule. It resulted in me training with the first team on Friday and thankfully the gaffer showed a lot of faith in me and restored me to the starting XI.” – Glenn Murray

Murray’s latest goal was his fifth one at home this season. He has now scored 40% of Brighton’s goals since they returned to the Premier League and continues to defy the usual rules of FPL goal threat. The veteran striker has just seven shots on target this season but has scored with six of them. Accordingly, he has the highest goal conversion of among forwards in 2018/19 (42.9%).

Murray probably has to be seen as the only real way to invest in the Seagulls’ attack for FPL, although he also suffers from the home/away curse too. Just one of his six goals this season have come on the road. Anthony Knockaert (£5.5m) was left on the bench for a second league match in a row almost entirely removing him from our radars following comments from Hughton last week about removing him for tactical reasons.

With Davy Pröpper (£4.8m) still out injured, there was another start in central midfield for budget man Beram Kayal (£4.4m). However, this was his first match without an attacking return since Gameweek 7.

Without wanting to sound like a broken record, it does appear that patience is still required with most Wolves assets. Yes, it was a second consecutive defeat for the newly-promoted side but they looked much better at both ends of the pitch than they did in the 2-0 defeat home to Watford.

Wolves got back to their basics of restricting their opponents to few opportunities, in fact, Brighton’s Murray scored with the hosts only shot on target of the match. While it was deeply frustrating for owners of Wolves defensive assets, such a statistic bodes well for future clean sheets. The next two matches (Spurs and Arsenal) do look tricky but Gameweeks 13 and 14 pit Wolves against Huddersfield (home) and Cardiff (away).

“It was frustrating on Saturday. I don’t know how many chances Brighton had, it didn’t feel like that many. They had half a chance and scored from it. That’s the clinical nature of the Premier League.” – Matt Doherty

“The only moment I am disappointed with is when we conceded. We did enough to deserve a different result, we bounced back from the last game. We must be optimistic.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

Nuno Espirito Santo made a change to his side for the first time this season. Diogo Jota (£6.0m) dropped out to allow former impact substitute Adama Traoré (£5.5m) his first league start of the campaign.

Doherty continued to show the threat he offers as a goal-scoring option. He found himself in dangerous positions a lot and really should have scored an opening goal in the first half when pulled wide after going clear Brighton’s penalty area. Doherty could have also have earned his side a penalty after his shot struck José Izquierdo (£5.9m) on the arm. Moving him on at a time like this does feel ill-advised.

However, striker Raúl Jiménez (£5.7m) appears to have reached the end of his usefulness to Fantasy managers. He went without a goal for the fifth straight match, while Wolves themselves have averaged just 0.33 goals per game since Gameweek 8. Meanwhile, Jiménez has been substituted in each of his last three appearances, around the hour-mark in both Gameweeks 9 and 10. In both cases, Wolves were chasing the game and Nuno has admitted improvements are needed up front.

“Of course, it’s something we have to improve (when asked about Wolves’ goal-scoring record). When you create so much, you must improve.” – Nuno

Brighton XI (4-4-1-1): Ryan; Bong, Dunk, Duffy, Bruno; Izquierdo (Knockaert 81′), Kayal, Stephens, Jahanbakhsh; March (Bissouma 71′); Murray

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Patrício; Boly, Coady, Bennett; Jonny (Bonatini 85′), Moutinho, Neves, Doherty; Traoré (Cavaleiro 61′), Jiménez (Jota 61′), Costa.

Robertson, Mendy, Alonso, Trippier is the dream defence, but it can come at the expense of players like Arnie. I would be happy with the first three and get an alternative to TAA for same price or less.

Chance Leicester game doesn’t go ahead on the weekend? Seen a few rumors going about, not saying there’s any truth to it but just worth being mindful off when making transfers, I.e. if considering defenders, maddison or nacho as an enabler. Really wouldn’t be a massive surprise if the players asked for the game off, what’s happened has been nothing less than a tragedy..

0.2 short of Pereira, Mitro and Ings out for Mendy Arnie and Success (-8). Would do it otherwise.

But a -12 would be mad, wouldnt it?

Down from 16k to 36k this GW, and Mendy/S could make it worse tonight.

Fed up with Ings Mitro and Pereira. Not happy with Rich and Madd but patience could still pay off with them

Depends how wedded you are to certain players. Easiest would be Alonso Ings to Mendy Arnie. But you lose Alonso.

Would require multiple hits and restructuring to do anything else. WC?

          Mitro to Arnie
Rich to Barkley or Someone like Kenedy
          Pereira to Mendy

Pereira down to a cheap (Brighton?) one, and/or one of Richarlison or Maddison become someone like Brooks, Fraser, Paterson, etc. Then Mitro or Ings can become Arnie easily.

FPL always likes to keep us on our toes, and this 3rd / 4th slot in most of our midfields is certainly doing just that. To me at least, we've fallen into a period where there's no stand out option, leaving us with lots of choices and not many answers. We’ve had two template picks:

Richarlison (6.8m) has been a popular option after his stellar start to the season and then OOP return, but has since started to struggle a little as the main target man. An assist last time out, and he definitely could have had more in my opinion, suggests he could still be worth keeping hold of, but he hasn’t been as explosive as some of the other options around.

Maddison (7.0m) is another player that made his way into a lot of FFS teams recently but has seemingly dipped in form. No returns in his last 3, following a string of goals and assists some termed ‘lucky’, means there’s been talk of it being time to sell up on him. However, he’s been creating some good chances in recent games to make up for his lack of goal threat and has tasty fixtures.

However, as the two previous options have faltered in recent weeks, a number of others have been demanding our attention.

Sigurdsson (7.4m) is pricier than most of the other options in this price bracket (A generously wide price bracket admittedly) but has certainly been making a case for himself. Returns of 14, 10, 2 and 8 in his last 4 seem a good omen for his upcoming fixtures, and has lovely underlying statistics to go along with them. Speaking of his fixtures, it’s hard to tell if they’re good or not – A string of lovely home games perfectly divided by horrible away games. If you can afford to fork out for him, he looks the best in this price bracket, and seems the choice Everton midfielder as things stand.

Another pricier option is Martial (7.3m). All his returns (13, 15, 9) have come in his last 3 games, and his direct, pacey running is definitely causing defences trouble. He could have scored much better than his 9 on Sunday, and is looking good on confidence. However, with Lingard, Sanchez and Lukaku on the bench, that United starting 11 looks far from settled under Mourinho, and he will depend on good form to prevent himself from getting dropped. That, in fact, seems to be the problem with Martial – his ability to hold this form is widely questioned after his past history, plus Mourinho’s United have typically struggled to be free-scoring like Liverpool or City. If he can nail that place down – not an easy task – he could be a great option.

Ross Barkley (5.8m) could certainly be a shout, with 3 goals and 3 assists in the last 3 gameweeks. However, I believe there's a big risk of him missing games with Kovacic competition, along with RLC and Fab to lesser extents. His kind price tag might tempt people to punt on him anyways, but I suspect many will still be looking for a consistent starter for this slot.

There’s many more names I could mention for these spots. Pereyra, Schurlle, Felipe Anderson and Fraser all fit into this 3rd / 4th slot in our teams, meaning it’s giving me a bit of a headache to think about the options. I’d love to have Siggy, but price constraints mean I’m probably going to end up stuck with Richarlison and Fraser for the foreseeable future – Less concerned about having Richarlison, but very unsure about Fraser with his fixtures.

Which of these are you looking to own for the coming weeks, and why them?

Interesting shout. One I spotted whilst going through some of my stats tables - does quite well on goal attempts and xG. I feel like I have to play that 4th mid spot most weeks though, and to do that with a Cardiff mid makes me feel uneasy!

I don’t think it’s fair to say that Maddison has had a dip in form. He could’ve easily had 4 assists over the last 2 gameweeks. I’m still mindblown by those finishes

Richarlison and Fraser are staying in my team too. I was tempted by Maddison to replace Richie but not anymore. Knockaert was maybe a good replacement for Fraser when fixtures turn, but has now dissapear from our radars. Very difficult to make the right decision. Maybe just be patient. Or go 4-3-3 with a double pivot.

I think patience may well be the best policy, as usual. The situation is changing by the week now, and I feel with time we'll be able to cross a lot of the possibilities off the list, but risk missing out on some of the options good form now!

              KDB as 3rd mid in a 4-4-2 set-up

Reason - lots of value in budget defenders so 4th/5th defenders can rotate; no value in mid price mids - long term anyway

Wouldn't be an easy switch in formation for me and I suspect many others, unless on a WC. Tbf, I think I remember FPL General mentioning swapping to a 4-4-2 as a possibility, but it does lack some flexibility.

I do really like the idea of KDB as a 3rd mid though!

I’m torn. I also have Richarlison and Fraser, but can’t really see myself dropping them soon. I’m bringing in Mendy again, which could mean a switch to a back four and a change in formation, but that would be more to upgrade Mané to Hazard. Basically, I don’t know. Other than Sigurdsson, I cant really see too much of an upgrade.

currently david silva for my 3rd spot and pereyra for my 4th spot. These are interchangeable however. Pereyra has good form and 2 good fixtures before they turn for the worse. David Silva game time is a worry, especially with KDB back now.

Richarlison - got potential, showed early signs of form - main worry is those horrible away fixtures

Maddison - not overly convinced to be honest - not considering for now

Sigurdsson - Prefer Richarlison to Sig personally

Martial - I think he will lose his place when Sanchez/ Lukaku etc are back

Barkley - In the form of his life. I can see his game time being shared though. Chelsea have lots of options

Pereyra - good for next 2 weeks or so

Schurlle - Fulham are woeful (side note will be selling Mitro soon) - also his bps is low because he has so many off target shots

Fraser - great shout if you have him. Their fixtures are putting me off drafting him in however (currently holding Wilson)

I think it's definitely the safer option to hold, but I get the feeling there's points and pounds to be made if people are brave enough to punt. Getting the right one is a minefield though!

Hulk this! Should be actually an article.

Since I am not happy with Bou fixtures and I believe that Barkley has done enough to keep his starting position, I did yesterday Fraser > Barkley gamble.

This has been the first move I am absolutely extremely uncertain of. Yet choosing the target was easy, because I couldn't afford Martial and Rich to Siggy was too sideways, Rich also looked at least good enough and two plum fixtures coming soon. Also with wc intact it is safer to get rr like Barkley, in case of emergency that is nice insurance. Anyway, instead of being dullard I saw this situation as a good and "quite safe time to be maverick" instead of being behind the changing template.

I’ve held Pereyra since GW1, he’s been a brilliant pick for me. Next two are cracking fixtures too, so if you are wildcarding around the next int break, he’s a great short-term punt until his fixtures swing.

Not sure how much of a myth it is, but he seems to love the home games more than away, which puts me off a little. However, I agree - if you are looking for a short term punt he could be a good shout for the two weeks if you are willing to dead-end your squad.

Barkley looks worth a punt, when you consider his price is nearly 2m less than some of those other options you mentioned. Makes some rotation less irksome, especially if you have some decent bench options to back him up. 5.8m is so cheap! Another attraction of this is an attacking mid for that price in a top 4 side. I feel it could be a shrewd move.

Also Deulofeu to consider at 5.4m. You'd want to see him get a couple of full games first though.

My reason for considering these guys is to downgrade Richarlison who is not returning, in order to TAA > Mendy. Silva is going to stick with Richarlison up top I reckon, seems like a stubborn confident type bloke.

I’m still looking at Brady at 5.4m. 3 open play goal attempts, a few good crosses and he pinched a corner too. Great fixtures coming up and on free kicks too.

I find a lot of these quite tempting, but when it comes to the crunch, can rarely bring myself to invest in this price bracket..
Fraser is a hold for me at present - quite like the UTD fixture for BOU, but with my WC looming on the horizon in the near future, perhaps I'll reconsider.

Hate it when people take a simple tweet/retweet and make it into a big deal when it's clearly not.

How’s it not a big deal? This online characters are brave. Why can he not keep this offline and speak to him in private to raise the issue? There is no point to go social media and question your manager’s decisions. it just doesn’t solve anything

Plenty of celebs don't have hands on for their Twittee, Instagram, Facebook etc. Just there for publicity. He's in great form and I don't think Emery being too upset if a form player is making it public that he's unhappy to be subbed. After the Wenger Instagram boys days hopefully Arsenal players will let all their social media stuff be handled third party and do their talking on the pitch.

I appreciate what you’re saying however it doesn’t add up. If you’re a famous footballer playing for Arsenal and let your social media to run by a third party, why would they do such thing to criticise manager’s decisions?

You have seen what happened to Pogba in a similar situation, bearing in mind he handles his social account. He is now not aloud to speak to media about his work related issues.

So please enlighten me, whether Auba or a third party posting this, does that solve it or makes it worse?

Make what worse? He's letting Emery know he's unhappy he was subbed, that he wants more gametime to keep proving himself. Emery has him where he needs him. Unhappy, chomping at the bit to go out and score goals for Arsenal. Farmerfat is right.

Struggling here. Have 2FT’s and 0.0ITB. My initial plan was to do Trippier > Mendy and roll a transfer however I’m 0.1 short.

            Fabianski
            Robertson Alonso Trippier Doherty
            Hazard Salah Maddison Fraser
            Aguero Mitro

            Foster Ings AWB Stephens

Getting Mendy in would mean downgrading elsewhere. Another option would be Trippier & Ings > Duffy & Arnie?

            Thoughts?

            Mitrovic Aguero

            Stekelenburg Kamara Cook AWB

            2.4m ITB & 1 FT

Which defender would Toulouse to get Mendy guys?
I'm thinking TAA as he is no longer nailed but AWB & Moura > Mendy & Martial works out for exact funds or is AWB a season keeper at that price?
Is it even worth keeping Moura one more week and not taking a hit and just get Mendy in for free?
In short which defender would you say I should ship for Mendy?
