Our review of the weekend’s matches from a Fantasy perspective continues with an analysis of the match at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, as Manchester United held off an Everton comeback to climb above the Toffees into eighth.

With Romelu Lukaku named among the Red Devils’ substitutes, it was left to two players in the sub-£7.0m price bracket in FPL to lead the line for their respective clubs: Marcus Rashford spearheading the United attack and “out of position” midfielder Richarlison once again being used as the focal point in Marco Silva’s 4-2-3-1.

The game, however, belonged to two United midfielders, both of whom got on the scoresheet: Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial.

We’ve got all the goals, assist, Fantasy talking points, manager quotes and injury news from the penultimate fixture of Gameweek 10.

Manchester United 2-1 Everton

  • Goals: Paul Pogba (£8.0m), Anthony Martial (£7.3m) | Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m)
  • Assists: Paul Pogba | Richarlison (£6.8m)

For the Fantasy managers who owned the most popular FPL asset on show at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, there was at least the solace of an assist after what had been another frustrating day at the office.

When Richarlison (£6.8m) was handed the striker’s role against Leicester City in Gameweek 8, the 24.4% of us who own the former Watford midfielder had optimistic visions of the Brazilian embarking on a goal-scoring run in his new centre-forward position but after three Gameweeks as the spearhead of the Everton attack, Richarlison’s owners could be forgiven for clamouring for his return to the left flank.

As if to prove a point, Richarlison did his best work at Old Trafford when facing goal and retreating to a slightly deeper position.

Twice the Brazilian created excellent chances for his team-mates with incisive passes in behind the United defence, the first for Bernard (£5.9m) who could only fire into the side netting after rounding David de Gea and the second for Seamus Coleman (£5.2m) who blazed a shot over the Spanish goalkeeper’s bar.

Richarlison’s only real sight of goal came when he ran at United’s defence and fired low at de Gea, having spent much of the game being shackled out of possession or being ignored by his Everton team-mates when well placed.

Richarlison is a similar character to Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.9m) when things aren’t going his way, here unable to mask his contempt when Theo Walcott (£6.4m) twice elected to shoot rather than square the ball and possessing the demeanour of a sullen adolescent when the ball bypassed his orbit.

The Brazil international was still the pick of Everton’s front four, however, and got a perhaps deserved assist when he was chopped down in the box by the leaden-footed Chris Smalling (£5.8m) to give Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m) the opportunity to score what turned out to be the Toffees’ consolation from the spot on 76 minutes.

The Icelandic midfielder had earlier headed a Coleman delivery straight at de Gea and crossed for Andre Gomes (£5.4m) to do likewise, but was otherwise fairly quiet.

Being Everton’s designated penalty taker in a side blessed with pace in the form of Richarlison, Walcott and Bernard, however, means a spot-kick (or direct free-kick) award is always a possibility no matter what the opposition. Up next for the Toffees, indeed, are Brighton, a side who have conceded more fouls than any other Premier League side this season – three of which resulted in penalties.

Walcott and Bernard were fairly poor and their places could possibly come under threat from the likes of Ademola Lookman (£5.1m) or Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.3m) for the visit of the Seagulls in Gameweek 11, though it appears Cenk Tosun (£6.7m) still has much to do to convince his manager that he is worthy of a start after he was reduced to a fifth successive substitute’s appearance in the match on Sunday.

After the match, Silva said he was happy with his team’s approach to the game but bemoaned a lack of quality in front of goal:

We created four or five chances but only scored from the penalty and we have the quality to be better in those moments.

In the last ten minutes United had nine players on the edge of their box but we did not attack with quite enough quality, it was more with our hearts.

We did not create big chances in those moments but United were defending very deep.

We improved again in this match, though – not with the result, we are unhappy with the result – but we played our way. One penalty and one fantastic finish from Martial made the difference.

If we had been more assertive [with our chances] we would have had a different result – we did enough to achieve that.

Richarlison’s owners could have been forgiven for looking on enviously at what Anthony Martial (£7.3m) was achieving on the left flank for United, with the French winger perhaps the game’s standout player and giving Coleman a torrid afternoon.

Martial was particularly prominent in the first half, producing some excellent trickery to set up chances for Juan Mata (£6.2m) and Paul Pogba (£8.0m) before testing Jordan Pickford (£4.9m) from distance.

Martial was unlucky not to get an assist for United’s opener, having been “fouled” (replays suggested otherwise) by Idrissa Gueye (£4.8m) for the penalty that Pogba missed – the former Juventus midfielder subsequently tucking home the rebound from Pickford’s parry.

A fantastic curled effort just after the interval gave Martial the goal his performance merited and the ex-Monaco man ought to have added to his tally in stoppage time, being denied by Pickford when clean through on goal.

Speaking of Martial’s performance, Jose Mourinho said:

I think he coped well with his development process. He took quite a long time to understand what we want from him, took quite a long time for his brain but also his body to be ready to play the way we want him to play. But in this moment he is solid, he’s playing very well and even if he doesn’t score or is not in his best days to create the way he’s creating his performance, is a solid performance for the team.

He’s understanding now things we didn’t before and he wants to play and he knows that to play and be consistent in the team he has to go in a certain direction and he’s finding that direction.

His performance today without the goal would be a good performance and what I want from him is exactly that. You cannot score every time you play but in these matches, where you don’t score and you don’t assist, where your creation is not at a high level, but you have a certain balance in your performance.

And that’s the way I think he’s going now.

United assets have understandably been overlooked in recent weeks given the almost constant state of turmoil the club finds itself in, but Martial is averaging 12.33 points per match over the last three Gameweeks and is the form player in FPL.

The Frenchman, indeed, came into this match as the third-most-bought player of Gameweek 10 following his brace at Stamford Bridge.

What perhaps deters investment for those of us without him is the fact that United now face back-to-back away matches against Bournemouth and Manchester City, two sides that have kept three and five successive league clean sheets and who both sit in the top four for fewest big chances conceded in 2018/19.

Martial had started the match on the left of a front three in Mourinho’s 4-3-3, with Marcus Rashford (£6.7m) deployed as the central striker and Mata stationed on the right flank.

That meant that Romelu Lukaku (£10.8m) was dropped to the bench for the first time this season, the Belgian striker underscoring his lack of confidence in front of goal late in the match when emerging as a substitute to head Pogba’s inch-perfect cross horribly wide from eight yards.

Mourinho discussed his reasoning for Lukaku’s omission after full-time:

The reason is he is playing lots of matches and lately, not just not scoring goals, but also not showing lots of confidence.

Sometimes we decide that the best thing for the players is to not be on the pitch, to be protected and away from the initial pressure.

If he comes into the game later, he will come with a positive feeling of trying to make a difference and be back to normality because normally with Romelu, he scores lots of goals.

So I think he is under pressure a little bit because he is not doing that.

Rashford didn’t particularly stand out as a mid-price forward worth investing in, wasting the one goal-scoring opportunity he was presented with, but United looked better overall with Rashford’s movement up top and without the lumbering presence of Lukaku to stall any momentum.

Mata had a fine game too, though United’s other eye-catching player from a Fantasy perspective was Pogba.

While sloppy at times (his penalty miss and an unnecessary flick that ultimately led to Everton’s goal being two examples) Pogba looked capable of registering a goal or assist every time he went forward, registering twice as many attempts on goal and shots in the box as any player on show at Old Trafford.

Not even Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) or Eden Hazard (£11.3m) have registered as many shots on target as Pogba this season, meanwhile.

Being United’s penalty taker is another string to his bow from a Fantasy perspective, though Pogba has missed two of the five Premier League spot-kicks that he has taken this season and his manager suggested his technique from 12 yards needs honing:

The thing I like is the desire to take it. Let me choose the words, I don’t want to be punished.

I don’t like Mickey Mouses, fragile, afraid to go, ‘I don’t take penalties.’ I like the player that I want to take it.

The Crystal Palace boy today he missed against Everton and today two penalties he wants to take. Paul, can he improve? I think he can. The goalkeepers know his running, they don’t move and they are waiting for his decision so he has to learn from that but for me, the most important thing is he wants to go again.

United’s defence once again failed to keep a clean sheet on home soil and they have now conceded just one fewer goal at Old Trafford than they shipped at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ in the whole of 2017/18.

After an impressive start to the campaign, Luke Shaw (£5.om) is averaging just 1.6 FPL points per match over the last five Gameweeks and didn’t touch the ball once in the Everton penalty box on Sunday.

Jesse Lingard (£6.7m) and Marcos Rojo (£4.9m) returned from injury to be among the substitutes, where they were joined by Alexis Sanchez (£10.0m), who had mysteriously been ruled out of this fixture just 48 hours previously.

Manchester United XI (4-3-3): De Gea; Young, Lindelof, Smalling, Shaw; Fred (Lingard 90′), Matic, Pogba; Martial, Rashford (Lukaku 65′), Mata (Herrera 85′).

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Coleman, Keane, Zouma, Digne; Gueye (Tosun 78′), Gomes; Walcott (Calvert-Lewin 78′), Sigurdsson, Bernard (Lookman 62′); Richarlison.

unbelievable numbers from Wilson this season. Has only blanked 3 times. Why is he not in my team!!? Considering Mitro to Wilson this week.

        Same here.

Tempted by Wilson form, but fixtures awful.

Fulham seem deflated but if Mitro can't find the net against Huddersfield then he's certainly gone.

Arnie seems to have the forum's backing but only plays once a fortnight...

Which leaves Murray who is almost 40 years old.....

        Dôh....

The fixtures for Wilson really put me off, they look awful. Gutted to have sold Wilson for Arnie before GW8 but I think the tide turns now and Wilson will stop putting up such great numbers

Are fixtures really that bad? Both Utd and Arsenal ship goals when travelling and Bmouth are in form. In gw14 you could easily play Doherty and/or AWB.

looking at Bournemouth next 6, their opposition have conceded a total of 46 goals over 10 gws in the relevant home/away fixtures, so for me Wilson and Fraser are still goers over this period. Yes unlikely to get much against city and pool but the rest of the games, there are goals available

6 teams conceding 46 goals in 10 weeks? I make that 0.77 goals per game conceded. Doesn't sound that appealing to me!

46 goals conceded IN THE RELEVANT HOME/AWAY FIXTURES.
          5 games per team.
          1.54 goals per game.

MUN (H) - 9 goals conceded by MUN in 5 away matches
NEW (A) - 9 goals conceded by NEW in 5 home matches
ARS (H) - 9 goals conceded by ARS in 5 away matches
MCI (A) - 2 goals conceded by MCI in 5 home matches
HUD (H) - 14 goals conceded by HUD in 5 away matches
LIV (H) - 3 goals conceded by LIV in 5 away matches

Only 2 difficult fixtures there, with Huddersfield between them - I wouldn't rule out the possibility of Bournemouth getting a goal against MCI or LIV either.

Most of my points this season have come from Bournemouth players. Started with King and Fraser, then switched King to Wilson on wildcard in time for Fulham which was nice.

Getting rid of Fraser now as the fixtures toughen up and I can profit on him but keeping Wilson for sure.

I did Wilson > Kane in GW8 on a WC. That didn't work out well at all. Ditched Kane GW10 after his 2+2 for Vardy (1pt) aargh. Net deficit 23pts.

I'm almost certainly going to transfer Mitro to Wilson next week, or maybe even this week even though I already have Fraser. Fixtures are not great, but they are not that bad either. Utd and particularly Arsenal (both at home) are decent enough fixtures for an attacker. Besides, Mitros fixtures are not great either.

The worrying fixtures are City in gw14 and Liverpool in gw16, but then Doherty and AWB have nice fixtures so it actually rotates pretty nicely. Form, team form of Bmouth and underlying stats is enough for me.

Arnie is still my no1 pick going forward, but already got him. Not really interested in any other cheap strikers so the other option is to downgrade to Success and play 4-4-2.

A bit like Alonso, I've had to bite the bullet and get him. Also helped I couldn't upgrade Ings to Arnie so he was the best option and comparison with Murray wasn't a contest. I have not so fond memories of his continual blanks last season and I'm ready for deja-vu

With regards to team structure, I don't think I'll find a like for like replacement.

If he keeps scoring at the current rate over the next 6 - supposedly a tough run, then I don't think I'll be getting rid.

Nope. He cannot be great option with these fixtures. Probably at his best a solid option like Arnie has been with tough fixtures. In the beginning of the season the echo hear said Arnie can score against any team. Now the same heard thinks Wilson can keep delivering, because he has been great against weak opposition. Even Mané for example has been good vs the weak, but not fixture proof.

Bou have done well and if heard here believes it will continue to do so with bad fixtures, that is fine by me. Because to do well in fpl, also the heard here must be beaten. So please do double up Bou and I will remind you later with "I told you so" 😉

Personally it's because I've had Fraser since GW1, didn't want to double up on Bournemouth attack. He's a fantastic option though and despite the upcoming fixtures he can still do a job

Not great, but not necessarily bad either. Bou is very attacking, which could help them trickle along during the tough fix. Most likely there will be better options than fraser and wilson (at similar pricepoints) over the next couple of weeks. But if they were bought cheap and one believes they will be assets later in the season, then by all acounts keep.

If you dont have dont buy imo

I'm considering Costa Jimenez > Camerasa Wilson this week with 2FT. Exact cash so my consideration is moving Mitro > Arnie for FT next week. I also have Fraser, so feels a little enthusiastic to double up on BOU with those upcoming fixtures...but the returns for owners have been terrific.

Now, with just over 1/4 of the season gone, we're starting to see some significant changes to formation and players playing new positions. GW10 has also seen some big players missing out on the starting XI.

It's probably best to start with Liverpool - with Shaqiri and Lallana now pushing for starts, and the formation changed, Salah's game has been significantly impacted. Additionally, we've now seen TAA and Robertson benched, and Mané back in form. What are your thoughts on Liverpool assets after the past weekend?

Elsewhere, Richarlison continues to start up front and is beginning to get returns, and Siggy is looking his old self. Lukaku and Jota didn't start in GW10, with Rashford and Traoré replacing them, while Holebas, Kabasele, Arnautovic, Vardy, Hazard, and King all missed out for various reasons - which of these are most notable?

And players like Martial, Barkley, and Morata could all be starting to find form that could push them into our transfer plans. Who else are you keeping an eye on?

Which lineup inclusions or omissions are significant for your transfer plans, and why? Are there tactical tweaks you've seen that you think will impact our FPL teams?

What is your point? He has the same number of goals as he did at this point last season. Similar assists I'd assume.
If anything from what I've seen he's playing in a more threatening position with Firmino dropping in more to support attacks rather than finish them. Him being off form is a myth imo.

Ha I did yes. If his game had been significantly impacted is Geoff saying its for the better? And he will score more than 300 this season? I assumed Geoff was saying Salah isn't worth the money anymore, I think he might still be.

I wasn't saying it was negative, but I guess I also wasn't necessarily saying it was positive 😀

I was saying, at the core of it, that there has been a formation change and that Salah's positioning has been altered (impacted). I suspect it has been a positive change judging from what I've seen but I haven't had time to dig into the numbers.

And I was mostly talking things changing since the formation tweak - over the season I'm happy enough with him, even though he's so expensive.

I would say that the off form thing is, for me, a little true. Mostly in that he's so frustrating to watch - so many chances that he throws away. At his price, I really wish he had better finishing and would pick up bonus more often

Vardy benching was particularly painful to take.

Talisman theory got blown out of the water this week, either because of injuries or other reasons.

Chelsea showed they don’t need Hazard if he is a doubt
Puel showed that Vardy wasn’t in control
      Klopp showed he has options
Arnie isn’t as bullet proof as we hoped
      Turns out Lukaku is droppable
God knows what is going to happen with city.

I’d like to say strong benches will help, but there were too many cameos to help that.

      - bar GW13 Everton's fixtures aren't brilliant - think Siggy/Rich are ones for my wildcard
      - Salah and Mane are still two of the best picks, especially when they have decent fixtures - CS points can be found elsewhere if needed
      - Martial and Barkley could get decent runs, I'd wait on Martial until after City probably - but where is Sanchez?
      - Watford have some bargains in defence now, but hard to know if they'll be dropped next time they concede/lose
      - Shaq, like Martial and Barkley, could be decent - but you'll need to expect the odd 1-pointer (no different to everyone else, Salah has a few 2-pointers himself this season for much more money)
      - Brooks and Fraser keeping Stan out is interesting too, thought he was a certainty to come back in
      - Demarai Gray is back and given Amartey's injury will surely play going forward, might be a decent option at 5.4 with great fixtures

Could well be that GW10 is a blip and things look more normal with the lineups next week. But the game tonight will be really interesting.

In regards to both Firmino and KDB, a 9.5m player you will never (C) is not worth it value wise

The "buy-in" for a midfielder is 4.5m. KDB costs 9.8m 5.3m/5.5ppg=0,96ppm(illion). Someone like Fraser, who is an almost extreme point since he is so good value this year, will get you a lot more ppm.

          That’s an interesting point.
Being a non Salah owner, I’ve mostly captained Kun or Hazard and on the 2 occasions I’ve capitained my 9.5m options they’ve worked (Mane this week and Vardy few weeks back with his brace)
It’s always nice having a 3rd option to captain in case one of the big hitters misses out like this week Hazard

A fair point but your putting it to simplistic. Firmino and KDB are both viable options at their current pricepoint because they are "reliable". We have to use our budget, so it makes no sense to simply opt for "value-players", because the way your measuring value is only favouring cheap players.

There are'nt many players that wil end the season with an average of 5ppg. Firmino and KDB are certainly amongst the players looking likely to do so. They become real options every time their "respective competitors" have form and fixtures that suggests that KDB and Firmino will be amongst the top 6-7 offensive assets over a set of fixtures.

You are missing the point. They are not value if you will never (C) them, which you won't as long as Salah/Mane and Kun/Sterling is in the game

Main lesson is Im enclined to go back to a front 2. Switching from 352 to 442 depending on fixtures.

Arnautovic carrying is injury, Wilson fixtures turning for the worse, dont feel like getting Murray, Wolves and Soton not scoring enough to warrant investment over an even cheaper fwd, Arsenal fixtures not the best and Laca has lost his modjo, Vardy looking sick and uninterested (might change because of owner death, playing for him?), Morata still misses too many chances and one bad game away from the bench,...

Dont see many interesting strikers in the game right now.

Whereas in midfield, the Salah-Mané double loiks tempting again, there is Hazard, Sterling, the return of KDB, and cheaper interesting players like Barkley, Martial, Maddison, Richarlison, Fraser,...

2 up top with a 3rd striker like Success seems the way to go

Still Arnautovic, I think, if he’s declared fit. He is great I think, hungry and got great fixtures.

I also think Aguero might not be essential after SOU game, for sth like 4-5 games. A spell in which I might go with Hazard Salah Mané KDB in midfield.

We need a strong bench. At least two nailed players.I made my wc in gw9 and in both gw9 and gw10,two of my "nailed " players didn't play.Sterling+TAA in gw9,Robertson and Hazard in gw10.And in December when the teams will play 3 games in one week and they will also have games in Europe the situation will be even worst.

I though I had a strong bench this week with Doherty, Højbjerg & AWB. Ended up with Holebas, Robertson, Hazard (C), Højbjerg & Arnie not playing, leaving me with 7 players returning this week. KDB and Aguero still to play. All in all a disaster of a game week, 35 points and a drop of 66k places to 110k. Priced myself out of Salah by leaving the transfer to Saturday morning. originally had the (vc) on Robertson, paniced when I saw the Liverpool teamsheet and moved it to Frasier, then again to Mitrovic just before the deadline. A KDB 10m cameo would top off one of the worst gameweeks I can think of.

The confirmation of the Leicester disaster is truly awful. The chairman was great for Leicester football club and football in general. Their triumph to the league title will never be forgotten and that couldn’t have happened without the support of the chairman. He seemed to genuinely support the club and it’s players. Even supporting them in the matches in the World Cup, by taking time to go and watch them. A great guy it sounds, by all accounts. RIP.

Bournemouth: are assets such as Fraser and Wilson holds for the foreseeable future regardless of ‘toughening’ fixtures? Wilson in particular is in career best form and the issue is lack of options at a comparative price. The Cherries are scoring goals on the counter attack and this style can be fruitful against all opposition. Please discuss

I don't think anyone is a season keeper, all depends on form/fixtures and what the other options are at the time. Would defo keep for United and Arsenal as they don't look solid at all. After that it depends on if you have the bench to carry him for LIV, MCI/what other alternatives are available at the time.

Should game weeks like this make us rethink the 'weak bench' strategy that you've been mentioning in the MTM videos and on the scoutcast? I can't remember a GW like this one, where most of us had to go so deep into our benches, not even over the Christmas & New Year period.

      1. IRBOX ⚽

I don’t think it’s a ‘weak bench’ philosophy, more about maximising funds in the starting 11. Nothing is worse than a benching headache. Having 3 nailed on bench players for the bare minimum outlay is the key: eg) Bennett, AWB, Stephens.. guaranteed starters and needed only when required

One week in ten so far this has been a problem. So if this only comes up 3-4 times a season, what do you miss out on by not maximising your regular starting 11? Is it more or less than what you would have got off the bench this week?

More like a playing bench rather than a weak bench ... Andy, AZ & David (x2) have all failed to field 11 players in a game week this season and all have taken hits to deal with their team issues rather than relying on their bench .... is this a false economy ?

Team: Bournemouth - can they continue to return FPL points with the fixture shift.

Talking point: Strikers. - Few strikers are delivering to their price.(wilson the notable exception)
The early season budget strikers like Mitrovic, Jimenez, Ings look expensive even for their "low" prices. A lot of sides with 1 premium and 2 "budget/ 1 budget & 1 mid-priced (arnie/Zaha)".
Time to park a 4.5m striker on the bench and use funds to upgrade 2nd strikers or indeed upgrade elsewhere? e.g. more than a few options to upgrade 4th & 5th mids into the 5.5-7m bracket that most of these underperforming strikers are filling

Which player should we discuss and why? - Ross Barkley - Is he a trap? Can we double up with Hazard since Sarri talked him up very positively and now looks to be ahead of Kovacic?

Which team should we discuss and why? - Man City - the only home match between 11 and 17 is Bournermouth and they're on form - Kun and Sterling not the best options considering they wouldnt be captain material for those fixtures?

What should our talking point be and why? - Full house midfield strategy? Could have a midfield of Hazard Salah Mane KDB Martial/Pogba/Ozil - best strategy considering the likes of Wilson, Vardy, Arnie up front? and the lack of premium options up front.

Is it fair for Boly to be awarded FPL points for his handball goal against City, and Laca to not receive assist points for his handball this gameweek?

Which 2 out of 3 should we keep; Rich, Madd or Fraser?

Marial: In good form, Mourinho sang his praises. Can we trust him?

Team: Bournemouth. In fantastic form especially offensively. They look like a top 8 team this year. Certainly better than Leceister and Everton whose assets are coveted. Wilson and Fraser both consistent and explosive and best value for money out there. Yet people thinking of dropping them because fixtures are turning bad. I wouldn't drop Bournemouth assets unless injured.

Talking point: most teams depend heavily on budget players from teams that are seeing an unfavourable turn in fixtures (Bournemouth, Wolves, Everton, Palace, Fulham). Which of these teams/players should we hold onto and which should we ditch for teams/players with better fixtures (Leicester and West Ham)?

Ryan has done well over recent weeks. Do we think he's still the best option for upcoming games, or has he had his run and is Fabianski the better option for the run up to Xmas?

Have Wolves just been unlucky or should we consider moving their assets on? Doherty in particular came close to attacking returns again against Brighton.

With the unusually high number of non-playing players hitting teams this week for a period outside of Xmas, the necessity for a strong bench was highlighted this week. Most teams have players like AWB, Stephens, Hojbjerg on their bench which didn't score that well. Should we be considering spending a little more on 'bench fodder' options in case this trend continues or was this just a 'freak week'?

Player - Robertson. Is it time to remove the R from RAM? Should we buy the very cheap £4.2m insurance policy of Moreno?

Team - Wolves. Is the honeymoon over?

Talking Point - Scrimping. Do we get what we pay for? Or can the likes of Mane provide enough cover for Salah; can Barkley cover Hazard; can Luiz cover Alonso; or can Wilson even cover Aguero's points for almost half the price etc etc?

I would add, to anyone responding to this, that many of the responses to this weekly post would be good as Hot Topics!

If you want to expand your question/point and write it as a standalone post, use the flag function and the mods will see it. Just write 'potential Hot Topic in the box that pops up. Then the mods will look it over to see if it's appropriate and they'll make it green if it is.

Again, lots of these are the burning questions many managers are wondering about, so feel free to make a potential Hot Topic post in the newest article 🙂

Mitrovic- keep or sell. Stats are awful but has Huddersfield next. Preferred alternative Arnie but after no show this week should I hold for 1 more week?

Players that have to be discussed:
      - Mendy: Must have? Who to ditch? Worries over rotation?
      - Wilson: Worth getting in? Fixtures not that bad considering Utd and Arsenal ship goals on their travels. In gw14&gw16 we can easily play Doherty and AWB.
      - Mitro: Last chance or time to ditch?

Which player - Alonso, second highest point scorer in the game for just £7 mill, surely he is essential and a 4 or 5 match attacking blank period is nothing to be worried about whilst he is getting clean sheets? last season it was 7 or 8 games and he still clocked up a big total

Taking point - a playing bench v taking hits ... the use of a playing bench seems largely ignored in the community with a preference for spending as much as possible on the starting 11 and inclubing non starter bench fodder - is this a false economy when compared against taking hits ... is a playing bench worth more than spending the cash on the 11 players when hits couple be 40 or 50 points over a season ?

Team - Chelsea ... starting to look good

If there's anything essential (apart from Alonso), it's a playing bench.
Rotation, injuries and winter fixture congestion will punish those without at least 2 reliable subs.

Which player should we discuss and why? - Barkley and Martial. Two stand out performers for big teams this week. Do you think they can they maintain the form?

Which team should we discuss and why? - West Ham - Incredible fixtures but really struggling for form. Is it worth considering a WHU defender? And is it work getting Arnautovic considering his absence this week?

What should our talking point be and why? - Is there a shift in the template? Still early days however this and last week there seems to have been a shift i.e. liverpool strikers now look very important. Do you think this will persist?

Posted earlier on this topic wondering about the way we should react if CDF-LEI got postponed.
Since this fixture will remain in gw11, I still can't make a convincing case to keep Chilwell and Maddison.
It's an unusual situation, surely the players could find some motivation to do well, but I mostly think it will affect them in a negative way.
They currently are in an "unhealthy" situation, I feel it will take them some time to recover mentally and focus on playing football.
The fixtures are nice, but still, they couldn't take advantage of a home match against a non-top-6 team that played with 10 men.

It's crazy. Admittedly with three to play I went from 23k to 152k in one gameweek. And I recently wildcarded!

It's little things like getting unlucky with the TAA benching, and then Liverpool conceding when Robertson was benched so I couldn't claw back those points. Against Cardiff!

Also two consecutive captains not playing (Sterling, Hazard) which have auto-switched to Lacazette just as he has decided to stop recording attacking returns.

Getting on the Doherty bandwagon precisely as it derailed..

Onwards and upwards I suppose! I need my little differentials in KdB and Sterling to set this game alight tonight 🙂

          Robertson will play most weeks.
Moreno & Lovren are both liabilities & Klopp knows that.

All here are writing about great Liverpool fixtures. i do not find any great fixtures, but 1 until Christmas. Correct me, if i am wrong:
W11 Arsenal(a) - tough one - away against a top6 team, which somehow made 9 wins in a row, but play far from best football. Rate 3/10
        W12 Fulham(h) great one, no explanation. Rate10/10
W13 Watford(a) away game against very competitive team. Dangerous in attack, common in defense. Rate 5/10
W14 Everton(h) Derby. Everton are improving hugely, one of those game, where they will try to give their best. Low scoring game with many bookings expected. Rate 6/10
W15 Burnley(a) decent chance to make a good victory. Rate 8/10
W16 Bournemouth(a) - If host can keep the their current pace, not a easy one. Rate 5/10
        W17 Man United(h) - another derby. Rate 6/10
W18 Wolves(a) - decent defensive team, do not expect anything for granted. Rate 5/10
        Summary 48/80 or 6/10.

This is what happens when you do too much research. They'll pretty much be the favourites in all those matches given their current form. They'll score and keep cs too.

They are favorites, because they are top4 team. Not because the fixtures are good. In fact 6/10 is not good rate for top4 team.

Except City and Chelsea I'd say pretty much all fixtures aren't difficult. They had a very congested and brutal schedule and still produced points. In relatively easier fixtures they'll do better won't they?

Come on. They had 7/10 fixtures against bottom 9 teams. Is this a "very congested and brutal schedule"?

Pogbas showboating yesterday shows why he will never get into that elite group of footballers. That idiotic pen run up and that flick at the end to no one in particular sums him up perfectly.

I honestly do not understand why everyone has such a problem with Pogba's penalty run-up. Why does everyone care about it so much? 8 scored out of 11 penalties isn't a bad return

Because he is doing it for show. Run up properly, put it in the net and then do a proper celebration.

Same with the flicks and showboating. Stop that and get more goals, assists and key contributions.

why does it matter how he runs up.. you've just decided what a 'proper' run-up is. surely all that matters about your run up is that it gives you the best chance of scoring, and if his best chance of scoring is when he runs up like that, then whats the problem with it

Here's a FWIW .............. I've posted a bit this morning that Maddison's stats were shocking, and as such I'd be getting rid of him rather than Fraser, as had been my plan for a while.

I dunno why anyone would listen to what I have to say, but this place is an echo chamber, and so, for the sake of clarity:

Maddison has in fact made 7 chances, 3 of them big, and had 4 pops at goal (though zero on target) in the last two games

Some headers from his crosses should have been buried...however I was very concerned against 10 man Hammers that he started to go very deep and did little to break them down...

No no, they are compleely fine.

I had looked at Doosra's midfield mauraders table over my porridge, and Maddison wasn't even on it. (cos of the minimum shots on target filter, or summats)

I have similar problem and am thinking Mitro to Wilson simply for form, despite Fulham playing Hudd next week. Long term Wilson a better pick, with Fulham on an apparent downside.

Yes you can! Here's how I'm looking at it... get it out of the way now and next gw you still have 2 ft for more important transfers.

Who's to say Wilson won't score at home against man utds shaky defence.

I would save ideally, but your original point was about not wasting a FT. I am afraid that there really is nothing that stands out: you have probably best 4 bench players already so even that bit of shuffling doesn't help much. Stephens to Obiang maybe? (rotates better than Stephens with your 2 sub defenders and due back next week, Noble suspended so presumably straight back in if fit).

Obiang, is he nailed? I know Stephens will be lucky for even the odd assist but he’s guaranteed starter incase if what happened his week. I might just not make a transfer 2bh. Maybe I’ll be forced into a move due to injury, think that’s the only way I’ll make a transfer...

                As in Bournemouth?

Not sure... Man Utd / Arsenal at home could be alright, given how they've both defended this season.

In between those, they play Newcastle and Huddersfield... so still worth considering, but prices might be an issue.

i ditched fraser last week for salah and this week i am considering ditching wilson for arnautovic as well but might keep for another week to see how he plays against united. i think 3 attackers will be a way to go in the coming fixtures with plenty solid options:
aguero, laca, firminho, arnautovic, mitrovic, murray, wilson, jimenez
Might even be time to ditch aguero for 3rd heavy hitter in mid like kdb or sterling (alongside hazard and salah) and run arny + wilson + mitro/murray up front

Both definitely on the radar yeah.

Spectre of Aurier stops me pushing the Trippier button every single time. Can't quite abide a 6.3 defender who is a rotation risk... and I know he's first choice & my bench should cover him etc... just can't do it. Maybe I need more convincing.

Even with good fixtures, I think we've seen enough this season to show us Kane isn't the pick he once was. There's a completely different dynamic to Spurs this season, and the focus has moved away from creating chances for Kane. He'll get points, but Aguero (and plenty of premium mids) will get more imo

Mmm true - but even with that shift in dynamic, that last ten minutes at Brighton (for example) was absolutely horrible as a non-owner. So many times it looked like he was on for a 13-pointer even having been deep & playmaking for most of the game.

He has stat-padded a bit with pens but again, being nailed over Christmas you've got to think some more of those are coming his way...

It'll be so interesting around GW15 what happens in the game because Salah's fixtures get a tiny bit tougher, so we might see a big shift in sands to Kane from the 'fixture people' if he scores well in the next 5.

I do not think we did see the truly Spurs team this season. Too many injuries, WC fatigue and so on. They started to play better in defense, it is a sure bet, they will improve in attack also.

I am as well. Fixtures can create form as we've seen with Salah recently and Kane is unlikely to be rotated over the busy Christmas period - can't say the same for Aguero. Swapping around the big hitters based on fixtures has worked well thus season.

yeah eyeing Kane in for Aguero at around the same time

Yep. Would feel a bit strange moving Aguero out before any kind of decent-looking home game though so will have to look at when exactly I can do Kane in.

I've got Lacazette so that's most obvious route ATM.

Personally I wouldn't be concerned, United not exactly solid defensively.

Very average tbh. Wanted to try get in arnie for king but cant make the funds work. Dale Stephens on hand however to give me his solid 2 or do you think it's worth it losing Fraser for a hit. Maybe downgrade to Murphy so I can upgrade king in 2 weeks

I watched United yesterday and genuinely I don't think you should be worried about having attackers playing against them.
They always look likely to concede.

Best midfielder for 7.4 max? Time to ditch Maddison. Martial or Barkley maybe??

and he's a set piece specialist, on pens and a has a wicked long shot on him. He's a very good pick even against good sides.

The cheaper the trap the more likely a visit to the local STD clinic the next morning.

He’s still a nice cheap option if you have him. Not sure about bringing him in though. Seems a bit risky and then definitely a knee jerk

There aren't many forwards at that price range doing well. Difficult what to do with him given his fixtures
