Marcos Alonso (£7.1m) has been on a rollercoaster ride through the Fantasy community this season.

“Overpriced” as an orthodox left-back one minute and then “essential” the next, the fact stands that the Spanish defender is currently the leading scorer in Fantasy Premier League across all positions, having accumulated more points than Mohamed Salah (£13.0m), Raheem Sterling (£11.2m), Harry Kane (£12.4m) and Sergio Aguero (£11.4m) – all of whom we have discussed previously in this mini-series.

Yet still there remain murmurings about his diminished goal threat and more conservative role in Maurizio Sarri’s back four.

With that in mind, we have taken this opportunity to scrutinise Alonso’s key underlying statistics and analyse how the figures from this campaign are matching up to his stand-out FPL season of 2016/17.

That season saw Alonso find the net on six occasions and register five assists, with 15 sets of clean sheet points and 11 bonus helping the Chelsea left-back to an overall score of 177; Alonso has almost reached half of that total in just 12 Gameweeks of this campaign.

Alonso already has as many assists to his name (seven) as any FPL defender managed in the whole of 2017/18 and the same number that he himself has managed in the last two seasons combined.

An ever-present in the Premier League this season, Alonso has registered clean sheets in half of the 12 top-flight fixtures in which he has started for the Blues.

Rest and rotation is a risk over the busy Christmas period, as it is for most players, but Sarri came to England with a reputation for fielding a settled side and that is certainly panning out this season: seven of Chelsea’s first-choice starting XI (including all of Chelsea’s back four) have started every Premier League match and only fitness concerns have likely prevented Eden Hazard (£11.3m) from doing the same.

Members can read on to find out how Alonso’s attacking key performance indicators contrast to his “breakthrough” FPL season of 2016/17.

Anyone watched Haunting of Hill House on Netflix?

There are lots and lots of hidden ghosts in the background through each episode.

Look out for them. Really unsettling.

Avoid Wolves defence now with Jonny injured? Taking one key man out of a defence can make a massive doffer nice, CS’s are difficult enough as it is...

Wing backs are generally not very important for a team's defensive stability.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 16 Years

A striker can be important for defensive stability let alone a wingback. But I think the two teams they’re facing next might might leave them ok

Their wing backs are great FPL picks exactly because Wolves get most of their defensive stability elsewhere, allowing them to bomb forward.

          1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
            • 16 Years
            7 years, 4 months ago

Bomb forward when not defending though, Jonny is a right sided defender first & foremost, they will feel a difference defensively without him, wouldn’t be suprised to see teams heavily overloading wolves right flank now.

But the fact that it’s Huddersfield & Cardiff next two leaves it open ended. Beyond those two games though I think they’ll Be a noticeably weaker team with that vulnerability, it will affect their balance all over the park trying to compensate & defend against an overloaded right wing

    3. Kolarov Fpl Legend

It doesn't matter, he's not a key man. Team well organized like Wolves doesn't depend on a one player. If anyone is a key man, it's Coady.

            • 16 Years
            7 years, 4 months ago

There’s such a big drop in quality from Jonny to Vinegar though, it’s an obvious weak point for teams to focus on now, I could see Wolves having to pull another player/s over to support him while teams are overloading which will leave gaps elsewhere, leaving them vulnerable. It’s just the next 2 games are too good to be true though - not sure hudds/Cardiff have the quality to properly expose that weakness, but they’ll have a good go at it

I agree with you about the exposure of the average teams in that situation, but my point is that Wolves are a team with one of the best organized play and system that they are not one of those teams which depends on one player. I would still bring Doherty for example, if I didn't have him already.

              1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
                • 16 Years

I think you’re misunderstanding - Wolves have been organised and stable precisely because of their consistency in personnel - all of their starting 5 defenders are key - that’s why they all start every game.

Taking any of them out leaves a big drop in quality to the next replacement, especially Jonny who has an untested 19 yr old as his replacement.

I certainly don’t see hem haemorrhaging goals at all, but I do see it being more difficult keeping clean sheets for sure.

As I said, it’s just the next two games are Huddersfield/Cardiff which is in their favour

Once he starts actually being rotated it'd be an easy swap to Mitro for his decent fixtures. Yet to see any evidence it'll happen, though. Carroll will be injured again by then, for starters.

He hasn't played twice this week in any meaningful way. 100 mins over a two-week period is palatable. Also, he only plays twice in a week once before Christmas, so he might miss one game, but that applies to everyone. Also, his quote on that article doesn't say what you're claiming it says. Apart from that, super-helpful, thanks.

"Obviously after a game I need some rest, like two or three days, but then middle of the week I am training normal with the team and training full and on the weekend I play, that's the most important thing.’’

He didn’t say he can’t play 2 games in a week ever, he said it specifically with respect to these less than important international games.

I think he did actually mean 2 days in s row, making the point that he needs rest the day or two after a game.

He needs a few days rest midweek because of inflammation to the knee but can train between games as normal.

A bone bruise does heal slowly and he has had it for more than 2 months now so hopefully it will be clearing up as we approach the end of December and the fixture congestion.

All players will be rotated and I look upon him missing a game due to such an injury or suspension as one of those rotations.

Is double Wolves defence too risky? Can do Mendy > Bennett to free up some funds. Already have Doherty, and Ederson as City defensive cover.

    Complete defence is:
    Ederson - Hamer
    Robbo - Alonso - AWB - Mendy* - Doherty.

It's long term I'm most worried about. Just can't see that many long term options in the same price bracket that are worth getting. I mean; can we trust West Ham to keep clean sheets? Balbuena seems VERY popular for some reason.

        Why Vinagre over Bennett?

He is Jonny's direct replacement and is attacking. The reason I don't like Bennett is his lack of attacking threat and bonus pts

    0FT £0.0m ITB

Can't really justify the -8 but feel the Mendy injury means time to go 3 at the back? Don't want to hold Mendy as I'll lose 100k on the price drop. Thoughts??
