Arsenal got back to winning ways as they saw off Burnley 3-1 in Gameweek 18’s Saturday lunchtime fixture.

With the matches that followed offering little in the way of Fantasy returns, success for managers this week largely depended on which Gunners were owned.

We’ve gone over the top talking points from the Emirates Stadium in this latest Scout Notes article.

Arsenal 3-1 Burnley

Goals: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang x2 (£11.5m), Alex Iwobi (£5.5m) | Ashley Barnes (£5.6m)

Assists: Sead Kolasinac (£5.0m), Alexandre Lacazette (£9.6m), Mesut Özil (£8.0m) | Kevin Long (£4.2m)

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.5m) owners were rewarded for their patience in Gameweek 18 as the Arsenal striker finally delivered the double-figure haul he has promised for some time. Not surprisingly, no player in Saturday’s match had more shots on target than Aubameyang, which underpinned his success. After comparing favourably in our recent Captain Sensible article, he scored twice in the Gunners’ 3-1 win over Burnley. With the number of chances he was having in recent weeks, Aubameyang had been unlucky not to find the net since the north London derby Gameweek 14. It looked as if his misfortune would continue on Saturday as he was denied by James Tarkowski‘s (£4.7m) goal-saving challenge in the opening minutes. But, in the 13th minute, the Gabonese international broke the deadlock after an excellent clip back from Sead Kolasinac (£5.0m).

That was good news also for those who kept faith in the Bosnian wing-back, as he had been a slight injury doubt ahead of the match. Kolasinac was arguably one of Arsenal’s best players at the Emirates Stadium, constantly asking Burnley questions with surging runs down the left wing and into the opposition box. Indeed, no player created more chances in the game than Kolasinac.

Alexandre Lacazette (£9.6m) started alongside Aubameyang for the second home match in a row. That possibly indicates that Emery does prefer using them together at the Emirates Stadium, rather than when Arsenal are away from home. The Frenchman’s owners may have been hoping for more than just an assist but it was a solid enough performance from Lacazette nonetheless. He looks likely to start against Brighton on Boxing Day as his minutes were managed in the 78th minute, coming off for Alex Iwobi (£5.5m). He wasn’t too happy about it either, visibily annoyed to have been substituted, which also bodes well for his desire to score in Gameweek 19.

“I didn’t see (him being angry). I think he is happy with our victory. He wants to score. When a striker doesn’t score I like he is angry with this situation. He worked very well today. I think he is going back to the best Lacaztte.” – Unai Emery

The fact that Lacazette was brought off with Arsenal leading the game, while Aubameyang was allowed to complete the 90 minutes, does cause some concern for owners of the former Borussia Dortmund man. Unai Emery may have left him on the pitch to avoid denying him a hat-trick, but the fact remains that Aubameyang has now played 270 minutes in the space of seven days. Lacazette getting some time off does mean he could start in his colleague’s place on Boxing Day.

Emery initially lined his Arsenal side up in a 4-3-1-2 formation with Sokratis Papastathopoulous (£5.1m) and Nacho Monreal (£5.4m) at centre-back, Kolasinac and Ainsley Maitland-Niles (£4.4m) flanking them. However, Monreal was forced off with a muscle injury in the 37th minute and had to be replaced by Stephan Lichtsteiner (£4.6m), further adding to Emery’s concerns at the back. At that point, he switched to a back-three with Granit Xhaka (£5.3m) dropping to centre-back alongside Lichtsteiner and Sokratis while Kolasinac and Maitland-Niles pushed on as wing-backs.

“Muscular, we made the change to not take a big risk with him. I don’t know if he can play at Brighton. Koscielny can play and Mustafi is close.” – Unai Emery

The ongoing defensive crisis at Arsenal continues to hurt their clean sheet potential. Coming into Gameweek 18, no team had registered fewer shots on target away from home this season than Burnley. However, the Clarets troubled their illustrious hosts on several occasions, even recording more chances considered to be big by Opta. It was, therefore, no surprise when Ashley Barnes (£5.6m) fired Burnley back into the game in the second half. That means that the main reason Kolasinac has Fantasy appeal is his attacking threat, rather than anything Arsenal can offer defensively.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.7m) and Robbie Brady (£5.4m) were not fit enough to play the match, which forced Burnley into a 5-3-2 formation. While both wide-men could return in Gameweek 19, Sean Dyche may opt to keep that shape when Everton come to Turf Moor on Boxing Day as it did allow his side to attack Arsenal with numbers through the middle. However, we were unable to get any fitness updates from the Clarets manager as the majority of his press conference, doubling up as the one in advance of Gameweek 19, was dominated by his strong opinions on diving in football.

Arsenal XI (4-3-1-2): Leno; Kolasinac; Monreal (Lichtsteiner 37′), Sokratis, Maitland-Niles; Guendouzi, Xhaka, Elneny (Torreira 59′); Özil; Lacazette (Iwobi 78′), Aubameyang.

Burnley XI (5-3-2): Hart; Taylor, Mee, Tarkowski, Long, Bardsley (Lowton 83′); Hendrick, Cork, Westwood; Wood (Vokes 77′), Barnes (Vydra 77′).

Doing Anderson + Mitro >> Martial + Rashford feel so right and wrong 🙁

    - Anderson and Mitrovic both talisman for their teams
    - both nailed on
    - Anderson on decent form whilst Mitro is off form but both have very high goal involvement
    - both have great fixtures in the next 2

Why am I making the move?
    - is better to move out Son (who also have two plum home games)?
    - perhaps just take out the Mitro and keep Anderson/son and carry over Ft?

You'll need a playing bench over the festive period bud. Then use 2 Ft to sort out Ryan and downgrade an attacker then after the FA CUp break.

Interesting that this year's title is turning into a war of attrition. It is pretty much the default for both City and Liverpool that they will win so far this season, but there's at least a correlation between the number of injuries to City's key players and the number of points they have dropped compared to Liverpool.

Also interesting that Liverpool have had greater struggles against top five-six opponents, whereas for City its been shock results against lesser teams (Wolves and Palace). With Salah coming back into form over the last month and De Bruyne and Kun back in the City squad, the game on the 3rd will be huge - could be a real tipping point if Liverpool can win it.

It'll be on City to go for the game and win... Which will definitely work in the favour of liv who can play counter attacking football really well

Ya Salah looks unplayable again. Mane and Bobby's form has been poor tho so imagine how good we'll be if and when they start to click.
I always said about City that they need to hit a bad spell. We kinda rode our luck playing poorly but still grinding out results. City on the other hand were battering teams by 4 or 5 which is not sustainable. I agree tho that Aguero KDB and Silva injuries have had a massive impact and rightly so as they are so good

I'd say that Liverpool this season have me reminded of some of the Ferguson-era Man Utd teams - solid and dependable, whereas City's style is still flair and fireworks. As you say that's unsustainable in the long run and we all know how much success Ferguson had with his 'dependable but attacking' style. Klopp's a clever guy...

Not necessarily in need of a forward big hitter. The forward industry is the least performing out of the three outfield positions. I have, hence, opted for 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 formations. Better money utilisation.

I think it depends on what formation I set out to play. If my formation is set on 3-5-2 or 4-4-2, keeping a 6.0m range striker on the bench is not something I’d want as I want to utilise that funds in the first starting lineup.

Not knee jerking but how does this sound?

Hen fraser - steele lingard -4

Im fairly confident lingard can repay the hit over the next few, i would wait and do it for free but hudderfield at home is juicy

Risk reward. Uniteds fixtures a lot better than Bournemouth plus United new manager factor.

Kept faith with Deulofeu and had great returns the past 2 weeks! Would you play him against Chelsea? Or bench for Bennett (Ful)?

Tò be honest Sterling last night was close to get 1 or 2 assist, Sane hit the post - bad luck for cappers, just one of those days.

Good thing about this time of the year is that game are coming thick & fast and you can get away with being squiffy all long 😉

Cheer up everyone who had a bad score this week, tables will turn for you.

Am I benching correct players for GW19?

    Fabianski
    Alonso - Doherty - Digne
    Hazard - Salah - F.Anderson - Sane - Richarlison
    Jimenez - Rashford

    Button - Lovren(NEW) - AWB(CAR) - Wilson (tot)

I would play AWB over Digne, Burnley looked better against Arsenal and they are at home.

    An advice ? (currently overall 100 000)

    Patrico-Hamer

    Alonso-Robertson-Doherty-Kolasinac-Balbuena

    Sterling-Hazard-Richarlison-Fraser-Camarasa

    Kane-Lacazette-Success

    Sterling + Lacazette + Fraser > Salah + Jimenez + Martial for - 4 ?

    Thanks

I'll stick my neck out and say Digne and D.Luiz, simply because they are away, and at teams who are starting to play a little better.

I'm probably going to switch out one of my mids for Utd cover this week.

I've noticed people suddenly moving for Pogba. He has spent the last part of a year doing so little under Mourinho that I've forgotten what he actually does. Is he really an attacking midfielder or more of a centre-of-the-park all-rounder? Isn't Martial (who seems more of a forward) a better pick? There are worries about rotation with Martial but he's one of the best players they've got so with more level-headed -albeit inexperienced- manager in charge shouldn't he be playing every game if fit? Lingard at a push too for the same reasons.

My feeling with Pogba is he's going to be more of one of those assisting the assister players even if the team does have a sudden surge of form.

Can anyone help me with this?

I wouldn't get caught up in this, just watch a reel of his goals for United and see what he can do when he's in the mood.

I was referring to Pogba. I guess he's more of a punt and yes, less likely to produce outright attacking returns than Martial, but he's nailed on. When Lukaku is back 3 into 4 doesn't for the front 3 and we don't know who loses out yet
