Fantasy Premier League managers are about to be treated to a £4.0m starting goalkeeper from Gameweek 20 onwards.

Brighton shot-stopper Mathew Ryan (£4.5m) is heading to the Asian Cup with Australia, leaving a vacancy open in Sussex.

That and many other Fantasy talking points are included in this latest Scout Notes article.

Brighton 1-1 Arsenal

Goals: Jürgen Locadia (£5.3m) | Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.5m)

Assists: Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m)

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.5m) continued to deliver on his promising expected goals score from recent weeks. He came into Gameweek 19 top of the pile for expected goals in the four matches prior to Boxing Day and found the net once again against Brighton. It was something of a surprise to see him in the starting line-up yet again, despite playing 90 minutes in his seven previous Premier League appearances and lasting the duration in the recent EFL Cup quarter-final defeat to Spurs. However, he completed another match and seems to be largely unaffected by the busy festive schedule. After all, it seems completely improbable that Unai Emery would now rest him for the Gameweek 20 trip to Liverpool.

It was Alexandre Lacazette (£9.5m) alongside Aubameyang up front once again and he was limited to just an assist for the third match in a row. Emery seems very keen to manage the Frenchman’s minutes more than others around him as he was substituted in the 61st minute. Lacazette is now without a 90-minute Premier League outing since Gameweek 12, and without a goal since Gameweek 14. Not surprisingly, he did not look best pleased about being substituted again.

It was another match in which Arsenal were not leading at half-time, their Gameweek 18 win over Burnley still the only occasion where that happened this season. Emery made yet another change at the interval with Mesut Özil (£8.0m) replaced by Alex Iwobi (£5.5m), Emery confirming it was tactical and not injury related.

“No. It was only tactically. We did before, in other matches also change the idea from the first half with other players. And today I did it with Mesut, that is only tactically, not another problem. Tactically some matches I did that. I wanted to control better the positioning on the pitch, but in the second half, we couldn’t do our ideas on the pitch to impose. We created less chances in the second half.” – Unai Emery

Arsenal were indeed a lot flatter in the second half, almost looking happy to take a point in the closing stages. Laurent Koscielny (£5.4m) needed to be substituted with a knock in the 70th minute and now needs assessing for Gameweek 20.

“Saturday is another match. We will recover the players, we are going to look at how Koscielny is and if Mustafi is OK. While we are close to top four, I can have big motivation.” – Unai Emery

Brighton were the side that looked more like winning the clash in the second half with striker Jürgen Locadia (£5.3m) a key threat for the Seagulls. He started a second consecutive match on the left flank of midfield, at the expense of Anthony Knockaert (£5.4m), who appears to have been reduced to the role of an impact sub. It was Locadia who was able to capitalise on Stephan Lichtsteiner‘s (£4.5m) mistake and equalise for Brighton. Chris Hughton was very pleased with him, and his performance could suggest further involvement in the team.

“I’m really pleased that he played well, even more pleased that he got the goal.” – Chris Hughton

One of the main reasons why Aubameyang wasn’t able to add to his solitary goal at the Amex Stadium was an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Ryan. However, Brighton will now have to do without him as Hughton confirmed that he joined Australia for their training camp ahead of the Asian Cup on Monday morning.

“Maty will go in the morning. We will miss him because he has been very good for us but we’ve also got two other, I think, very good goalkeepers (David Button and Jason Steele). It’s an opportunity now for one of them.” – Chris Hughton

As you can see from Hughton’s post-match quotes, the goalkeeper jersey is still up for grabs with one of either David Button (£4.0m) or Jason Steele (£4.0m) to fill in for Ryan while he is away. Thankfully, it won’t matter which one is chosen because their prices mean we are guaranteed a starting £4.0m goalkeeper for as long as Australia, one of the pre-tournament favourites, are still at the Asian Cup.

Button was the clear favourite in pre-season having played more minutes than any other Brighton shot-stopper other than Ryan, while Steel was not involved at all. Button was also on the substitutes’ bench for the first nine Premier League Gameweeks and started August’s EFL Cup defeat to Southampton. However, he was injured in November and was replaced by Steele on the Brighton bench ever since. That said, the Gameweek 19 draw with Arsenal was Button’s first appearance as the understudy to Ryan since Gameweek 9.

Brighton XI (4-5-1): Ryan; Bernardo, Balogun, Dunk, Montoya; Locadia (Knockaert 86′), Pröpper, Stephens, Groß, March; Murray (Andone 79′).

Arsenal XI (4-3-1-2): Leno; Kolasinac, Koscielny (Maitland-Niles 70′), Sokratis, Lichtsteiner; Guendouzi, Xhaka, Torreira; Özil (Iwobi 45′); Lacazette (Ramsey 62′), Aubameyang.

Midfield is Salah, Hazard Richalison and snodgrass. Snodgrass to pogba move not possible and dont want to lose the other three. But Pogba looking irresistible

As we move from gameweek 19 to gameweek 20, it may be a little time to assess. What have we done well, what have we gotten right and what are strategies we are going to take moving forward?

For me right now, I'm ranked around 30k which isn't the worst but considering i was in the top 10k a few weeks back, it stings a little. Started off the season well largely by following the "template" and getting on a few trains earlier than others eg. Hazard before his outburst, Ryan for his first 3 clean sheets etc.

Did pretty well until recent weeks where my poor captain choices(looking at you Mr. Harry have dragged me back a bit). Also took a fair amount of risks on my wildcard. Some of which so far have paid off(Digne, Lloris), some have not (Lacazette, Laporte, Bellerin, no pool cover)

Plan for next half of the season is what i call- to be boring with some spice" till dgw. Safe caps, no hits but will get in some differentials like vardy. I have also thought about skipping the dgw cap and using it on the last day when there seem to be goals flowing like water and also shift money back to the defence at a time people seem to be doing the opposite.

Interested to know what others plans and reflections are for the second half and the first?

My season sounds exactly the same as yours, to the letter. Looking back and thinking I needed to be "boring" when i was in the top 10k, rather than pushing to try and win the whole thing with cheeky transfers.

Digne has been a big success, though!

Haven't had a set in stone strategy, following a lot of trends, doing well to avoid "bargain" bandwagons, and trying to cram in premium assets while keeping Alonso.

Back-to-back red arrows after moving from 2.3mil (gameweek 3) to 67k (gameweek 17) has me now 150k: Salah & Rich to Sterling & Sané has hurt me.

Now plan to slowly shift the cash from City assets to bring in Salah, Richarlison and Pogba over the next few weeks.

Season has gone unusually well. Currently at 10k. Considering I have never entered the top 100k in past season at any point, I'm absolutely buzzing!

Reflections, well, captaincy choices have been more or less okay. Highlight has been going City less a few weeks ago, JUST before they decided to forget to play football. How the f*** did that work?!

Plans, well, catch the United train. Southampton looking resurgent and full of bargains. Go for players I think will do well.

      Best season ever!

Great timing on City. Sometimes i wonder if they are even worth the bother. Went city less for large portions of large season. Only got aguero when jesus was injured amd vice versa. Then had sterling and kdb for just a few (bad) games. Didn't have sterling or kdb when they were tearing things up. Still managed a respectable finish. Ville Ronka seems to have adopted a similar approach this season and has done well. I will ship out Sane for Hazard soon and Laporte should become Robbo. I think the key with City is when they go off and score loads, try hold your nerve and believe in your team. Easier said than done

      - Dropped from 8k to 40k after swapping Haz and Salah for Sane, Son and Auba
      - Seriously considering playing my 2nd WC soon to bring back Haz and Salah and doubling up on LIV defence, not to mention responding to BOU's abysmal form and City's deteriorating defence
      - My view is that DGWs have pretty high variance in terms of outcomes and Free Hit and BB chips can still be utilised somewhat effectively even without the 2nd WC

Captaincy options letting me down... I have only had a single 10+ captain choice all season. If I had picked the right captain 2-3 times I would have been top 10-20k, instead Im 90k. I really hate the captaincy factor in this game.

My luck hasn't been that bad in the entirety of the season but have struggled of recent. 1, 5, 6 etc. It's quite frustrating as you said sometimes. This week, my ML rival didn't do so great but put the cap on martial and vice on hazard. I put it on kane and automatically that's lile 15 points gained. Maybe more considering he has kane and i don't even have hazard.
However that said, i think it balances out and you should soon start seeimg some big scores. Do you cap differentials

        1. Brosstan

I capped a differential once this season, Vardy against Everton (2p) while Hazard got 14 against SOU away. Vardy was in very good form then and Everton looked poor defensively.

Salah 8p (C), Kun 20p (VC). Aguero 7p (C), Hazard 20p (VC). Salah 2p (C), Aguero 13p (VC). Sterling 2p (C), Auba 13p (VC)... The kind of decisions that have fallen the wrong way.

Just feels do dumb when its basically a coin flip who to cap and who to vice cap to have it end up being a 50+ point swing over half a season.

Couldn't relate to this more. Boring selections got me to top 100, tried to be a bit different went to top 1k, tried to be over smart and now outside top 30k. Swapped Hazard and Salah out was my downfall. Kane Auba Sterling haven't delivered as much as I thought they would.

Sane to Pogba- is the most obvious and popular transfer for next gw.

One in great form playing for rejuvenated side and nailed on to start vs One who's not nailed on playing for a team with low confidence.Ohh how the tables have turned. Didn't see this coming at all

I have the same dilemma and i don´t think it will give me the best position overall but i like to have options and it also makes me think more about the games, trying to analyse how i think they will turn out be, to make me do judgement calls. I usually get this right, and Digne was played over Luiz. People might have been somewhat clouded by the Spurs game, but to me, shipping in six goals usually creates a reaction and while i was not sure about Evertons defence keeping cleanie i was almost certain that Watford would score vs Chelsea.

People have different tactics and playing styles, and seemingly there is many ways to do well in this game.

Thoughts of going without City players? Surely they're too good not to have any but should we go for form? Sterling to Hazard seems the obvious transfer this week. What do you think?

I am starting to get fed up with Ederson as my pick and leave keeper. Even when City were on fire, they seemed to leak a goal. Now with a full scale breach to non top 6, is it time to finally transfer out to free up funds?

Same could be said for Alonso in defense too!

Have 2 FTs and much as I hate to use them at the back thinking of

    Ederson to Fab
    Alonso to Digne
