FPL Question Time – The best Man City triple-up for Double Gameweek 32

Manchester City and Chelsea are the two teams on the lips of Fantasy managers ahead of Double Gameweek 32.

Both clubs have very appealing fixtures across the expanded round of action, hence the interest in them.

We’ve taken plenty of questions about them and other Double Gameweek 32 talking points in this latest edition of FPL Question Time.

Who’s on the panel this week?

The General – finished in the top 500 three times in the last five seasons and a regular guest on the Official FPL Show

Tom fromWho Got the Assist? – Popular FPL podcast run by dynamic duo Tom and Nick

David Munday – Editor of Fantasy Football Scout and regular guest on the Official FPL Show

Question 1 – General

B91JH: Should I look at Manchester City defence, with options such as Ederson or Laporte or a third attacker like Bernardo or David Silva?

General: “The closer we get to the weekend, the more I’m leaning towards a Manchester City defensive asset rather than the likes of Bernardo Silva and David Silva.

“Ederson is the only Citizens player we can be confident of getting two 90-minute outings in Double Gameweek 32 so that’s where I’ll probably end up.

“A key for me in my Free Hit this week is to get players who have a high chance of playing twice and the Brazilian certainly ticks that box.

“Triple City attack does tempt me but there is so much competition in midfield and with players returning to fitness, we can’t predict who will get significant minutes.

“The Silva’s have zero goals between them since Gameweek 20 while I fancy City to keep two clean sheets.”

Question 2 – Tom

Muke108uk: With wolves and Watford playing in the FA Cup cup are you avoiding their players?

Tom: “Undeniably there are great, kindly priced options at both clubs who could do a job for you in a Double Gameweek.

“However, what both teams do have in common is a worrying depth of squad in many key spots, meaning you could well see rotation bite.

“The only one who may escape this could be Raúl Jimenez at Wolves. He’s their talisman and doesn’t seem to have a backup in the same way that, say, Andre Gray could come in for Troy Deeney.

“The Mexican is also highly owned, so having him could be an effective ‘shield’ pick against those who are not currently using their Free Hit chip.”

Question 3 – David

Guest: Who are the best defenders and goalkeeper options for Double Gameweek 32?

David: “There are a number of decent options in both of those positions that offer clean sheet potential and much more.

As we recently discovered in our analysis of the goalkeepers, Ederson looks like the best player in his position if you’re not looking elsewhere for Manchester City cover.

“The Citizens have both defensive form and favourable fixtures this week so going with either their goalkeeper or someone who can offer more goal threat like Laporte or Otamendi could work out for you.

“Although Chelsea are hard to trust, we can see that Kepa Arrizabalaga has a number of avenues for points.

“The Blues fixtures are favourable and he’s made a healthy number of saves from shots outside the box in the last four matches too – potential for a decent haul. His role in the side could also help David Luiz or Cesar Azpilicueta although on recent form I’m not hugely confident of attacking returns.

“I really like the cheaper options on offer at Crystal Palace.

“Vicente Guaita could be a great budget signing if you’re confident he’ll keep his place against Huddersfield.

“Everybody is a big fan of Aaron Wan-Bissaka for good reason, while Jeffrey Schlupp has recently stepped into the conversation playing in midfield.”

Question 4 – General

Syke63: With the deploying the Free Hit chip looking like it could be the ‘template’ move for this Double Gameweek, where can we find an angle to make progress in our mini-leagues?

General: “There is nothing wrong with having a template Free Hit team.

“For me, it’s the ‘template’ move for a reason: it’s the best players on paper for the Gameweek ahead.

“Focus on maximising your points potential rather than worrying about finding differentials.

“Put simply, pick the XI players you believe will score you the most points.

“It’s easy to feel like you have the same team as everyone else when you see other teams posted on social media and in FPL forums but, there won’t be as many managers Free Hitting this week as you think.

“The ‘template team’ will be a differential in itself if it scores big, look at it that way.

“After all, a large number of managers played their Free Hit chip in Blank Gameweek 31 so even just playing it on an exciting Double Gameweek should make the difference you need.”

Question 5 – Tom

The Sociologist: With their favourable fixtures, but questionable form, what do you think of a Chelsea defensive double-up for Double Gameweek 32?

Tom: “Chelsea are an odd defence to figure out.

“Over the last six Gameweeks, they are the fourth-best for attempts conceded and for shots in the box conceded.

“However, that’s counterbalanced by them having conceded the fourth-most big chances in that same period.

“It’s a defence that is largely solid but is perhaps prone to mistakes.

“It has shades of Liverpool last week – a sword alternative could be one defender and then Higuain alongside the obvious Hazard buy.

“It’s always a gamble doing a defensive double up, but one that offers a rich reward if it comes off.

“With the duo of fixtures in the Double Gameweek, it could do just that, given how we have to squeeze others into the Free Hit, be the ideal way to represent them.”

Worked out a better one! What do you think?

    A) Kane, Lindelof, Montoya
    B) Rashford, Alli, Rudiger

Not keen on any tbh. Could you get Higuain instead of Alli in option B?

Wouldn't double up on Chelsea defensively if that was your OG plan

Don't want Higuain, Hazard is enough for me as they don't score too many. Option A means no double-up

I think generally there is a template for the FH teams. Everyone has Aguero, Hazard, Sterling, Ederson/Kepa, Pogba, Laporte/David Luiz, cheap CPL defender, Lindelof.

Let's consider the other ones. I'd love to hear what you guys think about the following players:

    1) Deulofeu: I think he starts MUN and comes off the bench in the second game.
    2) Kane: If Tottenham score, he's gonna be involved. Personally think he's a fantastic differential.
    3) Lukaku: Could run riot, also has a tendency to let people down when there's big bandwagons (burnt TCer here)
    4) Higuain: Shooting like crazy but nothing coming off, Chelsea being inconsistent, crazy easy fixtures that he could haul in.
    5) Rashford: Injured? Fit? Also seems to be in a bit of a dry spell in FPL recently. Great fixtures and very affordable.
    6) Batshuayi: Not very explosive, could grab a goal or two.
    7) Son: Very explosive but in a dry spell and with tough fixtures, also coming back from lots of minutes over the international break
    8) Knockaert: Affordable, decent matchup against SOU, inconsistent mins, in decent form of late
    9) Jimenez: Consistency personified but could be rotated and not very explosive
    10) Bernardo: Amazing real life performances that don't always translate to FPL, likely to start both games but might get rested with return of KDB/Fernandinho

      Great post.

I can’t fit Kane in alongside those other templates, and I can’t bring myself to go without the other templates.

Plus feel he is a huge price for someone we won’t captain.

I’m looking at Batshuayi or Zaha if fit, if palace score they should be involved, and they will certainly raise their game for spurs at the new ground.

Rashford will also be in so long as he is fit, but the wolves and Watford don’t appeal because of almost certain rotation ahead of the FAC semi.

I’m on 4-3-3 at the minute. Nothing really appeals to me in midfield beyond the template. Batshuayi and double Chelsea defence my ‘differential’

But might look at Higuaín if Rashford is ruled out

      Ederson
      Azpi, Luiz, Lindelof, AWB
      Hazard, Sterling, Pogba
      Rashford, Kun, Batshuayi

Will likely mate if Rashford is fit.

Won’t be far off this anyway.

Would love Kane in my team, but too many compromises with lowish TV. Thinking Higuain could be worth a punt.
Also want to keep Jimi, but can I trust him to play both? Could get decent returns from one math anyway.

      1. Delu: game time is risky. Defeats the point of a free hit.
      2. Kane: pricey, volatile, and on PK's. Could score back to back hat tricks or four points.
      3. Lukaku: stats look good, in my team, and hoping he gets a clean bill of health.
      4. Hig: decent, but playing for CHE
      5. Rashford: out of form.
      6. Bats: meh. Mili and Zaha are better options.
      7. Son: out of form.
      8. Knockaert: decent, but game time may be a risk.
      9. Jim: consistent, least likely to be rotated, and a great xGI for his price.
      10. B. Silva: under-performing all season.

Valid. Zaha's injury is of concern. Bats looks good with CRY.

Good questions. We should question the templates too as I'm avoiding Pogba.

1 - Decent pick given price and position. Favouring Babel slightly (shouldn't he be here too?) as Fulham need goals.
2 - in my team. huge price but huge potential. think Liverpool will concede and totts will look to go nuts first gam.
3 - in my team - scoring freely again apart from vs. Liverpool
4 - too risky with Giroud
5 - decent, though less points on the wing
6 - yes, an option if you're looking for a cheap 3rd striker
7 - jetlagged? not so much on form either, risk of rotation
8 - way too inconsistent, one eye on the semi?
9 - back in thinking after not playing for Mexico. definitely an option.
10 - rotation risk with everyone fit

I’m going without pogba, 9m is a lot for a centre mid with a dodge pen record. If I want haz, Sterling, kun, double chels def and Kane need to make a cut somewhere. Pogba is template, anyone else going without?

My take on this Free Hit, if you're trying to make a big surge up the rankings, is that the best overall sword/differential strategy is to largely ignore the defences of the big three teams with the best fixtures (City, Chelsea, United) and go for broke on the attack for a few big, big margins.

However the fixtures may look on paper, there is always a good chance of one random goal ruining a clean sheet. I'd say the most likely scenario for options like Ederson, Laporte, Luiz, Smalling etc is around 8 points (1 x CS, 1 x 2-pointer). Those are returns that can be potentially matched by the likes of Crystal Palace and Brighton defence. There's at least some hope of the cheaper options roughly matching the expensive ones.

But you move up the pitch that changes. If you've got Mili / Jota / Batshuayi or you've forced in Kane despite poor fixtures compared to others, I'd suggest you're better off simply loading up on a wider spread of premium attacking assets like Higuain, Pedro, Rashford, Dilva, Bilva etc. Surely these are the true differentials who actually could score big hauls based on the teams they play for and the incredible fixtures they have.

The Chelsea defensive double-up goes wrong as soon as they concede a scrappy goal, but Higuain can easily score a hat-trick in either of those fixtures. He really can. Just watch Chelsea's game vs Fulham and see how close that was to a 4-goal mega haul for Higuain. Cardiff and Brighton are precisely the kinds of opposition he can score a heap of goals against without even playing that well.

And if City completely thrash both opponents, somebody other than Sterling and Aguero has to be involved in the goals. There are going to be assists and goals flying in all over the place and the likes of Dilva and Bilva could easily be part of the action. But if you go for your safe Laporte / Ederson you're putting all your eggs in a double CS basket and it can quickly go wrong. I'd so much rather be cheering for goals galore than biting my nails that City don't win 6-1 not 6-0.

First time using FH properly (last year did it by mistake):
Is it worth holding on to players who you have value built up in, i.e. Pogba, Aguero etc who I bought early on?

No, don't worry about value. Your team reverts to the team you had at the end of GW31.
