Owners of attacking assets from Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers were left disappointed as the two clubs played out a goalless draw at the King Power Stadium on Sunday.

We’ll assess how Messrs Vardy, Jota and Jimenez performed in our Scout Notes article below, as well as looking at the other Fantasy talking points – including a disallowed goal after VAR intervention – from the Gameweek 1 stalemate.

Leicester City 0-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Defences were on top at the King Power Stadium in a match that featured just three shots on target.

Of the two sides’ backlines, it was arguably Wolves’ that impressed the most.

The now-familiar back three of Willy Boly, Conor Coady and Ryan Bennett (all £5.0m) were imperious, limiting the hosts’ attacking trio of James Maddison (£7.0m), Ayoze Perez (£6.5m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) to just one shot in the box all game.

Boly deservedly walked away with maximum bonus points as Wolves banked a well-earned clean sheet, with Rui Patricio (£5.0m) barely dirtying his gloves and only having to deal with one effort on target from the Foxes – an ambitious 25-yard effort from substitute Harvey Barnes (£6.0m).

The one glaring chance that Leicester had wasn’t even a shot: Vardy failing to make contact from three yards out when Youri Tielemans (£6.5m) fired over a low cross from the right.

The fact that Vardy had fewer touches than any of the 22 starting players in this match, and indeed one fewer than substitute Marc Albrighton (£5.5m) managed in a 14-minute cameo, was a testament to how expertly Boly and co handled the 32-year-old striker and his teammates.

Last week we wrote how Wolves had arguably underachieved on the clean sheet front in 2018/19 given their otherwise excellent underlying defensive stats, and there is every chance that Nuno Espirito Santo’s side will crack double figures for shut-outs this campaign on the further evidence of Sunday.

Santo said of the game and his defence:

I think it was a very good game of football. Leicester are a very good team in possession of the ball.

It requires a lot of effort from us, playing together, in shape. We defended well and didn’t allow too many chances to a very good team, and we had some good chances.

Despite the Foxes having 70% of the possession, it was Wolves that looked the more likely to score.

Caglar Soyuncu (£4.5m) earned praise for his display at the heart of the Leicester defence but as a collective, the Foxes’ high backline was exposed on a handful of occasions by a direct Wolves attack.

Brendan Rodgers’ insistence on his side playing out from the back also led to a dicey moment or two.

Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) and Diogo Jota (£6.5m) both broke free of the home side’s defence early in the second half but made a hash of their chances, Jimenez dallying before producing a tame shot that was comfortably saved before Jota screwed an effort horribly wide when racing clear of Jonny Evans (£5.0m).

Jota had earlier dispossessed Ricardo Pereira (£6.0m) on the touchline but could only stumble into the turf when bearing down on Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m).

The Portuguese striker’s shooting boots may have been misplaced this weekend but he was by far Wolves’ biggest threat on Sunday, his now-familiar driving runs from deep causing problems in the hosts’ backline and leading to another chance for the recently reclassified FPL forward on 40 minutes.

Indeed, no Premier League player registered more successful take-ons than Jota in Gameweek 1.

Jimenez was relatively anonymous by comparison and certainly has much to do to convince Fantasy managers that he is worth one million extra than Jota in FPL, even if he does take the odd spot-kick.

Like Wolves’ strike duo, Leander Dendoncker (£4.5m) is owned by more than 10% of managers in FPL.

No Fantasy midfielder priced under £6.5m is owned by more FPL bosses and the budget Belgian almost rewarded those who started him in Gameweek 1 with the perfect gift, only for his 52nd-minute goal to be chalked off after VAR intervention following a Boly ‘handball’.

Boly would have been given an assist for that goal, had it stood, and the French stopper had earlier been in thick of the action when a Wolves set-piece caused havoc in the Leicester box.

FPL managers may baulk at the price rises handed out to Matt Doherty (£6.0m) and Jonny (£5.5m) – neither of whom, for once, was involved in the opposition box on Sunday – but Boly, who scored the same number of goals as the Irish wing-back in 2018/19, is an intriguing cheaper alternative.

Boly and his fellow defenders pretty much nullified all four of Vardy, Maddison, Tielemans and Perez, with Rodgers saying of the latter’s debut:

Just going to take that bit of time. Just that little bit of fitness, he’s a little bit behind because he’s missed a little bit of pre-season. But he’s always a threat, he finds the spaces and he’s always looking to link the game and he wants to get in and score. It’s just time with him.

The Leicester boss was perhaps wary of Wolves’ attacking threat, meanwhile, opting to start defensive midfielder Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) over Albrighton and roll out a 4-3-3.

Explaining his formation, Rodgers said:

We played what would be 4-3-3 and that would put our front three up against their central defenders. Then, obviously, we looked to control that midfield area.

The threat that they have is that when they win it, they get two strikers through the middle and they spin out off that

I thought, in all fairness, that the players coped with it well. Cags (Soyuncu), who came in, I was really pleased for him.

Members Analysis

Leicester City XI (4-3-3): Schmeichel; Pereira, Soyuncu, Evans, Chilwell; Ndidi, Tielemans, Choudhury (Barnes 61′), Perez (Albrighton 76′), Maddison, Vardy.

Wolves XI (3-5-2): Patricio; Bennett, Coady, Boly; Doherty, Dendoncker, Moutinho, Neves (Saiss 81′), Jonny; Jimenez, Jota (Cutrone 76′).

Feeling twitchy after a mediocre Gameweek One. Anything worth changing here?

    Ederson/(Button)

    Robbo/VVD/Zinchenko/Digne/(Rico)

    Salah/KDB/Perez/Barkley/(Dendoncker)

    Kane/King/(Greenwood)

My original plan was to hold until GW3 for either a mini or full wildcard. But I'm paranoid about no Sterling and potential price rises for Man Utd attackers and my knee is starting to jerk. Stick to the plan or twist?

Oh okay you have a great team, ya maybe origi is the prime upgrade at the minute. You could even downgrade him to greenwood and then have 2m to upgrade Bilva or KWP the next week? But if you want to upgrade him to play 3 strikers it should be fine too

That downgrade of origi might be a good option since i don't see any other "good" 6-6.5 attackers atm. I ll take it in consideration. Tnx!

                The struggle is real.

Trossard to Buendia/Mcginn for free or save Ft?

Will be looking to do Fraser or Wilson to Martial or Rashford next week so will need to free up that money anyways.

Not sure if I should keep Trossard or be little aggressive with transfers before wildcard.
Both Buendia/McGinn seem to have the qualities to be a bargain this season.

It's not as clear cut as that. Similar to saying why would Ole change United team. We had obvious issues.

Ryan, VVD, TAA, Digne, Zinchenko and Wilson with nice returns. Captain Salah and sterling hat trick.

Had a brilliant Friday and Saturday. My Starting XI are from just 4 teams, so my Liverpool and City players, and triple Everton defence set me up nicely.

Went a bit stale yesterday as my tiple Wolves strikeforce blanked, although the VAR-denying goal by Donckers would have taken me to over 100.

Still, very happy overall, roll on GW2

Smooth: made a late decision to go 4-3-3, meaning I got Martial, Dunk and Wilson in for Wood, McGinn and Lundstram. Kane captaincy worked out thanks to his prolific last 7 minutes or so.

Rough: Could have been better had I put the armband on Sterling, but otherwise going into GW2 with a healthy well performing team.

Rough: Losing 2x LIV clean sheets, going with KWP over Dunk, Kane firing in the last minutes

Smooth would have to be my defence, happy with Montoya, Pope, Digne clean sheets, and a TAA assist.

      Pretty smooth: 88 points

Montoya clean sheet on the bench but I got the same from Soyuncu, with rotation planned.

Callum Robinson was a bit of a punt for me as I didn't fancy the 6.0 options, but it sounds like he showed enough promise to think he could be involved in some attacking returns in GW2.

I'll be saving my transfer unless there are any injuries this week.

Smooth - All my defence returned points (Ryan, Stones, VVD, TAA, Digne.) Had both Salah(c) and Sterling after contemplating going without one for a long while. Wilson assist was handy.

Rough - Bilva. Quite annoying. Had him mainly as a placeholder as he is at a good pricepoint, now might have to do an early transfer to avoid price drops. Barkley 1pointer and Greenwood bench were lowpoints also.

      Smooth: Meh.

Rough: That feeling of having a player score then having it chalked off (Dendoncker) is truly horrible. Even if the decision is right by the rules, watching the game there was nothing immediately wrong about it so wasn't expecting it.

    32. Lacabacca

Smooth: Went with 4 premium players in Salah, Sterling, Kane and KDB, all of whom returned well. Since they used up much of my cash, couldn't afford TAA/Roboo and had to go with VVD, and couldn't afford Pèrez and had to go with McGinn. Ended up with sweet 103 points.
Rough: Not much. Had Guilbert on my squad; not sure what to do with him after the no show.

Rough – Vardy, Perez, King and Siggy blanking.

Smooth – Salah (c), Pope, Montoya and Digne clean sheets, Walker assist and clean sheet, Sterling.

Heaton dunk and mcginn to Ryan Taylor and trossard. Move only cost me 4 pts this gameweek but I’m not in a position where I’m considering wasting 2 transfers to get rid of Taylor and trossard.

Obviously you got him for the first two GWs at least. A blank cannot change that or your season is going to be very kneejerky.

Next game vs Villa is a definite hold. Will look to Barnes/Wood, Pukki or Haller thereafter

      Defo hold for Villa.
But will then assess into GW3. If I have no other pressing tfrs, I might switch him just to avoid ‘losing’ a tfr.

Doubt Ederson will double rise so will switch back to Hendo end of week.

Bet he doesn't double rise. I could be wrong but don't think he will. Seeing as theres been no risers yet, its impossible to predict these things!

But yes, if using the WC get him in.

Shame about Rashford's comments re: penalties. I'd expect United and the other big clubs to benefit th most from VAR so it'd be nice to have some nailed on takers.

"I wouldn't say I'm the penalty-taker. There's four or five players that are 100% comfortable being in that situation. For the keepers it's more difficult, they don't know who's going to take it."

Just tweeted out by the FFScout account.

    A. Deeney (eve)
    B. Lundstram (CRY)
    C. Zouma (LEI)
    D. Jota (MUN)

    Thanks guys!

    Hi guys,

    Any BHA fan around here?

Started with Murray but kinda worried about what happened after 60min (Murray out and Maupay / Andone scored).

Would you consider a Murray > Maupay swap or should Murray start GW2?

    Cheers

I wouldn't do anything yet, no way to be sure what will happen. Potter is bedding people into the team, and looks like he'll switch things round depending on home/away.

Taking Tross out for the Watford game completely threw me.

United have fantastic fixtures but I'm not convinced at all. Chelsea defended far too high up the pitch and left loads of space in behind, with no pace to recover. Plus United have a lot of players to rotate into those front-3 positions (Sanchez and Greenwood and James)

      1. HurriKane

So ur telling martial is a bad option? I second that.

Very Good last season. Was involved in 14 goals (10g 4a) in only 18 pl starts last season

        - OOP. Playing striker.

        - Bargain price of 7.5m

        - Fixtures- wol CRY sot LEI whu in next 5

Plus sanchez out of favour, james and greenwood are too raw to start or displace martial

I think United are a bad option, plus a risk he'll lose minutes. Mainly the former.

    Currently on:

    Pope (Steklenburg)
    TAA, Robertson, Digne, Montoya, Lundstram
    Salah, Sterling, Barkley, Trossard, Dedonker
    Vardy, King, Jota

    Thinking:
    A) Robbo & Trossard to Stones/man u 5.5 & Martial (-4)
    B) Vardy to Rashford
    C) nothing at all!

    Thoughts?

1 week of fixtures is not enough time to make informed decisions, if you want to chase 0.1m value then go ahead but sitting quitely is probably the best option

I am thinking of rotating my forward with transfers.

Had Kane and now transferred for Aubameyang.
GW3 Aubameyang back to Kane or Rashford etc....

Is this to risky when it comes to prise raise?

Have Sterling and Salah so feel I can be a bit flexiable uo front.

You did have a fair amount of replies in your previous post, no?
But if it’s needed to be emphasized: switching premium strikers every gw is a recipe for disaster in terms of points, TV, and mental sanity.
