Captain Sensible

Fantasy Premier League managers had a relatively easy captaincy decision for Gameweek 2, until the European Super Cup came along.

A full 120-minute outing for some of Liverpool’s key assets on Wednesday night has thrown the cat amongst the pigeons to some extent.

We have factored the midweek action into our thinking as we strive to find the best captain for the upcoming weekend.

As per usual, the Captain Sensible article is here to compare the individual players against each other statistically, as well as examine the defences of the sides they will face in Gameweek 2.

As this uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Captain Poll results as of Thursday August 15

For the second week in a row Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) has absolutely stormed the captain poll, this time taking a 55% share at the time of writing.

Even though he scored a 12-point haul in Gameweek 1, it is still somewhat surprising to see him dominate the vote so convincingly, in light of Raheem Sterling’s (£12.1m) hat-trick against West Ham.

However, it looks as if most Fantasy managers have looked at the Gameweek 2 opposition to decide between the two premium midfielders.

Southampton were well beaten by Burnley at Turf Moor last week, the Clarets scoring three quick-fire goals in the second half.

Furthermore, the Saints were second bottom for clean sheets at home last season, keeping just three of them across the course of the campaign.

Meanwhile, it looks as if Fantasy managers are not getting too excited about Sterling’s 20-point haul from Gameweek 1 as Manchester City prepare to host Tottenham this weekend.

Sterling’s record against Spurs at the Etihad Stadium is not too shabby, two goals in his last three facing them at home.

But just 11.3% of voters in the poll believe the England international is the best captain option this week, a 44% gap between him and the leading option Salah.

The second-place spot in this week’s captain poll is occupied by Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m), who opened his Premier League account for the new season in last week’s 1-0 win over Newcastle.

The Gabonese forward is currently backed by 16% of our voters, who are most likely influenced by his record against Burnley.

Aubameyang has faced the Clarets three times since signing for Arsenal and has scored twice in each one of them.

Outside of the top three is a host of will differentials in this week’s poll.

There’s a rather unexpected left-field choice in fourth place as Josh King (£6.5m) finds himself as the best of the rest.

Ahead of Bournemouth’s trip to Aston Villa, 1.8% of the voters are preparing to take a punt, while 1.76% of them are plumping for Aubameyang’s new colleague Nicolas Pépé (£9.5m).

Marcus Rashford (£8.5m), Teemu Pukki (£6.5m), Sadio Mané (£11.5m), Callum Wilson (£8.0m) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (£8.0m) are the only other options with more than 1% support.

I'm not a Norwich fan, but Stiepermann and McLean took the last two when Pukki was on the pitch. They all missed so it's a bit up in the air.

Find it a shame this game doesn't reward risk taking. Feel like if they gave you 2 fee transfers a week it would be a lot more fun / dynamic.

I don't, the majority would bring in Aubameyang this week and captain him, then reverse the move to Kane next week. It would be too easy, IMO.

    4. Valar(Keith)
      • 16 Years
      6 years, 11 months ago

If there's any change I'd kinda hope for a set 34 transfers at the start of the season(+3 chips and WC). Then whoever wanted to make 15 transfers after the opening day could.. But they d be stuck with just 19 for the rest of the season after that. Risk vs reward. Could see the patient players being rewarded in that scenario and a lot of different tactics coming in to play.

      1. Valar(Keith)
        • 16 Years

And after your 34 and 4 chips.. No hits allowed. No transfers whatsoever. That would be amazing 🙂

Yup. And I loved it. Nothing will ever beat early fpl though. 1 WC.. No chips.. So you just had to play patient with your 36 transfers. Was pretty hardcorre and fun

Salah, Pool only took a half to destroy Norwich so even 60 minutes against the Saints should see a good chance of a return.

Captaining Sterling against Spurs, CL finalists, isn't something I've even contemplated. Both matches finished 1-0 last season, can see City edging it but not by a huge margin.

Who do you think will find form and step up to score big this GW, and why?

Maybe someone who hasn't had a double digit score in a while, who has a series of no attacking returns, or has very low ownership.

Do you think it will be an already-established name in many of our sides or someone who is a major differential?

Have you seen something in a someone's play or in their stats to make you think they could be ready for a breakout GW?

I have no idea how no one commenting on this doesn't get my point. This thread is about GW2 and the comment I replied to was saying he was gonna get 5 assists against Burnley. All I am saying is Willock is clearly ahead of anyone else for the #10 position THIS weekend.

I get your point 🙂 I'm just not sure he starts vs Burnley because Ozil and Ceballos have had an extra week of pre-season. Emery may start one of those two.

But, I agree. He definitely deserves the chance to start vs Burnley based on his performance vs Newcastle.

Too early in the season for most of these questions, but eyes on Harry Wilson at Bournemouth, though. If he starts this week, what will his impact be on Fraser (set pieces)?

How will Pukki go against a weaker team at home. Looked very lively last week.

Sterling will score big because I don't own him.

Aubameyang will be the stand out player I think. I would like Wilson to punish all the people who went for King instead. Could see a big score from Digne also. Wished I owned but doesn't fit my team.

I'd wish people would start answering the question that started the thread, and not just throw out own hopes and dreams for their own team. It does not make a fruitful discussion in any way.

For this GW, I support those who say BOU attackers will get something, be it one of the Wilsons, or the Scottish Messi.

Also, ARS and LIV should score at least a couple goals each, so Mané and Pépé should be ready for goals or assists.

WAT are poor at set pieces, and I would guess Digne and Kean if he starts should benefit from that.

SHU vs CPL could be a goalless affair, which means defenders might return 6-9 points easily. Perhaps 4.0-defs will prove good options, in Lundstram and Kelly.

That's one good thing this change brought, but trying to guess the transfers at the ending phase of the season is crucial

      1. @persecuted_by_mods
        6 years, 11 months ago

Yeah but it should be a guess and only that. It's the best change they've made in ages. Can't imagine the sheer amount of terrible players who were getting good ranks simply copying the good players

Toon fan, Bruce isn't a Premier League quality manager - there's a reason he's on the lowest wages of any manager in the league. He's a nice guy but it's a massive backward step from last season.

One thing I'm trying to do less of this year is be pressurised into moves due to price rises.

Sometimes can work out well but often you end up rushing into a move you didn't need to make.

    1. Valar(Keith)
      • 16 Years

Yup. Towards the end of the season money doesn't matter anyway. Its only at the start that ppl get obsessed with it. If you consider that most 5.5 to 6.5 players get an average of 4 ppg you are basically playing with 10 outfield players if you take 38 hits in a season. Ppl don't realise that there are always alternatives and that no matter who the player is you'll always get premiums scoring 5 to 7 ppg and mid priced scoring 4 to 5 ppg and budgets scoring 3 to 4 ppg over a season.. So ideally you want to stick with your player for a while. Every good player becomes a bandwagon at some point in the season.. And you don't want to hop off to another one just cause yours isn't one yet.

For about 15 years now I've been finishing with respectable ranks, but last year I got off to a poor start, abandoned my philosophy and took panic hits. I spent the whole season taking more panic hits trying to catch up. Like a desperate gambler, I spiralled out of control. Ain't gonna happen again! Stay calm be patient.

I started with 3, but at the very minimum you get Donkers, and then start him.
I've got J&J too, but there's value in defence - well Boly; maybe others are too expensive now.
