Captain Poll

Fantasy Premier League managers have been handed the first captaincy conundrum of the season ahead of Gameweek 3.

After relatively simple debates for the armband in the opening two rounds of matches, it is wide open this week.

Despite amassing more than 50% support for Gameweek 2, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) blanked at Southampton, which could dent his appeal for the visit of Arsenal to Anfield on Saturday.

However, the Egyptian registered a goal and an assist last time he hosted the Gunners in the Premier League, while it is likely that he and his team-mates will have shaken off any cobwebs following the Super Cup final too.

With Arsenal bottom of the league for clean sheets in away matches last season, Sadio Mané (£11.5m) might enter the conversation this week after he registered a goal and assist against Southampton. The former Saint also scored a goal against Arsenal last season.

However, the man with the best record against the Gunners in 2018/19 was Roberto Firmino (£9.5m), who netted three goals in two such matches last term.

The Brazilian has registered attacking returns in both Gameweeks of 2019/20 so far too.

Those put off by Liverpool’s recent displays might turn to Manchester City’s attack as they prepare for a trip to Bournemouth.

The Cherries are without a clean sheet so far this season and had one of the worst defences last season.

That said, Manchester City scored just once on their last visit to the Vitality Stadium, Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) getting the goal.

Either way, Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) has made an excellent start to the new campaign, with four goals in his first two matches, which is certainly captainable form.

Kevin de Bruyne (£9.6m) has begun 2019/20 in a similar vein, with three assists and four bonus points so far and a total score of 18.

Those invested in the Belgian to save money can probably feel more confident putting the armband on him than they did ahead of Gameweek 1.

Presenting a third fixture for us to consider are Spurs, who host Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

The Magpies have already conceded four times this season, letting in three goals on their travels.

In Gameweek 1, Spurs had 31 shots at home against Aston Villa so we might expect a similar volume on Sunday afternoon.

That could be good news for Harry Kane (£11.0m), who scored twice in that match.

We should remember that Son Heung-min (£9.5m) will be back from suspension for Gameweek 3 and could improve Spurs going forward if he is handed a start by Mauricio Pochettino.

You can now vote in our latest captain poll either below or in the sidebar of our website.

Joe and David will be discussing the tricky debate live on our YouTube channel at 12:30pm BST.

It was always reasonable to assume some dysfunction early in given lack of preseason together and Super Cup but the cobwebs should be blown off by now and not a lot of signs that Arsenal are any steadier at the back.

Pukki is ruining all the mid price strikers' price. Very annoying but also potentially an opportunity. Kean going down to 6.9m is interesting if he can start soon and get scoring. Also good opportunity for Jota and even Deulofeu to make owners pay for ditching.

think best to ride the pukka train as it seems win win

either he maintains form and you got this years jiminez
or he fails and you make 0.2 (after a 0.4 gain say) and re-invest in haller/kean/jota who all drop 0.1 in the meantime.

worst case scenario is you miss out on the next bandwagons points (lets say kean gets a brace against villa) but pocket 0.3m in the meantime and ride the next money train

    Thoughts on this WC team?

    Pope
    VVD - Laporte - Digne - AWB
    Mane - Sterling - KDB - Martial
    Pukki - Barnes

    (4.0 - Cantwell - Lundstarm - Greenwood)

    Changes I'm considering:
    1. VVD & Laporte or TAA & Zinchenko?
    2. AWB/Digne (442) or 6-6.5m mid (352)?

What's the thought on Kellys spot in the CP side?
    1. When are Tomkins and/or Sakho expected to get back?
    2. Would Kelly be dropped then or just moved over to right back?

      1. Not sure about Tomkins or Sakho but Cahill has been on the bench the last couple so could be threat soon.
      2. I do remember Kelly playing RB when Wan-Bissaka was suspended last season but not sure if Ward was fit at the time or not.

Hits aren't generally too popular around here, but for a -8 I can get the 4 players who would probably be the first picked on a Wildcard after Sterling, to replace 4 players I mostly want to get rid of as soon as possible. The team I'd be left would look pretty much like the team I would Wildcard, except that I get to keep my WC chip for later. Not 100% committed to it yet, but it's so tempting. Take the hits and move on with a team I absolutely love.

    Wilson > Pukki
    Moura > KdB
    Lamela > Martial
    VVD > Lundstram

Have exact money to do this, and will be priced out by next round of price changes. So it's now or never.

VVD obviously the main who could bite me longer term, but I do still have TAA. To me those upgrades look well worth a -8 and keeping the WC. I already have Pope, TAA, Digne, Montoya, Salah, Sterling, Trossard, Jota.

    Any thoughts? Maverick or genius?

That's what I'm thinking. I wouldn't take a -8 unless it was for something that looks this perfect. I mean the team I'd have afterwards would not look completely out of place as a WC team in my opinion. In my head the -8 gets forgotten quite quickly, if not this GW then soon afterwards. But it's still a -8, always risky.

          Pope (Heaton)
          TAA - Digne - Montoya/Lundstram (Rico)
          Salah - Sterling - KdB - Martial - Trossard
          Pukki - Jota (Greenwood)

Is it really much different to a WC team? From there the next steps would be downgrading Trossard (Ceballos, Cantwell, McGinn, etc) in order to upgrade Rico to a real option in 4.5-5.5m region.

I would do it. But you are “committing” to this team for a bit, as it would be too silly to WC after GW 4 for example. GL!

Yes absolutely. If I do this, it means I'm pushing the WC right back. This is essentially my WC team and I'm paying 8 points to keep it. Obviously I can still make weekly transfers to tinker around the edges, but I'd be committed to the core of the team.

I think so. I think Klopp is being a bit cautious with him after the injury. He’s the best CB to partner VVD they looked awesome together last season

I wouldn't be surprised if he did. I would, however, be surprised if he started over Matip rather than over TAA.
We've looked more solid with Matip there since Gomez' injury, but more solid defensively (and weaker offensively) when he's deputized for TAA at right back.

Surprised the captain poll is so close as not many people have Kane.

Is there anyone with Kane and Sterling who is captaining the City man?
