A cost-effective fourth midfielder that can rival the premium options for points potential is often the key that unlocks a perfect Fantasy Premier League team.

Managers across the world will be searching for the best candidates for this position over the international break, especially those on a Wildcard.

In order to find them, we have compared a handful of midfielders priced at £6.5m or below to see how they got on in the first four Gameweeks.

The key is to find which of them is offering sustainable output from Gameweek 5 onwards which means analysing their underlying statistics.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Who carries the best goal threat?

Lessons learned from Gameweek 4

    1 FT, 0 ITB. A, B or C? Thanks!

    A) AWB > Matip/Maitland Niles
    B) AWB & Jota > Guilbert & Haller (-4)
    C) AWB & Jota > Maitland Niles & Barnes (-4)

    Pope - Button
    AWB - VVD - Digne - Zinchenko - Lundstram
    Sterling - KDB - Salah - Martial - Dendocker
    Pukki - Jota - Greenwood

I like B, but only because you get Haller in. I don't think you need to lose AWB. He'll be fine

Arsenal fans out there...how nailed is Maitland Niles? Will he be replaced by Bellerin and if so, how soon?

Realistically he is going to struggle to play regularly further forward. Very useful squad player though if he doesn’t hold right back

Is the question is whether to for an Arsenal defender, then the answer is always NO.

Bellerin is scheduled to rejoin full training this month but assume that when eligible, the spot is his immediately. After that, AMN is backup/cup games or pretty low in the pecking order in the middle.

    7. AndyCook
      6 years, 10 months ago

Emery has acknowledged he is inconsistent, I would put it at 50:50 right now. Regardless I wouldn’t be investing in the Arsenal defence, no large guarantee of clean sheets and a hard to predict back four

Wild card time, purely because I need KDB in my fanatsy life...

    Pope
    VVD Digne Otamendi
    KDB Sterling Salah James
    Pukki Barnes Abraham

Standard bench of Button Lund Kelly Dendonk

What do you think? Not sure about James but can oly afford up to 6.1m for that 4th spot.

I've gone a bit off piste with my WC (not too far though) and need to be coaxed back or told I'm safe. Pépé being my differential and thinking that Mané/Salah and Aguero/Sterling are interchangeable enough for the moment

    Pope (Button)
    TAA Digne Dunk Lundstram (Kelly)
    Pépé Mané KDB (Cantwell Hayden)
    Aguero Haller Barnes

Its fine to do something like this if you are absolutely sure you wont rip up your team to get Sterling or Salah in when they haul. And they will haul.

I would guess that all three midfileders - Mane, Sterling and Salah - will get more points than Aguero. Sucks that he's a forward. :).

The conundrum I find myself in is that I want Arsenal exposure. That means Auba realistically since I'm not convinced on Laca starting all the time. Which means Aguero out and then I can't afford the upgrade from Pépé to Sterling.

        1. Shineonme
          • 9 Years

Pepe would be a no no for me. Find some way to bring sterling in even of that means doing Aguero to barnes or Abraham.

        2. AndyCook
          6 years, 10 months ago

Why not change formation and play a 4-4-2 with Sterling instead of Aguero? Means one less playing bench player probably though

            I've done

            Aguero -> Greenwood
            Cantwell -> Sterling
            Hayden -> Douglas Luiz

and my mind is more at ease. 4-4-2 it is.

I agree his attacking potential makes it worth the risk. Plus he rarely gets benched for the easier games, so with a decent bench I don't think it's a huge issue.

Thats why I said 5 if not 6 as Martial has returned points, however he has tough 6 fixtures, Man U are poor and he is currently yellow flagged. Not sure I would count 2 x Liverpool as bench cover or King,

woukd have liked to found funds for trent over VVD but struggling. also unsure on caballos just that he was the next big thing then blanks v liverpool and spurs now forgotten and has great fixtures now.

    pope
    VVD digne otamendi
    salah sterling KDB caballos
    haller barnes pukki

    bench- cantwell, lundstrum kelly.

      Very template.

It's fine. Ceballos is a fine pick and you have Cantwell as backup. TAA is obviously better than VvD but that 0.5m is hard to find.

Anybody in the first 10k currently without using chips, mates?

Im currently around 30k, was around 20k before GW4 but oh well...
Overally glad because I havent used the WC and the team is still close to the WC ones.

Did My first hit for the season:
Martial Laporte to KDB Guilbert (-4)

Just hope Guilbert starts in the next good fix for Villa 🙂
    Current team:

    Pope
    Digne VVD Guilbert TAA
    Salah Sterling Mount KDB
    Abraham Haller

    Subs: Button, Greenwood, Dendonker, Rico

Not me. I used BB in the first week, and wildcarded this week.

Salah 12 (Sterling 20), Salah 3 (Pukki 17), Sterling 8 (Salah 15), Sterling 3 (Vardy 16). Consistent I suppose. Not really on the captain picks, but could have been worse as well. Better options in my team each week (in brackets who i would have had who was in my team with hindsight!). Fingers crossed. First 10 games are all about settling down

Son. But lets see how well both do this week

  27. Maddi Son
    • 8 Years

When I look at the next 8 gameweeks, there's only two or three games where I would potentially captain Salah. This is the main reason why I don't own him. However, two of those captainable gameweeks come in succession (GW7 & GW8) - I'm thinking of doing a two week switcheroonie of Sterling > Salah(c) and then back to Sterling again in GW9. Sorta like a hokey-cokey but better.

I think it could work out well because Man City's fixtures in GW7 & GW8 aren't the best. Not good enough to captain Sterling anyway.

    1. Brosstan

Agreed but I don't mind not owning Salah in tougher fixtures. If he scores, most people wont be captaining him either.

Thoughts on this WC, going for a differentiator through 3 'premium' striker options:

    Ryan
    Soyuncu - Masuaka - Montoya
    Sterling - Mane - KDB - James
    Vardy - Fimino - Abraham

    Bench: Button, Kelly, Dendoncker, Hanley

If you are going to destroy your defense atleast do it with Burnley at the back.

But honestly.. That's the worst team I've seen for a while. I wouldn't be surprised if the likes of pukki, Haller, Barnes match your "premiums" upfront over the next few weeks either for about 4 million less

Don’t see Liverpool fixtures merit double attack.

Take a look at how Bournemouth have 5 wide open defences in a row from 6. I’d get Wilson - bizarrely still falling after 4 returns from 4 and definite differential now - that allows you at least one decent defender.

Double Brighton defence is plain weird imo.

I'd go cheaper on abraham. Feels like he has been lucky whereas barnes should keep it up with his fixtures.

Gives you a little bit spare to fix one of those defenders
