Fantasy Premier League managers are going to have to look outside the usual suspects to find the best captain for Gameweek 9.

With both Manchester City and Liverpool facing relatively tough fixtures, this week’s debate largely centres around some less-discussed faces.

As ever, we’ve got the results of our latest poll and will also bring you analysis of the underlying numbers posted by players and opposition defenders alike.

As this article uses data from the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area, only those who have signed up for the 2019/20 season can access it in full.

Captain Poll

Tammy Abraham (£7.7m) comes into Gameweek 9 as the most popular captaincy option.

At the time of writing, the Chelsea forward had amassed the support of 32.2% as Newcastle prepare to visit Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

The Magpies have conceded at least three times in all but one of their away matches this season, losing 5-0 on their most recent Premier League road trip at Leicester.

Meanwhile, Abraham currently sits joint-top of the Golden Boot race having scored eight times this season.

Callum Wilson is a popular option in the Gameweek 9 captaincy debate

However, those that are put off by the fact that 25% of Abraham’s league goals have come in front of his own supporters in 2019/20, might be looking at Callum Wilson (£7.9m).

The Bournemouth forward is currently on course for a runners-up medal in the latest captain poll, with 16.3% of you backing the £7.9m man.

His Gameweek 9 opponents Norwich have conceded 21 goals in their first eight matches back in the top flight, the highest of any side.

Meanwhile, Wilson himself has registered attacking returns in all but one Premier League outing of 2019/20.

At the Vitality Stadium, he has three goals and two assists in four appearances, making more attacking returns against a still injury-trouble Norwich outfit very likely indeed.

Manchester City’s assets are not well-backed for their trip to Crystal Palace

As already mentioned, the captain poll has been somewhat turned on its head for Gameweek 9.

While mid-price options dominate the top end of the scale, it’s the premium assets who are bringing up the rear as a result of their tricky fixtures.

Manchester City must travel to Selhurst Park this weekend, where Crystal Palace have conceded just one goal in four league matches there this season.

For that reason, just 6.3% of you believe that Raheem Sterling (£12.1m) is the best captain for Gameweek 9.

He was one of England’s star performers against Bulgaria on Monday night but does only have one league goal in his last five Premier League outings.

That is probably enough reason for only a select few managers to consider him for the captaincy this week.

Aubameyang and his Arsenal colleagues are set to face a stubborn Sheffield United side on Monday night

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.1m) is facing a similar dilemma to Sterling, in that his Gameweek 9 fixture does look quite difficult.

Sheffield United have made both Chelsea and Liverpool work hard for results against them this season and have conceded one goal or fewer in three of their four at Bramall Lane in 2019/20.

Compared to Newcastle and Norwich’s defence, the Blades does seem more likely to frustrate a captain, even if Aubameyang has registered attacking returns in all but one match this season.

The case for Harry Kane (£10.9m) is perhaps the reverse of those at Manchester City or Arsenal.

The Tottenham forward has an incredibly favourable fixture, against a Watford side bottom of the league, winless and 20 goals conceded so far.

However, Kane and his colleagues have gone through a difficult period of form, losing 7-2 to Bayern Munich and then 3-0 at Brighton.

That said, the international break may help Mauricio Pochettino’s cause, while Kane himself has three goals and one assist in his last five Premier League matches.

He is currently backed by the same number of voters who are considering Sergio Aguero (£12.2m) for the captaincy.

Reportedly unhurt following a traffic collision this week, there probably remains some concerns about his strength of start.

Furthermore, the Argentinian’s accuracy has left a lot to be desired in recent matches, but he still has attacking returns in every round apart from Gameweek 8 in 2019/20.

Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) has the support of 4% ahead of a potentially tricky meeting with Burnley although he has goals in every match against sides who finished outside the top seven last season thus far.

Liverpool attackers Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané face a trip to Old Trafford this weekend

3.6% of you are waiting on an update from Guardiola on Kevin de Bruyne‘s (£10.0m) fitness ahead of that visit to Crystal Palace.

The midfielder remains yellow-flagged in FPL and his presence, or lack of it, could prove an important factor in Manchester City’s next result.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Sadio Mané (£11.7m) are shockingly low in this week’s poll, on 1.9% and 2.1% respectively.

The Egyptian is without a goal since Gameweek 5, while Mané has no attacking returns away from home since Gameweek 4.

Manchester United, although in poor offensive form, might prove a challenge to Liverpool defensively considering the recent numbers they have been posting, as discussed on the Scoutcast.

Furthermore, the last time Jurgen Klopp took his side to Old Trafford in the Premier League, it ended as a 0-0 draw.

Son Heung-min (£9.8m), Mason Mount (£6.8m), Teemu Pukki (£7.1m), Richarlison (£7.9m), Josh King (£6.3m) and Raúl Jiménez (£7.1m) are the only other options backed by more than 1%.

Beating United right now and keeping a clean sheet can't be seen as a turnaround in form

I don't own either yet, but if I did, I'd go Tammy... just.

It does come with a bit of risk tho, he's blanked in four of his five home games this season in all comps.

I don't think I trust Bournemouth, I remember the home games with Sheffield United on the opening day, and Fulham and Burnley last season. That being said, Chelsea are inconsistent too, I just think they're a better side so would probably go Abraham out of the two.

Think of it like Tottenham, when they played Bayern the other week. Starts off great, and gets off to a flyer, then gets a bit bogged down towards the middle, ends up completely falling apart and concedes 4 late goals, leaving it a humiliated shell of its former pomp.

Im doing so badly this season, big names in the team but really not seeing the returns. What would you do with this team? I got 2 FTs and 0.3 In the bank.

    Pope (Button)

TAA - Lundstram - Soyuncu - Otamendi (Rico)

Salah - Sterling - KDB - Guendouzi (Dendoncker)

    Aubameyang - Pukki - (Greenwood)

    1. LE CHARO
      • 6 Years
      6 years, 10 months ago

The clear issue there is the lack of Chelsea cover in attack. Starting Guendouzi each gw is not ideal either. Your priority should be to get Tammy or Mount (or even both). Maybe downgrade one of Salah - Sterling - Auba to get the necessary funds, or if you absolutely want to keep all 3, you could downgrade Otamendi. For example Ota + Pukki to Tomori + Abraham (don't know if it works with your funds).

      1. Luxury_malcom
        • 6 Years
        6 years, 10 months ago

Totally agree with you, lack of Chelsea has been a major concern. I think I can downgrade otamendi and then do pukki to tammy? Or would Mount be a better option do u think?

        1. LE CHARO
          • 6 Years
          6 years, 10 months ago

Tammy is the better option of the two imo, he's borderline essential now, given his value and ownership. He's performing like a premium-priced player but at less than £8m, if I didn't have him he'd be my number 1 priority. He'll be highly captained this week as well. Also, I think Hudson-Odoi could offer a nice differential to Mount while such an option doesn't exist for Tammy.

    Heaton,
    Digne, TAA, Soyuncu, Pieters
    Salah, Sterling, Mahrez, Mount
    Tammy, Pukki

Pope, Lundstram, Greenwood, Haydon - 1.6m ITB 1FT

    A) Mahrez back to KDB (as I had previously planned)
    or
    B) Mahrez & Greenwood to Maddison & Jimenez = -4 hit

    Thoughts please

  17. T.Henry14

    Problems with strikers here.

    Barnes - Pukki - Abraham

Have 1 FT and 1.0 ITB.

    A) Barnes ---> King/Jimenez only
    B) Barnes&Pukki ---> King&Haller for -4
    C) Barnes&Pukki ---> Wood&C.Wilson -4

    What do you think?

    1. Pinturicchio10
      6 years, 10 months ago

      Interesting spot.

B would be a no go for me as Pukki / Haller is so so and for a hit I wouldn't do it.

C looks good but the worry there would be a deficit on a hit for Pukki > Wood.

A doesn't involve Wilson, which would be a bit of a concern, but also doesn't involve a hit and Jimenez should go well for you.

Slight issues with all 3 options for me but I think A is the safest option.

      Good luck.

    Pereira / Creswell / Lundstram / Rico / Chambers
    Mane / Mahrez / Maddison / Mount / Saka
    Aguero / Auba / Tammy

    Wht would you rather do:

    A) Transfer in Wilson now for Che Adams (don't ask please). This scenario requires 4 additional transfers to get Salah...(Will get him for GW14 - Brighton)

    B) Save FT, play C. Adams, Rico or Lundstram and next week do a double transfer of Son, Saka -> CHO, Salah. (Means having Salah for Spurs at home - fixture I would back him to do well)

Could spent -8 and have both.

Unfortunately to have all 3 of CHO, Salah and Wilson I would have to take -16 hit

    Pope (button)
    Rico Robbo Aurier Zinch (Lund)
    KDB Son Salah Mount (Saka)

Rico more at risk now Adam Smith is back?

Those currently on double Liverpool defence, are you sticking or moving one on? Poor fixtures over the next 4 but Allison back makes it tricky.

It's a difficult one isn't it. I own Trent and Robertson and every week I'm tempted to downgrade the latter and move funds further upfield, something always stops me doing it tho! If De Bruyne is declared fit later on this could be the week.

Yeah it is. I’ve got 2 FT’s and always planned to move VVD on this week and shift more funds up top, but it’s a tricky decision.

I think Alisson makes a huge difference and the Liverpool double up will prove to be gold

Yep, it's a good point. I'd love to keep them both but really want De Bruyne so somethings gotta give, will keep thinking!

You still have your WC too... Are you getting Abraham or punting on C. Wilson AV?

feel same. Regarding comment below - Perreia gives easy way of bringing second liv defender in eventually

B probably as would rather have the money in attack and defence for future transfer purposes.

i thought same, but perreira is the highest scoring defender even though leicester have had a tough start. makes me think perreira coudl well be worth the extra

On WC ant can’t decide between Kun and Auba for my third striker, especially because their opponents this GW.

I think maybe going with Kane against Watford and next week change him with Auba...

    thoughts? cheers!

      kun
villa and sou at home after this gw, will be a popular cap pick to

Auba has a great run of long fixtures and is surely nailed. Just seems a less stressful medium-choice than Kun. Kane is a great option this week and could reap huge rewards as a punt, but I don't like him beyond this week as much as the other premiums.

Is anyone looking at Tielemans anymore, or is he no longer offering anything to attack?
